Welcome to our May Mint Issue. The first quarter of 2013 has been full of community events, with many great new coins hitting the shelves and making their way to you.

The most exciting coin in this Mint Issue has already been previewed on the front cover! We are very proud of Australia’s first triangular coin, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the opening of Australia’s Parliament House, as it is yet another milestone release that displays the technical expertise we have at the Mint and the strive for innovation.

You’ll also find we are celebrating two more bicentenaries in Australia, the Benevolent Society and the epic crossing of the Blue Mountains, 1813 must have been quite a busy time for the fledging colony and it’s great to be able to recognise it with you all.

To mark the Centenary of Canberra, the Mint has held four separate coin swaps where the public could swap their change for the new Centenary of Canberra 20c circulating coin.

The first coin swap was held at the Prime Minister’s XI match, with Prime Minister Julia Gillard flipping one of the circulating 20c coins to begin the match, with the second coin swap held just over a week later at the Australia vs West Indies One Day International. The third coin swap was held inside the gates at the Canberra Cavalry vs Perth Heat Australian Baseball League Championship Game, and baseball fans were all similarly enthusiastic about the shiny new 20c coin.

The last coin swap (so far) was held at Canberra’s centennial birthday event, One Very Big Day. This coin should be making its way to your pockets shortly, as it is currently being distributed through change by banks across Australia.

The Mint’s unique and exciting event for Canberra’s Enlighten 2013 Festival, Jazz in the Basement, attracted a sell-out crowd eager to be the first to experience a night of live jazz music held in the basement of Australia’s national coin producer.

Usually a dispatch area for both Australia’s circulating coins as well as the coins listed between the pages of Mint Issue, the basement was transformed with the help of black lights and high-vis jackets donned by the guests. Canberra band In Too Deep kept the night rocking with smooth sounds and great vocals, and the High-Vis Bar kept the drinks and snacks flowing.

Feedback from those attending the event was overwhelmingly positive, with calls to reenact Jazz in the Basement in 2014! Jazz in the Basement certainly helped attendees see the Mint in a whole new light (literally) and many wanted to take their high-vis jackets home as a souvenir especially as there weren’t any free coin samples on offer!

The Mint was recognised as the Australian Capital Territory’s biggest exporter of 2011–12 in a report generated by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, largely as a result of our circulating coin partnerships with nations in the Pacific Islands. We are working to ensure that this spirit of industry continues in future years.

Happy collecting!

In any given year the Royal Australian Mint produces hundreds of thousands of circulating and numismatic coins. Few people know exactly who is responsible for designing, minting, and releasing a particular coin, however.

So, with that in mind, we have peeled back the veil in order to introduce you to people who are instrumental in producing some of the finest coins on the planet.

They call themselves “Minties”.

Aleksandra StokicSenior coin sculptor

Award-winning Aleksandra Stokic has worked as a senior coin sculptor and coin designer at the Royal Australian Mint since 2011, and is the artistic mind behind the Centenary of Canberra and Australian Mining designs, among many others.

Aleks grew up in Kucevo, a small town in north-east Serbia, where she developed a passion for art at an early age. A passion, she said, that perhaps hinted at a possible career later in her life.

“When we were young, my brother had a small coin collection and I can remember looking at the coin surfaces and wondering

how anyone could get such intricate designs on such a small space,” said Aleks.

“You could almost say that an idea about my future was born back then.

“In any case, I always knew that my life would have something to do with art.”

After attending the School for Design and University of Applied Arts in Belgrade, Aleks was accepted into the prestigious School of Metallic Arts in Rome where she learnt ancient artistic techniques from the best metallurgists in the world.

A move to Australia was to follow...

$5 FINE SILVER PROOF TRIANGULAR COIN

OF AUSTRALIAN

Australia’s Parliament House was opened on 9 May 1988 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which signalled a new era in the life of the Australian capital. Known at the time as “New Parliament House”, the building design was chosen as part of a two-stage competition process, the winners being New York-based architectural company Mitchell-Giurgolla. Interestingly, the building does not sit on the crest of Capital Hill, but rather rises out of the hill itself. This is meant to

symbolise the building rising out of the Australian landscape, ‘as true democracy rises from the state of things’.

In additional to being the seat of Australia’s federal government, Parliament House is also one of Canberra’s most visited tourist attractions, so it is fitting that the Royal Australian Mint has commemorated the 25th anniversary of the

building’s opening with the release of Australia’s first ever triangular coin.

In May 1813, Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson, and William Charles Wentworth set out on what was to become one of the most celebrated expeditions in Australian history – to find a passage to the western plains of New South Wales.

The three pioneers, assisted by a local guide and three convict servants, rode out from Blaxland’s family farm near South Creek at 4pm on 11 May 1813. Their gruelling, 21-day trek took them through 50 miles of thick forest, across rocky trails, and required them to navigate foreboding mountain passes. Finally, from atop Mount Blaxland,

the party saw what they had come to find – a vast expanse of forest and grassland stretching out before them. Land rich enough, Blaxland wrote, “to support the stock of the colony for the next thirty years”.

The early years of Australia’s currency were tumultuous at best, from the problematic rum trade and the creation of the Holey Dollar and Dump; to the discovery of gold and the production of gold sovereigns. It wasn’t until after Federation that Australia’s first official government printed banknotes were created. It was May 1913, when production of the first 10 shilling notes began,

followed by followed by the £1, £5, £10, and £20, £50, £100 notes in 1914.

Humpback Whale 310225

Scores of people venture to the east coast of Australia between May and October each year to get a glimpse of our graceful visitors. This whale season we celebrate these majestic mammals with the next coin in our Polar Animal series.

Walrus 310222

The moustached and tusked walrus is undoubtedly one of the world's most bizarre-looking mammals. Did you know that they are extremely social animals and can be found lazing in large herds on pack ice? This lovingly crafted coin captures one of the Arctic’s iconic locals in all its toothy glory.

Polar Bear 310228

Did you know Polar Bears aren’t actually white? Their black skin is covered by thick translucent fur which appears white. This interesting fact and more appears on the card holding this frosty-looking coin.

Rockhopper Penguin 310231

Have you seen the movie Happy Feet? The penguins in the film are animated Rockhopper Penguins which makes this coin a great present for a child or even an adult who is a big kid at heart!

2013 THREE COIN SILVER PROOF SET

BICENTENARY OF THE

BICENTENARIO DEL

As part of our celebration of the Holey Dollar and Dump, Australia’s first official currency, the Royal Australian Mint have collaborated with the Royal Spanish Mint (Real Casa del la Moneda) to bring you this exceptional silver proof three coin set.

Coin historians will know that the first ever Holey Dollars were struck from Spanish eight reale pieces, popularly known as “pieces of eight”, and were crafted by convicted forger William Henshall.

Now, in 2013, we celebrate this monetary link between the two nations with the first ever joint coin issue between Australia and Spain. The set features a 10 euro coin, $1 coin and 25 cent coin.

2013 50c Uncirculated CoinAt the point of Australian federation in 1901, all six-governing colonies had been operating their own postal services and issuing their own stamps. This system was changed in March 1901 with the establishment of the Postmaster-General’s Department, meaning all then-current colony stamps became de facto Commonwealth stamps.

For most stamp enthusiasts, Australian philately began properly in January 1913, with the issue of the red 1d (one penny) Kangaroo and Map stamp. This was the first definitive stamp with the sole nomenclature “Australia”.

To celebrate 100 years of Australian stamps, the Royal Australian Mint has released an uncirculated 50c coin that preserves the image of that first Kangaroo and Map stamp.

2013 20c Uncirculated CoinIn 2013, the Royal Australian Mint is proud to announce the continuation of its highly popular Australia Remembers series. With Anzac Day serving as a reminder of those who have – and continue to – serve our nation valiantly, the Australia Remembers series has been created to recognise the people who have made history beyond the battlefields.

This year’s release pays tribute to those members of the clergy who have stood beside our soldiers and offered spiritual, moral, and ethical guidance in times of need.

Now in its 100th year of service, the Royal Australian Army Chaplains Department provides pastoral care to Australian soldiers and their loved ones through times of conflict and peace.

When Walter Burley Griffin’s ambitious and ultimately triumphant design for Australia’s federal capital began with the laying of the foundation stones in 1913, even the most optimistic champion of the city’s development could not have foreseen the success of today’s Canberra.

This richly finished proof coin is struck in fine silver, and depicts the Canberra skyline presented against an artistic impression of that same site one hundred years ago.

2012 $2 Colour Printed Uncirculated CoinThis is the first time that the Royal Australian Mint has created a commemorative $2 coin. It is also the first time we have coloured our $2 coin, which was first released for circulation in 1988.

The red poppy of northern France and Belgium symbolised the sacrifice of blood of brothers, fathers and friends that would never return home from World War I, and was used to mark the Armistice of 11 November 1918. This flower has now been adopted as a sign of remembrance for the fallen across all conflicts. This uncirculated “C” mintmark coin features the Flanders poppy as a symbol of those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom, printed in brilliant scarlet.

Finished using the Royal Australian Mint’s advanced colour printing technology, the 2012 Remembrance Day $2 Limited Edition coin will be an enduring tribute to the memory of the fallen.

from the vaultHeads up! The man behind the 1913 obverseAt the Royal Australian Mint, you can meet the 1913 Shilling and her coin cousins Florin and Halfpenny, and follow their adventures in the Canberra centenary themed exhibition Shilling’s Year—a coin’s eye view of the year 1913.

This installment of From the Vault focuses on the designer behind the obverse image depicted on these three coins. Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal, KCVO, usually known as Bertram Mackennal, was born in Fitzroy, Victoria, on 12 June 1863.

Mackennal left Australia at the age of 19 to study in Europe at the Royal Academy of Arts. His artistic reputation grew as he met and sculpted opera luminary Dame Nellie Melba, actress Sarah Bernhardt and another famous Australian artist, Louis Buvelot.

By the time Mackennal was commissioned to create an obverse design for the new coinage of King George V, he had become one of the most successful civic sculptors of his era and the first Australian artist to have a work purchased for the Tate. He was the first Australian artist to be knighted, and was elected to the British Royal Academy in 1922. He died suddenly on 10 October 1931 as a result of a rupture of an abdominal aneurysm.

For those of you who can’t get to Canberra, there is also an online version of Shilling’s Year—a coin’s eye view of the year 1913 hosted on the Mint’s website, which can be found through the following link www.ramint.gov.au/visit/exhibitions/shilling’s-year
