Adult Education Adult Education - Sundays, 9:45am May 8, 15: “Understanding our Muslim Neighbors” continues with Pastor Tom in the Community Center. May 8 will feature a special guest, Dr. Hanan El Sherif, Director of the Arabic Studies department at the University of Oregon. Dr. Sherif will be presenting on Women and Islam.

May 22: Pastor Sarah will be leading this final class of the school year.

Daytimers Bible Study - Thursdays, 11am “The God We Can Know” continues through May 12.

Special Daytimers Announcement: We will now meet through the summer!

Beginning May 19, Thursday Daytimers will hold a Lectionary Study, looking at the readings for the upcoming Sunday worship. The upcoming preacher will lead the study. This will be an interesting opportunity to prepare for Sunday’s readings, to see the sermon writing process midstream, and to help shape the sermon through your engagement.

Connecting Holy Spaces: From Christ’s Table to Kitchen Table During worship on May 1, our new lay communion ministry officially began. Eleven newly commissioned Table Runners (Table Runners=trained lay people who will take the elements from the communion table to those who are homebound) received bread and wine and went out into the community to serve eleven of our faithful homebound members.

Through holy conversation and holy meals, the connection between those who worship on Sunday morning and those who pray for us from their homes will be strengthened. We pray for the Spirit to bless this new ministry and those who commune together.

There are still a number of homebound members who have yet to receive a Table Runner. If you feel called to serve in this ministry once a month, please talk to Pastor Sarah.

Parking Lot & Stewardship Updates Will anyone over five years of age miss these puddles? We don’t think so! Because of the wonderful and and amazing response from all of you, this much needed project is about to begin. Some have been waiting for this since the mid-1980’s. After the past 14 months of more intense planning and fundraising, the Church Planning Council, Capital Campaign Committee and Bethesda’s Property Board have given the “green light” to award the contract to Emerald Excavating, Inc. and with the able guidance of Svend Toftemark and Poul Olesen the date has been set. Let the digging begin!

This is not just for our current membership but we are thinking ahead for the next 50 years that Bethesda Lutheran will still be here to spread the Gospel message. There were members of this congregation, nearly 60 years ago, that made plans for us and we are paying it forward.

May 16, 2016, is the targeted starting date. Hopefully, if all goes as planned, the actual construction will take less than four weeks. During those weeks we will need to use the West Parking Lot and the grass field to the west of the picnic table area. Parking spaces will be marked so please use them and follow direction of any parking flaggers that may be present. We encourage able bodied people to please park in the grass area leaving the paved parking for those that need more solid footing. Please use the back entry.

Earlier in May: There will be some concrete work being done on the east side of the parking lot near the parsonage before the May 16th date. This will not have any effect on parking, except for the parsonage garage and the van garage.

Donations and Pledges: If you have already donated to this project THANK YOU! If you are fulfilling a pledge soon, THANK YOU! Together all things are possible and this project has proven that statement over and over again.

God Bless you and your generosity,

Capital Campaign Committee, Property Board, and Church Planning Council

Connecting To The Source Wall You may have noticed the new art on display as walk into Bethesda; you may also have noticed it’s an unfinished work of art. We need you to help bring it to completion!

This year’s ministry theme is Connecting to the Source and the artwork is a physical representation of ways our faith is lived out in our lives…and thus, ways we become more connected to Jesus.

You are invited to consider all the ways God has given you to connect to Jesus on a daily basis: through Worship, Study, Prayer, or Service; by being in Relationship/Fellowship with others or in the Giving of your Gifts/Talents. Once you participate in one of these areas, you will pick a string that is connected to the cross and using the appropriate sticker will place it on the wall. If you’d like to specifically write down how you felt connected, there is space on the sticker to do so. You might give a prayer of thanks for the opportunity God has given you or pray for the others who have placed their own sticker on the wall!

This project will continue for months, so you will have countless opportunities to take the time to be an artist of connection. Imagine the hundreds (maybe thousands) of times we connect to Jesus over time—imagine seeing that represented with all the times your brothers and sisters are connected, as well. We are so excited to begin this new project; our hope is you become more aware of the gifts of connection God has given you, and your faith rests deeper in our life-giving Source and Creator.

Remember Your StarWord Remember that Sunday in January? When I asked you all to pick up a star and on it was your very own StarWord?

I’m wondering how it’s going. Because that word was meant just for you. The Spirit worked through a small piece of paper so that you might be aware of God’s presence in your life. Ahhh….to be aware. Isn’t that the most difficult thing? To be aware. We know God’s love surrounds us; we know God’s Spirit moves; we know we meet Jesus in our neighbor. And yet, we so often forget…we forget we’re swimming in God’s grace, we forget we’re God’s beloved, we forget…

So, today, I’d like you to remember your StarWord. I’d like you to remember God placed that word in your heart for a reason. I’d like you to pray about what God wanted you to experience; I’d like you to open your soul to God’s presence, to God’s speaking, to God’s love and to see what that word still has in store for you…to see what God still has in store for you. And, I’ll do the same. And together we’ll follow (that’s my word) where this God of our’s is leading.

P.S. Please share with me your story of your StarWord! I’d love to hear it!

~ Pastor Sarah

Thank You, Pastor Bill Let us pray.

Almighty God, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to reconcile the world to yourself. We praise and bless you for those whom you send to witness in word and deed among the nations. We give thanks for Pastor Bill and Toni and the work they were called to do. We give thanks for their faithful accompaniment of those they have served, for the love they have shown to all people, and for their gifts that have glorified your name.

You watch over our going out and our coming in: bless this time of ending and beginning. You surround your people in every time and place: keep us close in your love.

You accompany your people in times of joy and times of trial: prosper all that has been done to your glory in this time together; heal and forgive all that has fallen short of your will for us. Help Pastor Bill and Toni to live with courage and gladness in the future you have given them.

As they have been a blessing to us, so now send them forth with your peace; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

I Believe in the Holy Spirit - God the Mobile Divine There’s no question most young people are closely connected to their mobile devices. This is true of many adults as well. Sometimes my leg twitches even when my phone is not in my pocket. That’s a sign of addiction.

At Confirmation, we have been thinking about many of the functions of our mobile devices:

• Connection

• Communication

• Presence

• Guidance (Google is smarter than you)

• Music, Art, and Inspirational Messages

• Apps for both Work & Play

• Alternative to Silence or Boredom

These are all good things, within healthy boundaries. But, there is a particular danger here as people of faith. There are many parallels between our mobile devices and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. For example, God the Holy Spirit…

• Connects us to God and one another

• Communicates God’s gifts into our lives and prays for us in time of need

• is God’s presence within and among us

• Guides us into faith and knowledge of God and discernment for the future

• Inspires worship, prayer and mutual encouragement

• Gifts us for service and renews us in recreation and rest

• Comforts and fills us with peace in the quiet moments

Can you sense the particular danger? If our mobile devices fulfill many of our emotional needs for presence, guidance, and connection, what about the deeper spiritual needs only the Holy Spirit can provide? If we are never alone; never quiet? If we draw more inspiration from Facebook than the Holy Book; more guidance from Pinterest than Proverbs; more connection from social media than the Sacraments?

Our Confirmation class read Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well in John 4. The water she draws quenches thirst for a time, but the water Jesus gives is an eternal wellspring sating spiritual thirst. He tells her the time is coming when you need not worship through a “landline” connected to the temple or to the Samaritan holy mountain. True worshippers will worship the Father “in Spirit and truth,” through God the Mobile Divine, the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is roaming and there are no “roaming charges.” God’s mercy and love are free gifts. We need only to unplug often enough and long enough to hear the incoming call.

Peace,Pastor Tom

Sponsor a Little Sprout When hearts are open, the Spirit can move really quickly!

A little over a month ago, WaterWorks helped Our Redeemer Lutheran Church pack Snack Packs for their local elementary school. Snack Packs are nonperishable food items given to children who are at risk of hunger to take home over the weekend. While packing, the idea developed that we could do this exact same thing for students in our own Bethel area.

Continuing through this school year, 40 packs will be delivered to children at Malabon Elementary. These packs have been fully funded by memorial funds given following the death of Larry Painter’s father. We are so very grateful that children at Malabon will not go hungry over the weekend.

The Spirit continues to move and we would like to expand the program for next year to include Malabon, Danebo, and Clear Lake Elementary Schools. There are 120 students between these three schools. To send Little Sprouts Snack Packs home with each child for the 2016-2017 school year will cost $100 per child.

This is where you come in! Please consider making a one time donation to the program. Consider sponsoring a child, giving $100 at one time or a monthly donation of $10 over the school year. You can pair with another family (or several) to sponsor a child. We will collect donations and pledges until all 120 kids are funded.

Please pray about how the Spirit might be calling you to serve children who are hungry in the Bethel community.
