This couldn’t be further from the truth. Calorie restricted diets and extreme

After

Throat cancer was killing me. How could this happen to me? I eat 90% organic. I consume no sugar. I have an active life style. I am doing everything right. Of course, 50 years of smoking cigars might have a great deal to do with it. Yes, I quit 15 years ago, but the damage had already been done. The slow build up of symptoms didn’t alert me to my situation until I had achieved a stage four squamous cell carcinoma at the base of my tongue. The tumor was so aggressive it grew out of the side of my throat.

That was a year ago. I followed the same protocol we prescribe for our patients, and now the cancer is gone. I contribute our success to a total life style change and Ozone therapy. Because injectable Ozone therapy is illegal

in this country, we modified the program used in other countries to allow us to use it here at the Sentient Temple Healing Center. We have this therapy available here now

for only $25 a treatment. The benefits of Ozone Transdermal Therapy is miraculous. Transdermal Ozone, also known as Hyperthermic Ozone and Transcutaneous Ozone Therapy, is a method in which Ozone is introduced into the body via the skin while sitting in a hot steam cabinet. As the pores of the skin open as a result of being surrounded by the warm steam, Ozone enters the body transdermally (i.e. via the skin).

The Ozone then penetrates the blood, lymph and fat. By allowing Ozone in, and toxins out, via the sweating process that is induced, Transdermal Ozone Therapy is one of the most powerful methods of detoxifying and oxygenating the body in existence. This accounts for the effect that heat stress has in killing cancer. Both heat stress and Ozone kill cancer so this treatment offers the best

opportunity to eliminate cells which are

fermenting sugar anerobically, halt

metastasis and restore healthy aerobic

function.

Call the Sentient Temple Healing Center for your appointment

LifeWorks Wellness Center, one of the foremost alternative health clinics in the US, is now offering far infrared treatments to patients. Recognized by the FDA as a medical device, far infrared rays are anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and can therefore be beneficial in the treatment of a variety of diseases. LifeWorks Medical Director, Dr. David Minkoff explains, “Using a far infrared device mat, we can elevate the internal body temperature to help mobilize old waste deposits, increase circulation and many times magnify the immune system. When you lie on it, the infrared rays penetrate your body and you begin to heat up. Our goal is a temp of 101-102

for 45 minutes.” Far infrared heat is beneficial to people in many ways; it stimulates increased blood flow, aids in regeneration, speeds cellular metabolic rates, promotes the rebuilding of injured tissue, relieves nervous tension, improves the balance of blood pressure, blood sugar, and nutrients in the cells and strengthens the cardiovascular system. For those wanting to know more about far infrared treatments or any of the other protocols offered at the clinic, call 727 466 6789 or visit www.lifeworkswellnesscenter.com. LifeWorks is located at 301Turner Street, Clearwater, FL.

The Maya predicted the world would change, as we know it. Just as predicted our world ceased to exist

as we knew it. Think about it. How many of you are unemployed?? How many of you are living the same quality of life that you were three or four years ago? How

many of you have been affected by, weather, terrorists, home-grown or foreign? How many of you look forward to tomorrow because you know it can only get better because it can’t possibly get any worse? We are sitting on a time bomb of worldwide chaos.

Disease, hunger, poverty, violence, sickness, crime, drugs, youth alienation, family breakdown, social collapse, all these are but the more immediate manifestations of something deeply amiss with our whole way of life. Yet they are part of a bigger picture of a world where war is constantly

featurebeing waged, where vandalism against the natural world is dangerously rife and which is savagely depleting entire species of flora and fauna, where industrial excess is causing a rapidly increasing melting of the polar ice caps, which in turn will drown many coastal cities and create unprecedented wind-storms and climatic disruptions, where economic forces are making life increasingly impersonal and divorced from the realities of personal relationships, as well as our relationships with the natural order, where the same economic forces have become so large as to be beyond control and are now dominating political processes in ways which exclude moral, spiritual and aesthetic considerations.

We just cannot go on in this way. We have produced the first ugly civilization and, for all its technical wonders, the first boring one. Modern architecture has become a mere cost-effective exercise with results which demean us; the architecture of our modern state schools, which might be inspiring the imagination of the young with beauty and the joy of life, are bleak repudiations of any concept of human dignity or nobility and, like so many other public buildings, a repudiation of standards of excellence established centuries before.

What is to be done? We are not advancing civilization, we are abandoning it , a nd u n less we cha nge cou rse profoundly, extensively and rapidly, we are transmitting to our children a world, which cannot fail in the most literal terms to be, a hell on earth.

The traditional political and social institutions which formerly safeguarded our heritage have obviously ceased to function, they are not working except in ways which are promoting or consolidating an ever rising tide of evil mischief; they can no longer provide solutions because they themselves have become part of the problem, and a big part at that.

The crisis is, above all, a crisis of values and a crisis of democracy. Over the last century or more many new forms of power have erupted such as transport, communication and power supplies, for which established democratic procedures have failed to provide an adequate degree

of citizen participation and control. This in turn has produced a quite colossal democratic def icit. As Government has assumed ever increasing control of these new forms of power the authority of Government itself has been greatly undermined by at least two factors.

One is the effect of the sheer weight of the legislative burden involved and the consequent oversight required of numerous matters, properly the responsibility of local councils, so that individual legislators, have become de facto welfare officers for such matters as health, education, social security and so forth. The burden of correspondence and the general role of representation in such matters are at the expense of the proper

surveillance of such important state matters as foreign affairs, economic policy and questions of war and peace.

One effect of this enormous and quite needless burden is for an equivalent increase in the power of the administration. The citizen today is not being governed by his elected representatives; he is being made subject to the power of administration by unelected officials.

The decreased power and status of elected legislators is ref lected in the growing power of the President, for it is he who, with the enormous consequential powers of patronage at his disposal, is able to establish important policies and initiatives which pertain more and more to an authoritarian ethos which is utterly

Page 14: May 2013 Tampa Bay Wellness

14 may 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness www.tampabaywellness.com

at odds with ordinary democratic practice. This is reflected in the other factor,

which has already made Government a cypher of other forces and debilitated its authority to a quite extraordinary degree. After the bombing attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept 11th 2001 our President embarked on a policy of war.

Again, the rights and wrongs of this policy are not here our chief concern, what needs to be noted is that he has no mandate from the people and no democratic authority to pursue this policy, which is indeed in defiance of the findings of a considerable number of opinion polls. What people want, especially when the power and the credibility of their own Government is at stake, is irrelevant, what is relevant is the power of a President to deploy the powers of office and of a complaisant party machine to override the people’s wishes and to destroy democracy itself.

The theory that people elect representatives to execute policies they wish to see implemented by their representatives has been upended so that the chief elected representative, the President, now decides policy and uses his prerogatives to impose them on people.

If there is to be a change of course it must come not from great leaders or the giant centralized forces operating on a mass basis which are doing so much harm, but from ourselves in our own local communities: communities able to establish a moral consensus which will take precedence over all other factors now dominating our affairs so disastrously. If we do not want war, massive economic disruptions, the mad industrialized assaults on natural life, which are now imperiling all human existence, the boundless waste of resources involved in promoting economic ‘growth’ regardless of morals or aesthetics, the debasement of the quality of life, we must imperatively take our destinies in our own hands while there is time.

A NEW RADICAL STRATEGY

Attempts to create a broad-based, centra l ly control led mass polit ica l organization to counter the totalitarian drives of mass centralized governments and their global economic henchmen are not only futile, they betray a profound ignorance of the lessons of radical and reformist history and a failure to grasp the realities of the play of power when conducted on a mass scale.

That history is eloquent of the extent to which such movements whether revolutionary, reformist, pacif ist or anarchist, on a mass scale, are foredoomed to failure on three grounds. They either

cease to have any impact on the popular consciousness, i f indeed they ever achieved any to begin with, or if they succeed they become victims of their success by being corrupted by the forces they set out to oppose, as the record of European Social Democrat of Labor parties amply demonstrates. The third path to failure, as illustrated by the fate of the French and Russian revolutions, is that having destroyed the old order they become even more horrendous exemplars of its worst vices.

It is true that totalitarian governments of small states can be as repressive and ferocious as large ones. The point is they can also be benign and tolerant, whereas

those of giant states have no option, they cannot avoid the need to create a murderous straightjacket of political repression. The gap between government and the governed is so enormous that it can only survive with a huge army of impersonal intermediaries who in turn must follow the book, the fúhrer or the party line if they are to gain promotion, or even just keep their jobs, to say nothing of their lives.

This factor of scale so long neglected or dismissed, as being of no account has become the problem of the modern world. On a small, human scale governments can be abominable, but the same scale can enable human decency to flourish; it has indeed given us some of the greatest

glories of human civilization as, for example of the Renaissance.

But the spirit of the Renaissance went down the drain with the advent of the giantess - Cavour, Garibaldi, Bismarck, Napoleon and others. The power, the independence and the pride of local city-state government was sucked into the mighty maw of giant states, into ‘Italy’, ‘Germany’ and other uncontrollable entities which led direct ly to monster world wars and global economic upheavals, so that today, instead of a honeycomb world of tiny city-states each giving the possibility of full citizen control, and in consequence, the genuine play of democratic power to determine moral objectives, the individual citizen has become

a puppet animated by the controlling strings of giant centralized political and economic forces, which are now arming the world with thermonuclear weaponry and other monstrosities which, if not soon checked, will surely destroy all that human creativity down the centuries has accomplished.

So the principal problem confronting us today is not one of moral campaigning, whether in terms of ‘peace’, economic justice for the third world, GM crops, anti-globalization, anti-nuclearism or any other eminently worthy objective, it is one of power. Power out of control, power running amok, power bent on militarism and economic aggrandizement

feature

once...

featureat whatever cost to the environment, to human social structures or even to human destiny itself, because the scale on which it operates is too large to enable genuine democratic control to be exercised.

And the problem of power can only be resolved, not by mass revolutionary upsurges, nor by mass political parties, whether reformist, ‘labor’, Green or any other color, such mass approaches can only replicate or increase the dangers they ostensibly seek to counter, but by a new awakening. It will be one that grasps the relationship between the centralized mass form of power and the abuse of power, and which perceives these abuses can only be checked by the rejection of the mass itself in favor of the small, the local and the human scale, if only because it is a scale which enables the citizen to exercise precisely those forms of democratic control the mass inevitably denies.

A strategy which accepts this principle as being basic to its objectives will thus need to operate as a matter of course itself on a human scale basis, even if it is one which will incorporate in broad terms the aims of the many initiatives which have erupted across the world in response to the global crisis. Its aim will be nothing less than the re-empowerment of the citizen in small structures of localized government, structures which will embody the power of ordinary people to control and determine their own human-scale policies and destinies.

What is involved here is a charge on every person with a concern to counter the forces of the global crisis to act in a new way. It does not involve the individual joining an organization but in starting his or her own. The global crisis threatens everyone and a new awareness of its dimensions and its import is making the ensuing transformation of consciousness one of the major unmarked milestones in contemporary human development.

It is this new consciousness, which provides the basis for a new approach, one, which increasingly recognizes the scale, factor as a major cause of the global crisis and will act accordingly by seeking new/old forms of local empowerment as a primary response. The need then for a crisis grouping in every locality in

every land is thus the primary radical need of the day. It will, if it is wise, avoid forms of expression which smack of 19th Century lost causes, which, with their sweeping, all-embracing import, divide rather than unite people, and to adopt a general title, which will enable different forms of a potential local consensus to find expression.

Hence it will not be a campaign for ‘socialism’, or ‘market freedom’ or ‘pacifism’ or ‘anarchism’, it will be a campaign to unite people to confront the common danger of power overreaching itself and over-centralizing itself in ways, which are enabling every form of abuse of power to flourish at the price of liberty.

Liberty itself implies the freedom to act and decide, and the new consciousness is now increasingly aware that the power to do so can only meaningfully be deployed in local terms. Power cannot be in two places at once and the power of giant governments and corporations to wreck the environment, to embark on global wars and other insanities is power the citizen does not have.

Hence the primary policy objective of CRISIS COMMITTEES in every neighborhood will be a need to assert the neighborhood’s own power and to deploy it for sane social purposes, and to seek to extend that power to maximum effect.

Perhaps the honeycomb principle is as meet an analogy as any. Some local ‘cells’ may opt to use their power to establish local socialist communities; others may seek to promote local free trade or local capitalism. Important as these questions may be they are secondary to the main one, who decides?

There is no point in arguing whether this can be done, it is now a matter of civilized human survival that it must be done, and done with a due sense of urgency. The signs of social disintegration are all around us, they are multiplying and they are the direct consequence of excesses being promoted by powerful topside forces out of control. The hedonistic and immoral play of market and political gigantism, which behaves towards the environment, towards animal life, towards the soil, the seas, the very sky, and towards the fragile traditions

embodied in our social structures, with no regard whatsoever for moral principle or moral consequence, is amply reflected in the collapsing standards of moral behavior in the general citizen body.

One of the most familiar political adages declares that all power corrupts and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Part of the modern tragedy lies in the fact that it is also the most widely ignored. Our societies are everywhere dominated and saturated with corruption to an extent that the generality of people are largely unaware of its extent or the way it affects their lifestyle. So devout Christians will motor, perhaps from the necessity created by insane national transport policies, to church services, shop at supermarkets, campaign ardently for one mass political party or another, freely purchase chemically adulterated and devitalized foodstuffs, go on packaged holidays, or journey around by air, with no more awareness of the degree of moral corruption involved than a bird in flight may be aware of air.

Nevertheless that awareness is there, it pertains to a modest-sized minority, but it is a minority, which has grown and is continuing to grow and the question before us is how can we impel it to grow more and faster.

This is why CRISIS COMMITTEES are important. Four or five people meeting in a coffee bar or someone’s home to discuss the affairs of the day may appear of trifling consequence, but meeting regularly, with a direct focus on the global crisis, seeking to elucidate its causes and how they may be countered, multiplied around the world can yet, with clarity, vision, persistence, determination and no lack of moral courage, save it. Were the Maya correct in their prognostication? You be the judge.

vital body

For the millions of people around the world who suffer from food allergies, finding nutritionally-equivalent food

substitutes can be a challenge. Many popu-lar food substitutes, after all, contain vastly different ratios of protein to carbohydrates, for instance, or simply do not cut it when it comes to providing adequate, synergistic nutrition for your body. So, to help make this process a little simpler, we have come up with

seven viable food substitutes that work quite well in place of many common food allergens.1) Chia seeds. Popularly termed the super-food of the Incas, chia seeds make an excellent food substitute for tree nuts like walnuts, almonds, pecans, and cashews because they are high in both protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Though not a perfect match, adding a few tablespoons of chia seeds to your morning smoothie or afternoon

beverage will help add many of the same nutritional components to your diet that you would otherwise get from eating a handful of nuts every day. (http://www.naturalnews.com/chia.html)

2) Flax seeds. Flax seeds are similar to chia in that they are high in both omega-3 fatty acids and protein, and help soothe the stom-ach. For people with egg allergies, flax seeds

make a pretty good substitute because they are hearty, nutritious, and develop a similar texture to eggs when ground and mixed with water, which means they are useful for baking. (http://www.care2.com/greenliving/flaxseed-egg-substitute.html)

An added benefit is that flaxseeds are one of the highest known sources of plant-based lignans, which act as powerful antioxidants to scavenge free radicals from the body. However, since these lignans can also act as phytoestrogens, it is best to use flax seeds sparingly in conjunction with other nutrient-dense seeds like chia. (http://www.naturalnews.com/flax.html)

3) Grass-fed meats. Eggs, and particularly those that come from chickens raised on pasture, are naturally high in choline, a nutrient the body uses to synthesize fat for cell membranes, promote cell com-munication, and generate nerve impulse transmissions, among other functions (http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/othernuts/choline/). For those with egg allergies; though, getting enough choline can be difficult. This is where grass-fed meats come in. A half-pound chunk of grass-fed ground beef contains about 150 milligrams of choline, which is roughly comparable to the amount of choline in a single pastured egg. Grass-fed meats are also loaded with all sorts of other important nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids and healthy saturated fats. (http://www.eatwild.com/healthbenefits.htm)

4) Sunflower, hemp, and pumpkin seeds. Getting back to tree nut allergies, there are a number of other “superfood” seeds such as sun-flower, hemp, and pumpkin that provide nearly all the same nutritional benefits, if not more. Sunflower seeds, for instance, are packed with healthy protein, saturated fats, vitamins and minerals, but are also high in omega-6 fatty acids compared to omega-3s. (http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3079/2) Hemp seeds, on the other hand, are exceptionally high in omega-3s, and are an excellent source of vitamin E tocopherols and tocotrienols and trace minerals (http://www.naturalnews.com/029729_hemp_seeds_health.html). And pumpkin seeds are loaded with protein, healthy fats, magnesium, and zinc, all of which are important for good health (http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3066/2). When eaten together, these three superfood seeds make a great substitute for both tree nuts and eggs.

5) Raw milk. If milk gives you trouble due to so-called “lactose intolerance,” you might want to give raw milk a try if it is available in your area. Because it has not been pasteurized, raw milk contains vital enzymes like lactase that naturally break down lactose in the body and make milk much more digestible. And if your raw milk comes from pastured Jersey cows, it will also have an extremely high ratio of healthy saturated fats, complete proteins, vitamins A and D, and what Dr. Weston A. Price historically referred to as “Activator X,” or vitamin K2, which helps promote optimal mineral absorption. (http://www.realmilk.com/what.html)

6) Leafy greens. If milk is completely off limits due to a casein intolerance, leafy greens are a great way to get healthy amounts of bioavailable calcium, as well as vitamins, minerals, and even protein. Organic kale, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, endives, mustard greens, Swiss chard, bok choy, beet greens, and watercress are all excellent substitutes for a wide range of food allergies; in fact, at least as far as

overall nutrient content is concerned. Try wrapping a grass-fed burger in kale leaves, or gently pan-frying spinach and adding it to an omelet (if you can eat eggs), to boost your nutritional profile in the absence of your specific allergen.

7) Quinoa. For the millions of people that have wheat or gluten intolerance, which can include many common varieties of oats, there are already a variety of gluten-free products on the market that make pretty good substitutes. But if you really want to pack a little extra nutrition in your wheat substitute, quinoa is an excellent option. (http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/cereal-grains-and-pasta/10352/2) A single cup of cooked quinoa contains about eight grams of protein, as well as high amounts of folate, and the grain-like food can also be made into, or purchased as, flour for recipes. And if you like oatmeal but are unable to eat it, quinoa works quite well as a warm breakfast cereal, especially when covered in cinnamon, butter, and raisins.

PREVENTING THE AFTERNOON ENERGY CRASH n’ CRAVE

Many of the new clients coming to see me struggle with energy levels and cravings, particularly in the afternoon. Between

the hours of 3-5pm, many people feel lethargic, irritable, and ready for a nap. Unfortunately, the modern day North American office environment doesn’t permit napping on desks - thus, we must consider alternate strategies!

Please realize one important aspect of the symptom “low energy” - chronic illness of all kinds (gut dysfunction and autoimmune conditions, for example) have low energy associated with them. Therefore, if you suffer from chronically low en-ergy levels, please seek out a qualified health care practitioner to rule out major disease.

In my experience, the afternoon energy crash (often combined with food cravings) is caused by

the following:

1. Poor sleep habits

2. Poor food choices leading to chronic nutri-ent deficiencies and blood sugar dysregulation

3. Complete lack of strength training exercise

Poor sleeP habits.Research consistently shows that sleeping

as long as possible (between 7-9 hours/night) provides stress relief, improved cognitive func-tion, memory, and even weight loss. Millions of people suffer from sleep disorders, which, over the long term, can contribute to cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, memory problems, and mental disorders such as depression and

anxiety. In thinking back over the hundreds of clients I’ve worked with over the years, I can recall only one couple who reported long, sound sleep on a regular basis. In my initial client interviews, I discover that most are chronically sleep deprived.

Thus, one of the initial strategies to eliminate the afternoon crash n’crave is to improve sleep habits. Turn the TV off a little earlier, go to bed a little earlier, keep your room cold and dark. When followed, these strategies go a long way in improving sleep and ‘buying back some energy’.

Poor food choices lead-ing to chronic nutri-

ent deficiencies.Let’s be clear - a ton of people eat really

poorly. Food journals I review are full of “junk” carbohydrates, highly processed foods such as

Nutritional and Training Strategies.

Page 21: May 2013 Tampa Bay Wellness

Tampa Bay Wellness • may 2013 21www.tampabaywellness.com

fast foods, chips, dips, tricks, bagels, low fat snack products, and high speed sugar drinks. Over time, a diet devoid of proteins, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats leads to chronic nutrient deficiencies. See, our bodies are designed to extract all kinds of vitamins and minerals from food in order to run cycles inside cells that ultimately produce energy. In other words, all the food we are “supposed” to eat serves a huge purpose: to provide the raw ingredients for energy production inside our cells.

The problem with highly processed foods is that these vitamins and minerals (the raw ingre-dients) aren’t present, or, are present in extremely low amounts. Therefore, over time, if you live on processed food, your body can’t use much of it to generate energy. So, you will be left feeling lethargic, irritable, and ready for big long naps. Not only that, you will find your youthful muscle rapidly being replaced by fat.

To take it a step further, check out the basic biochemistry of energy production. The food we eat (hopefully a mix of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) has to be turned into molecules that enter energy production pathways in the cell. The main molecule is called “Acetyl CoA”, which starts the energy production cycle (see diagram). However, for food to be turned into Acetyl CoA, guess what’s necessary? The B-vitamins (B5, B6, B2, B3, Lipoic Acid), Amino Acids (L-carnitine in

particular), Coenzyme Q10, and minerals such as magnesium, and manganese. Thus, if you have chronic deficiency of any of these, you will have a very difficult time producing energy. You will crash n’crave!

Part of the solution is to change your eating habits, leaning towards a nutrient dense, Paleo/Primal plan. Lots of good animal products, veggies, and fats, with a little bit of fruit and minimal sugar. This style of eating will provide the aforementioned nutrients that are critical for energy production.

comPlete lack of strength train-

ing exerciseI’ve found most new clients tend to try stair

master or treadmill their way out of poor nutri-tion. As they already know, it doesn’t work, and it’s incredibly exhausting. High volume aerobic training has been shown to be fairly catabolic when compared to strength training. People usually avoid strength training due to lack of knowledge, or fear of injury. Rather than try stair master your way out of yesterday’s pretzels, hire a good coach to show you the strength training ropes. What I’ve consistently found is that when clients pull back on the aerobic work and replace it with strength training, they gain muscle, lose fat, and notice significant improvements in energy levels.

Once you blend together improved sleep, bet-ter food choices, and muscle-promoting strength training, you’ll find energy levels returning. Re-member, the millions of cells racing around our bodies need all the fundamental nutrients from good food in order to provide energy!

EnErgy of thE BrEathOur voice has power due to its connection

to our breath. When our breath stops, our spirits move on. With breath, we are infused with the energy all around us. Have you ever noticed how practicing yogis have glowing skin? This is in part because of their deep and complete breathing practice that infuses the body with energy and assists in maintaining yoga asanas (poses).

Our words then become one with the breath. They help us to express our needs and desires. Once we are heard, we can more fully listen to the words of others. Air is sacred to many cultures and is the breath of the Divine. This is why positive affirmations work. Our words have power.

Mantra PracticEHindus, Buddhists and even Native Ameri-

cans have practiced chanting for thousands of years. In the Hindu tradition, the repetition of a mantra is called Japa. This repetition allows you to access the Divine and shift your current mundane reality. You merge with the Divine. You become one with the God/Goddess energy. This practice is said to remove your taste for worldly experience.

You can chant mantras out loud or to yourself. The characteristics of the mantra will reflect the deity honored by that mantra. So you might chant Ganesha’s mantra to remove obstacles in your life or Lakshmi to open yourself to abundance. Mantras are different than prayer because you are taking an active part to shift out of your mundane reality and into non-ordinary reality. By chanting continually, you access a higher vibration. By con-necting to this vibration more and more, your own vibration will also shift to a higher vibration. The sludge no longer sticks; it now slides off.

Karuna rEiKi® and chanting

Karuna translates to compassionate action. Not only are you driven to be compassionate, but you also ACT upon that compassion that swells in your heart. The Mahakaruna (great compassion) is Avalokiteshvara whose other embodiments are Kuan Yin and Chenrenzei. Avalokiteshvara means

“the sound that illumines the world.” I can attest to the amazing heart opening that occurs after the Karuna Reiki training. After the training, you no longer love conditionally, but literally become love itself as the divine joy flows through you.

In Karuna Reiki® we are taught to use our

voices for healing. We chant and tone healing symbols over the recipient’s body in order to bal-ance and raise their vibration. The healing sounds lift out negative residues and fill the person up with sound and light. A very deep healing can

occur via sound healing. Our bodies resonate to a drum’s beat, a bird’s song and the waves crashing to shore.

In Karuna Reiki® we first empower our voices with healing energy, then chant the heal-ing symbols guided by our intuition. The energy of the sound that then flows is guided by some very high vibrational beings of white light. A practitioner’s own vibration must be able to hold the angelic vibrations in order to channel it for the recipient. This is why it is recommended that you be a Reiki Master for six months before taking Karuna Reiki®. Visit www.wheelsoflight.org to book your workshop today.

norsE chantingThe Norse were a group of people used to

describe the ancient cultures of Scandinavia, Iceland, Holland, Greenland and Anglo-Saxon England. The Norse used a form of chanting their runic alphabet called Galdr. It was believe that the runes connect its owner to the universal energies that shape our lives. They were said to control the weather, past, present, future and all aspects of life on this planet.

In Norse mythology, the God Odin received

the runic alphabet after he hung upside down on a tree for nine days and nine nights. Some of you may recognize this visual from the Hanged Man card in the tarot. Using Galdr connects you to Odin via the runes’ chanted sounds. Typically you

don’t chant all 24 runes in a row, but rather you should pick a goal and choose a few runes whose connection would benefit that goal. Frequently runic chants were done over a cup of mead. By drinking the chanted infusion, you would bring the divine energy inside of you.

Here are two links to mantras you may wish to learn.

apples top EWg’s dirty dozen

Washington, D.C. - Apples top the En-vironmental Working Group’s annual Dirty Dozen™ list of most pesticide-contaminated produce, followed by strawberries, grapes and celery. Other fresh fruits and vegetables on the new Dirty Dozen list, a part of EWG’s 2013 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ are peaches, spinach, sweet bell peppers, imported nectarines, cucumbers, potatoes, cherry tomatoes and hot peppers.

EWG’s Clean Fifteen™ list, those fruits and vegetables with the least pesticide load, consists of corn, onions, pineapples, avocados, cabbage, frozen sweet peas, papayas, mangoes, asparagus, eggplant, kiwi, grapefruit, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes and mushrooms.

“When given a choice, more consumers are choosing organic fruits and vegetables or using EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to find an easy afford-able way to avoid toxic chemicals,” said Sonya Lunder, an EWG senior analyst. “They want to eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables without eating too many pesticides. And they want to support local farms and agriculture that is better for the environment.”

EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, now in its 9th year, ranks pesticide contamination on 48 popular fruits and vegetables, based on an analysis of more than 28,000 samples tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and federal Food and Drug Administration.

EWG researchers compile the Shopper’s Guide and the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists from pesticide residue tests conducted by

USDA and FDA scientists, who made public their most recent round of results earlier this year. Since government scientists wash or peel samples before testing them, pesticide measurements reflect the likely pesticide loads of produce when people eat it. EWG’s ranking uses six measures of pesticide hazards, among them, the number of pesticides detected on a crop and the percent of samples testing positive.

For the second year, EWG has expanded the Dirty Dozen™ with a Plus category to highlight two crops - domestically-grown summer squash and leafy greens, specifically kale and collards. These crops did not meet traditional Dirty Dozen™ criteria but were commonly contami-nated with pesticides exceptionally toxic to the nervous system.

In the most recent USDA tests for kale and collards, conducted in 2008, some samples were found to be contaminated with organophosphate pesticides. Organophosphate pesticides are potent neurotoxins that can affect children’s IQ and brain development, even at low doses. Over the past decade organophosphates have been withdrawn from many agricultural uses and banned for home pesticide use but still be applied to certain commercial crops.

Banned organochlorine pesticides were detected on nearly 20 percent of the samples of zucchini and crookneck squash in 2008. Imported summer squash were cleaner. Most organochlo-rine pesticides were widely applied in the 1940s through 1970s but withdrawn from use after studies revealed them to be highly toxic to people and wildlife. They are extremely persistent in the environment and still pollute produce grown in

contaminated soils. Results remained troubling for some baby

foods purchased in American stores in 2011. Green beans canned for baby food tested positive for five pesticides, including the toxic organo-phosphates methamidophos and acephate, detect-ed on 14 and 13 percent of samples respectively. EPA and producers have voluntarily agreed to remove these two chemicals from agriculture due to health concerns. Pear samples tested positive for 11 pesticides, including iprodione, deemed to be probable carcinogen and not registered for use on pears.

Pesticides are toxic by design and created expressly to kill living organisms -- insects, plants and fungi that are considered “pests.” Many pes-ticides pose health dangers to people and have been linked to brain and nervous system toxicity, cancer, hormone disruption, skin, and eye and lung irritation.

Last year, the American Academy of Pediat-rics, which represents more than 60,000 pediatri-cians, for the first time adopted an official posi-tion warning doctors and parents that pesticide exposures from food are potentially dangerous to children’s health.

“By following EWG’s Shopper’s Guide and advice, consumers can feel confident they can buy foods with consistently lower overall levels of pesticide contamination,” said Lunder.

EWG advises people who want to avoid ge-netically engineered food as well as pesticides to buy organically-raised produce. U.S. law does not require labeling of GE foods. Zucchini, Hawaiian papaya and some varieties of sweet corn may be genetically modified.

Our modern world and its ways of thinking are impacting the health of our children. Aside from trying to protect children from toxins in the environment, harmful additives

in foods, and lead in toys, parents must become conscious of other insidious dangers that threaten the health of children.

thE Loss of chiLdhood This may seem like an exaggerated claim, but I refer you to Dr. David Elkind’s books, Preschoolers at Risk, The Hurried Child and All Grown Up and No Place to Go. Elkind presents startling information about how children are being placed under tremendous pressures to achieve too much too soon. Neil Postman echoes this claim in The Disappearance of Childhood. Young children are being rushed off to enrichment classes rather than being allowed to unfold their capabilities according to nature’s timetable. Public schools no longer incorporate recess, that time of the day that allowed children to play freely and experience a great release from concentrated mental work. The childhood games that have been passed from generation to generation have for the most part been lost. Children wear grown-up looking designer clothes. They serve as companions by divorced parents. The boundary between the adult and the child is blurred with children receiving information about the world and grown-up matters long before they are old enough to process it. Children are forced to begin learning to read before the left side of the brain has matured. (at age seven) .

WarMth Children need warmth in order to grow properly into their

bodies. Their inner organs and limbs need to be protected from the cold. Parents give up too easily when children cry, “But

I’m not cold,” and they are allowed to dress improperly – with legs, arms and midriffs exposed to the elements or to indoor frigid air conditioning. Parents must serve as the child’s ego and insist on adequate clothing. Dressing in layers is practical because children don’t feel as hampered in their movements as they do with coats and jackets. Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf education, warns of diseases that appear later in life when the organs have not been properly protected in childhood.

But there is another aspect of warmth that is essential for a child’s healthy incarnation and that is the warmth of human relationship -- warmth that embodies affection, patience, undivided attention, and interest. Too many children today are experiencing the cold of the media as a replacement for familial relationship, not to mention the anger and frustration of stressed adults, the coldness of an empty house after school and the sharp, impatient reprimands that erode self esteem. We should imagine ourselves, whether parent, teacher, friend or just an interested adult as surrounding all children with a loving mantle of warmth expressed through our voices, our gestures, our interest and our reverence for the child.

sLEEP Growing children need 10 to 12 hours of sleep each night.

Even though parents admit that they see the effects on children when they are sleep deprived, we see Little League teams practicing into the night and children shopping at stores such as Wal-Mart at all hours. Many children watch television at night, carrying images and sounds into their sleep life that affect the quality of their sleep. Teachers certainly notice when children see have little vitality for schoolwork. Children do not have an inner body clock that lets them know when they need to stop and rest. Their impulse is to go until they drop. Parents, once again, must be the ego for the child and set a bedtime for them that is as predictable as the sun going down every day. Yes, children can and will stay up until 9:00, 10:00 or 11:00. This does not mean that it is healthy for a child to do so. Develop a bedtime ritual that is predictable and calming: a candle lit, a verse said, a little song sung, a story read – these can make bedtime a pleasure.

rhythM in LifE Look at the rhythm in the outer world: night follows day,

the tides come and go, the seasons cycle through the year. The earth breathes in and contracts in the winter, the earth breathes out and expands in the summer. Having rhythm in a child’s life is akin to Nature’s rhythms. Children need times when they are

expansive, freely playing and breathing out, balanced with times when they are gathered in and quiet. They do best when they have a predictable routine set by their parent – a time to go to bed, a time to get up, a time to eat (preferably with everyone sitting at the table, conversing and not watching TV) a time to help with housework chores, a time to be quiet and restful. Some children are unable to bring themselves to stillness and quiet. Perhaps it is because they never experience the restfulness of a quiet house without the background sound of a television or a radio. They are bombarded with “music” in almost every place of business, with the sounds of lawnmowers, grass blowers, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, traffic roar and boom boxes. It is no wonder that their nerves are frazzled. Rhythm gives strength. Adults must provide children with this rhythmic balance between activity and rest, between quiet and noise, between taking in and breathing out.

PrEMaturE acadEMics Americans are suffering from too much anxiety over whether their children will learn and succeed in school. This fear-based anxiety has brought the idea that the sooner children begin to read and take in abstract information, the better off they are. Over-anxious parents rush out to buy flash cards for infants and highly touted software programs for young children. Kindergartens no longer have a playhouse corner with dolls, tables and chairs and cookware. Creative play, recognized by researchers as a vital part of childhood, is considered non-essential. All play must be “educational,” rather than allowing play for play’s sake. The rosy cheeked, rounded child who lives in a dreamy world of childhood is disappearing and in her place are wan, thin children, awakened in the intellect so early that they neither know how to play nor even seem to want to. They are more comfortable in the adult world. Their intellectual cleverness is highly valued while their childhood needs are ignored.

Kindergartens should be places where children can immerse themselves in fantasy, song, verse, play, story, rhythm, and nature

– all of the natural elements of childhood. Unless a child has a specific learning disability, he will learn to read all in good time. But if children are forced to read before they are developmentally ready, reading is far more difficult than it needs to be. Abstract education devoid of art, music and movement is causing burnout in children as early as third grade. Too much of the wrong thing brought too soon in the wrong way is affecting the health of our children and they are suffering from stomach aches, eye strain, and stress that should have no part in their young lives.

thE rEaL WorLd Children need to experience the real world and not the

mediated world presented on flat screens – the great outdoors, birds singing, breezes blowing on the cheeks, trees inviting them to climb, splashing of water, radiating sunlight, fragrant smells. Children need to experience real human beings who see them, touch them, listen to them, laugh with them and comfort them – not the cold lifeless images on screens. Children need to move their limbs - to climb, run, jump, crawl, hop, skip, swim and swing. Children who watch television, even for a short time daily, are filled with images that come at them from outside.

When images are given to them they do not need to make their own inner images and so this capacity that is necessary for reading, for writing, for thinking, and for creating is diminished. When children are given the option of watching screens, that is exactly what they do – watch. They become heavy limbed, they lack initiative, they don’t learn how to play and entertain themselves, and they are over stimulated. This stimulation is so unmanageable for some children that they literally “bounce off the walls” after watching. Give kids a shovel and permission to dig a hole somewhere in the back yard and you will be amazed at the energy, the creativity, the cooperation, the focus and the joy!

Look, really look at your children. If they are lethargic, scattered in their thought life, unable to play and to amuse themselves, suffering from school stress, nervously hyperactive, irritable, unable to complete a task, whining, demanding, wan, thin, uncoordinated – they are not healthy children. Healthy children are happy, active, calm, able to play, interested in the real world, bright eyed and rosy cheeked, rounded and graceful in movement, full of energy, and willing to do their part.

Would you like to optimize your health and your pet’s health? Would you like to have you and

your pet live your lives to their fullest potential and be strong and vibrant for all your living days ? There ARE things we can do, and things we should avoid to help us achieve these goals of life, liberty and the pursuit of treats ! Having good DNA, (i.e. good genes) helps a lot. But we can turn off good genes and turn on bad genes by influencing the epigenomes. This is a new branch of science that is bringing to light the influence of diet and lifestyle on our health. Studies have shown that BPA (found in plastic drinking bottles) can influence adults, but especially can deleteriously influence babies during gestation and could be one of the reasons behind the current obesity epidemic. Flame retardants in rugs, furniture and clothes could be influencing the thyroid and be responsible for feline hyperthyroidism. Insecticides in the yard can deleteriously affect dogs and could be responsible for

bladder cancer. Artificial colors and/or preservatives can be detrimental to the immune system – leading to immune compromise, auto-immune disease and allergies. Antibiotic use can lead to ‘leaky gut syndrome’ which can allow large protein molecules access across the gut wall into the blood stream and initiate food sensitivities and allergies. Once our immune system is compromised, aberrant cells that develop can be missed by the immune system and allowed to grow - resulting in cancer and malignancies. So what can one do? Avoid known carcinogens as much as possible, of course! This includes giving only enough vaccinations to protect our pets from contagious diseases and minimizing chemical treatments. But, the key is living a healthy lifestyle. Proper nutrition is especially important when we are growing, but even as adults we make new cells – quality food and clean water are essential to build and maintain our physical body. Exercise – to some a 4 letter word – is essential to keep strong

and flexible and keep our ‘chi’ energy moving and our brain as well as our other tissues oxygenated. For emotional health

– minimize stress, but don’t eliminate it. If we have no challenges at all in life – how are we to grow? Don’t dwell on negative thoughts or experiences. Surround yourself with positive people and pets. For Spiritual health–connect to a greater being–which ever God you choose – be faithful. If you choose no God, be true to yourself and your beliefs. Be in this world more than just for your own benefit – give to those less fortunate than you. Help protect and nurture our Mother Earth. Help the world be a better place – even if it just a tiny improvement – it is beneficial. LAUGH, LOVE as unconditionally as your pet loves you & BE JOYOUS

We live in a very stressful, toxic world. Our jobs are often stressful and sometimes require

us to do repetitive motions of typing or lifting for hours at a time. We spend many hours in our cars, multi-tasking. Our food is packaged, processed and poisoned. Our grains and vegetables are genetically altered. Our produce is treated with pesticides, and our tap water contains

chemicals, hormones, medications and pesticides. Many people have toxic over-load. They have difficulty concentrating, have unhappy digestive systems, and have pain in the tissues and joints. Our minds are cluttered with the traumatic news of the day. Designing a restorative, proactive maintenance program can greatly improve health. Some elements of a successful program may include body work, exercise,

meditation, a healthy diet and internal cleansing.

Restorative Therapy helps bodies restore balance, restore harmony and relieve pain and stress. The combination of many techniques can enhance your program and may include Swedish, neuro-muscular, or deep tissue massage, Cranio-sacral therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, and colon hydrotherapy.

Restorative Therapy for Health, Stress Management

and Pain Relief restorative therapy is a helpful

tool in the process of life.

Muscles are controlled by body chemicals, by nutrients, and by the nervous system. The connective tissue or fascia binds specific cells to tissues, tissues into organs, organs into systems, cements muscles to bones, and ties bones into joints. Every part of the body is connected by virtue of the fascial system. Myofa-cial release stretches the connective tissue and restores flexibility. Combining Myofacial release and neuromuscular therapy is a very successful method of relieving pain. Often headaches, back pain, arm and leg pain can be caused by trigger-points that are neurologically overactive. These points refer pain in a pattern to another area of the body. Trigger points respond quickly to ice and stretch techniques, releasing pain and restoring normal tonus to the muscles.

Craniosacral Therapy, a gentle method for the detection and treatment of the imbalances and restrictions of the craniosacral system, releases the nerve passages and restores movement of cerebrospinal fluid through brain and the spinal cord, restoring harmony to the body. Because Craniosacral Therapy is so gentle, it can be used on all ages.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is very gentle patterned therapeutic massage used to increase lymph fluid movement. By increasing the lymph flow, the body is able to eliminate excess fluid and improve the overall function of the cellular system. Lymph is responsible for moving toxins and viruses away from healthy cells and carrying germ-fighting materials to cells. Lymph fluid moves up the body and relies on the action of external forces to create a lymphatic pump. When the lymph system and lymph nodes are damaged through disease or surgery, it is sometimes possible to re-pattern the lymph flow to active nodes and restore balance to the system.

I start my treatments by evaluating the body posture and muscle tensions, both standing and lying down. It is important to notice the tilt of the head, the position of the shoulders, of the hips and feet, and curves of the spine. All of this information gives me clues to what is happening in the soft tissue of the body.

I use appropriate pressure in treatment. It is not how hard you press but how well you can facilitate change in the tissue that relieves the pain and problems

For example, treatment for neck or jaw pain starts with cra-nial therapy and massage to the head, face, neck and shoulders. If the lymph is congested, then I proceed with manual lymphatic drainage; if trigger points are found, I release them quickly with ice and stretch; and, if the fascia tissue is contracted, then Myofa-cial release is most applicable.

Only after these issues are resolved do I use a lotion, liniment or essential oil combined with massage to complete the treat-ment in that area. Then I move to the next area that is having problems. After working through the problem areas, the body becomes more balanced, less reactive and less painful. The Goal is to eliminate pain and restore health to the tissues. Massage restores our feelings of health and harmony

When our tissues are toxic the response to therapy is slowed. Detoxification can assist in the process of restoring balance to the organs and tissues. Detoxification can begin with colon hydrotherapy and a cleansing program. If there is a severe problem, working with a doctor that specializes in advanced

detoxifications combined with colon hydrotherapy can be very beneficial. To define body cleansing, think of more than colon cleansing. Detoxification must be viewed as a total body process for all the organ systems and the channels of elimination. The 5 primary channels of elimination are the colon, the kidneys, the skin, the lungs and the liver. Effective ways to detoxify use colon hydrotherapy, dietary changes, Lymphatic Drainage, herbal cleansing programs, saunas /steam baths and skin brushing, fast-ing, nutrient supplementation, and exercise.

Restorative therapy can alleviate low-back pain and improve

range of motion, increase joint flexibility, reduce spasms and cramping, relax tired overused muscles, and reduce post surgery adhesions and swelling. Restorative therapy enhances the im-mune system by stimulation of the lymphatic flow and by reliev-ing the body of toxic stress. It can relieve headache and TMJ pain. Restorative Therapy can help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts. Massage releases en-dorphins —amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller. Developing your own maintenance program can greatly enhance your health and the health of your family.

Every part of our body; cell, bone, tissue and molecule was born with a normal healthy frequency of vibration called “Chi or Energy”. During the

early years of growing up, we build layers of imbalances and blockages of this vital Chi/Energy. This imbalance/blockage stops or limits our normal frequency to our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical levels of our well being. We literaly “get out of tune or sync” with our own natural and normal frequency.

The Chi/Energy can be returned or restored by the use of powerful ener-getic tools or modalities such as ACuPuNCTuRE-both needle or Acutron/Electrical; CRySTALS or STONES; SOuND (Tuning Forks, Mantras, Crystal Bowls, and Prayer); and your own SENSiNG SySTEM CALLED CHAKRAS, which are energy vortexes within your own body.

ARIESIt is natural for you to try and gain more awareness as you juggle a full plate. Be aware that superficial and quick judgements are not your friend right now. Practice simplicity, tactile awareness of key situations via physical visits and evaluations as well as sticking to the basics will go a long way to making the progress you desire!

TAURUSNot a good idea to make promises now or any other time for you do not know if you will be able to keep them. Promises are mistaken ideas that are used to try and control people and outcomes. They are of bondage rather than bonding. They tend to look good on the outside but have bars on inside. And think twice before you do any new ones.

GEMINI WOW…you may have closed your eyes to certain options without even realizing it! Refuse to accept any stereotypical plans for action or expectations of others. Do not give in to others opinions or hide your viewpoints. Work closely with those who speak the same language while at the same time you quietly develop new ideas. Listen to yourself, most of all!

CANCER it may be time to step out more in the creative arts. Consider painting, singing, dancing, sculpting or any kind of class that can help you light up your creative spark. Do not allow delays or distractions any longer. There is a long period of expansion ahead for you starting this summer so lets make the most of it!

LEO Seek ways to cut through obstacles and motor on through. It is a crucial time of development that is best served by taking on more responsibility to shift structures, habits, patterns and routine ways of living. There is truth in the saying, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

VIRGO Any current conditions that you have outgrown or seem stagnant you are advised to let go of. Your life is taking so many nice and new turns. Resolve never to turn back to unrewarding or stuck, doubtful ways of being. Make sure you sweep the decks completely clean and resolve from now on that you will settle for nothing less than all good things!

LIBRASometimes we get stuck for we are convinced our beliefs or perspectives are correct and others just need to see the truth. Wrong. Efforts now need to be turned toward dismantling old infrastructure that can ultimately challenge what you have believed up to this point. There are always at least two ways of looking at things, yours and others. Forge links to bigger worlds.

SCORPIODo not feed energy to situations anymore that actually feel kind of cold and asleep. There are those that will not move no matter what you do and stubbornly will resist any efforts to help them to do otherwise. Just let things go and focus more on what you are trying to create and what you would like to do. If you do not, you can wake up years down the road and realize you are in the same place—waiting.

SAGITTARIUSIt is not enough to just talk your walk…you have to do it. It is important to live the way you feel is the best way for you. No longer can you permit yourself to engage superficially and ignore what is going on inside. Evaluate where you need to make changes and do so. Better sooner than later.

CAPRICORNIt is time to focus more on sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Look around for ways to volunteer or take on a mentorship. You have quite a bit of worthwhile experience and you can benefit those beyond your current circle. You can find that this simple sharing can open your heart as well as your life in ways you did not expect!

AQUARIUS Sometimes it is not enough to know you have the skills or the talents. What you need to ask yourself is how much love you have for whatever it is you do and what are your reasons for doing it. This may seem like a question that has no real value to situations facing you now but this would be a miscalculation. It is critical to move into a bigger picture of not only what you are capable of, but also what brings you joy.

PISCES-You can be held accountable for recent conflicts that actually have their roots in long ago. Hold taking any kind of action until you are clear on the details. This is the preferred strategy for all matters of importance and be mindful of how you communicate. Sometimes things need to settle down in an energetic sense before they fully resolve.
