Have you ever wished that we could have an online version of NCPD’s

Opening Doors, Volume II, Books A & B? Most of the content in those

two, 3 ½ inch binders full of resources, were materials gathered from

dioceses across the United States. Some original materials were created

by selected authors and NCPD staff. They have served us faithfully in

ministry since 1997 and were often referred to as a 2,500 page

encyclopedic resource for disability ministry.

Even great resources can become dated with time and new topics evolve

that were not addressed in 1997. With online resources now being the

norm, Opening Doors needs to take on a fresh delivery method and

incorporate fresh content.

Like when the call went out to leaders in disability ministry to send us

their best work for it to be shared with others, we are once again sending

out that call to you…diocesan and parish leaders. Now, instead of calling

it Opening Doors, we will incorporate the materials under two

titles: DioNet and ParishNet. This “new Opening Doors” will again be a

clearing-house of excellent resources for use by diocesan and parish

personnel which you can access through the internet.

Each month we will ask for submissions on one topic. Before the end of

that month send us a successful example that you want to share with others

as a model. If the resource is already on your website, send us a link. A

small committee will review the submissions, add the ones selected to the

DioNet or ParishNet web pages and feature them in the next E-News.

Two Requests:

1. We have several prospective topics identified but want to know

what topics are missing that you need to support

your ministry. Go to this link on our website to

see our list and add to it if you like. Also, list

your top 5 choices of topics to help us prioritize.

2. Let’s get started! May’s topic:

Diocesan and Parish Guidelines for Disability

Ministry (These could be for religious

education, celebration of the sacraments,

inclusion, etc…) Send examples to [email protected] with DioNet or

ParishNet in the subject line.

"I am very excited to announce that my newest

book, Special Children, Blessed Fathers:

Encouragement for Fathers of Children with

Special Needs (Foreword by Archbishop

Charles Chaput), is now available for pre-

order through Emmaus Road Publishing (see

link below) with a release date of June 1st this

year. This project has been a labor of love and I

am grateful for all of the wonderful contributors

who have helped make the book possible.

All of the author book royalties for

the book are being donated to the

If you know of any families with children with disabilities, consider passing this along

so they can learn about the book.

Ohio teen with Down

syndrome on

journey to serve at

Mass in 50 states By Lenora Sumsky

Kara Jackson, a 16-year-

old altar server from

Holy Family Parish in

Middletown, Ohio is on a quest to serve at Mass in all 50 states. Kara's endeavor is a

journey of faith that began in 2013. She has traveled with her family to serve at Masses in

states as far west as Nevada, as far south as Georgia and as far east as Maine. She's back in

school

now but will continue during long weekends and school vacations.

For the full article go to:

Catholic Herald, Diocese of Madison by Kevin Wondrash

Kara, from Middletown Ohio, was born with Down syndrome, but the genetic disorder does

nothing to stand in the way of her faith. For nearly two years, Kara, her

mother, and her father Rick have been working their way to each state

in the country as Kara completes her goal of serving in all 50.

New E-News Sections to Support your Ministry:

CMI & CIDD News and Notes

A new feature of the E-News starting this month is the Council on Intellectual and

Developmental Disabilities (CIDD) section and Council on Mental Illness (CMI) section

which is devoted to their specific areas of ministry. Those of you who have received a

monthly Mental Illness Network News will now find those articles and resources in the

CMI section of the NCPD E-News. The Council on Intellectual and Developmental

Disabilities will provide articles and resources related to disabilities falling under the broad

title of IDD. Be watching as these two new sections of the E-News develop and find their

niche in gathering resources which will benefit your ministries.

Call-in Prayer Service

Let’s pray together during

Mental Health

Month. Deacon Bob

Skinner from Tennessee

has put together a prayer

service that we will pray

by phone. Why on the

phone? Many of us live

in communities where

there is no group

celebration of Mental

Health Month, or there is

one that we cannot

attend. Some of us don’t

leave home very often but

want to be part of this

community of

faith. Some people want to join in to feel the support of others around the country.

Whatever your reason we hope you will join us on May 26 at 7:00-7:20 PM EDT -- all you

need is a phone.

Between 6:55-7:00pm eastern time call 1-800-791-2345 when asked for your code put in

52119# then wait for the prayer service to begin.

You can find a print version of the prayer service at this link.

The gathering by phone on May 26 will be in English, but you can find a Spanish

translation also available at this link on the left.

Please pass this along to anyone you think might be interested.

The prayer service is posted for your use in other settings; we hope you will find it useful.

If you have questions or comments please contact the NCPD Council on Mental Illness

at [email protected].

the author of this article, “What the bishops ask is that if you are going to

receive

First Communion and you’re a person with a

disability, you need to be able to understand and

do two things. You need to recognize the

difference between communion and ordinary food,

and you need to be able to receive communion reverently.”

"Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person"

This series of resources focuses on the

Theme "Safeguarding the Dignity of Every

Human Person." Those whom the

community has designated to serve as catechists will be

called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful

opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in

handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an

opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

Note: One of the resources provided is an article from
