The Jesus Cares Ministries helps our congregations reach out to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and communities. There will be refreshments. St. Mark's is served by Pastors Jensen (WW District President), Walther, Wells and Bachus, plus some part-time semi-retired pastors. Their Lutheran elementary school operates with a staff of 15. St Mark's Church has been in Watertown for 164 years since 1854 and is located near the downtown at 215 N. 6th Street. Open Your Eyes
“Open your eyes and look!” the mother urges her little son as he nearly stumbles over the tennis shoes
he claims he can’t find. Forty days after Easter, the Christian church celebrates the festival of Ascension.
We can rightly say that an Ascension Day message for us is “Open your eyes and look!”
The disciples had seen many things with their eyes. On this occasion they were “looking intently up
into the sky.” Jesus was physically leaving them to ascend into heaven. What did they see as Jesus
ascended? They couldn’t help but notice the nail prints that were in Jesus’ hands. One last time they see
his arms raised in blessing over them, those same arms once stretched out on the cross in payment for
their sins. With necks stretched heavenward, they watched until “a cloud hid him from their sight” (Acts
1:9).
“Open your eyes and look!” What an important and wonderful reminder for present day disciples of
Jesus! Sometimes it is easy to lose focus and miss the picture – in much the same way that children (and
adults) can’t seem to find an object right before their eyes.
There is the matter of sin’s payment, for example. My sins can give me alarm. At times a foul deed
from the past gives my conscience a sharp jab in the ribs. When that happens, I need to open my eyes and
look at my ascending Savior. How I need to see him going up with those nail-pierced hands out in
blessing. Those hands remind me why he came to earth in the first place – to bleed and die in full payment
for my sins. Now as he ascends, they remind that it’s done. Sin has been paid for and heaven’s door is
braced eternally open.
There is also the matter of the world in which I have to live. I open up the morning papers and I can
almost predict the headlines. They speak of turbulent times in the Middle East, scandals, murders,
companies closing and merging and the layoffs that accompany such events. I’m almost afraid to live in
this world. My head swims when I think of raising my children in it. That’s when I need to open my eyes
and look at my ascending Savior.
Jesus is not in retirement in heaven! He is busy ruling over all things for his church (Ephesians 1:22).
The angels tell his disciples of all ages, “He will come back.”
That is all the more reason to “open my eyes and look!”
Pastor Mark Swanson
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13th
As Mother’s Day 2018 approaches it reminds us at Alpha Life Resource
Center of the importance Mothers play in the development of their
children. We minister to those expecting as well as those with children of
all ages. Some of our clients are facing difficult life situations because of
poor choices in relationships, need of a job or education, or are just in need
of basic baby/child supplies such as clothing, food, emergency diapers and
wipes. To the community we seek to make the witness in various ways that
life IS God’s creation and life IS important.
This year we are offering a special way to honor mothers, and at the same
time support the Center and its mission. This Mother’s Day we will send a
card to the special honoree acknowledging the mom and the donor. A
memoriam may also be made in memory of a mom, grandmother, sister or
that special person who “was like a mom.” In memory names will be
included in our next newsletter, Breath of Life, due out this summer.
Please make requests by May 1st.

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 17th
Also, as we look toward Father’s Day it reminds us of the importance of
leadership and guidance a father has within the family unit. At Alpha Life
Resource Center, we are a ministry that uses family, pregnancy, baby,
children, mothers and fathers as bridges to talk about the most important
thing in the world: salvation through Jesus Christ. With each contact we
have at the Alpha Center we show love to others as we have come to know
it through Christ.
Alpha Life Resource Center is offering a special way to not only honor
fathers, but also support the Center. This Father's Day we will send a card
to the special honoree acknowledging appreciation of him and, at the same
time, the donation is given in support of the Center. A memoriam may also
be made in memory of a dad, grandfather or that special person who "was
like a dad." The name of the loved one will be listed in the next issue of our
newsletter.
Please make requests by June 4th.
