Writing annual reports is a great time for reflection. It makes us think back to all the activities that the club has been involved with over the past year. This report does not cover a full 12 months as Marcia and I are heading away on the 10
th April for 3
months.
So looking back over the last 10 months, the club activities have been many and varied. Every class of motoring has been catered for, Veteran, Vintage, PV, PW and P60, Motorcycles, Commercials and Hill Climb. I commend all the members that have helped to organise these events, assisted with marshalling and helped out with the catering needs. Our Double Fifty this year was a little different in that all the entry fees collected were donated to the VCC President‟s Earthquake Appeal Fund, enabling all the entrants to play a part in assisting with the fund.
The Branch this year has again had a very busy programme, with good turnout to all events. The New Years Day run is proving to be very popular with a large number attending. The Blue Smoke and Pedals Event was a victim of the shocking summer weather and had to be cancelled, but will be on again next year.
The highlight of the year for many club members was the 2012 Wanganui International Rally. This was an excellent event and I am sure that all the Waikato members that attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The camping ground fellowship was great fun and the Happy Hours really enjoyable. Hopefully the members who did not attend, by reading the reports and looking at the photos, have realised what they missed out on and will try to attend the next rally in 2016.
Unfortunately during the year we had some members pass away, our thoughts and sympathy are with those families as we reflect on the past year. I would like to especially mention our late member Eric Rogers, who was our Club Captain at the time of his death. Eric, together with Alison, have been great Club Members, and he has been greatly missed at our Committee Meetings.
Our branch membership has been steadily growing and we are currently the third largest branch, with Canterbury and Auckland ahead of us. With this size comes the responsibility to partake fully in the Executive Meetings and national activities of the Vintage Car Club of NZ. With the effort we put into these, I am sure that the Waikato branch is held in high regard throughout the country.
The main reason we are a successful branch is the hard work and dedication that is put in by the Branch committee. My thanks go to all the committee members for their efforts over the past year. I must make special mention of the Branch Secretary, Bob Hayton. Bob is an invaluable asset to the Branch and is always

going above and beyond the duties of a Secretary. The branch members owe a huge debt of gratitude to Bob‟s efforts again this year.
To all our new members this year, a warm welcome, come along to events and get involved, trust me you will enjoy yourselves.
On the financial side, the club is still in a strong financial position. The surplus this year will probably be lower due to the $3,000.00 donated to the Earthquake Appeal Fund. This year we were fortunate to secure a $500.00 grant from the Waipa District Council for administrative purposes.
At the AGM there will be opportunity for all members to discuss the costing involved with the proposed Club Rooms extension, so please make the effort to attend and have your say.
Thanks again to all the Committee members who have worked so hard to keep the branch running at the high level of performance it has. We have achieved a lot but we must look ahead and strive to achieve more.
This will be the end of my third year as your President and I am happy to stand again for a further year, if the members so desire.
My apologies for not being able to attend the Branch AGM but on the 13th
June we will be arriving in Ottawa, Canada. However I will be thinking of you all. See you all in July. Graham Pate.
For the lucky ones who don‟t work during the week, Bob has arranged a tour to the Toyota factory in Thames on 04 May. Give him a call on 856 7238 if you would like to join in, as numbers are needed so that Toyota can allocate suitable staff.
Clubnight in May is sure to catch the interest of everyone. Police officer Nigel Fookes is coming along to share his experiences and photo record of affairs “Beyond the Cordon” in the days following the earthquake in Christchurch. This will be followed by the Prizegiving dinner on 12 May.
Newer members will have had an invitation to the upcoming training run on 20 May, this is an ideal chance to come to grips with competitive rallying. Our older members are also encouraged to come along to lend support to the newbies and also to brush up on your own skills.
The Double Fifty over Queen‟s Birthday weekend is also nearly upon us, you can look forward to great motoring and a good social event. This is our big one for the year and your support is always appreciated.
For a run with a difference, come along to the Night Rally on 23 June - it is always a lottery as to what the weather will be doing but that adds to the excitement.

Unpaid subscriptions are now overdue and you need to be financial to vote at our AGM. The next Venture newsletter will be your last and no more copies of Beaded Wheels will arrive in your letterbox if you remain as one of the few still unfinancial, so perhaps it would pay to get it done.
Committee likes to acknowledge at prize-giving all newly restored vehicles from the past year, so if you know of something completed in the past twelve months, even if it has not yet appeared at a club event, we would appreciate the tip.
Our Branch AGM will be held this year at clubnight on Wednesday 13th
June. There is only one „notice of motion‟ received, which is a Committee proposal for reworked Branch Rules or Constitution. This is considered necessary in order to bring our document up to date and into line with national requirements, with which it has conflicted in some areas for some time. The current Branch constitution is based on the original founding document from the 1950‟s and the last small change to this was incorporated in 1997, so that‟s quite a good run as these things go. Copies of the old rules and the new proposed set will be mailed to you separately in early May, together with the formal notice. You can still ask for any non-notifiable items to be placed on the agenda by advising myself in good time.
A couple of events which require you to pre-plan are almost upon us. The weekday visit to the Toyota factory at Thames on Friday 4
th May (see page 11) is a great
opportunity to see how Signature Class cars are prepared, but the company needs information on numbers to make suitable arrangements. Let me know by email [email protected] or phone (07) 856 7238 if you plan to come along and the number of people in your vehicle.
The other event to book for is our annual prize-giving social evening on Saturday 12th
May. This time the person to advise is Jeremy Brook, who will also need your $15 each to cover the club subsidised meal. Booking forms were enclosed with the previous Venture and we need numbers for catering purposes. Make your booking with Jeremy by 1

RD4, Hamilton 3284. Maybe there is no such thing as a free lunch, but this is one occasion when our long service badge recipients and their partners get something back for their loyalty.

Another Mooloo Meander has crept up on us again !!!!
Our trusty committee has been hard at work, plotting and perfecting this years rally, ironing out the wrinkles and organising the pit stops. Friday night was the start of it all and saw a good number turn up at the clubrooms, a time to catch up with fellow riders, sharing stories and a cold one or two, along with a pea, pie & spud dinner……
A perfect morning greeted us on Saturday, so it was a quick dash to the gas station to fill up the bike. By now everyone was trickling into the clubrooms, some had come from afar the night before and camped out, others had left early to get there on time. We were all eager to get our “rally pack”, have a quick read to sus out were we would be going, a warm cuppa, chat and then tog up, also remembering our start times. All of a sudden it‟s clock ticking, then “ off we go”.
Getting through the Cambridge Saturday morning traffic was a breeze, then over the high level bridge and out onto the country roads, quiet, winding up hills, down dales, opening up the throttle on the flats, checking the instructions hoping we were heading in the right direction. Finally, way out in the middle of nowhere, approx 50 miles after starting, we came upon a marshal clocking our finishing times and helpful children pointing out where to come in and park. We had finally arrived at our destination……. Bradfield Farms Agriculture Depot on Ngahape Road just 10 km‟s from Otorohanga. Well chosen with heaps of parking for all the bikes, a welcome morning tea supplied by friendly local school parents as a fundraiser, so spoilt for choice with the food, the setting was bang on, plenty of comfy chairs for resting up, under cover, shading the now very warm midday sun, everybody catching up with fellow riders and great a set of hosts…..
Only incident on the morning run was a puncture in the rear moccasin of the Indian, duly transported to the lunch venue by Tail End Charlie………….attempts to repair the rear moccasin proved unsuccessful so the Indian remained with Tail End Charlie for the completion of the rally………sitting on the deck, seeing the array of loved bikes, Velo‟s, BSA‟s, Triumph‟s, Norton‟s to name a few, a beautifully restored Jawa was a sight to behold, about 60 bikes in total I think. A 3 wheeled Morgan was also in the line up, being navigated by Les Diez; it was nice to see him partaking in a rally again……….
Five pounds heavier, compliments of a scrumptious lunch, served very soon after the generous morning tea, it was time to climb back in the saddle and to head off for the afternoon run. Cruising through more beautiful back country roads, a right turn

bought us back onto State Highway 3, a short distance to Te Kawa crossroads and a petrol stop for those that needed it.
From there up through Kihikihi, hang a right, back across the Cambridge/Te Awamutu road, couple of turns, then onto the gravel surface of Wallace Road, or for all the “softies”, continuing on down the tar seal, all converging out by the airport, down past a couple golf courses, can‟t stop for a game, got to keep going………under the Tamahere fly over and heading towards Tauwhere, a quick spurt through Bruntwood Road, Zig Zag Road etc., and we found ourselves back on Taylor Street, down to the end, sharp right, down MacLean Street to the clubrooms, where a yummy afternoon tea awaited us. By now we had clocked up close to 100 miles, but with the clear instructions, quiet roads, beautiful scenery and fantastic weather it did not seem that far at all………….
A couple of hours of down time before heading back to the clubrooms at 6.00pm for dinner and prize giving……..the evening went without a hitch, everybody enjoying the wonderful food and company.

The Norton Big 4, or Model 1 as it is more correctly known, had one of the longest production runs of any motor vehicle. Introduced by the fledgling company started by James Lansdowne Norton in Birmingham at the end of the 19
th
Century, the first fully Norton designed and built model came to the market in 1908, and stayed there for 46 years, until being discontinued in 1954. What a record for a machine that was first preceded by small foreign Clement clip-on motors mounted in bicycle frames only five years previously and the famous win in the multi-cylinder class of the inaugural Isle of Man TT Races with a 690cc Peugeot engined bike the previous year.
Why Big 4? Is it the bigger 4-stroke model, 4-speed gearbox, 4-person carrying capacity with sidecar or what? Actually it was the 4hp power rating on the old British tax horsepower system, which would be 14.5hp at 4,000rpm if rated as the more modern brake horsepower.
With bore and stroke of 82 x 120mm giving a capacity of 633.8cc, the side valve single cylinder engine was to become renowned as a strong and reliable sidecar power plant with plenty of low end torque, and which was changed very little over it‟s long period of production. Nobody knows for sure how many Big 4‟s were built as no records are available for the earliest years. What is known is that 4,700 Big 4 sidecar outfits were produced during WWII out of the nearly 100,00 units the factory built during these years and these were to see service as reconnaissance transport, ammunition carriers, mobile machine gun platforms and the like. With later American involvement, eventually the Jeep took over many of these roles.
The Big 4 was originally built as a flat-tank model through it‟s early production life. Mine is the first of the saddle tank variety from 1929, still carrying the magneto forward of the engine, having the optional lighting set with dynamo, and with the earlier style Druid front forks. The seat is sprung, but the bike‟s rear end is of course rigid, a concept which was not changed until the late 1940‟s. It has a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed gearbox operated by a ball ended lever, which can be adjusted for either hand or foot use. Cost new as a solo would have been about £60 at that time plus extras, whilst the company hire purchase scheme would have parted you from a £15 deposit, with twelve monthly payments of £4 10/- and the extra cost of a sidecar in the vicinity of £13 to £20 depending on the model chosen.
With such a long stroke, proper use of the de-compressor lever is essential for starting, as is correct priming and ignition setting. Too retarded and the spark is too weak to fire when cold due to the flux pattern of the magneto, too advanced and you

risk a damaged ankle on the kick-back! But once it‟s going the steady firing of the engine under load gives a smooth and reassuring feel to the ride.
On the 100 mile course of the recent Mooloo Meander I rarely required to change down, such is the pulling power of this work-horse motor and the gearing was quite suitable for charging along the open road at a respectable 50mph. Originally when obtained, the machine was fitted with a handlebar mounted throttle lever, but change to a twistgrip has given a more natural form of control and less panic at intersections, a most necessary feature given the period style braking, and the fact that the Mooloo was held in the early days of the recently modified „give way‟ rules.
This motorcycle was nicely restored by Wally Hunt whilst a member of the Taranaki Branch, Wally having obtained the machine in a rough and disassembled form from another Taranaki member, Bruce Davidson.

(An account of the breaking of the Auckland - Wellington Speed Record in 1924) During steady rain at 6:34 p.m. on Thursday 13th of March 1924 a muddy and generally travel stained car drew to a halt outside the Wellington Post Office. A four-cylinder 18 hp Essex piloted by the redoubtable Mr. Norman (“Wizard”) Smith, well-known Australian driver, had added a further success to an already impressive list of Australian triumphs by the accomplishment of the Auckland to Wellington trip in 13 hours 19 minutes, a reduction of one hour 13 minutes on the previous record. Both Smith and his mechanic, citizen Ben Campbell of Wellington, presented equally as battered an appearance as their machine, revealing that the entire journey at top speed had been executed in thoroughly inclement weather.
The team was dispatched from Auckland at 5:15 a.m. by an official of the Auckland A.A. a Mr. King. In the pale light of dawn conditions appeared favourable and clear, a state however which was not destined to persist. Perhaps one of the worst ranges of hills in the Dominion from the point of view of contemporary automobilists were the Rangiriri Hills, whose road surfaces consisting largely of clay became exceedingly slippery in times of rain when any machine driven at anything approaching high-speed was want to dither “in great style“ as Smith put it. Approaching Hamilton the exhaust pipe began to loosen. On account of the offending section being by this time red hot and difficult to manage, 15 valuable minutes were wasted.
After two hours 15 mins Hamilton was reached at 7:30 a.m. at that period a distance of 85 miles from Auckland. Speeding past Te Kuiti through the Awakino Valley proceedings were very nearly terminated tragically. Making an exit at approximately 35 mph from the tunnel on this road, much debris containing numerous rocks were deposited on the bonnet of the car. One rock weighing what was estimated at fully three pounds hit Campbell on the head with a force accentuated by the speed of the car. Campbell immediately lost consciousness and would surely have fallen off the machine but for smart action on Smith‟s part who clutched him as he swayed. So bad was the injury that he did not regain consciousness for some 37 mins and then only after Smith had bathed his face with water obtained from down the hillside.
Having started again further misfortune overtook them in being compelled to wait 17 mins for the punt at the Mokau Ferry, which was at the opposite side on arrival. The distance from Mokau to Waitara was driven without incident but a stop was made at the latter to top up oil, petrol and change the rear tires which however Smith did not consider really required changing. When engaged in record runs in Australia he invariably changed tyres every 300 miles. Shortly after Hawera, Campbell as a result of a return bout of dizziness, when asked a direction at a parting of the ways informed Smith as to which direction to take only to perceive some 7 miles later the mistake, thus accounting for an even larger mileage on the apparently notorious Taranaki roads. In the Waitotara County progress deteriorated but at 3:15 p.m. Wanganui was reached about two hours ahead of the previous record time. The run

between Wanganui and Levin was negotiated at a constant 65 mph for the 65 miles. Although the motorists had had a southerly head wind from Auckland, at Levin a gale driving heavy rain was encountered, stinging their faces and retarding progress. Between Paraparaumu and Paekakariki a further delay was experienced owing to the impossibility of overtaking a large truck on the narrow road. Snail like progress was therefore maintained over a distance of 12 miles. After which, as nearly as possible in the circumstances, a final dash was made for Wellington and the finish of what was undoubtedly an adventurous run even at that time. Beaded Wheels - June 1955

members and those who have not done a lot of
rallying.
We will start with morning tea/meet and greet,
then continue with a session of explanation and
interpretation of the branch rally rules and
signage. After a BYO lunch we will drive a short
road run incorporating much of what has been
covered, followed by a period of reflection and review back at the club rooms
concluding at about 2-00pm.

A good turnout for the Mooloo with 59 entries spread nicely over the eras. We were lucky with the weather and the run and social activities were enjoyed by all. Thanks to the sponsors and helpers who make it all possible. The lucky Waikato winner this year was yours truly. We held a combined bike and car event on 14 April which had a short tiki tour to the National Ploughing Champs in St Kilda Road. 20 cars and bikes turned out and again the weather was perfect. There was a lot of interesting machinery on display and also partaking in the Champs, so we had plenty to keep us occupied. Coming up on 18/19 May is the Northland Motorcycle Rally and there will be a small group of us heading north for the event. It is always good to be able to reciprocate support for these events, as they are always keen supporters of our own events. Details for the June run will be in next Venture, but the it will be starting as usual from the clubrooms, with the clubrooms open from 11.30 to BYO lunch and have a natter before setting off.
