A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR !

Last month I asked you, “Can we ensure that no one in Durham County grows older alone?” !!

As we try to figure out the best way to accomplish this, we DO know that good health plays a vital role in the quality of seniors’ lives, and we know the damaging effects smoking, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle can have on our lives. For example, we know the importance of seniors having at least one nutritious meal a day. We know that having a safe and stable place to call home is basic care that they should not have to worry about.!!

However, I don’t think we fully understand the effects that loneliness and isolation has on our lives? Did you know that being isolated is just as bad for your health as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, and worse than being obese? It’s true. Feeling alone and isolated puts our bodies in a chronic state of stress. !!

Did you know that 40% of Americans over the age of 40 report being lonely? Dr. Vivek Murthy, former US Surgeon General has said, “We have built stronger WiFi connections over time, but our personal connections have deteriorated.”!!

Being lonely or isolated isn’t limited to living alone. I have never met a caregiver who didn’t feel alone or isolated. We also navigate feeling alone when people we love die, when we retire, or whenever we feel as if others don’t understand what we’re going through.!!

For all these reasons and more, fostering connections among seniors and across the generations is not just a nice idea for us as Durhamites; it needs to be a strategic priority. !!

Think about it. When you feel as if others are in it with you, isn’t everything easier? Whether it’s getting to the grocery store, fixing something in your home, dealing with loss or caregiving, or sticking to your health goals; when you’re not stressed, you have more to give to others. !!

Connecting people is what we do at the DCSL. This newsletter is one way you can connect with others of similar interests and identify valuable resources for support so that no one in Durham grows older alone. Remember, we are here for YOU!!!

In the spirit of community,!

CONNECT & CREATE: GARDEN CLUB RECEIVES GRANT Risha Bailey, Advancement Director!

Recently, the Daylily Garden Club awarded the Durham Center for Senior Life a $500 grant to help revitalize the garden located towards the side and back of the building. The generosity of this local garden club has come at perfect time as we welcome a new season of April showers and May flowers! !!

The grant will enable Durham seniors to revitalize the DCSL garden and continue to add to the quality of life for garden club members. Below are a few benefits highlighted in a recent AARP article entitled, “5 Secret Health Benefits of Gardening.” They are: !

1. Exposure to Vitamin D this increases calcium levels and boots your immune system.!2.!Decreased Dementia Risk recent studies suggest that “gardening could lower the risk of

dementia by 36%.”!3.!Mood!Boosting Benefits studies show how effective gardening is on lowering stress hormone

levels, which improves participants’ mood after gardening for 30 minutes.!4.!Enjoyable Aerobic Exercise gardening works muscles and helps with strength, stamina, and

flexibility.!5.!Combatting Loneliness gardening offers alternative ways of engaging with friends and

neighbors, which can be very important in reducing social isolation after retirement. While beautifying local communities, gardening allows stimulating social interactions with others. !

HEALTH & WELLNESS: DCSL HOSTS TOP CHEF Janae Brown, Program & Volunteer Coordinator!

!

!

National Nutrition Month was in March, and DCSL has been buzzing ever since, as we continue to promote healthy living. We recently! hosted a “DCSL Top Chef,” our very first healthy cooking competition. Whole Foods generously sponsored the event, partnering with us to provide tons of fresh vegetables, herbs, fruit, chicken, salmon, and gift cards for the participants. Our four contestants fought hard in the 30 minutes allotted to create delectable and healthy cuisine. The dishes were absolutely delicious, but in the end there could only be one winner. DCSL Member Carrie Hill (second from the right), took home the crown and some fantastic prizes too. Special thanks to Williams !Sonoma for sponsoring the Grand Prize. !!

While we know that staying healthy is closely correlated with what we eat, living healthy with certain medical! conditions can be a bit more challenging. Join us every Wednesday at 1:30 PM from May 2 through June 6 to explore “Living Healthy with Chronic Conditions”. This workshop is free and will teach participants how to improve strength, manage medications, deal with pain, and much more. Each participant will receive a health guide, refreshments, and exclusive tote bag. For additional information, please contact Janae Brown at 9196888247 x124.!

LATE BLOOMERS

Muata Faruq-Farrow, DCSL Member & Volunteer !

Did you know that Dorothy Steel, a 92 yearold actress, got her big break by landing the role of a merchant tribal leader of Wakanda in the Black Panther movie? She overcame her fears, sent in an audition tape and landed the role of a lifetime! This can be YOU! As we continue our Late Bloomers class, we continue to examine the barriers that block our dreams and creativity. !!

Emotional baggage,!bad memories from the past, and the creative power of our imagination, both positive and negative are dissected and reconstructed. As we take a mature look at our experiences, we can!discard what will weigh us down and explore what will set us free. !!

Will you join us? Remember, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Dorothy started acting at 88, and look at her now! Take the opportunity now to learn and overcome barriers that may be blocking you from success! This class allows us to discover a path already forged by late bloomers who refused to be defined by chronological! age, gender or class. Come join us on this journey every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the Volunteer Room. !

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Janae Brown, Program & Volunteer Coordinator

We’ve had an eventful few months. Our volunteers were instrumental in making each event a success. Many were behindthe scenes,! while others were right out front making sure things ran smoothly. We are privileged to have such wonderful volunteers who give so much of their time, energy, and resources to sustain a center of excellence. April marked National Volunteer Month and we were eager to honor our partners in service during our annual Volunteer Recognition program. Over 40 of our hardest working volunteers were celebrated with kind words, certificates, and tokens of appreciation. !!

If you’re interested in volunteering, please see Janae Brown, Program and Volunteer Coordinator, to pick up an application or call 9196888247 ext. 124.!

CARE & SUPPORT: MEET THE NEW ADULT DAY HEALTH

DIRECTOR Judy Kinney, Executive Director !

We are excited to welcome Tiketha Collins to the DCSL team as the new !Director of our Adult Day Program. Below are a few things to help us get to know her better!!Tiketha grew up in Beaufort NC which is an eastern North Carolina town near the ocean, and she enjoys shopping at consignment storeswhether it is clothes or furniture and watching the food network.! When asked about her interest in working with seniors and leading an adult day health program, Tiketha says that she “wanted an opportunity to give back to a group of individuals who have collectively given her so much.” She continued to say that, “had it not been for all the aging adults in her life she would not have the character, morals and values that she has.” She enjoys the wisdom they have and share with others, and believes that her role is an opportunity to thank them and to provide them with quality programming that enhances their lives.! !Tiketha believes that families should consider DCSL's Adult Day Health Program for their elder loved ones because we are extension of their family. DCSL provides a safe, stimulating homelike environment with personalized holistic care for your loved one and we are always thinking of ways to support you, as a caregiver. !!

As a true North Carolinian, Tiketha enjoys Pepsi, sweet tea, dancing, music concerts, and CaroDuke her own version of supporting both UNC Chapel Hill and Duke Universities!!!
