I have asked the question on a variety of occasions: Bible studies, board meetings, coffee conversations following worship. At first, there is quiet – an almost uncomfortable silence. Then comes a story, next an experience, following that an emotional incident and then conversation where it seems that everyone has something to offer. The question? Share one sign of God at work in your lives, in your work, your family, the world.

How would you respond? After a moment of silence – you may tell a story about sitting with a loved one as they approach life’s end. At First Lutheran, we have two of our beloved members nearing the end of life – perhaps by the time you receive this newsletter, one or both may have passed away. I have seen the families draw near one another to offer support, comfort, laughter, sorrow – and grace sufficient to cling to the Easter promise that death does not have the final word, rather the final word is found in the Good News promise borne by our resurrected Savior.

How would you respond? After a moment of silence – you may relate an experience of intense peace as you approach a difficult crossroad: the meeting with your co-workers, the appointment with your physician, the difficult conversation with your family member. Perhaps it was the simple trust that God would be present to give you the courage and the words needed.

How would you respond? After a moment of silence – you may share an incident at church when you felt the joy of community, or the power of God’s Spirit holding people together as we navigated difficult issues to discern where God is leading us, or together learning something new about scripture in order to recognize the signs of God’s work in our midst. Or perhaps it had to do with mission as you saw your larger church making an impact on people’s lives in areas devastated by disaster – knowing that you helped in that effort through your support given in your local congregation.

The signs of God at work in our world are limitless, if we would allow ourselves to be quieted and attentive. But it doesn’t stop at our recognition. We are called to be witnesses where we are able to share some sign that God is at work in and around us. Shortly after Jesus’ resurrection, his disciples asked him an important question: “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom?” (Acts 1:6) Jesus answered, “It is not for you to know… but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses.”

Witnessing is simply pointing to what God is doing – and it’s a vocation that belongs to all the baptized? How can we help but witness? Think of how easily we share pictures of our children, our grandkids, our earthly treasures? Witnessing isn’t about standing on the street corner singling out people who are too polite to walk away! It is a vocation woven into the fabric of our Christian life. It begins in our homes as we talk about where we have received God’s mercy and grace each day. It is revealed in the decisions we make when it seems that no one is watching. It also is a public act when we are compelled to speak out for justice, to work for peace, and sit with others who are distressed. Most importantly, witnessing is born out of prayer. It is being open to God’s work and the Spirit’s power. Now, more than ever, the world needs our witness.

The month of May moves us from Easter to Pentecost – from the resurrection of Christ to the birth of the church – from witnessing the sign of God at work in the world to becoming witnesses… allowing ourselves to BE that sign that God is at work. We do that as we receive new members (5 new households joining this month!); recognize the important vocation of motherhood in worship (one of the ways God has blessed us with enduring faithfulness); celebrating our confirmands (where we ask our young men and women if they intend to continue their work as witnesses as given in baptism); recognizing our high school seniors (and send them with our blessings into their new ventures and vocations). These are all signs that God is at work in this world.

Keep your eye out for signs that God is at work this coming month. And take a step out in faith and point that out to another. You’ll be glad you did – and yet another sign has been revealed.

Peace in Christ,

Here are the answers from last month’s “What if God text messaged the Ten Commandments”…

I hope these answers helped you gain some clarity- thank goodness we don’t have to decipher text speak every time we want to hear God’s word!

But God’s word is still confusing sometimes- even when read in plain English! Sometimes even reading one verse can be confusing. There is so much to think about when reading the Bible- when it was written, who it was written to, and even what was going on when it was written. Plus reading the Bible seems like a huge task- there 66 books in all! Who has time for that?

But it can be done and we will always hear God speaking to us when we read God’s word. Here are a couple of things that might make this challenge a little easier…

Make a plan. There are tons of reading guides online that lay out what book to read on which day, you can even pick how long you want to read or what part you want to focus on.

Keep a journal. Write down verses that are meaningful or confusing. Also, keep notes of how you feel when you read particular verses. You might feel joy or sadness- this is God speaking to you, helping you recognize things going on in your life that you need to focus on.

Find a buddy. They can encourage you to keep reading and might have some insight into confusing passages. Do some research. Researching the historical and cultural happenings of the book you are reading will help you put

things into context and make stories a little more clear.

Taking 10-15 minutes to be in God’s word each day will be an extremely rewarding experience for you! It will help you center your focus on what God is telling you and give you encouragement. It can be done at home, in the park, on vacation… whenever. They even make waterproof Bibles so you can read it in the POOL!

Blessings on your journey!

Chatting with Coleen Fowler

Director of Worship & Music Ministry LUTHER COLLEGE CATHEADRAL CHOIR performed a concert on April 18th which was outstanding! The choir consists of sophomores and sounded like music graduates. We were blessed to have been included in their 2010 tour. Thanks to Melinda for connecting with them and to Luther and Melinda Berkeland for organizing dinner for the performers. We fed 98 kids and made 3 runs to the store for milk and buns. Andrea Berkeland organized youth from the High School who helped serve these singers and helped with clean up. Everyone helping serve supper commented on all the “thank-yous” and “pleases” .

FIRST LUTHERAN DEDICATION CONCERT THANK YOU CONGREGATION FOR SUPPORTING THE PURCHASE OF THE GRAND PIANO AND TO THE FAMILY WHO GAVE THE HANDBELLS. Thank you to all the performers. The Senior choir, Handbells, Praise Choir, Cherub and Junior Choir plus brass. All participated along with these soloists: Noah Paulson began the concert on the grand piano which led into the handbells playing another version and culminating with the Senior choir singing a new arrangement of “Simple Gifts”. Performers were: Charlotte Roe, Lisa Lenth, Deb Tiedeman, Cheryl Luettinger accompanied by her mother Shirley Luettinger, Amy Rogness, John Albright, Carey Kopp, Melinda Berkeland, Joanne Flugstad, Jill Braaten, Tom Johnson, Steve Johnson, Greg Gilman and Coleen Fowler. Pastor Darren showed slides about the renovation and Ken Hanna who performed the restoration spoke. Our handbells played three numbers throughout the concert and gave a demonstration on techniques we have learned so far. There are many ways to play handbells and tone chimes. The concert ended with “Hallelujah Chorus” from “Messiah.” The reception committee transformed the Welcome Center into a banquet hall . Carol Siewert and Edie Sward chaired this part of the event, Becky Schultze chaired publicity and Julie Deschneau chaired our commemorative booklet. Many other people brought food and we had a huge clean-up crew. The were 325 people of all ages in attendance including three generations of three families. Thanks to all who helped and thanks to you as a congregation for the wonderful support you have given our music program over the last year and a half.

SPRING AND SUMMER SPECIAL MUSIC What kinds of music would you like to hear this summer and how can you contribute to being a part of our ongoing music program? Several events are already scheduled. Sign up with Coleen.

“THE TALE OF THE THREE TREES”: will be presented Sunday, May 9 by the Cherub and Junior Choirs during worship. The work is based on an American folk tale. It captures Jesus in a way that is fresh and timeless. Amy Rogness is the director.

YOUTH SERVICE: Sunday, May 23.

RED WING SILVERTONES will provide special music on Saturday, May 29.

REVOLUTION will be here in June . Details are being worked out.

See you next month,

Coleen

Some quotes for Mother’s Day…

“Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs... since the payment is pure love.” - Mildred B. Vermont

“The mother loves her child most divinely, not when she surrounds (him) with comfort and anticipates (his) wants, but when she resolutely holds (him) to the highest standards and is content with nothing less than (his) best.” - Hamilton Wright Mabie

“A mother's love is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, it never fails or falters, even though the heart is breaking” - Helen Rice

“An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest” - A Spanish Proverb

Join us for worship on Sunday, May 9th for a special Mother’s Day Worship service. The Children’s Choir, led by Amy Rogness, will provide the message for the day with their musical cantata, “The Tale of the Three Trees.” What better way to honor your mother than by gathering to worship in the name of the Author of Love!

From our Congregation President, Paul Tackmann I really love the spring season. Living in Minnesota, a person has got to love the change in seasons, but after a long winter, the spring season is always a great time. This spring has been just fabulous. I hope that all of you have had the opportunity to get out and enjoy the sights of spring as the world springs back into life after a long winter season.

Wasn’t it a wonderful Easter season that our church enjoyed and experienced this year? Our entire church staff did a fabulous job of preparing our Easter celebration once again this year. The resurrection of our Savior was indeed enhanced by the tremendous church services that were prepared throughout both the Lenten season and the services we had during Holy Week. A “BIG” thank you to each and every one of you for all you do.

As always, there are many more thanks that need to be given. I want to say “thank you” to the numerous volunteers that are continually helping to keep our church functioning. We, as a church family, are truly blessed by all of you. Without your unending devotion to the life of our church and the life of Christ, we would be in continual disarray. I truly hope and pray that all of you will volunteer a helping hand to the life and ministry of First Lutheran Church and the life of Jesus Christ. There are a tremendous number of ways to help with this ministry.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

See you in church,

Paul

Hard, dry sponge

Bucket of water

Take a look at the hard, dry sponge– pass it around for the kids to see and touch.

What can you use this dry sponge for? When a sponge is dry, it is pretty useless. What needs to happen for this sponge to become useful?

Submerge the sponge in water, and wring it out. What can you do with it now? What made the difference?

Turn to Ephesians 5:18 and read it aloud. What does this verse say? How are we like the sponge and the water? Before we know God we are “dry” and useless spiritually. When we give our lives to the Lord and let God fill us with the Holy Spirit, we become ready to do the tasks God has for us. How can we soak up the Holy Spirit and get ready for what God wants us to do?

Read aloud Psalm 51:11 as a pray to thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

For extra fun: Invite neighborhood kids over for a game of sponge tag!

Bible Studies Thursday Morning Bible Study with Pastor Darren Paulson...The Thursday Morning Bible Study meets at 8 a.m. in the Fireside Room. May’s study is on James. Often overlooked by Lutherans, the letter of James offers some wonderful insights on a life of faith. This study will explore how God can effect change and growth in someone who has been claimed in God’s mighty name.

Kristopher Hartwig Visit And Potluck: Thursday, June 17....Kristopher Hartwig, and his wife, Rebecca are missionaries in Tanzania, sponsored by First Lutheran Church. They will be back in the United States this summer and Kristopher will be visiting FLC in Lake City to share his ministry with us. The congregation is invited to a potluck supper and forum on Thursday, June 17. The potluck will begin in the church gathering area, followed by a presentation by Kristopher. More information will be provided in the June newsletter. Please mark your calendars and be sure to join us. This activity is sponsored by the Outreach Board.

Everyone Loves A Parade!: Sunday, June 27...Please join First Lutheran Church in this year’s Water Ski Day’s parade on June 27. The Outreach Board will be sponsoring a float. If you have ideas for a theme please share them with us. One suggestion was to use the 140th anniversary. People of all ages are welcome. Those that can’t or wouldn’t like to walk can ride on the float. We have been offered the use of an 18 ft. wagon. If anyone has something shorter please let us know if we can use it for the day. We are also looking for the use of old pews on the float. There is a sign-up sheet in the Welcome Center. Sign up today to be a part of this event. Questions can be directed to Becky Schultze, 345-5418; email [email protected].

Help for Daily Living-Did you know...that we have some men in our congregation eager to serve you? If you have a task or project that needs the attention of a friendly, enthusiastic volunteer – we have just the right folks for you. Tim Schlagenhaft and Randy Klipfel have been leading the Help For Daily Living group for several years and have enjoyed putting their faith in action as Jesus calls us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Previous projects have included light carpentry, yard work, cleaning, rides, moving, hauling – just to name a few. All it takes is a call to Tim (345-3078) or Randy (345-2136). Also, if you are handy and also willing to serve in this way, please pass your name and number to Tim.

If you are initiating or reconsidering your planned giving, please include the First Lutheran Mission Endowment Fund as a recipient of a legacy gift to an organization that is meaningful for you. The Endowment Fund will retain the principal amount and use the interest generated to fund special ministry needs into the future.

There may be some additional tax advantages for you should you name your church as the beneficiary of a gift of estate, investment, life insurance or other financial vehicle. For more information, contact the church office for an Endowment Fund brochure or consult with your tax advisor for advice on making a gift with a lasting benefit. Thank you!

Health & Wellness Ministry (HWM)

FLC Motorcycle Gang

FLC Motorcycle Gang 1st Ride! Meet at FLC Saturday, May 22 after worship for our 1st ride!

Some of the most scenic motorcycle rides are just outside our back doors! If you are interested in riding with others after worship (friends are always welcome!), please email [email protected] and let Pastor Darren know your availability! Indicate your interest for Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings. Starting this spring, we’ll meet at First Lutheran (Leathers are welcome!) and ride following worship – going wherever the wind blows us that day. Dates and times will be determined based upon availability. Keep the shiny side up!

Thanks to Dan Meyer, Dean Saby, Bob Polk, and Val Janka, the Health and Wellness Garden’s soil is prepared and ready to plant! Seed planting will begin the first week in May.

Do you know someone who would volunteer to make a wooden sign to identify our Health and Wellness garden plot? Contact Anne Marie Kjelland at 345-4512 for the joy of being a part of this bountiful teaching and giving process.

Holy Yoga - Session 2 will be offered at FLC Saturdays, April 17-May 22, 9-10am. Cost: $5/class. Classes led by Certified yoga instructors Christina Mroz and Lisa Danckwart. Sign up in advance with Liz Carlstrom at [email protected] or by calling 345-4430.

The Walking Lake Pepin program is entering its third year of promoting health and wellness in the Lake City community. This year's walking program is even more exciting .... the Lake City community is challenging the Wabasha community to a competition, the Walk To Win Challenge 2010! Walk to Win is about encouraging physical activity among children, youth, adults, families, and seniors in the community. Each participant wins by reducing risk factors for chronic disease and improving overall health. But only one community will win the trophy for logging the most minutes walked in ten weeks. The 2010 program will run June 7th through August 15th. Watch for opportunities to register (FREE) for the Walk To Win 2010 Challenge during May. Registration sites will be published in the Graphic; registration opportunities will also be available right here at FLC!

Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary!

This past month, we interviewed 8 exceptional candidates for the Stephen Ministry at First Lutheran Church. We are preparing a training schedule thru the spring and summer months, with the expectation that we’ll commission our new Stephen Ministers in August or September. Interestingly, all 8 applicants were women, so upon commissioning, our church will be able to respond to the needs of women in our community and congregation. In order for us to supply Stephen Ministry care to men, we will need to recruit, train and commission men for this need.

As we prepare for this ministry, please “think Stephen” as you encounter individuals who are going thru some personal difficulties and would benefit from a Christ-centered caregiver to simply listen, care and encourage them at this time. While we focus on people within our membership, this is also an outreach ministry to those in our community who may need to know the comforting love of God in the time of their distress.

Stephen Ministry is successful when the whole congregation is attentive to these needs and has a plan to respond appropriately. Remember, Stephen Ministry is not just the task of a few, select members of our congregation, but the greater ministry of this church!
