What’s happening at the CRC in May
Well here we are nearing on half the year gone! We have been so busy at the
HCRC with everyone settling into our new roles and we have so many new
things happening. Look out for all of our new events happening this month,
you can find all the details right here in this edition.
Thank you to our valued volunteer, Kay Buck, who has been working so
diligently to get our garden up and going again ready for the Autumn/Winter
vegies.
We would also like to give a big thank you to our regular volunteers, Naomi,
Bradley and the SSEP High School Students supervised by Melissa and Michelle
who deliver our ‘Harvey Happenings’ newsletter every month. We greatly
appreciate your ongoing support.
We are seeking “Expressions Of Interest” for more Volunteers. If you are
interested in helping out please call into the Centre and have chat with us.
On Saturday the 28th of April we held an information stall at the
Harvey Agricultural Show. It was a great day at the show and we
would like to give a big thanks to our lovely manager,
Tracey-Ann for spending her day promoting our CRC.
We now have a fabric collection box at the Centre for
Boomerang Bags! If you have any spare fabric please come
down to the Centre and drop it off for a great cause. For more
information see page 15.
We want to know your thoughts on how we can make the HCRC even better,
so if you have any suggestions for events, services or initiatives, please let us
know! Make sure you stay up-to-date by following our Facebook page! If you
are interested in receiving email updates about upcoming events and
important notices from the Harvey CRC, please contact the Centre.
The Harvey CRC wishes every mum a lovely Mother’s Day full of love and
celebrations. Enjoy the month ahead and stay tuned for further updates about

Welcome to our first (I think) gardening chat! May is one of my favourite months, I love that the weather is cooling off. Have you noticed how the days are getting shorter? We can ease up on watering now without worrying everything is going to die. The easterly wind has lessened by now.
May is the perfect time for pruning. Apart from making our garden look tidy, pruning is great for stimulating new growth and to keep shrubs from becoming ‘leggy’. I do usually leave the fruit trees until winter though.
Another great feature of autumn is all the gorgeous colour that’s around in the deciduous plants. We have a glory vine growing over the chook pen that looks, well, glorious, at this time of the year.
Now’s the time to plant trees to help them get established while the ground is still warmish, but there is the promise of rain on the way. If you’re looking at planting some bare rooted fruit trees this year, it’s time to get digging and then enrich the holes with organic matter and mulch. By the time you plant your trees out, the soil will be lovely. It’s also time to plant up your spring bulbs if you haven’t already. I’ve planted iris, ranunculus and anenomes this year and sown my Flanders poppies amongst them.
In the veggie patch, start planting out seed or seedlings ready for winter and spring harvest. I’ve sown leeks and planted garlic corms for the last few years and I love how easy they are to grow. Brussel sprouts, cauli-flower, broccoli and cabbage can all be sown now. Of course there are many others – have a look at gardenate.com for a full listing. The staff at the CRC can help you look it up if you need a hand, there’s even an app available for a small cost of just over $1. You can always pop some flowers in with your veggie patch too, like snapdragons, pansies, violas, calendula and cornflowers.
They attract pollinators and beneficial insects and look pretty too.
It’s a great idea to keep on top of the weeds at this time too, to help cut down on competition for your new plants. It’s tedious, but rewarding once it’s done! Once the weeding’s done, I like to top up the beds with mulch to keep the weeds at bay. May is a great month for taking cuttings and dividing perennials. The soil is still warm enough to move plants around too.
After all your jobs are done, it’s time to kick back with a cuppa and admire all your hard work!
Happy Gardening,
Anne Haylock

Farm Workers Available Now
Farm work in Australia is big business and Bunbury Backpackers knows all about it.
If you need work done, we can help find a worker ready and willing to help and many of the backpackers have skills that can be utilised by you.
Bunbury Backpackers do assist for free with introducing you to reliable labour, the completion of tax forms and inductions etc. saving you from the time-consuming recruitment process.
The use of backpackers as workers has become so successful in Australia that in 2016, the National Farmers’ Federation estimated that backpackers constituted about 25% of Australia’s agricultural labour force. Growers say it is much higher for seasonal harvest jobs.
We can also assist with transport to ensure that your labour demands are met reliably and will do our best to assist with labour even at short notice.
Please phone me at any time for further information.
