Upcoming Javelin release leads needs for mobile control and consoles The HP 3000, born in the early 1970s, is getting its first iPad app. The distance between the two solutions’ release is close to 40 years, but some 3000 managers and developers are thinking ahead to a time when staying attached to a keyboard, wired to a backplane or even a PC, will seem antique. And even though the 3000 is looked upon like a relic by some IT architects, users and software gurus want to bring Apple’s latest mobile marvel in step with their systems. Minisoft’s lead developer Neal Kazmi is working on an iPad port of the company’s Javelin, software that combines HP700/92 terminal connections, as well as Digital VT320, IBM 5250 and IBM 3270 connectivity in a single client. “For the HP 3000 it will support Secure Telnet and NS/VT network connectivity,” said Minisoft’s CEO Doug Greenup. “It will be an app that can be downloaded from the App Store, and probably sold for $9.95.” Greenup said the software will be available July 1. Other 3000 developers are eyeing iPad projects. Bruce Hobbs and Michael Watson, long-time engineers and programmers serving the COBOL and 3000 scheduler com- Scheduler offers 3000 features to Windows sites MB Foster develops new product from customer requirements In a first in the 3000 community, a new migration solution has been announced first on Twitter and Linked In. A notice from MB Foster rolled out MBF Scheduler, software to deliver an all-Windows release of advanced stream- ing and scheduling features 3000 customers have long deployed. The product grew up in MB Foster’s labs, nour- ished by the experience of engagements with several sites migrat- ing from the 3000. The migrating sites across several business sectors all needed the schedul- ing and jobstream power built into the HP 3000. They didn’t need, or want, Unix in the scheduling loop. The Scheduler is another step toward new business for MB Foster. Over the past several years the company has transformed itself into a services provid- er which employs software — some it’s created, some that it has acquired. This spring the company partnered with a Danish company to sell sign-on software in North America. But MBF Scheduler was built, tested and deployed by the company’s engineers, a team that’s been intact since 2001, building 3000 experi- ence and all based in North America. That’s the same lab that served HP when the vendor made a basic-level ODBC product available as part of the OS. MB Foster licensed its ODBCLink in an SE version to HP, then supported it for 3000 sites using the bundled SE. Although it came out of a seasoned lab, the newest software was introduced in nouveau style. David Greer, the new director of Marketing and Sales at MB Foster, tweeted the notice of the new product on Twitter, and posted it to LinkedIn, both with a link to a new Web page at the MBFA site. The software’s pedigree grew out of requirements of customers in sales, manufacturing and the Canadian government, according to Chief Technical Officer George Marcinek. The product proposes to “deliver the Development, support companies on 3 continents receive 3000 OS The usual suspects — leaders among the HP 3000 development and support communities — made up the list of eight MPE/iX source code licensees HP has announced. One developer of 3000 data- base utilities, suppliers of healthcare and ERP applications, and four independent resources for HP 3000 and MPE/iX sup- port filled the list of companies who will receive read-only access to most parts of the 3000’s operating system source. Adager and Ordat — the latter a European supplier of IMAGE wrapper technology and ERP systems, the former the market leader in IMAGE tools — were among the software development companies, along with healthcare application supplier Neil Harvey & Associates. Pivital Solutions, Allegro Consultants, Beechglen Development and Terix will employ the source code in support of their HP 3000 customers who use non- HP service. With the licenses, the 3000 community gets a document for its experts to con- sult while resolving system aborts and corruptions, starting next year when HP has turned over the marketplace to inde- pendent entities such as the companies granted licenses. “ I’ve been an IBM programmer for the past seven years andnow find myself in the HP 3000 world. I am totally impressedwith the tools you've created. My favorite so far is Suprtool. It is comparable to many of the IBM data manipulation toolsI’ve used as far as power and ease of use goes. My sincerestcompliments.” –Michael Vealey, University of Maryland

All Roads Lead to Speedware...

When it comes to HP e3000 migrations, it doesn’t matter where you’re coming from because we’ve probably already been there…and more than once.

We’ve migrated over 700 HP e3000 servers and over 200 different technologies, from COBOL to Protos and everything in between. When it comes to the HP e3000, we really have seen it all and done it all.

If you’re a small to mid-sized company looking for a way off the HPe3000, consider doing-it-yourself with our tools. And if you have a large IT environment and aren’t sure how to start planning for a migration, we can do a detailed analysis, provide you with a migration road map and manage the whole project.

K-12 application renovation modernizes database interface while providing agnostic code

Editor’s note: Minisoft’s Mollie Greenup offered us this vendor-reported customer case study of renovation and migration at K-12 software provider QSS. David Greer is charting a fresh course in familiar waters. The former Robelle pres-ident took a break from the industry in 2001, leaving Robelle after more than 20 years. At age 43 Greer recognized that “I’m still young enough to take on some-thing new. In another 10 years it’s a lot tougher. We’re looking at life issues, too.” He let the lift of his flexibility propel him onto a two-year cruise on his sailboat with his family, a trip he blogged exten-sively and looked to be the envy of many an overworked IT pro. Greer separated from the 3000 community less than a year before HP announced its exit plans, but he says he has never drifted far from his contacts and friends in spirit. Several times we’ve talked about ventures in growing companies as well as life prac-tices. Now he’s returned to the market as MB Foster’s Director of Marketing and Sales, extending a longtime relationship with that firm’s founder Birket Foster. In the eight years he was away Greer explored other ports of call in the indus-try. Once he got his land legs again, he returned to work as a director on boards of small start-ups, gathering experience that’s not easily found in the world of the 3000. He worked as VP of Sales and Marketing at eOptimize, an enterprise resource scheduling vendor whose Microsoft Exchange products were installed at very large financial services companies. He helped start up MailChannels, an anti-spam company. The work took him into boardrooms for investment and promotion while the strategic efforts led to study of cutting-edge IT issues. We wanted to hear what those experiences from his time abroad had taught him about the challenges and opportunities of the 3000 market. We spoke in early April just after Apple’s first iPad shipments, at a time when Greer had worked at his new MB Foster posts for about two months.

The market’s approach to a 3000 customer seems to have changed, with less focus on engaging through a product or meetings with technolo-gists. How has your strategy changed?

You’ve been away from this market since HP made its exit plans. What reasons have you seen why people need to leave the platform?

What experiences during your 3000 hiatus can con-tribute to your work now, on your return to the community?

What are the prospects for sending message to the older generation of IT managers about experimenting with new technologies or social networks, based on your start-up experiences?

There’s transition and homesteading to deal with now in the 3000 market. Does it seem to have gotten more complex when you make plans for

providing services?

How about the future? One of your early missions after you returned was ramping up a solution in the sched-uling field. With 3000 companies migrating, is there an opportunity to improve scheduling and bring 3000 features to other platforms?

Over the past quarter MB Foster took on the EasyIQ product line, software created in Europe, and you will be supporting and providing it to North American customers. Is this a prac-tice you’ll want to pursue again soon, or absorb the lessons from it first?

I’m back after a significant absence, but I still recognize the 3000 market. I even recognize

many of the company names I’m calling.

If I see any change, it’s the clients’ desire to

integrate the 3000 into a broader IT infrastructure.
