The SCA Spiritual WalkMrs. Donna Ambro...Sister, Mother, Teacher, Mentor, and Friend SCA lost a beloved teacher, mentor and friend on April 1, Mrs. Donna Ambro. Mrs. Ambro taught at SCA for many years and primarily taught science for the 7th and 8th grade students. “Donna was the quintessential CHRISTIAN teacher,” shared SCA Academic Dean and Elementary Principal Mrs. Kimberlee Gill. “Everyone knew they were enjoyed and loved and she will be greatly missed.” “Even when she was going through her own personal health issues, she was encouraging and positive to us when we were having a rough day,” shared freshman Kennedy Brown. “She was an amazing teacher who loved to teach about God’s creation.” “I will never forget the first time she asked me to go to her classroom to take photos of the students as they dissected a frog,” shared SCA Director of Development Sarah Coats. “She stood in front of the 7th grade students and said, ‘Oh I have

been praying and praying and feeling so blessed that today you will have the beautiful opportunity to explore something God created and designed specifically for you. We are going to be dissecting frogs and last night I could hardly sleep because I couldn’t wait for you to see how amazing God’s creations are. These frogs are just one of so many animals that He made and formed. Isn’t science so exciting?’ The students couldn’t help but get excited about what was happening in her class.” SCA will miss her enthusiasm, love of teaching, and love of the Lord and science. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. “Whether in the classroom or in her personal life, Donna filtered everything through her unconditional faith,” shared SCA science teacher Ms. Diane Ferguson. “She was the greatest example of giving all the praise and glory to God for His blessings, and yet affirming He was in control through the trials of life. Her love for the

Lord spilled out to her students, family, and friends in a way we will never forget. I will always remember her giggle that would turn in to full-blown laughter, her zest for life and all that came with it, and her genuine compassion for others.” “It is one thing to understand your own child, but when someone else truly understands them, a teacher like Mrs. Ambro, and prays with you over them in a hard time, now that is TRULY special. That was Mrs. Ambro.” shared SCA parent Bren Brown. She loved her students, she loved her job and calling as a teacher, she loved her family, but most of all she loved her Lord. Therefore, it is only fitting that her last words were to her nurse when she said, “I won’t be seeing you tonight. I have a date.”

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-6 NIV

How would you describe yourself? What would others say are the characteristics that define you? If asked, most of us would want others to see us as honest, hardworking people of integrity. This school year the elementary students have been challenged to love others with Christ’s love in a different way each month based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-6. The previously mentioned verses contain a list of several things love “does not” do. The final item

in this list is that love “does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” Believers are challenged that the excellent way to love as Christ loves with the Holy Spirit’s help is to live in the truth. Believers should not want sin reigning in their hearts. Love does not try to find ways to get away with sin, and it does not put up with injustice. As Romans 12:9 says, “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” Instead, it treasures living in truth, celebrates right behavior, and promotes virtue, honesty and integrity. Let us live in the wisdom found in Psalm 1:1-2: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”

The SCA Spiritual WalkSCA Students Serve Kansas City

A Tribute to Donna Ambro As you know, Mrs. Donna Ambro passed away on Saturday, April 1, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. Mrs. Ambro served 7½ years as an SCA teacher, one year in 6th grade and then as junior high science teacher. She loved junior high and she LOVED her students. Mrs. Ambro’s love of teaching was clearly evidenced at her funeral. Former students, both recent and from many years ago, came to pay their respects. Each of her family members told visitors from SCA how much she loved our school and her students. Mrs. Ambro continually expressed her love for the Lord, even in her last days. While her sweet smile, pleasant personality, and warm disposition are greatly missed, we take comfort in knowing that she is in the presence of the Lord she loved so dearly. And we take joy in knowing of the lasting impact she had on so many of her students over the years. Please know that you prayers, cards, emails, and words of encouragement were very much appreciated by Mrs. Ambro and her family. Linda Harrelson

Cultivating community is a core value at SCA, and one way this is accomplished is through the school’s annual service days. Each grade level has a day when they step out of classrooms and into the community to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Students spent time working at organizations such as Harvesters, Hope Network, and the Hillcrest Transitional Housing Thrift Store. Fifth grade classes worked at Harvesters sorting bread and vegetables and packaging

them in smaller portions for families to use. They also sorted sandwiches and pastries from QuikTrip for redistribution.

Fifth grade student Nevaeh Cox helped sort bread at Harvesters.

A Heart for Guatemala Elementary students donated books during the fall book fair for the Casa Bernabé Orphanage in Guatemala. GAP students made cards written in Spanish to the children at Casa Bernabé telling them, “Jesús te ama!” Mrs. Carmen Kraus

delivered the books and cards in person, prompting the children at Casa Bernabé to write cards in English to SCA students.

AcademicsSophomore Nominated for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Sophomore Lucy Knapp was selected as a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Knapp will attend the honors-only program this summer in Boston. The Congress of Future Medical Leaders is a program for students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields, whose purpose is to honor, inspire, motivate,

and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.

“Focused, bright, and determined students like Lucy Knapp are our future. She deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.” Knapp, who aspires to be a physician, was nominated by Dr. Robert Darling, the Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, to represent SCA based on her

academic achievement, leadership potential, and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.

Furry Friends Visit First Grade Students Mrs. Mankin's first grade class received some friendly furry visitors recently! First grader Sophia Ruiz volunteers with her mom for an animal-assisted therapy program at a local hospital, and dogs Calvin and Marley are part of their pet team who visit patients. The dogs got lots of hugs and love during their SCA visit!

American History Students experience challenges Faced by World Leaders Mrs. Ruth Terry’s American History class recently visited the White House Decision Center (WHDC) at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum. The WHDC is a hands-on history lab for experiential and collaborative learning, set in a recreated West Wing. Students were challenged to step into the roles of President Truman and his advisors and used formerly classified primary source documents to tackle challenges that may be faced by a world leader.

SCA Students Selected for Rotary Youth Leadership Award Academy Several SCA students have been selected to attend the Missouri Rotary Youth Leadership Award Academy (RYLA) this summer. The Academy is a 4-day, 3-night training program held at William Woods University for high school students with hearts for community service. Students were required to submit an application with essay and were interviewed by Lee’s Summit Rotarians. Missouri’s top professional educators developed a curriculum to identify and enhance the qualities of servant leadership and inspire them to live a life of “Service Above Self.” Established in 1992, Missouri’s RYLA Academy has trained and inspired more than 2,500 students in 25 years and is currently a model for RYLA academies worldwide.

Senior Sam Chinnery has advanced to finalist standing in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. This distinction places him in a group of roughly 15,000 students representing less than one percent of U.S. high

school graduating seniors. Last fall, Chinnery was notified that he was in the top 3-4% of the 1.5 million entrants and had qualified as a semifinalist, meaning that he was one of the highest scoring entrants in Missouri. Chinnery advanced to finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and other requirements including a letter of recommendation, student activities and leadership, and his own essay. “SCA is honored to have Sam selected as a National Merit Scholar Finalist,” said Secondary Principal Joe Hesman. “This is a major accomplishment and one that comes from years of hard work and perseverance. We know that God created Sam with talents and skills, and it has been amazing to see how he is using his God-given talents to perform at such a high level! We are also excited that MIT

has offered him a full-ride scholarship that he has accepted. God has great plans for him!” Approximately 7,600 finalists will be selected to receive one of three types of National Merit Scholarship awards. National Merit Scholarship winners will receive their offers by mid-June.

Junior Named Academic All-American

Junior Connor Healy has been awarded the National Speech and Debate Association’s (NSDA) prestigious Academic

All-American Award. There are over 141,000 student members of the NSDA, and fewer than 500 are named to the Academic All-American Award list. This accomplishment sets Connor among the top half of one percent of all student members of the NSDA across the country.

AthleticsCome Out and Cheer on Your Spring Athletes

by Rick McGregor, Head Coach Varsity track & field teams are enjoying a strong and successful season! Many of our young athletes have developed into key players and are contributing greatly to our success. We have already broken three school records with Rylee Lunn in the javelin, Sami Buzan in the shot put, and Kaylee Lunn in the triple jump. The girls’ team won the Adrian meet and the boys have finished second at Adrian, Bishop, and

Harrisonville. These meets have each consisted of 7-12 teams, and most from larger schools. This has been a great season, but I think we are only scratching the surface! Our athletes are just starting to break records and finish with personal records. I’m looking forward to the postseason as we make our run to the state meet! The team is also excited about the installation of an 8-lane track at the school this summer. The

team looks forward to this investment and how it shows confidence in the continued success of the program. We look forward

to remaining on campus for daily practices. Even more, we look forward to hosting meets here at SCA.

by Lance Quessenberry Spring sports are in full swing and our teams are competing very well. I would encourage all our families to get out and support SCA athletes. Spring sports can be a little frustrating as the crowds we see in fall and winter tend to dwindle a little in the spring. The school year is on the downhill slide and people are ready to shut down and relax. I completely understand… I too get a little tired at this time of year. But

as a former spring baseball coach, I know the spring teams, athletes, and coaches deserve and appreciate support just like the fall and winter teams. All of our spring teams are fun to watch and it is a chance to get outside and enjoy the great weather. Don’t let the opportunity to enjoy some time in the stands at a baseball game or soccer match pass you by. Come to the golf course and see the golf team compete. Find your way to one of the track meets and see our

outstanding track and field athletes. I promise you will have a good time and be proud of the team you see representing SCA on the field, golf course, or track. God has blessed SCA and our athletic programs… you don’t want to miss this opportunity!

SCA To Install Track in Summer 2017 In the fall of 2016, SCA announced that a donor came forward and desired to fully fund the installation of a track on the SCA campus for the state-ranked track & field team.

“Our site plan for the next phase of the school included the installation of a track,” shared Head of School Linda Harrelson. “We didn’t know if we would be able to raise the funds for the track in addition to the other items, but as I have seen over the last 20 plus years at SCA, God always provides. A donor came forward with the desire to fund the track. We are excited to install the track on our campus this summer. This will be a great addition to the outside athletic area around the soccer and football fields.”

AthleticsGinther Breaks State Soccer Career Goal Record Senior Kassi Ginther made state soccer history when she blew past the girls’ state soccer record for the most career goals. The record breaking goal came in a game against Burlington, Iowa, at the Hannibal tournament on Friday, April 14. Her third goal during that game was the

233rd goal of her high school career, marking a new record in Missouri girls’ high school soccer. “Kassi didn’t even know she was close, which was great,” shared Girls’ Soccer Coach Amber Siemsen. “We all knew and we were counting down and she didn’t even know what we

were counting down to. So it was a good time.” Since that game, Kassi has gone on to score many more goals and currently stands at 256 with eight remaining regular season games. With hopes of a run into the postseason, her final standing in the Missouri record books will be a record that should stand for years to come. The varsity girls went on to win the Hannibal Tournament with a 10-0 victory over

Macomb and a 6-0 win over last year’s Class 2 state quarterfinalist Maryville. At the end of the tournament, Kassi Ginther, Abby Nelson, Savannah Sallas, and Riley Painter were all named to the All-Tournament team.

SCA’s “Triple Threat” Qualify for KU Relays

Senior Carlie Queen, sophomore Lenetta Lee, and junior Kaylee Lunn competed at the KU Relays April 21-22.

by Christie Queen, Track & Field Assistant Coach On Friday, April 21, some of the most decorated high school athletes descended on Lawrence, Kansas, for the prestigious KU Relays. The meet only accepted the top 30-40 athletes within a 500-mile radius of KU to compete in each event. Three of these highly-skilled athletes represented Summit Christian Academy and have recently been nicknamed “SCA’s Triple Threat.” Senior Carlie Queen, a 3-time Class 2 state champion and record holder in the high jump, returned to the relays for her 4th consecutive year with a recent indoor National Championship title under her belt. She won the relays with a jump of 5’10” and tied for the meet record! Junior Kaylee Lunn triple jumped 33’9” to place 16th out of 30 jumpers and finished the 300m hurdles with a time of 49.06 to place 21st out of 45. Sophomore Lenetta Lee competed in the 100m run along with the long jump event. She finished great with a 100m time of 12.55 placing her in 7th and a long jump of 16’8.5” placing her in 14th.

Senior Kayla Kernsvaal is the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Knight Award from the Metheny Music Foundation. The $2,000 scholarship will go toward her tuition at Evangel University where she will major in Vocal Performance and English this fall.

by Gary Breshears, Head Coach After our worst performance of the year, we bounced back with our best. Showing the character of this team, the guys put in the work required to regain the form with which they started the year. Their hard work led to a second place finish in the Sacred Heart Golf Classic in Sedalia on April 17. Their second place plaque was almost a first, however, as they finished only five shots out of first place in a field of 14 teams. Freshman Alex Brown finished tied for runner-up shooting a 78. Senior Sam Huckabee finished tied for 6th while Keegan Glade finished 11th in the 74-player field. Alex Brown, Sam Huckabee, Corbin Healy, and Abram Bagunu all shot their lowest round in tournament play for the season. Hopefully, this is a true indication of where the team is as we enter the conference tournament the last week of April and district play the first week of May. I am excited by the resolve and determination in the team as we ramp up for the state playoffs.

Fourth grade students visited the Kemper Outdoor Education Center. Students rotated through four stations focusing on insects, soil/recycling, Missouri icons, and a nature scavenger hunt. The students received multiple compliments. One Kemper staff member commented on how different the SCA students were from other school groups. We are so proud of the students for planting seeds for Christ on this field trip. It is very possible that God will use their visit as one little seed to lead others to Christ.

SCA is excited to host two groups of Chinese students coming through World Class of Shenzhen, China, to our English Immersion Camp this summer, July 8-15 and July 15-22. We are also partnering with Boys and Girls of Grit International Summer Camp, which will provide a following week of Adventure Camp in the Rocky Mountains outside of Denver. “The camp is meant to help students identify their potential, learn to collaborate, fail, and try again until they achieve success in ways they never thought possible,” said Director Peter Freund (former student of Mrs. Gill). “We do all of this in an intense but healthy environment to experience true community with Chinese and American students and develop our minds and character while testing our physical abilities.” Peter was excited to learn about SCA Buddies and Cadet Language Teachers because American student leaders are an important part of the camp. SCA students are already comfortable with international students and many have worked with them as language learners and understand the cultural dynamic. These students will participate in the

adventure camp weeks and continue to give continuity in the SCA English Immersion Camp weeks. “We are providing all expenses for three girls and three boys to spend six weeks with us to build a new premier camp for Chinese students who are ready to explore, learn, and do tough stuff. We expect our student leaders to get a hands-on experience with international ministry, entrepreneurial planning and program management, and leadership training,” shared Freund. If your junior or senior high school student or college freshman may be interested in being a student leader for this 5-week camp, please contact International Program Director Kathy Tharp at [email protected]. Andrea Gillespie is the lead teacher of the English Immersion Camp and SCA Alum Michael Mayor will also be teaching and providing bilingual support. Students will enjoy hands-on, interactive academic activities at SCA and then explore real-life application as they visit iconic places in the Kansas City area. Students will stay with a welcoming host family for the week and get a glimpse of American home life and culture. They will go

to church with the host family and attend a youth group event. “We desire to show the love of Christ to these students and open their thinking to a God who desires a relationship with them,” shared International Program Director Kathy Tharp. If you would like to host two students for a week of camp, contact Camp Director Krystal Dunahee at [email protected].

Grants for tuition assistance may not exceed 50% per family and are only available for K-12 students. Tuition assistance applications should be completed as soon as possible as funds are limited. To apply, log in to your existing FACTS account. Within the text box labeled FACTS Grant & Aid, select the “Start Application” box in green. The following information is required in order for FACTS to process your application:

• SCA enrollment paperwork for students to attend SCA next year.

• FACTS application (completed online).

• Payment of the nonrefundable $30 application fee.

• Copies of the previous year’s tax forms including all supporting tax schedules.

• Copies of the previous year’s W-2 forms for both you and your spouse.

• Copies of supporting documentation for Social Security Income, Welfare, Child Support, Food Stamps, Workers’ Compensation, and TANF.

• Per SCA policy, to be considered for tuition assistance, accounts must be current or acceptable payment arrangements made on existing balances.

If you have questions or concerns about the application process, you may speak with a FACTS Customer Care Representative at 1-866-441-4637. Other questions may be directed to the finance office at 816-525-1480. Please pray that the Lord would guide and direct the Tuition Assistance Committee as they seek to meet the needs of as many families as possible.
