It doesn’t seem possible, but the North Iowa Band Festival is just around the corner! The committee has planned another music-packed, fun-filled weekend of free family entertainment to honor the 79th year of this beloved North Iowa tradition. We are excited to be Downtown again this year, and the festivities will begin on Thursday evening! In the spirit of celebrating young musicians, the Mason City Middle School Band will kick off this year’s celebration on the Downtown Plaza, followed by the Mason City Municipal Band. Later, First Congregational United Church of Christ is hosting a free concert at 7:30PM featuring salsa band, Orquesta Alto Maiz.
Friday’s festivities start at 5PM with the MCHS Mohawk Danzers performing in front of the Main stage. Then the Mason City High School Orchestra shows off their musical talent on the Plaza. The country music band Thrillbillies’ opens Friday night’s Main stage music, followed by headliner Chris Hawkey. Saturday kicks off with the 79th North Iowa Band Festival Parade at 10AM. Afternoon entertainment includes the Newman Dance team in front of the Main stage, and the Mason City High School Jazz Band on the Plaza. That evening, local favorite Betty and the Gents will rock the Main stage, followed by the party band Pork Tornadoes.
In addition to the great music, this year’s festival features a carnival throughout Memorial Day Weekend, an outdoor marketplace, the Stu Nevermann Run, and much more! Visit www.nibandfest.com for up-to-date information regarding the 2017 Festival. Please contact the Mason City Area Chamber of Commerce with any questions, to pick up a Band Festival
brochure, or to purchase the 79th Band Festival t-shirts and buttons.
The North Iowa Band Festival tradition wouldn’t be possible without the financial support of our sponsors and Friends of the Festival, as well as the hard work of many volunteers. Thanks to all for the loyal support!

From the PresidentWhO CARES ABOUT MEREDITh WILLSON?
e’ve heard it said around town…”No one cares about Meredith Willson anymore.” Oh, I think people still care, but probably not that much. But maybe we should.
Meredith Willson made it big doing the thing he loved most—making music. He gave much of the credit for his success to being raised in a nurturing community…a place that encouraged big dreams. Willson is best remembered for his Broadway musical The Music Man—a masterpiece he wrote as a valentine to his hometown. However, Willson accomplished much more during his prolific career. In fact, he was the recipient of the very first Grammy Award—which is displayed for all to see at The Meredith Willson Museum inside The Music Man Square.
As we celebrate the North Iowa Band Festival this month, I hope we’ll continue to work together to make North Iowa a place to dream big dreams…and to chase them. Every time a marching band plays “76 Trombones”, every time a theatre department produces The Music Man, and every time the Beatles rendition of “Till There Was You” is played…it is a tribute to the talent of our hometown hero.
Thank you, Meredith Willson…for showing us the way. And thank you to all the musicians who will participate in the North Iowa Band Festival this year. Your participation ensures his dream lives on.

May 2017Did you know that funds to spruce up downtown businesses are
available through the Downtown Revolving Loan Fund and Corridor Revitalization Programs?
The Mason City Downtown Revitalization Loan Program provides loans of up to $30,000, matched dollar-for-dollar by the property owner, to revitalize properties downtown. If the owner maintains the improvements, and retains ownership for at least seven years,
the loan is forgivable.
Also available through Main Street Mason City is the Downtown Revolving Loan Fund, which provides very low-interest loans, up
to $25,000, to property owners within the Main Street District. Revolving loans can be used toward the dollar-for-dollar match for
the Revitalization Loan Fund. Details on both programs can be found at www.masoncity.net. Click the "Business" tab, then
"Economic Development." Both the Corridor Revitalization Loan Program and Downtown Revitalization Loan Programs are
accessible from there.
For more information, contact Colleen M. Devine, Main Street Mason City, ([email protected]), or Steven Van
Steenhuyse, Mason City Development Director ([email protected].
The North Iowa Farmers Market is back downtown, at the city parking lot, the corner of 1st Street NE and Delaware. Opening
date is Friday, May 19!

CARGILL PLANNING MASON CITY PLANT EXPANSION
CARGILL KITCHEN SOLUTIONS plans to expand its egg processing plant in Mason
City, with the help of North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation.
The company opened here as Sunny Fresh Foods with 35 employees in 2001 and has grown steadily ever since in footprint and employment. Now operating as Cargill Kitchen Solutions, this newest construction will add 11,700 square feet for a new production line and freezer expansion. The company expects to add 44 more employees, bringing the total workforce up to almost 300. The plant is located at 1750 S. Benjamin Ave.
“We’ve been working with Cargill on finding city and state opportunities for assistance on the project and also exploring workforce development with NIACC,” said Chad Schreck, President and CEO of North Iowa Corridor. “Cargill has been important to our community. We put an emphasis on existing businesses, because we want to help them grow and prosper here. In the average community, the vast majority of new jobs and investment, generally 70 to 80 percent or more, are created by existing businesses.”
Jessica Reith, Plant Manager, said, “Producing innovative, protein-rich, egg-based foods at our Mason City facility continues to create excitement in the marketplace and generate growth momentum for our customers and Cargill. Helping our customers deliver high-quality, nutritious, delicious, and affordable egg protein to consumers has led to multiple expansions since the facility opened in 2001 with three dozen employees and the desire to successfully grow the business.
“We continue to invest in our business and in the community, and the community also continues to invest in Cargill, making it a win-win situation for us all. For Cargill to prosper, we know that our customers and the communities in which we have a presence must thrive. Helping communities flourish has been part of our cultural fabric dating back to Cargill’s founding more than 150 years ago. Our goal is to continue nourishing people, animals, and the planet in a safe, responsible, and sustainable way for another 150 years.”
