Hopefully, you all have been getting the emails full of information about it from our Vice Commodore Paul Henriksen. Thanks, Paul, for being so organized. There’s a rumor going around that your humble Commodore will be in “full regalia” for the Bahamian Junkanoo theme. If you’re not sure what that is, Google it. Also, I just sent out an email to you all about a new U S Coast Guard approved electronic LED flare. I already have 12 orders from our members. We will need more to ensure the discount. Regular price is $99.99. I can get them for us for $85.00 each. Please check out the reviews on this prod- uct. They are very positive, and you will never have to buy traditional flares again. All you need to do is change the batteries. See https://siriussignal.com/press-and-reviews. Now here’s the deal...IF you get on board to purchase this new LED Electronic Flare and we reach a certain number, I will prove that rumor true by appearing at Opening Day in full Junkanoo regalia. (Yikes!) Let me know at my email: [email protected]. Then write a check for $85.00 made out to LIYC and send it to P O Box 22, Lopez Island, WA 98261. Now take a listen to this song sung by Rod Stewart, “Sailing” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOt3oQ k008 Hope to see you all at Opening Day! Lane Your Faithful Commodore

ELECTRONIC FLARE IS THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL FLARES

The SOS Distress Light is the first and only LED Visual Distress Signal Device that meets U. S. Coast Guard requirements to completely replace traditional pyrotechnic flares. Unlike traditional flares this electric flare never expires which solves the challenge of flare disposal. This floating LED marine flare can be hand-held, tethered, or hoisted aloft. It runs up to 60 hours, unlike tradi-tional flares which last minutes or less. Features and Benefits: LED flare flashes only the SOS light sequence Floats with lens up to optimize both the all-around horizontal and vertical light beams No expiration or disposal issues Family and boat safe as no flame Simple twist-on operation Visible up to 10 nautical miles Made in U.S.A. To order yours and take advantage of the group LIYC discount ($85 versus the regular price of $99, email your Trusty Commodore, Lane Langford at [email protected]. Be sure to follow up with your check paya-ble to LIYC, P O Box 22, Lopez Island, WA 98261

NEW MEMBER APPLICATIONS

Scott and Suzi Jennings have applied for LIYC membership. Scott and Suzi have been visiting Lopez Island for many years and now live here full time after moving from the Methow Valley. Both Scott and Suzi grew up around boats and water and feel naturally tied to marine environments. While much of their boating experience centers around waterskiing, kayaking, sailing and rowing (Suzi competitively), they are now looking forward to learning and exploring the waters of the Salish Sea. Edwin and Luci Termulo have also applied for membership. Edwin is a CPA and managing partner at Termulo & Assoc on Lopez Island. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, he spent many youthful days fishing and waterskiing on the waters of Loch Raven Reservoir and Chesa-peake Bay. Alt-hough most of Edwin’s boating experience has been as co-captain on his friends’ boats, he and Luci hope to purchase their first cabin cruiser this summer. Luci was raised in Hawaii. She spent a lot of her free time swimming, crabbing, fishing and boating. Moving to the Pacific Northwest has resulted in different experiences but she’s looking forward to cruising around the San Juan Islands with family and friends.

2016 SEATTLE BOAT SHOW SUCCESSFUL

The 2016 Seattle Boat Show had its best year eve in terms of unit sales, and it en-joyed a double-digit percentage increase in attendance. The 9-day event attracted visitors from 37 states as well as from Canada, Australia, Great Britain and China. Attendance was 52, 427 compared to 51,684 last year. The return of the entry-level buyer was critical, something that hadn’t been seen since before the recession.

GLOBAL RACE STOPS IN SEATTLE

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race anchored in Bell Harbor Marina in April after a 6,000-mile leg from Qingdao, China. They are taking a pit stop for maintenance and to swap out some team members before embarking on the next leg through the Panama Canal on their way to New York. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, benefitting UNICEF, is the world’s longest ocean adventure and is regarded as one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet. It spans a whopping 40,000 nautical miles and takes almost a year to complete. Twelve elite teams compete in the largest matched fleet of ocean racing yachts for the prize each year. The race is the only event of its kind for amateurs. About 40% of the crews are novices with no experience except the extensive training program provided prior to the event.
