Materials Awareness Programme was organized for all the schools in Hosur with Ashok Leyland School as the venue which was a great success and well participated by the school children. The materials Advantage chapter at Manukkula Vinayagar Engineering College has been revived after four years and the Materials advantage chapter in IIT is vibrant and flourishing with activities, thanks to the efforts of ASM members from IIT for their notable contribution in guiding the chapter. On the communication front consolidated email list of members is used to intimate and remind the members of technical meetings. Face book account has been created exclusively for the Chennai chapter: (https://www.facebook.com/asminternationalchennaichapter).

The information on all the activities and photos are uploaded in the face book account for the members’ reference. The Chennai chapter website is periodically updated. ASM chapter is proud to induct seven new members in to the chapter and revive three old members. Efforts are on to add new members and reinstate the lapsed members. Thrust has been given to bring in young professional members in to the chapter and the managing committee towards long term benefits. I am sure with the solid foundation already laid, the new committee will perform to exceed the current levels and create new bench marks in the areas of focus and make Chennai Chapter more vibrant and vivid.

It has been a satisfactory performance last year with main focus on Technical meetings, unique technical Programs, student outreach and material advantage chapter activities. Nine Technical meetings were organized and three of them were sponsored meets. Three ASM –IIM collaborative lectures and Courses were organized for the benefit of the members, participants from industries, research, academic and student’s fraternity. This is in addition to the four courses organized with the overseas speakers who participated in HTSE 2013 as part of HTSE conference and exhibition.

Training Programs and Workshops

• A One-day course on Refractory Metals was organized under the ASM-IIM programme named

Teach the Teacher on 11th February, 2014 in IIT Madras.

Achievement by Members

• Dr. G. Sundararajan, Director of ARCI, and Professor, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras was awarded Padma Shri by Government of India. He received the award during Republic Day Celebrations.

• Dr. B. S. Murty, Professor, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras has been elected as Fellow of Asia Pacific Academy of Materials (FAPAM) and Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (FNA) in 2014.

• Dr. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi of Indian Institute of Technology Madras was awarded 2014 MPMD Young Leader Professional Development Award of TMS. The Award was presented to him in 2014 TMS Annual meeting held on 16-20 Feb. 2014, in San Diego. California, USA.

Technical Lectures/Meetings • ASM-IIM Visiting Lecture on Refractory Metals: Introduction and Recent Developments was delivered by

Dr. Prabhat Kumar Technology, Fellow and the Managing Director of H.C. Starck India Ltd., on 10th February, 2014

• A technical talk on Recent Developments in Automotive Steel/Special Bar Quality (SBQ) Steel was delivered by Dr. Luis Colembergue, Global Technology Leader at Gerdau Special Steels on 17th March, 2014.

• The Executive Committee Meeting held at Hotel Radha Regent Friday 21st March 2014 at 6.30 PM. Mr. William J. Bernard, President & CEO and Mr. Dan Goodman, Vice President of M/s. Surface Combustion Inc. USA addressed the committee members at 7.30 PM followed by Dinner. M/s. Surface Combustion is a leading manufacturer of Heat Treating equipment, head quartered in Maumee, Ohio, USA.

• They are closely involved and support the activities of ASM International. Mr. William J. Bernard is a past president of ASM International and they have instituted the HTS-Surface Combustion Emerging Leader Award during the centenary of ASM International. Mr. Bernard has interacted with the officer bearers of ASM International, Chennai Chapter.

• A talk on Industrial Applications and Promise of Nanotechnology was delivered by Dr. T. S. Sudarshan, President and CEO of Materials Modification Inc., USA, on 18th April 2014.

• A Dinner Meet was organized with Mr. B. Muthuraman, Chairman, Tata International Ltd and Vice Chairman, Tata Steel Limited on 4th May, 2014. This was jointly organized with Madras Metallurgical Society.

Obituary Mr. E.K. Parthasarathy (22-07-1936 - 11-02-2014) Founder member of ASM International Chennai Chapter, an engineer par excellence, a renowned industrialist and the Chairman of Madras Engineering Industries, Mr. E.K. Parthasarathy, passed away on February 11, 2014. Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University and Master degree holder from University of Cranfield. He embarked in manufacturing of automobile components and specialized in manufacturing Slack Adjusters. He obtained seven worldwide patterns including three in Slack Adjusters. ASMICC mourns the sad demise of EKP and shares the bereavement with the members of his family.

Materials Technologies Dr. P. Sivakumar, Director, CVRDE

Keeping in view the importance of materials technologies, the material group of Combat Vehicles Research and development Establishment (CVRDE), DRDO has contributed to the specialized requirements of Armed Forces.

Indigenization: Powder Metallurgy technology for Sintered Clutch Plates and brake pads: CVRDE is involved in the design and development of automatic transmissions in the power range of 150 – 1500 hp. Variety of clutch plates ranging in sizes and torque capacities are used in gearbox, torque converter and mechanical steering unit of these heavy duty transmissions. The clutch plate is a crucial element as the performance of the transmission system depends on the quick response of the clutches. There is a need to develop them indigenously to overcome the import dependency. Classical powder metallurgy technique involving powder blending, consolidation and pressure sintering was used for developing sintered bronze based clutch plates of outer diameter 238 mm & 402 mm with corresponding inner diameters of 169 mm & outer diameter 330 mm respectively as shown in Fig. 1. SEM Micrograph (Fig. 2) shows the uniform distribution of constituent powders in the matrix which is sintered to the steel back plate. The sintered brake pads of ARJUN MBT were indigenized in a similar manner. Dynamometer tests were conducted to assess the performance of both the imported and the indigenously developed clutch plates and the brake pads. The friction and wear performance was found to be comparable.

Because of its excellent thermal properties, it absorbs enormous amount of energy in the form of heat. The C-C composite brake discs (ref. Fig. 5) of ARJUN MBT main brake configuration were successfully developed using liquid infiltration-carbonisation route.

Material Improvements / light weight high performance materials for weight reduction Carbon-Carbon Composite Brake discs The main brake of the ARJUN MBT at present uses sintered bronze pads produced by powder metallurgy as the friction material. Owing to the low density, use of Carbon-Carbon Composite (C-C Composite) brake discs helps in significant weight reduction. Apart from being the best candidate material for friction requirements, the C/C material also acts as a good heat sink due to its high specific heat (Cp).

Materials play a vital role in the development of any advanced defence system. The development of high strength light weight materials has led to significant opportunities for use in Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs). Advanced materials, particularly for strategic applications, together with the processes and technologies and Indigenization of technologies for Self reliance are of key importance in the growth of any industry.

Aluminium matrix composite clutch housing The static and dynamic clutch housings which are presently made of cast iron or steel, contribute to around 30% of total weight of the gearbox. In the continuing effort to provide a light weight automatic transmission, aluminium matrix composite based light weight clutch housing with adequate strength and wear resistance were developed using the stir casting set up (ref Fig. 6). The silicon carbide particles (~23 µm average size) particles used for reinforcement of the base aluminium alloy is shown in Fig. 7. The optical micrograph as depicted in Fig. 8 shows uniform distribution of particles in the matrix.

New Technology: Nanocoolants for the high specific output diesel engines Nano technology is an emerging technology with numerous applications in various fields such as aerospace, defence, automobile, energy, biotechnology etc. Nano coolants containing suspensions of nanoparticles in the base coolants due to their greatly enhanced thermal properties are proposed to meet the challenges of cooling needs of AFV engines. The finer size and hence the increased surface area of the nano particle contribute to the enhancement of heat transfer properties of nano fluid. Hence, use of nano fluids for AFV engines will enhance the performance and reduce the size of heat exchanger. Established synthesis of carbon nanotube based nano coolants for the present AFV base coolant combinations and for the stringent operating conditions. Evaluated the stability and the physio-thermal properties of the developed nanocoolants.

The process involves preparation of green composite, carbonization, densification and graphitization. The C/C brake discs were earlier believed to perform satisfactorily at higher energy and higher temperature applications and hence extremely been used for military and commercial aircraft brakes. The testing of C/C brakes at the lower energy conditions of MBT Arjun, have proved the C/C material will hold good for combat vehicle application also. A data bank including friction and wear data was generated. Weight saving of around 40% can be achieved by replacing steel / sintered brakes with C/C brakes.

Outreach Activities

Activities of Material Advantage Chapter of IIT Madras

• The ASM Chapter supports the activities of all the Materials Advantage student chapters in and around Chennai

• It encourages student members to participate in EC meetings and technical talks.

• The Material Advantage chapter of IIT Madras organized at a one day event called “A Date with Materials Science”

which featured several programs including a quiz and demonstration of the heat treatment process and its effect on micro-structure and hardness of steel.

Revival of Material Advantage Student Chapters • A delegation of ASM Chennai Chapter members consisting of Mr. N. Sampath Kumar, Dr. U. Kamachi

Mudali, Dr. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi, Mr. Fanish Tiwari, Dr. T. Sundararajan and members of the EC committee of the student chapter of IIT Madras visited Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College in Pondichery on 5th April, 2014.

• Dr. T. Sundararajan delivered a lecture on “Industrial Opportunities for Materials Engineers” and Dr. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi delivered a talk on “High Temperature Ceramics” during the programme.

• Following this there was a discussion on renewal of Material Advantage Chapter of the college

• It was informed that several student members have already registered and the process can be started for renewal.
