SHIRLEY DOANE
SENIOR CENTER NEWSLETTER
May 2017
1412 Sixth Street E • Menomonie, WI 54751 • Phone 715.235.0954 • www.menomonieseniorcenter.org
When asked to explain to those who are not familiar with our Sen-
ior Center what our organization does, it is difficult to know where
to begin. One can begin to explain about the programs and activi-
ties we offer and how large our membership has become, but the
real truth about what happens here can not be explained as a list
or a statistic. It is better described as something much less
tangible. Our Senior Center is a venue for acceptance. Of course
we all have our differences but we accept each other without
judgement here. Amazing things happen when acceptance is add-
ed.
Equally as true, acceptance is also liberating in our personal lives.
Even when the unexpected happens we are capable of accepting
things as they are. We learn over time to redirect our lives, to find a
new way. If we can remember to develop the life we have and ac-
cept things that happen just as they are we can have a more clear
picture of what is happening in the present . Just like our Senior
Center the acceptance gives way to many amazing things and
sometimes even leaves some room for miracles.
Don’t discount acceptance for sure. It is definitely one of the “Key
Ingredients” in our lives and here at The Senior Center!

Happy May! If you have been at the center recently you will have noticed the
daffodils in full bloom. They are a sight to behold. This time of year is certainly a
time of new sights, scents, and sounds. The birds are singing, the squirrels are
chattering, and all the perennials are blooming.
Here at the Senior Center it is exactly the same, we are planning the Spaghetti Feed,
Strawberry Fest, Popcorn in the Park, Bingo in the Park, just to name a few. Every
one coming now is so glad to have the snow gone, everyone just feels so energized
and full of life.
We hope you keep coming, we look forward to seeing all of you. As you have
probably noticed, when you are not here, we DO notice.
Be Happy! Lynda

SENIOR AMERICANS DAY 2017
Communication is more than just talking and listening-it’s also about sending and receiving messages
As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey, the ability to use words
is lost and families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when
someone who has Alzheimer’s learns to decode the verbal & behavioral messages , and identify strategies
to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.
Presented by the Alzheimer's Association Greater WI Chapter
Friday May 5, 2017 10:00 am to 11:30 am Shirley Doane Senior Center,
