Annual energy spend of homeowners circa. €3.4 billion
Circa. 700,000 homes on oil, 570,000 on gas, remainder mostly on electricity, solid fuels
Irish homes use 7% more energy than EU average but emit 58% more CO2 due to our fuel mix

Residential energy demand and emissions
A quarter of all energy used in Ireland is
consumed directly in homes. Second
only to transport, and more than is used
by industry.
For 2017 we estimate that
• 59% was for space heating
• 20% for water heating
• 8% for lighting & appliances
• 2% for cooking.
24% of energy-related CO2 emissions in
2017 (9.7 Mt CO2)
Second largest source of CO2 emissions
after transport (which accounted for
39%), and was ahead of industry.
Energy related CO2 per dwelling

Over 300 community projects have
received over €125 million in funding
New build dwellings are 70% more
efficient than those built in 2005

• Refining methodology to reflect changes in technologies
/ energy profiles
• Expanding remit
• Quality Assurance
• Protecting the Building Owner

SEAI priorities
Moving from demonstration to mainstream:
• Alternative options for housing retrofit finance
• One-stop-shop for homeowner journey
• Targeted approaches (e.g. area-based
aggregation; public and approved housing stock)
• Minimum performance regulation
• Targeted communications - key decision points
• Skills and construction - standards, regulation
and compliance
