“Crucifyhim”versus“Fatherforgivethem!”
VenerableBrothers,Iwantustore!lecton“crucifyhim”versus“Fatherforgivethem!”Cruci!ixionisanact
ofexecutionofapersonbynailingorbindingthepersontoacross;thiswasperformedbytheRomans
andothers.Theonetobecruci!iedwasstrippednaked,andthenfollowedthemostawfulmomentofall.Hewouldbelaid
uponthecrosswithhisarmsstretchedalongthecross-beams,andatthecenterofeachopenpalmthepointofahuge
ironnailwasplaced,which,bytheblowofamallet,wasdrivenhomeintothewood.Itwasunanimouslyconsideredas
themosthorribleformofdeathandpunishmentamongheathennationsinearlycenturies.ButtoaJewitwasregarded
asagreatestdisgraceandacurse(Deut.21:22-23).Thispunishmentbeganbysubjectingthesufferertoscourging.Inthe
caseofJesusChrist,however,hisscourgingwasratherbeforethesentencewaspasseduponhim(Jn.19:1).WhenPontius
Pilatedeclared:“Behold,theman!”theJewscriedoutinresponse“Crucifyhim,Crucifyhim!”(Jn.19:6).Pilatehimselfwas
surprisedtohearJewsdemandingJesus’cruci!ixion,forhestated“I!indnoguiltinhim”(Jn.19:6).Lukealsoestablished
Jesus’innocentinhisnarrativethatPilatepronouncedJesus’innocencethreetimes(23:4,14-16,22).
Normally,thecondemnedonecarrieshisowncrosstotheplaceofexecution,whichwasoutsidethecity,insome
conspicuousplacesetapartforthepurpose.Beforethenailingtothecrosstookplace,amedicatedcupofvinegarmixed
withgallandmyrrhwasgiven,forthepurposeofdeadeningthepangsofthesufferer.OurLordrefusedthiscup,thathis
sensesmightbeclear(Mat.27:34;Jn.19:29).Theaccountsgivenofthecruci!ixionofourLordareinentireagreement
withthecustomsandpracticesoftheRomansinsuchcases.Hewascruci!iedbetweentwo“malefactors”(Is.53:12;Lk.
23:32),andwaswatchedbyapartyoffoursoldiers(Jn.19:23,Mt.27:36;54),withtheircenturion.The“breakingofthe
legs”ofthemalefactorswasintendedtohastendeath,andtoputthemoutoftheirmisery(Jn.19:31);buttheunusual
rapidityofourLord'sdeath(Jn.19:33)wasduetohisprevioussufferingsandhisgreatmentalanguish.Theomissionof
thebreakingofJesus’legswastheful!ilmentofatypeofExodus(Ex.12:46).Heliterallydiedofabrokenheart,a
rupturedheart,andhencethe!lowingofbloodandwaterfromthewoundmadebythesoldier'sspear(Jn.19:34).
Onthecross,JesusChristutteredsevenmemorablesentences,namely“Father,forgivethem,theyknownotwhatthey
do”(Lk.23:34).Second,“Amen,Isaytoyou,todayyouwillbewithmeinParadise”(Lk.23:43).Three,“woman,behold,
yourson”thenhesaidtothedisciple,“beholdyourmother”(Jn.19:26-27).Four,“Eli,Eli,lemasabachtani?”(Mat.
27:46)or“Eloi,Eloi,lemasabachthani?”(Mk.15:34).Five,“Ithirst”(Jn.19:28).Six,“itis!inished”(Jn.19:30).Seven,“
Father,intoyourhandsIcommendmyspirit”(Lk.23:46).
AccordingtoLuke,the!irstwordsJesusspokeonthecrosswere“Father,forgivethem”(Lk.23:34).Thequestioniswhy
shouldJesusprayfortheforgivenessforhisenemies?MaybeJesuswantedtobemorepractical.Becausehehimselfhas
taughtustoloveourenemiesandtoprayforthosewhopersecuteus(Mt.5:44).IntheopinionofSaintAelredtheAbbot,
Jesus’prayer“Fatherforgivethem”isfullofwarmth,ofloveandofunshakableserenity.Asif,itwasnotenoughtopray
forthem;healsowantedtomakeexcusesforthem.Hecompletedtheprayer,saying“Father,forgivethem,fortheydonot
knowwhattheyaredoing.”Theyaregreatsinners;yes,buttheyhavelittleunderstandingofjudgment;therefore,Father,
forgivethem.Theyarenailingmetothecross,buttheydonotknowwhoitisthattheyarenailingtothecross.Iftheyhad
known,theywouldneverhavecruci!iedtheLordofglory.Therefore,Father,forgivethem.
Inconclusion,VenerableBrothers,letusfollowthegoodexampleofJesusasSt.PeteradmonishesusthatChristsuffered
forusandleftusanexampletofollowinhisfootsteps(1Pt.2:21-24).Jesushasmadeitabundantlyclearthatifwedonot
forgiveotherstheirsins,ourheavenlyFatherwillnotforgiveus(Mt.6:14).Doweneedtoholdgrudgesagainstthosewho
trespassagainstusandcontinuetoaskGodformercy?Letusadmitthattoerrishumanbuttoforgiveisdivineanddo
ourbesttoforgiveoneanother.Asamatteroffact,allhumanbeingshavetendencytomakemistakes.Therefore,letus
doouruppermostbesttoforgivethosewhoseektocrucifyusfornoreason,andlikeJesusChrist,wheneverwehear
crucifyhimwewillrespond,Fatherforgivethemfortheydonotknowwhattheyaredoing!

Church.Hestartedtheprayercardministryafewyearsago,whichisacardthatamembercanpickup
atthecouncil,putapersonalmessageonit,andsendthecardatnocosttothepersonorfamilythatisinneed
ofprayers.Theseprayercardshavebeenwellreceivedbythemembership.ClemaddssomefuntoBingowith
hisdresswhenhesellsinstantgames.Clemhasseveraldifferentbowties,suspenders,shirts,andlightstrings
thathewearsdependingontheholidaythatisapproaching.Clemalsoassistsatmanycouncileventssettingup
beforeandcleaningaftertheevent.Congratulations,ClemonbeingselectedastheCouncilKnightoftheMonth
forMay.

OTBs,casinos,horsetracks,andslotmachinesaregoingtorunbingooutofbusiness!Or
willthey?Ithinkifyoupresentafunevent,withentertainingbingogames,interesting
progressivegames,andfuninstantdauberandpull-tabgames,wewilldojust!ine.For
sometimewehavebeencompetingwiththeState’sLottoTicketsandthetwolotteries.
Recentlywehavealsocompetedwithprivateclubsin-housegamingmachines.Andyetwe
havecontinuedtogrowbacktowardsthelevelslastseenbeforetheStatesetupabunchof
newrulesandregulations.Wecanstillgrowandmakesigni!icantdonationstoour
parishes,Catholicschools,andawidevarietyofcommunityprogramsifweputitatthe
forefrontofourcharity-minded,well—minds.Workingbingoiswork;itcanbefun,itcan
betesty,itcanberewardingandusuallyallinthesameday.TheInstantsTicketCounters
starttheirdayabout3:00p.m.withthehallalmostalreadycompletelyset-up,andthe
BingoManagerusuallyhitstheexitaboutMidnight.Thereareabout12man-hoursof
effortputinbetweeneachsession.Wedon’tneedanyonepersontoworkfortyhoursa
week,butmorelikeeachofusworkingatleastonehouraweek.Chipin,orinalotof
cases,chipinsomemore.

Council5480was,atonetime,oneofthebest1stDegreeteamsintheStateandcertainly
thebestonthePeninsula.TimeandagehavetakenatollontheTeam.Wecanregainour
positionasthebestwithalittlebitofeffortfromsomenewBrotherKnights.Allteam
membersjoinedwithtrepidationonthetaskbeforethem.Monologuestobememorized,
movementstobelearned—whohastimeforallthat?Well,thewisemensaytoeatan
elephant,itisbesttodoitabiteatatime.Comejointheteam,takebabysteps,learnafew
ofthesimplerpositionswiththegoalofmovingintoaprimaryposition.SeetheGrand
Knight,DavidKerstetterortheDeputyGrandKnightRickSchirmtobeginthisimportant
journey.

abouttheinitiativethatbeganin2009calledtheUltrasoundInitiative.Hereportedthat
theprogramhashelpedsavehundredofthousandsoflivesandforeseesatimewhenover
