Greetings Fellow Chamber and Friends, Saturday, April 26, the Lancaster Area Cham-ber of Commerce held our annual Gala & Auction, “An Evening of Elegance in Black and White” at the Hilton Garden Inn Duncan-ville - Dallas. The event featured live musical entertain-ment, awards, an open bar, and a silent auction. The event also offered an opportu-nity for people to socialize with regional top business leaders, community activists, and

elected officials. All proceeds from the event assists the chamber in supporting the many programs that it sponsors in the community, including economic, business, leadership development and education-related programs. Throughout the night the chamber recognized winners from the recent awards luncheon and also recognized two winners for the first annual Blueprint Awards and Chamber President’s Award. The Blueprint Award, awarded to Crescent Medical Center Lan-caster, celebrates the hospital for making a positive impact in Lancaster and the Best Southwest econ-omy through job growth, innovation and expan-sion. The Chamber President’s Award, awarded to the Continental Societies, Inc. Dallas Chapter, was presented to the organization for making a signifi-cant contribution to the city of Lancaster, the Best Southwest, and North Texas communities through the Lancaster Area Chamber of Commerce, giving tirelessly of time and resources. Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, atten-dees, and supporters the chamber was able to achieve its budget and had a great time in the proc-ess. We could not have organized a successful fund-raiser without the help of our great group of volun-teers! On behalf of the Chamber, I am sending out a big thanks to everyone who helped us organize logistics, move and unpack items, manage the fund-raising event, and pack up at the end of the day. Your help was immeasurable, and we owe you our gratitude. Sincerely, STACY E. MARSHALL Stacy E. Marshall President & CEO Lancaster Area Chamber of Commerce

Three of today’s leading business re-searchers share this sentiment. Patrick Lencioni, a best-selling author on or-ganizational health, often writes about the impact of trust, vulnerability, and collaboration as viable avenues for organizational success. Both Marcus Buckingham, New York Times best-selling author and business consultant, and Tom Rath, a researcher best known for his studies on strengths-based leadership and wellbeing, share the ideology that building on the

strengths of people will allow them to thrive and succeed in today’s competi-tive climate. Although these three lead-ers talk about multiple factors of or-ganizational success, they all have one common factor — the people. If we truly believe that people are our greatest asset, then why not take in-tentional efforts to build their capac-ity? As organizational leaders, one of our many challenges is to build systems that will remove barriers that impede the success of our organizations. Creat-ing systems to strengthen and build employee capacity is absolutely neces-sary and critical for the success of our community. Lancaster ISD has embraced this phi-losophy and has taken steps to further employee capacity by creating access to continuing education programs. In addition to offering our staff job-embedded professional development and daily opportunities to collaborate with one another, Lancaster ISD has launched a customized Master’s Incen-tive Program (MIP). Our MIP is an opportunity that we offer to current secondary math and science teachers and potentially to new hires. This program requires that the teach-

ers in these areas obtain a master’s degree in their specific content. If they currently have a master’s degree, the teacher will have to complete 18 addi-tional graduate hours in their specific content. This will allow all these teach-ers to be able to teach dual credit courses which will allow our students to graduate, from high school, already earning as many as 60 college credits. Imagine the power of graduating high school and enrolling in a college or university to continue your education and you already have 60 hours under your belt. This is what “more than a diploma” looks like in Lancaster ISD. As an incentive for program participa-tion, Lancaster ISD will pay for 75% of the teacher’s degree. In addition, each teacher will receive a $7,000 stipend. It is the expectation that this initiative will increase organizational perform-ance, the quality of instruction and organizational effectiveness in meeting the needs of our students. In Lancaster ISD, we believe that our employees are our greatest asset and we are aligning our resources and sys-tems to strengthen and build their capacity.

Employees are our greatest asset and our greatest liability A Special Message From Lancaster Independent School District By Roosevelt Nivens, Assistant Superintendent of Achievement and Organizational Management, Lancaster Independent School District

The Most Unpopular Approach To A Healthy Relationship By Jay Jackson, CPT, Take Charge Fitness Studio, Contributing Columnist

A truly healthy relationship starts with you being healthy. It is not a secret that a man’s first option will always be to find a woman who is physically attractive and presumably healthy. I can prove this in several ways, but the most obvious is that men never gather together and say, “Hey guys, let’s go down to the hospital and try to hook up with some ladies before they get the gastric bypass sur-gery.” I know you are saying, “Not every man wants a skinny woman,” and I have to agree. However, 100% of my female weight-loss clients have all expressed how their social lives greatly improved after they lost the extra inches. Good health is not about being slim, and there are plenty of unhealthy women who do not weigh more than 125 pounds. I am well aware that the inside is what mat-ters the most. So let’s look at your in-side. No, seriously, let’s look at what is inside of you. If a mythical ‘living au-topsy’ was performed on you, what would be found in your digestive sys-tem? What would the Pathologist’s re-port read? If the inside is that important, would your examination reveal that you care about your dietary intake? Or, would it reveal a horrible and damaging diet?

Would your digestive system be filled with fast food and sweets? Would you be described as one who consumes too much alcohol and too much unhealthy stuff? Would your autopsy also show the stored waste in your digestive track due to your irregularity?

I usually try to avoid this topic because it sounds disgusting, but in my line of work there is no way around it. So here it goes. If you are constantly eating foods that are high in calories and low in nutri-ents, your insides are in bad shape. Your outside may simply be a direct reflection of your

poor eating habits. Does your physical appearance increase or decrease your odds of attracting the right man for the relationship you are seeking? So, when I ask about your physical ap-pearance, I am actually not asking a superficial question. How you look on the outside is a by-product of the activ-ity occurring on the inside. A few years ago, I published a fitness article in Epitome Magazine that high-lighted best supporting Oscar winning actress, Mo’Nique. The article discussed Mo’Nique’s stand-up comedy routine which launched a verbal attack on skinny women. In the article, I suggested that Mo’Nique’s bold, overweight, on-stage character, though highly success-ful, was not sending the best message to overweight, little girls who may not have the talent to turn their unhealthy phy-sique into stardom. Moreover, there is nothing humorous about an obese child who is at risk of a heart attack or stroke. We see that when the laughter stopped, the real truth of Mo’Nique’s dissatisfac-tion with her weight became known. On May 13, 2013 Nicole Eggenberger pub-lished an article in US Weekly where Mo’Nique disclosed that her husband, Sidney Knicks, encouraged her to change her unhealthy habits. After losing 80 pounds, Mo’Nique said she felt great. Mo’Nique was quoted saying, “Let me stop being selfish and eating every-thing…..and I ate everything. I was a junk food junkie.” In case you missed it, Mo’Nique’s husband encouraged her to raise her standards, change her behav-ior, and use better judgment. In keeping with the Check Mate philosophy, Mo’Nique did not need her husband to pay her car note or any of her other bills for that matter. So what did Mo’Nique need her husband to do? She needed him to be honest and encouraging. Con-sequently, Mo’Nique and her husband benefited from the change in her values pertaining to health. The physical results are too obvious. It is no secret that good health can im-prove your relationship and your overall quality of life. Mo’Nique realized that she had a responsibility to her husband and family to be healthier, and being a bitter, obese woman was a message that she would no longer promote.

Mo’Nique’s honesty has paid dividends to her life and marriage. As for you, if you are overweight you may also be at risk of a many underlying health issues. Your excessive weight and body-fat could lead to diabetes, heart disease, or even cancer. Remember, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, right? So, your physical appearance is not un-related to your overall health. Ulti-mately, your poor diet and health is directly tied to your values. If you value your unhealthy eating habits more than improving your overall health, please pass this information to someone who can benefit from it. As a result of poor values, your poor eating habits could be interpreted as selfish and self-defeating. If you look in the mirror and see that you are a physi-cal mess on the outside, what do you really think is going on inside of your body? Not to mention, if you are over-weight and are constantly eating out at restaurants as oppose to preparing healthier meals at home, this could have a tremendously negative effect on how your potential husband perceives your values. Likewise, if your male counter-part is overweight and you do not wish to actively participate in helping him improve his diet by learning to prepare healthier meals, you become more of a detriment than a benefit to him. The inevitable events of life that include sickness, aging, and death can create stress and with stress comes the risk of further developing an unhealthy rela-tionship with food which results in un-wanted pounds and inches every time you resort to eating as a way to cope with the stress. This cycle will negatively impact your appearance which could also result in lowering your self-esteem, standards, and overall happiness. In enough time you may even begin to blame your dwindling health on your mate; or, if you are single you will even-tually use your overweight and un-healthy physical appearance as yet another excuse for why you cannot find the right relationship. Please do not underestimate the impor-tance of good physical health and ap-pearance. I am not saying that you should be healthier just so you can look and feel better. I am saying you have a

responsibility to yourself and your future mate to maintain good health. I am not suggesting that you should attempt to become a candidate for the Miss America contest, but you should at least strive to maintain a physical status that reflects good values. You may be saying, “My husband is supposed to want me for me.” I am certain that your husband would much rather you care about being healthy, just like Mo’Nique’s husband encouraged her to care more about her own health. Let’s say you do not have a weight prob-lem. What about your lips, teeth, eyes and skin? Do you expect your future husband will want to kiss discolored lips due to cigarette and or chronic mari-juana use? Do you think he wants to rub your face if it is always packed with too

much make-up? Finally, on the subject of appearance is hair weave, tattoos, and body or facial piercings. All of these can collectively detract from an accurate outward image, and if you want your mate to ever fall in love with your inner beauty, they will first need to be able to recognize you outwardly from across the room. Lancaster Police Promote Pet Adoptions By Austin James - Community Relations, City of Lancaster

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. During National Police Week, the City of Lancas-ter honors the fallen law enforcement heroes who lost their life in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. During this time, we are re-minded of the continuous commitment and dedication our officers have to this community. The Lancaster Police De-

partment is on a mission to continue to work together with members of the community to foster a safe environment and enhance the quality of life for all our citizens. In an effort to do so, they en-courage residents to adopt a pet from the Lancaster Animal Shelter. In addition to providing unconditional love, dogs can also be great companions and pro-vide additional home security. The Lancaster Police Department has partnered with the Lancaster Animal Shelter to support their efforts to in-crease Lancaster’s homeless pet adop-tion rate. Officer Walden of the Lancas-ter Police Department, who adopted three dogs of his own, would like to show his support in adopting pets by introducing one of the many wonderful pets waiting for a loving home. “Ronald”, a male Black Lab/Hound mix came to the Lancaster Animal Shelter on

April 24, 2014. He is still a puppy, but is as big as he is going to get. Ronald is full of energy and would be perfect for a family with children who would give him lots of attention, or an owner who ap-preciates the outdoors by going on long walks, camping or hunting to allow him to time to run and explore. He is very affectionate and was sure to give Officer Walden plenty of kisses when he came to visit. Ronald is a delightful young dog who is looking to love and to be loved back. If you are interested in adopting Ronald or other adoptable pets, please visit the Lancaster Animal Shelter at 690 E. Main Street, Lancaster, Texas 75134 or call 972-218-1210. All adoptable animals at the Lancaster Animal Shelter are avail-able to view on www.petfinder.com and www.lancaster-tx.com.
