Welcome to the May issue of Kiwi Rider. This month sees us finally get our hands on the completely revamped 2014 Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom. This has to be one of the most anticipated new bikes

in the adventure-touring class for some years. We got to try the bike on road and gravel down in the Bay of Plenty. It’s been worth the wait. See page 38 for more.

Another highly anticipated machine is KTM’s 1290R Super Duke. The pre-launch hype said it was pretty bonkers. We’ve ridden it – and it is. Turn to page 32 for our first ride.

For those who like biking with an adventurous bent, we sent Jock off on the Yamaha Northern Safari and ‘Pesky’ tells us all about the Ruapehu Adventure Ride from its beginning to the present day. Want to go even further afield? Jolly-experienced off-roaders John Nick and Pesky show us what they take in their packs when

heading off into the boonies. On the motocross front, the 2013/14

championships are wrapped up and the new champions crowned. We’d like to doff our caps to this year’s winners and congratulate Cody Cooper (MX1 Champion), Kayne Lamont in (MX2 Champion) and Josiah Natzke (125 Champion) on their amazing rides this year. Special note must go to Natzke who made history by becoming the youngest ever national senior champion. And then there’s Lamont, who underwent surgery to remove his appendix only the day before wrapping up the title. All I can say is ‘double-hard bastard’. See page 90 for the full round up.

On the enduro front, Auckland’s Chris Birch has been showing a clean pair of heels to all-comers and extended his lead at the Riverhead Forest round. But anything can happen, so we’ll be watching the remaining three rounds with interest.
