Laura Klock is a lady that loves a challenge, loves to
ride, and has a gift for inspiring others. She grew up in
the country in Wisconsin where riding and wrenching on
anything motorized was the pastime, so it seems only
natural that we find her where she is today. True to her
love of the sport, she is currently Vice President of Klock
Werks Kustom Cycles in Mitchell, South Dakota, and
holds AMA and SCTA National Land Speed Records
from the Bonneville Salt Flats. Laura has worked for sev-
eral years alongside long time friend and one of the pre-
miere builders in the industry, Brian Klock. In the last
few years, they have taken their business and friendship
to the next level, partnering officially as President and
Vice President of the company, and husband and wife.
Brian and Laura held their wedding ceremony on the
Bonneville Salt Flats in 2007! Their partnership has
resulted in completing 248 new part numbers (so far!).

Well, we certainly had more thanour usual quota of blizzards this spring! Finally, some decent riding weather
should put us all in a better mood. Hopeyou all had a wonderful time at our Spring
Open House—it’s always a great event tohelp kick off the season. We’ve got two events
coming up this month that should help further thecause: On Tuesday the 5th, we’ll have another of our
popular men’s nights, with lots of fun things to dofor just the men only; and on Tuesday the 19th,we’ll open the doors for ladies only, another of our
garage parties that are geared to showing the womenriders various tips and tricks about their rides, and thelifestyle in general. So, please plan on showing upfor your respective party night, hang with friends, meet new ones, and basically just use the opportunity
to have a good time! Words of fuzzy wisdom: If at first you don’t
succeed, then (and only then) read the instructions.

Screamin’ Eagle® Hydraulic Cam Tensioner Plate Upgrade Kit
This kit updates the cam chain tensioner of your early-model twin cam engine to the latestdesign, as featured on the Twin Cam 96 engine. The billet cam support plate has beendesigned to allow the installation of the late-model hydraulic cam chain tensionser to earlytwin cam-equipped models. These hydraulic cam chain tensioners will significantly outlastthe spring loaded tensioners, and are an ideal addition to an engine modified for improvedperformance. In addition, ’02-’06 models feature the late-model, single-row front cam chainand sprockets (’99 – ’01 models use the existing front silent chain). The kit includes theimproved late-model oil pump that increases flow by 8% and scavenging by 22% to enhanceother performance upgrades.
Fits ’99 – ’05 Dyna® models, ’99 – ’06 Touring models and ’00 – ’06 Softail® models.Installation requires separate purchase of Spacer Kit P/N 25285-08.
1999 – 2006 Twin Cam Engine Upgrade Available
Harley-Davidson has become more reliable than ever and, believe it
or not, most mechanics like it when our customers are enjoying thou-
sands of trouble free miles. The twin cam engine has been superior to the
evolution engine in many ways, but has left one doubt in our minds—
cam chain tensioners. These spring loaded tensioners have lasted well in
many bikes while failing too soon in others. In 2006, Harley introduced
a new design in the dyna model engines. This change proved itself wor-
thy and was installed into all big twin model engines in 2007. The
upgrade was a hydraulic cam chain tensioner, and it’s now available for
installation into earlier model twin cams (’99 – ’06). This upgrade allows
us to continue using Harley-Davidson cams, a redesigned cam support
plate as well as a late model oil pump, which improves engine oil flow.
We recommend inspecting cam chain tensioners at 25,000 miles, and feel
this kit is a great improvement when installing a stage 2 big bore kit.

Hi everyone! Sturgis Harley-
Davidson has made it through the winter
and spring snowfall. We have had 92.2
inches of snow in our parking lot. We
would like to thank the snow removal
crew for their hard and almost routine
work. Hat’s off!
The 2009 summer MotorClothes®
line is here (see page 4)! The men’s line
is bold with traditional graphics and a
relaxed and laid-back feel. The ladies
line has bright, clean colors with expres-
sive graphics. The ladies line also car-
ries an unexpected zebra print that
reminds us we should never take life too
seriously. There is a lot in this summer
line so stop in and check it out. May is
Motorcycle Awareness Month and this
is a good way to let motorists know that
motorcycles are going to be back on the
roads. There will be an awareness ride
with the Black Hills Abate Chapter on
May 18. The ride will leave Black Hills
Harley-Davidson at 10 a.m. The cost is
two cans of food or a cash donation.
Have a great ride and be safe.
Did you know in 1910 the famed
“Bar & Shield” logo was used for the
first time? It was trademarked and
patented one year later. What a great
American iconic logo.
Mother’s Day is May 10. We have
great gift ideas for her. We have silk
scarves, leather gloves as well as gift
cards so she can pick out just what she
wants. We will be closed on Memorial
Day, which is on May 25.
Our store hours in May at Sturgis
Harley-Davidson will be Monday
through Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and
Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. We hope to see
you soon. The coffee is on!

P.O.T. and H.O.G. Get your mind out of the ’60s; it standsfor Primary Officer Training for chapter officers. What were youthinking? Clay, Loren, Alex, Neal and I recently returned fromP.O.T. and came away believing our chapter is in great shape, and it is. For me, this was the best session I’ve attended andwould like to share the three Rs with you, the theme throughwhich this year’s session was present-ed.
The first “R” stands for Ride. How appropriate since H.O.G. isgrounded on riding and having fun. When you think about it the vastmajority of our chapter activitiesinvolve riding Harley-Davidsonmotorcycles. We ride for fun, the thrillof the power, the breeze in our faces, the scents in the air, the freedom of theopen road. Our challenge is to remem-ber that riding is why we all cometogether. Yes, we eat at restaurants, wethrow great holiday parties and organ-ize premier bike shows but even whenthings don’t turn out as planned, itdoesn’t matter because the ride is whywe do all the other stuff. So whenplans fail or things don’t meet ourexpectations, “screw it, let’s ride!”
Relevance is the second “R.”Interesting word, I’d say. We could gomany ways with that one but it struckme as the challenge to keep our chapter fresh, interesting andinclusive. Look around—our chapter reflects the stereotypicalH-D rider. Middle age mean anything to anyone? If we are toremain fresh, we need to find ways to appeal, not just to our-selves, but to all riders, young, seasoned, new and veteran rid-ers, and riders of both genders. More on this later as we strive tomaintain what has worked so well and develop ways to includeand encourage all riders. In short, finding ways to be relevant toall H.O.G.ers.
The final “R,” Renewal. Yes, our chapter needs membershiprenewals in order to support it financially, but that’s not thepoint. To me, it’s about the renewal of the riding spirit and thecamaraderie of those who share a common passion. Somewheredeep down riding moves us to throw a leg over, roll on the throt-
tle, make the turn onto the open road, willingly engage in con-versations with total strangers and understand the unrestrainedfreedom that riding allows us to experience. Every time weignite the v-twin, renewal is the result. Let’s not forget why weride. It clears the mind and refreshes the spirit!
Generally I’m a “go with the flow” kind of guy, but I haveto tell ya I’ve about had it withwinter—and bike show weekendwas the topper. Despite all thehard work by Chairman Lorenand his dedicated team of volun-teers who put together one of thebest shows yet, Mother Naturehad different plans. Despite theentry of bikes we’ve never seenbefore, the increasing quality ofdisplays and the presence of theChildren’s Miracle Network, attendance was hampered by afoot or more of snow that startedto fall Friday afternoon and con-tinued throughout Saturday. Wesaw an increase in attendance onSunday with the storm letting upa bit and we were able to recog-nize some dedicated entrants forall the time and effort they putinto preparing their bikes for dis-play. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who con-
tributed to the 21st annual bike show.So what’s happening around the chapter? May is Women
Rider’s month so let’s support and encourage the ladies in ourchapter to get out and ride! Be watching for additional informa-tion on Neck Yoke Road clean-up day coming to us on May 9.And as you may be aware, our Thursday Night Rides begin inMay, which is likely what we have all been looking forward to.Road Captain Nick and his team of Ride Leaders have puttogether some great rides and a few surprises, so make sure tocatch as many as you can.
Finally, the riding season is here! Let’s get out and ride andhave some fun. We’ll see you on the road, and remember …keep the shiny side up!
Being a H.O.G.® member means making themost of every ride—and every ride should bea safe ride. The H.O.G. Safe Rider SkillsProgram is the perfect way for you to do a lit-tle brushing up on your riding skills, whetheryou’re a seasoned veteran or a new rider.
The H.O.G. Safe Rider Skills Program offers
up to $50 reimbursement—in the form of aH.O.G. coupon—to H.O.G. members who suc-cessfully complete an accredited MotorcycleSafety Foundation (MSF) rider training course. It's H.O.G.’s way of saying safety mattersmost. Refer to your H.O.G. Benefits Guide formore details on the H.O.G. Safe Rider Skills
Program, or visit members.hog.com. Stop bythe parts counter at Black Hills Harley-Davidson and talk to one of the guys aboutdates, times and availability of courses.
