MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATEIllustrious Sir, Gerry Massey

As 2014 began, I thought of how the year would be divided in 3 sections of 4 month intervals. The first section is in the history books. Now it is time to evaluate what worked and

what can be improved upon. I am really excited how well the pistachio sales are going. By the time you read this, we will have sold over 2,000 bags just within the first 2 months! Remember, this project will continue through the end of the year! Great job, Nobles and Ladies! We have modified the 365 Pay It Forward Program to include Life Members now as well. Check with your Divan members should you have any questions on this. There are a few other projects we are improving as well. You should see those improvements upon our return at the end of summer.

El Zaribah has had many visitors from all over the country in the past few months. Every time I have spoken with them, I have heard what great hosts you all are. Each of them was welcomed with a smile and open arms. Many of them want to come back and affiliate with us. That is what it is all about!

Please consider coming with Lady Janet and me on one of our weekend get-a-ways. We will be going to the Bisbee, Tombstone area over the Memorial Day weekend and we will spend the Labor Day weekend at the Grand Canyon. If you are interested, please give us a

call for the details. There will be tours, shopping and plenty of fun! Finally, I know many of you are traveling to your summer homes soon. Please travel safely.

While we at El Zaribah may only be your part time family during the winter months, we love you full time, year around. We look forward to seeing you again in the autumn. For those staying in the Valley, you know the Shrine never really goes “dark”, we may “dim” the lights for the summer, but there is always something going on at El Zaribah. Have a great Summer and see you soon!

Yours in the Faith,Gerry

Murder Mystery 2014We’ve had a lot of feedback that the Murder Mystery last year was fun for both participants as well as the audience so we will be putting on another one this year. It will be on Oct 10, 2014 and the fundraising will benefit the General Fund this time. So save the date and let me know if you would like to participate.

Gerry

Love to the Rescue AmbassadorTHE PUBLIC RELATIONS VOICE March 2014

Former patient and award-winning actor RJ Mitte has been named a national Love to the Rescue Ambassador™ for our health care system’s 2014 Love to the rescue® campaign. Mitte will share his personal story of receiving both treatment for cerebral palsy and encouragement to pursue his dreams through a series of public service announcements and other appearances. Mitte is best known for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on the AMC television series Breaking Bad.

At age 3, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition affecting muscle tone, movement and coordination. It sometimes affects other areas, including speech. He was referred to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, LA, where he received care and treatment throughout much of his childhood, and, as a result, overcame many of the effects of his condition.“I can’t

t h a n k S h r i n e r s

Hospitals for Children enough for what they did to help me overcome the effects of cerebral palsy. Had it not been for my doctors and therapists, I would not be walking and talking as well as I am today, “said Mitte. “I know first-hand that Shriners Hospitals for Children is a special place where kids are given a life of possibilities because they send Love to the rescue every day.”

We are pleased to have been able to improve Mitte’s physical abilities, and proud to have him working with us today.

“We are honored to help RJ share his story so others living with disabilities see that there really are endless possibilities to what they can achieve,” said John Cinotto, Imperial Potentate. “Every day Shriners Hospitals for Children sends Love to the rescue by encouraging patients to accept no limits throughout their treatment process. Working with RJ will help us highlight the innovative pediatric care available at Shriners Hospitals for Children.”

The Power of Social MediaBy, Krista Harmsworth, Arabian Tales Staff/El Zaribah Social Media Team

A note from the Editor...Barbara Hineman has agreed to provide us with stories each month about some of our Shrine Kids. Here is another in the series.

Since the beginning of April, the Social Media team for El Zaribah has been working on getting the El Zaribah Shrine page on Facebook up and really running (www.facebook.com/el.zaribah). As a part of this process, we have been making posts and working hard so members can share what they have been up to as they travel through their day.

Within the first 36 hours of really working to get the page going, we received a lovely note from a parent of one of “our” kids, Nancy D Orta. Nancy shared a couple of pictures of her beautiful little girl, Avianna, and wrote the following:

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for making it possible for my daughter Avianna and I to be able to get to Shriners in Utah . We would be lost without all the amazing things you guys do!

“Thank you, “Nancy”

When I approached Nancy about sharing Avianna’s pictures and story, Nancy was quick to reply, “Yes absolutely! Thank you we are pretty excited with the progress in such little time. This couldn’t have happened with out Shriners!”

Please know that the work you do and the volunteer time you take with El Zaribah IS noticed by the parents who entrust their children to the Shrine system. This also goes to show how powerful Social Media can be.

Please continue to share on our Facbook Page and we will continue to promote the wonderful work done by the members of El Zaribah

Secondly, the Clinic in September has been changed to Sep 19, 2014 so that it will not conflict with the Circus. A big thanks goes out to Illustrious Sir Hut Hutson for getting this date changed for us.

2014 Parade Information

Out & About

This year, J C Reece and Randy Peters have been working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades.

We have made contact with all the parade Units and Clubs who occasionally have trouble getting members to attend parades. Because of attendance, many Units and Clubs have little cars that do not get driven. Members who could be marching or playing an instrument are instead driving a truck that pulls a trailer. In some instances, nobody has been there to handle the camels so they have had to stay home. These are a few examples of problems we have had.

We are now in contact with the parade groups to find out if they have cars that will not be driven, trucks that pull trailers that need a driver, help with camels, etc. Then, we contact the new Nobles.

We also ask all new Nobles to sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah.org) for event notification. When they are available they need to contact the Oriental Guide or the High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club.

This has been working since the Tempe Veteran’s Day parade last November. We have had up to 6 empty parade positions in the past few months that we have filled with new Nobles.

It is working well. We not only help the Unit or Club get a full roster, but the new Nobles meet and get to know many of the Nobles in the Units and Clubs. This is not a recruiting tool, but a way for new Nobles to get an idea of what each group is about and help utilize our parade attractions.

If you are a new Noble to El Zaribah, and would like to help us out and allow our Units and Clubs to utilize all of their parade equipment, cars, animals, etc. please contact J C Reece (Oriental Guide) 602-531-6545 or Randy Peters (High Priest & Prophet) 480-296-3957 .

pounds of great tasting beef brisket done to perfection and not a scrap left over! WOW, can’t believe how great it was. A special thanks to Culinary

member Dave Smith for telling me about the hot gloves, they really saved our hands. We may get this cooking figured out in another 30 years.

We have finally chosen new unit shirts! Not sure when their debut will be, but it is sure to be a “not to be missed event.”

Mike Fenno has a #3 Dale Earnhardt car parade car for sale. When we sold the other 2 cars we donated $1,000 to the Temple.

Remember, I am the guy with the clean apron and Hal is the one with beans on his shoes, I won’t say what Ralph is wearing, but hopefully it is a new Unit shirt!Ken Conner, Culinary Scribe?

Director’s Staff UnitThank you to everybody who helped

with the “Big Day” on March 22. The Director’s Staff worked the Ceremonial with setup and tear-down and held the Steak Fry and Official Visit all on the same day. The Executive Committee

sincerely thanks each and every one of you for the great day we put on.

We will need volunteers for Lake Havasu, so set that time in October aside. We encourage you to join us as it is always a great time. .

We are always looking for new members so if you are interested please join us at 6PM in the Red Fez Room for dinner prior to our meeting. You and your Lady will be our guests.

Greeters UnitThe Greeters Fishing

Tournament is on Saturday, June 21 centered around Ted and Denise Brownell’s home on

the on the Rim. The entry fee is $25 and prizes will be gift cards from Bass Pro Shop. Awards will be given for the longest and heaviest fish caught in a lake or stream that is on “the rim” as well as to the youngest and oldest anglers. We will be joined by legendary football coach, Frank Kush, who will offer fishing lessons with his own, unique style and flair. There will also be a

contest for anyone who can catch a fish bigger than coach Kush’s largest. Many thanks to Chuck Richards and Jasper Nichols, Honorary Greeter, for their help in the planning of this event.

Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a few good men. Join us at 5:30 PM for libations and dinner before our Unit meeting.

Legion of Honor UnitOn April 6 Legion of Honor members

presented the Colors at a luncheon put on By Arizona Lodge #2. The luncheon recognizes all the civic activities that a local Marine Veterans Group does.

It must be said that Ex-Marine SGT. Jeremy Cottrell looks real sharp in his Marine uniform. We of the Legion of Honor are honored to have participated with Jeremy in this function and appreciate him for inviting us. By the way, our color guard consisted of a member of each branch of service. Now, that’s unusual!

The Legion of Honor Unit consists of Nobles that have served honorably or are currently members of the armed forces of their country. Eligible Nobles and their Ladies are invited to check us out. Many of us meet for dinner in the Red Fez room prior to the meeting.Scribe - PC / Adj. /Fin. Officer - Virgil Johnston

Motorcycle UnitWhat a night we had at the

Bowling Palooza. It took 50 volunteers, and of that number 13 were from outside the Unit. Thanks to all of you for helping.

Special thanks to the chairmen Mick Degn and Jerry Weiers, Mayor of Glendale. It was a long but rewarding night and we will be presenting a whopping check to the Potentate in the near future.

We welcome Manny Campana and David Aguayo to our unit. The Motorcycle Unit has a Facebook page and we add pictures and information every day so search for us and like our page, please.

Here’s a big thanks and applause to our officers for 2014 who have worked tirelessly to make everything happen.

Mounted Patrol Unit Howdy folks, we are looking forward

to some interesting and fun summer activities. We have the Prescott parade and cookout at the Haylo ranch over the first weekend of July

and will be participating in the Payson Parade the middle of August. Please stay tuned for times and exact places and for last minute changes should there be any.

Although we sometimes do not have a regular monthly meeting immediately after a ride, we did have a meeting in May and we discussed a few topics. We would really would like some input from all the members about the new jacket or vest.

The ride at the beautiful EZ Ranch was once again fantastic, and successful. Approximately 50 folks had a great time visiting, participating in the round up, competing in the riding events, and of course chatting and singing by the campfires. Please try to attend and bring a friend to the next ride.

For sure, try to make any and all functions you can. The unit needs you.

We hope to see you soon.Vaya Con Dios

Patrol UnitThe Patrol won the first

prize at the Bash Before the Ball. We also managed to fill more than three tables at the

Pote’s Ball. Most of the time we do our duties and go out for Pizza, but this year we stayed for dinner and brought Pizza to the Pote. This was all done to support Ill Sir Gerry Massey who is a member of the Patrol and his Lady Janet, who is a very active member of the Patrol Ladies.

We held our annual St. Patrick”s Dinner. The next day we were involved in the Ceremonial and Arch Degree as well as the short Parade. I am proud to say that the Patrol has three of its members active with the Ritualistic and Arch Degrees. We also have several members who volunteer at the Shrine Clinics. If you would like to join a unit that is really involved, then check out the Patrol Unit.Ken

Transportation UnitWe are proud to announce that we

have three new members; Matt Armer, Marvin Klassen, and Keith Watermann. Matt has had his little truck out three times already and Keith will have his

vehicle parade ready pretty soon. Marvin got to drive in his first parade and is looking for his own truck. Tom Willet has also brought another semi-truck into our parade team. He recently led our parade troop and did a fine job. We also had a good showing at Roadrunner Park in Scottsdale. This growth and participation is exciting.

We were proud to participate, along with the Air Patrol, at the Bash before the Pote’s Ball presenting different forms of transportation. We served Chili along with Ham and Beans to those in attendance. We had pictures posted of various events.

Upcoming on our calendar is a parade in Yarnell on May 10 and a parade in Williams on May 24th.

We are in an exciting time with a lot of energy and want all of our members to enjoy the growth and activity.

Apache Wells Shrine ClubWe are having a Steak Fry for

members and guests on May 17th. Since the club goes dark from June till September, this will be the last chance

to get together as a club until fall. See you there.

Have a good summer and we will see y’all in the fall. The first fall function will be the Steak Fry at the Gazebo on September 18th at 5 PM.Jack Roberts, Scribe

Computer ClubOur April regular meeting was well

attended. Considerable discussion occurred regarding Microsoft’s ending support to the Windows XP Operating

System (April 8, 2014) and what the options are: Upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1.

Our “Fix-it Time” was busy with a number of problems including that removing “junk” program files from a new laptop, what the basic files a rather novice user needs to have on a new machine that will replace an “XP” machine, and a machine apparently losing its

battery backup etc. Our Gurus do great work with these challenging problems and they are appreciated.

We enjoy meeting in the Red Fez room for dinner and visiting with each other prior the meeting.Virgil Johnston, Club Secretary

Drum and BugleThe Drum & Bugle Corps lost another

former member with the passing of Ken Smith in late March. Ken was also a former member of the Roadrunners Our Condolences go out to Ken’s family.

We’ve had a tough year thus far with former members. Illustrious Sirs Dave Humphrey and Larry Kesselring were also former Drum & Bugle members. Our thoughts and prayers continue for Dave’s and Larry’s families. They are truly missed.

The Drum & Bugle Corps will probably take a month or two off from practice during the summer, but we will be back again practicing in August for the Cornfest. During the summer months we lose a few that spend their time in cooler places. We’ll do our best to encourage them to hurry back to Phoenix to join us in preparation for our Cornfest performances.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.Alto Bugle

Mobile Nobles Shrine ClubIll Sir Jerry Massey, along with Divan

Mobile Nobles Shrine Club and will be used for the Patient Protective Clothing Program and

the Family Housing Program. Representing the Mobile Nobles were Nobles Fred Shaw, Junior Grimm and John LeClair.

have been picking up. Our rentals show signs of improvement and our Shrine events have increased. The

Provost Club has been working to support all these functions. Provost Officers check the duty roster and try to work some of them.

West Valley Shrine ClubOur March meeting was very well

well. We have gotten very positive comments from everyone about the freshness of the nuts and minimal

Daughters of the NileThe theme for the Daughters of the

Nile this year is to “follow your stars”. Our goals are sharing, caring and loving each other while we provide monetary support to the Shriners Hospitals for

Children. We are the second largest contributor to the hospitals after the Shriners themselves. Last year we donated over $1.5 million to this great philanthropy.

Our bags are packed and the officers of
