    Comrades and Fellow Warriors:

With thankfulness, I wish to first thank each andevery one of you for a nourishing year as state com-mander. Your thoughts and caring participation inOUR VFW programs and projects is sincerely appre-ciated. We still suffer the same problems of membermaintenance but that is a multi-year challenge. Postmembers must be kept in touch with or will find otheravenues for their time and talents. Districts need toform collaborative teams to help facilitate the helpful, caring help that some posts may need from time totime to get over hard times.

Please take the time to start making goals for yourposts/districts for the ensuing year. Without goals, the posts/districts are simply on auto-pilot that contin-ues to travel the same road. That road has led us toyears of decreasing membership and participation -just check district participation rates. We even haveposts that have troubles filling officer slots - wonderwhy? Please get behind our state/district/post lead-ership in promoting our VFW programs and projects -it is the only way for our communities and fellow vet-erans to evaluate our worth!!

Thanks and kudos to Lora Daily and our Ladies

Auxiliary for promoting "togetherness". We must sus-tain that initiative and be part of the solution and notpromote the problem. We can always do more withmore help and sustenance. Please take the time tothank your post auxiliary members - Men's Auxiliaryas well as Ladies Auxiliary.a thank you goes a longway. As Always,

Missouri Veteran Homes sets the exam-

ple that other State Veteran homes try toduplicate. Our Veteran Homes areenhancing services and offering top qualitycare in all areas because of the superiormanagement and dedicated staff thatassist our Veterans.Solariums have been built and theChapels have been expanded to improvethe physical and spiritual comfort of ourVeterans. During every visit at theVeteran Homes I have found staff mem-bers not only professionally caring for ourVeterans but the love and kindness that Isaw was only second to the respect thatthe staff and management expresses toevery Veteran on a daily basis. Not onenegative report came from a Veteran thatresides within the neighborhoods thatgrace the hallways and homes that havebeen made for our Veterans to call theirown. Our Veterans feel as though theyare in communities within the VeteranHomes. The quality of food and the staff that pre-pares it at each of our Veteran Homestakes great pride in presenting every mealin a delicious and relaxing manner. I have

asked hundreds of Veterans throughoutevery Missouri Veteran Home if they arehappy to be there, if they like the food, and are they comfortable. Each time theVeteran explained how wonderful the stafftreated them and all of them liked the foodand thanked God that they have thesebenefits.I would be amiss if I did not thank thecountless number of VFW volunteers thatwere always at the Veteran Homes. Nomatter what time I walked through thedoors, eventually I would come across avolunteer from the VFW.

    Chairman

Greetings, Comrades, Sisters andBrothers of the Auxiliaries. As I have saidbefore, it has truly been an honor servingas your Department POW/MIA Chairmanthis year. I have very much enjoyed allmy visits to all the Districts this past year. The National Prisoner of War-Missing InAction Recognition Day programs endedthe third week in September, 2011. Therewere many Post and District programsthat reflected the annual sense of aware-ness and dedication to rememberingthose still classified by our government asPOW- MIA. As prayers were read andtaps were played for the X-POW's whopassed away this past year, my mind wasalready thinking of the next eleven monthsand how the Posts and Districts within theDepartment of Missouri will continue on

with the demand for a full accounting ofthese heroes. To me, and many of mycomrades and sisters, the answer is obvi-ous. We never quit. To the others, whoonly think about this subject the thirdweek in September, I would like to remindyou that Prisoner of War-Missing in ActionRecognition goes on daily for those of uswho are committed for 100%Accountability. Let's all continue to keepthem in our prayers and thoughts as weenter the new year. I as the DepartmentPOW-MIA Chairman, I receive timely andconsistent news from the National League

of Families of American Prisoners andMissing in Southeast Asia. "As of January6, there are still 1,678 Americans listedby the Defense POW/ Missing PersonnelOffice as missing and unaccounted forfrom the Vietnam War. The number ofAmericans returned and identified sincethe end of the Vietnam War in 1975 isnow 905; another 63 US personnel, recovered post-incident and identifiedbefore the end of the war, bring the total10 968." That's 968 families that finallyhave closure for their loved ones. As Iclose, think about this question: If there

are still 1,678 still unaccounted for andone of those were your loved one, wouldyou be focused on just one month of theyear or would you have a perspectivegreater than most? There are still postsin our Great State that have not reportedany POW/MIA programs. I know you haveconducted a POW/MIA Ceremony so whynot report it to Department Headquarters.God Bless the troops still classified asPOW-MIA and God Bless their familiesstill waiting for answers.Christopher T BellDepartment POW/MIA Chairman

(Tom Mundell, continued from column #1)

Many organizations volunteer hundreds ofhours of their time to help with providingthat special care, personal time, and com-panionship for our Veterans. Our VFWPosts and our Auxiliaries across our Statehave a wonderful group of members thatshare precious time and camaraderie withour Veterans.

Missouri Veteran Hospitals in every areaare enhancing their care and services. Thequality of care within the Veteran Hospitalsis unmatched by any in hospitals in theWorld. Doctors, nurses, support staff andvolunteers work tirelessly 24 hours a day tomake sure that our Veterans receive thebest medical and psychological care that isavailable.Talking to hundreds of Veterans that await-ed their services brought many things to myattention. I found very few disgruntledVeterans. The most frequent complaintwas the amount of time that they had to

spend waiting to see a doctor or receive aservice. All of them said it was much betternow than before. They just wanted to beable to walk in and immediately see thedoctors. That does not happen anywhere.Regardless VA or Civilian hospital, you justhave to have patience and persevere.Complaints about not knowing how to goabout getting claims submitted were few asour Veterans Service Officers are makinggreat strides in reaching out within the hos-pitals to direct them and assist them in sub-mitting those claims. One things thatseems lacking within the hospitals are signsthat direct the Veterans to the offices of ourVeteran Service Officers. Each administra-tor assured me that these signs were inplanning stages and they would be imple-mented immediately when made avail-able.Throughout the hospital, nearly every-one had compliments and good storiesabout their treatment at our VA hospitals. The Administration at the VA Hospitals arefantastic and I have never met more caringand concerned individuals that have thewellness of our Veterans foremost in theirgoals and future plans. Not only are they

directing their attention toward the VeteranPatient, but they are looking directly at ourVeterans that are qualified for jobs withinthe VA and giving Veterans Top Priority forjobs as they become available.Thousands of Veterans quality of life hasbeen enhanced by our Veteran ServiceOfficers professional guidance and assis-tance to acquire their medical benefits, compensations, and pensions. Our great-est assets for the Veterans are our VeteranService Officers. They need our full sup-port.Tom Mundell State Surgeon, Department of

    Bob WonnellPast Dept. Commander

This will be my last Missourian article as your

Past State Commander. Let me say what anhonor it has been to serve you these past fewyears. They have flown by. I can imagineCommander Parks is now saying where didmy year go? The time flies by and your lineofficers are kept on the go all year long. They too will tell you what an honor it hasbeen serving as one of your Department LineOfficers. Actually I am hoping to continue myservice to you as a Line Officer as yourMissouri Council of Administration member.Even if not elected I can promise you I willserve the Department in any way I can and Iwill always be at your service. Remember

why we exist, comrades, it is to serve worthyveterans and their families. If we keep this inmind and really put all of those trivial person-ality disputes and petty jealousies aside , ourgoal is a clear yet simple matter. Every per-son you see or meet may be a veteran eligi-ble for VA benefits and you can be the personwho helps them get them. Learn the system.Be knowledgeable in Service OfficerProcedures. If youre not, ask. Any StateOfficer is more than willing to help you learn.I have been asked to serve as PublicityChairman again next year and have accept-ed. Each and every Post and District needsto learn to tell their community of the goodthings you do in your communities. HelpingVeterans and telling the community the goodthings about your VFW can make your Postan All State or All American Post every year.It takes hard work and dedication but you areup to the challenge. Many changes are forth-coming in our great organization. Lets allembrace them and move onward andupward. The Veterans of Foreign Wars is thevery best Veterans organization on the faceof Gods green earth. Lets each do our partto keep it that way. Bob Wonnell
