COVER:Eileen Neer moved toOklahoma from New York 22 years ago when her late husband, Dr. Charles Neer II, retired from a decorated career as an orthopaedic surgeon at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and returned to his boyhood farm. Eileen has since opened a shop on the farm, which is located near Vinita in rural Craig County. She stays busyassisting customers who come to visit and browse a wide selection of gifts and home decor. She also fills online orders for her popularsignature candle line, Scentables, each jar of which she hand-pours personally.Read more about Eileen’s story inside on page 5.

Plan ahead when plantingSpring is a popular season for tackling outdoor projects, but don’t sacrifice safety

for beautification when sprucing up your yard. It is important to be aware of electrical hazards while planting. Always seek assistance from professionals when

choosing the right species and location for trees and bushes. Trees that grow too close to electric lines can create hazards and cause power outages. Children can become victims of electric shock when they climb trees that have grown too close to the power lines. Trees growing into power lines can also create electrical hazards for people who might be trimming branches, hanging lights or otherwise working around them. “Trees provide many aesthetic, environmental and economic benefits,” said North-east Oklahoma Electric Cooperative (NEOEC) Safety Director Bret Boyd. “But everyone needs to be aware of the dangers and risks created when trees grow into power lines and the importance of calling the utility or utility locator service before beginning any landscaping project.” Take the time to research tree selections by consulting your local arborist, tree nursery or utility. These experts can provide assistance in designing a beautiful yard with plantings appropriate for each area of the landscape. Trees can provide economical cooling in the summer, as well as a wind-break for harsh winter winds. In addition, trees help combat the effects of pollution by absorbing carbon di-

oxide (CO2). When trees grow, they take energy from the sun and combine it with CO2 from the air to pho-tosynthesize. This makes trees a natural “carbon sink” or, a living source of carbon reduction. Some trees are better suited for this task than others and, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, tree species that grow quickly and live long are ideal carbon sinks. Choosing the right tree is especially crucial when it comes to power lines. Trees can conduct electricity and create a safety hazard if grown close to electric lines. Power outages or momentary interruptions can occur when branches come into contact with overhead lines. Electrical arcing and sparking from a wire to a nearby branch can also cause fires. “Keep in mind expected height when you purchase trees to plant this year,” Boyd said. “Just because a

tree is far from the power line right now, doesn’t mean it always will be.” If you have trees that appear to be growing into power lines, contact the cooperative. Never try to prune them yourself. NEOEC has or can recommend skilled professionals trained to safely prune and trim trees for electric line clearance. To avoid future electrical hazards, safe planting tips to remember include: •Considermatureheightoftrees.Neverplantatreenearapowerlinethatcouldgrowwithin 25 feet of it. A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended for trees planted near power lines. •Donotplantnearundergroundutilityservices.Treerootscaninterferewithunder-ground pipes, cables and wires. Future repairs to these facilities could damage nearby plants and trees and require removal. •Keepareasaroundelectricmeters, transformersorotherelectricalequipmentfreeofany vegetation that could limit utility service access. •Beforedigging,call811andhavealocatorservicemarkthelocationofundergroundutilities so that accidental contact can be avoided. “There are many beautiful varieties of trees and shrubs that provide color, screening, shade and enhance the quality of life in our communities and environment,” said Boyd. “Consider the types of trees that co-exist well with power lines and the environment to avoid the need for trimming for line clearance.”

A garden is a place to enjoy nature in all of its splendor. Beyond that, it is a place for contemplation. For introspection.

One could, with little effort, draw parallels between a garden and the human journey. Seeds are sewn and plants are nurtured. They bring forth blooms and later fruit. Time is set aside for maintenance—transplanting and pruning—as growth requires. Life is challenged, as sure as the seasons change.

-o0o- The pursuits of life tug at our roots and carry us away into a world of adventure. The journey can be long and winding and full of unexpected twists and turns. Eileen has been a willing participant on this journey. As a young girl growing up on Long Island, New York, she would spend her days swimming at Jones Beach with sister Kathy, sailing with her family, or combing the flats of the Great South Bay for clams. She recalls vividly how they would shuck the clams on the spot, sprinkle them with a little chili sauce and enjoy them right out of the bay. Young Eileen could have never envisioned during those carefree days that she would one day end up a thousand miles away in rural Oklahoma.

-o0o- The garden sits in an area once covered with pastureland. Grass pathways trace stone-lined beds filled with thriving flowers, shrubs and trees. Baths and handcrafted houses invite birds to this sanctuary. Rabbits, too, are frequent visitors. This place has been a refuge for Eileen—especially so since Charlie’s passing. She lost her beloved husband and best friend in February 2011. It was painful to watch his decline from the vibrant, dynamic man so highly revered throughout the international medical community. Dr. Charles Sumner Neer II was a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon who helped thousands of patients during the 50 years he spent as an esteemed member of the

Gardens of life

faculty at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. Eileen and Charlie met there while working together. Dr. Neer is considered the father of modern shoulder surgery. His was a brilliant career. His work was innovative, his achievements remarkable. He developed techniques and engineered prostheses that advanced the science of shoulder surgery like no one before him and no one since. It should come as no surprise that a Neer prosthesis is on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute. “He was the best in the world at what he did,” Eileen said.

-o0o- Eileen finds herself living on the boyhood farm of her late husband, a sprawling 500-acre tract of meadow. She returned to Vinita with Charlie when he retired from clinical practice in June 1990. They have a son, Charles Henry Neer, now a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma. Fire claimed the original farmhouse back in the 1920s. The big red barn out back is the lone reminder of the original homestead. Both the cottage and garden are relatively new additions to the landscape. Dr. Charles Sumner Neer arrived in Indian Territory before statehood by way of Beaucoup, Illinois. He established a medical practice with longtime friend and colleague Dr. Louis Bagby and was the only surgeon in the eastern portion of Oklahoma Indian Territory. Charles Sr. passed away at the age of 39, leaving wife Pearl with two children to raise. Eileen often ponders the tough decisions made by a mother-in-law she never knew. How difficult it must have been for Pearl Brook Neer to lose a husband at such a young age and raise a family on her own. Eileen can scarcely imagine how agonizing it must have been for Pearl to send her only son to an Episcopal boarding school in Faribault, Minnesota, for his own good. She must have had an inkling—mother’s intuition, no doubt—that great things lay in store for this bright young man. Pearl knew her son would not be challenged in a way that he needed by the limited opportunities of rural life. How she must have questioned this decision when her beloved son thought it cruel to be sent to such a cold place with no friends or family. But what yielded from this decision was unquestionable. Charlie emerged from Shattuck-St. Mary’s a disciplined young man, so well trained that he could continue his education at the Ivy League College of his choosing. Dartmouth was his pick and again he excelled. Next was the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. His residency training years were interrupted by military service. He would serve in three theaters as a Captain in the U.S. Army. This was just the beginning for Charlie and his gifts. He lived a life without limitation, just as his mother envisioned. “To come from such a small town and humble upbringing and accomplish what he did just amazes me,” Eileen said, crediting Pearl with making the tough decisions

that helped set the course for Charlie’s future. Pearl was from Springfield, Missouri, and had herself attendedcollegeinthelate1800sinordertopursueateaching career. “I think she was way ahead of her time,” Eileen said. “The world was changing dramatically at that time. She was an avid reader and I think that she had a lot of foresight. She thought Charlie needed to have more opportunity. Her decision to send him away to Minnesota opened doors for him. I don’t believe he would have had those opportunites otherwise.” Added Eileen: “I never met her, but I’ve lived in her home. I’ve used her China. I feel like I know her.”

-o0o- Oklahoma is home now for Eileen Neer.

The Vinita community is a world away from the hustle and bustle of New York, but it is a place she has grown to love. “I’ve been out here full time for 22 years,” she says in a decidedly New York accent that doesn’t go unnoticed by a visitor. “I’ve had my accent longer than I’ve been in Oklahoma,” she replies with a polite smile. “It’s so different here,” she admits. “There were more people who worked in the medical center than what live in Craig County. The quiet out here is quite different. You can almost hear your heart beat when the wind isn’t blowing.” Eileen still travels. She does her best to remain in touch with friends across the globe that she and Charlie made during their journey together. It also helps fill other voids that remain from her

former life. “I do miss the ocean. I grew up around the water. To be in a landlocked state is a big change,” she said.

-o0o- It is said that there is joy in the morning, and Eileen finds it by staying busy in the garden or the shop. She enjoys visiting with customers and making candles. Opening the shop doors each morning to a view of the pond and three retired thoroughbred races horses grazing in the pasture is a source of joy for her. She hopes to one day use the old barn to host events

and gatherings. “It’s a neat old barn,” she said. “It’s always had a good roof on it, so it’s well preserved.”Eileen’s at Neer Farm opened in April of 2011. The farm cottage became a quaint shop where you’ll find all manner of gifts and home decor. A lovely garden further transformed the property into an area meant to be shared. “There are lots of birds and other wildlife that visit the garden. It’s quite nice. It has been a source of peace,” she said. “You can get lost in your thoughts out there. It’s very good therapy.” Eileen is an Oklahoma Master Gardener. She offers tours to accommodate programs for garden clubs who visit the farm. “Everyone has a gardening style. Mine tends to be a little less formal.” Eileen is proud of the fact that no chemicals are used on the farm, which has been designated by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Eileen’s inventory emphasizes items that are either American made, made in Oklahoma, locally produced or handcrafted. She can create gift baskets for holidays and special occasions. Visitors browse an assortment of made-in-Oklahoma foods like salsas and jellies. They’ll also enjoy a selection of home decor and accents with a country charm like distressed furniture, windchimes and various garden items. The centerpiece of the business may well be Eileen’s own unique line of Scentables soy-based candles. Each jar is handpoured by Eileen herself. Candles are available in two jar sizes and feature no dyes or additives. There is a selection of scents from which to choose and the fragrance throw is exceptional. “The business has always been something I’ve wanted to do,” she said. “As a mother you don’t always have time to do everything you want to do, but this was a dream of mine for many years and then the opportunity came along to purchase the candle company and learn how to make candles.” Eileen’s candles are quite popular and have developed quite a loyal following. Along with being a member of the Made in Oklahoma Coalition, she gains additional visibility for her products by attending artisan shows and maintaining

retail space at markets that offer such products in Tulsa and Claremore. She can even offer custom labels for special events such as weddings. “The business continues to evolve,” said Eileen. “There doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to do everything I’d like to do.” Eileen’s at Neer Farm is open 10

They can come out and bring the family. They don’t have to buy anything. We can just have a nice visit.” She added: “Planning the gift shop was something that helped me pass the time and stay close to my husband while he was sick. I tried to keep myself busy while preparing for the future. We had a 19-year-old and I wanted to have a plan.” It helped having her late husband’s blessing. “Charlie was always supportive. He thought this would be a nice idea. It made him happy I was staying in Oklahoma.”

May 2012 11

I t all started in 2004 when Jim and Diana Sellers decided to create a restaurant out of a century-old farmhouse just north of Langley on Highway 82. The

Sellers hailed from Oklahoma City and were accustomed to lots of dining op-tions and thus saw an opportunity to fill a void at Grand Lake. Jim brought to the venture a wealth of experience from a career spent in the food business and Diana’s love for gardening was unmatched. The pair were a perfect fit for the old farmhouse and its big, overgrown garden.

Once their catering company in Oklahoma City was sold, the idea of a restau-rant at Grand Lake quickly took shape for the Sellers. The Artichoke Restaurant opened its doors for business in July 2004 with construction of a commercial kitchen and dining areas completing the farmhouse conversion. Nearly eight years later, The Artichoke Restaurant is one of the most popular spots on the lake. The establishment features cozy yet elegant dining that makes you feel at home, along with a quaint bar that has eleven very popular seats. The atmosphere at The Artichoke is as enjoyable as the food is delicious. The garden behind the restaurant pro-vides fresh herbs most of the year, as well as vegetables used in the summer months. Restaurant patrons also enjoy a leisurely stroll through the garden before or after dinner.Once seated, you are treated to artichoke spinach dip with toasties while you peruse the menu. A whole, steamed ar-tichoke, stuffed mushrooms or mini artichoke raviolis are available for appetizers. All the entrees come with a cup of homemade soup of the day or the house salad of fresh greens, tomatoes, cucumbers sprinkled with toasted almonds, and your favorite dressing. The menu includes a variety of entrées, including two chicken selections, three shrimp preparations, crab cakes, tila-pia, catfish and the best salmon in the area. Or, try a sumptuous steak—like a big juicy ribeye, a filet, KC strip or top sirloin—all cooked to order. A side is included with your meal, so why not enjoy a whole fried potato with your steak or equally popular choices like grilled vegetables, brown rice, sautéed mushrooms or asparagus? The service is impeccable thanks to an experienced wait staff that has been with the Sellers since opening day. Of course, Jim and Diana are right in the middle of it, making cocktails, serving bottles of wine and taking care of their

customers as if they were having dinner in their home. Come and experience an evening of fine dining, deli-cious food, great service and a welcoming atmo-sphere at The Artichoke. The hours are the same since the day it opened: Tuesday through Saturday at 5 p.m., fifty two weeks a year. Reservations are highly recommended. Call 918-782-9855 and experi-ence The Artichoke for yourself.

Spring has been warmer than usual, and summer heat may not be far away. Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative offers these tips to help members conserve

energy and save on electricity bills when temperatures begin to rise. •Setthethermostatat78degreesorslightlyhigher.Themonthly savings could be as much as five percent. Raise the thermostat higher when away from home for extended periods. •Changetheairconditionerfilterregularly. A dirty filter cuts down on air flow and reduces efficiency. Air conditioners are the biggest source of electric use during the summer. In many homes, air conditioning accounts for more than half the electric bill. •Closedrapesorblindsduringthedayto reduce heat from direct sunlight. •Useroomorceilingfansto circulate air. •Usefluorescentlightsinsteadofincandescent lamps when possible. Fluorescent lights last about 10 times longer while producing more light and less heat for the same amount of energy. •Whenbuyinganewairconditioningunitorheatpump, select one with a higher Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER). The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit. •Usesmallerappliancessuchascrock-pots,toasterovens and electric skillets to cook whenever possible to help keep kitchen temperatures lower and save energy.

•Insteadofheatingtheovenonhotdays, usethemicrowave. If you are using the oven, avoid opening the door, which can let out 20 percent of the heat. When using the stovetop, choose pans that match the size of the burners. This cuts down on heat lost to the air. • Use the dishwasher only when you have a full load.

Smaller loads use the same amount of water and power.•Useheat-producingappliancessuchasyour dryer, dishwasher and range during the cooler nighttime hours.•Washfulllaundryloadsratherthanwashing multiple small loads. Clean the lint filter after every dryer load. Clothes will dry faster and it will save energy.•Minimizedoortraffic.Thehotaircausesyour air conditioner to run more, which places an additional load on your unit and increases your energy bill.•Addinsulationintheattic.Betterattic

insulation can save as much as 30 percent on cooling and heating costs. Insulation is measured in R-value. The higher theR-value,thebettertheinsulation.InsulationofR-38(12inches) is recommended. •Ensurethatexteriorwindowsanddoorsclosesnugly. This will keep the warm out and cool air in. Apply weather stripping and caulking where needed. Proper insulation can make a big difference in keeping a house cooler in the summer.
