Coping in the Storm Fr Paul
Eight years ago I had the chance to travel to the Holy Land and one of the trips
that caught me by surprise most of all was a boat trip on a modern vessel that
had been adapted to lsquolook likersquo a traditional fishing vessel for the Sea of Galilee
Luckily for us it was a calm day and no storms were forecast
When we got to the middle of the sea they switched off the engines so that we
could take in the stillness and quiet of the scenery the very scenery that Jesus
grew up in and around and then we sang We sang lsquoDear Lord and Father of
Mankindrsquo and there wasnrsquot a dry tear on board It was a little different to this
episode in Jesusrsquo life
lsquoJesus got up rebuked the wind and said to the waves lsquoQuiet Be stillrsquo Then the wind
died down and it was completely calmrsquo (Mark 439)
What started out for the disciples as a routine trip across the Sea of Galilee
ended up with a storm threatening to overwhelm their boat Jesus was asleep in
the boat so little wonder they feared for their lives lsquoTeacher donrsquot you care if we
drownrsquo
Who would have thought two months ago that the world would be
overwhelmed by the Coronavirus pandemic and our lives turned upside down
Self-isolating and self-distancing are now part of our daily vocabulary as we live
in an uncertain world What does this story say to us in our circumstances
Firstly we read that Jesus calmed the storm lsquoHe got up rebuked the wind and
said to the waves lsquoQuiet Be stillrsquorsquo He is the Lord of the storm and holds our
circumstances in His hands We are called to trust not fear being assured that
He is with us to protect us lsquoWhy are you so afraid Do you still have no faithrsquo
Nothing is outside of His control
Secondly despite the calm the disciples were still terrified lsquoThey were terrified
and asked each other lsquoWho is this Even the wind and the waves obey Himrsquorsquo Like
us the disciples were asking why Jesus who loved them had allowed the storm
to happen Our circumstances provide us with an opportunity to understand
more deeply who Jesus is We canrsquot control Him and we donrsquot always
understand His bigger plans for us and His world We are called to overcome
fear and insecurity by living lives of peace faith and hope How contagious can
we be for Jesus in a stormy world

Worshipping by other means Fr Hugo
Since I moved here I have been struck by how Milton has a very distinct sense
of identity ndash as does Portsmouth as a whole The same is true of St Jamesrsquo
both as a regular community of worshippers and also in the sense of
attachment the wider community has for the building This is bound up with
place Our church building is soaked through with our own associations of
what has happened here to us and to our families and friends That applies as
well to hundreds even thousands who gravitate to St Jamesrsquo only at Christmas
or when they celebrate anniversaries All are part of the St Jamesrsquo family ndash and
the church building is the family home
So it is hardly surprising that we feel a real sense of loss even dislocation that
we canrsquot come into the building at the moment But we can still be a vibrant
worshipping community by other means
So since the building was closed for public worship Father Paul and I have
produced a range of material to use and a lot of stuff to watch as well The
magazine is still coming out as regularly as clockwork although many of you
now get it attached to an email We send pew sheets out every week too
together with Scripture readings and a written reflection on them
Wersquove also tried to find ways of helping you worship at home ndash and I have to
say you are a devout lot Lots of people are saying their Sunday morning
service ndash and I like to think of all those voices echoing around our parish
Similarly we sent round a daily reflection prayer and photo of one of our
Stations of the Cross in the run up to Easter and filmed a series of reflections
which are now on our Facebook and YouTube pages A lot of churches have
live streamed services We decided not to do that for now ndash although we are
going to continue filming a short reflection on the readings for Sunday readings
for your delectation and delight The Church of England website also has a
range of helpful resources
This takes a bit of getting used to ndash and wersquore very keen not to deluge you
with stuff But itrsquos good theology God is in our homes and our community
not just in our church building So we should worship him everywhere
One thing wersquod like to avoid is the example of one vicar in Plymouth who
managed to set himself on fire with a candle while broadcasting a service from
his living room But if there are things you arenrsquot getting or if you have ideas
for other things we should do get in touch

High Days and Holy Days
1st May - Philip the apostle with common sense
Is there someone in church whom you respect for their spirituality and
common sense combined Someone you feel easy about approaching to
ask questions That personrsquos patron saint should be Philip
Philip came from Bethsaida and was a disciple of Jesus from early on He
knew how to lead others to Jesus he brought Nathanael (or Bartholomew)
to Him in a calm kindly way He knew how to do some financial
forecasting at the feeding of the 5000 it was he who pointed out that
without divine help even 200 pennyworth of bread wasnrsquot going to feed
that crowd He was the one whom the Greeks approached when they
wanted to ask Jesus to show them the Father but didnrsquot quite have the
nerve to approach Jesus directly People had confidence in Philiprsquos
spirituality common sense and kindliness Such a person is a gift to any
church In art the Apostle Philip has been represented either with a cross
or with loaves of bread
10th May ndash Comgall the saint for those in education
Here is a great saint for all teachers head teachers and principals of
educational institutions and indeed anyone whose vocation is to train and
equip others For Comgall (c 516 ndash c 601) was founder and first abbot of
Bangor which became the largest monastery in Ireland And large means
LARGE ndash for including several daughter houses the total population is
reckoned to have been 3000
If you have ever run an educational institution of 3000 pupils () you will
know it takes a special kind of person to cope with that and Comgall
seems to have been perfect for the job A biographer at the time called him
lsquothe outstanding father of the monks in Ireland known for his insistence on
study and strict disciplinersquo Comgallrsquos rule had what it took to succeed It
was lsquostrict holy and constantrsquo both lsquograced with the hope of salvation and
made perfect in loversquo according to the 7th century writer Antiphoner of
Bangor Above all followers were to love Christ and reject the love of
money Comgall also had a gift for friendship for on the death of a close
friend he wrote in grief lsquoMy soul-friend has died and I am headless you
too are headless for a man without a soul-friend is a body without a headrsquo
Like heads and principals today Comgall knew a lot of important people
5
He had trained Columbanus and knew Columba whom he visited on Iona
They even preached the Gospel together in Inverness to the pagan chieftain

Praying in Strange Times Fr Hugo
These are pretty strange times Everything is disrupted not least our
worship together in church But I have been struck by how so many have
taken to worshipping at home like ducks to water using the resources the
Church has produced but also expressing for yourselves your own concerns
and intercessions Many are using this time to pause renew and deepen our
prayer life
I find it very helpful to continue with our usual pattern which is to say
Morning and Evening Prayer in the times Irsquod normally say them with Father
Paul (and anyone who would like to join us) in the St Cross Chapel Now I
say these daily offices in my study with my two very prayerful cats ndash
although they consider there are no Gods but them I also try to stop and
say the Lordrsquos Prayer and the Angelus (which we usually say at the start of
morning and evening prayer and which was printed on a previous pew sheet)
at noon as do many of you too A college friend said she thought of prayer
as joining and strengthening the circle of love ndash and I like the idea that we
are circling Milton and Eastney with our prayers and our love
During the Easter season we set aside the Angelus and instead say the Regina
Caeli (on the pew sheet for 19th April) which translates as Queen of Heaven
a reference to Mary When I came to St Jamesrsquo I found praying to Mary a
challenge But one of our pilgrims to Walsingham said to me that
Walsingham provided a space in which she could pray with Mary That
seems to me important our prayers join with the whole company of heaven
now and anticipate our final reconciliation in future So when we pray we
pray with one another and all those who have gone before
The origins of the Regina Caeli are unknown But it is associated with an
interesting legend which might resonate with us now During a procession
through the streets of Rome with a statue of Mary at the head held to pray
for the end of the plague angels were heard to sing the first three lines of
the verse we say or sing at the start ndash to which the Pope Gregory the
Great added the fourth line And so the Regina Caeli was born
6
So this verse and these words have been prayed in particular at times when
people have prayed to be delivered from a pandemic Perhaps you might
like to do the same ndash and sing and say the Regina Caeli at the beginning
middle and end of the day
Buttons Appeal Gail Stidolph
As many of you will know Father Hugo has been planning a lsquoCockney Knees
Uprsquo social event for July (hopefully wersquoll all be out and about by then) and if
not we will rearrange to a time that we can all be together again
He has lots of fantastic traditional and sparkly surprises planned not least of
which is a lsquoPearly Curatersquo costume that I have been asked to assist in
devising In order to create something truly spectacular I will require rather
a lot of white buttons so I would like you all to search your button boxes
and see if you have any old white buttons to spare Old shirt buttons would
be ideal but really anything white will be used
If you have any please put them aside for when we can meet again or pop
them through my door (64 Suffolk Road) when yoursquore on your next
permissible exercise or shopping excursion

Why Jesus walked on water
A tourist planning a trip to the Holy Land was aghast when he found it
would cost pound50 an hour to rent a boat on the Sea of Galilee Goodnessrdquo
he objected to the travel agent ldquoIn England it would not have been more
than pound20rdquo
That might be true said the travel agent but you have to take into ac-
count that the Sea of Galilee is water on which our Lord Himself walked
Well at pound50 an hour for a boat said the tourist ldquoits no wonder He
walked

2020 WHOrsquos Year of the Nurse
When the WHO (World Health Organisation) decided to make 2020 the
Year of the Nurse and Midwife they based it on the 200th anniversary of
Florence Nightingalersquos birth on 12th May 1820 But with the arrival of the
coronavirus it is a remarkably apt year to celebrate all that nurses do for us
As the ICN (International Council of Nurses) says ldquoAll around the world
nurses are working tirelessly to provide the care and attention people need
whenever and wherever they need it Nurses are central to the delivery of
health care nurses are making an invaluable contribution to the health of
people globallyrdquo
Nursing as a vocation goes back to the Early Church When plague struck the
Roman world in the third century it was Christians who tended the sick and
dying often at great personal cost Their self-sacrifice made a huge impression
on Roman society Centuries later in medieval Europe it was the monastic
orders that provided health care
Still centuries later during the Crimean War (1853-56) Florence Nightingale
saved thousands of lives when she transformed the field hospitals hugely
improving the standards of care for wounded and dying soldiers In fact
Florence Nightingale deserves the credit for establishing the modern
profession of nursing and its structures of training Although of course medical
science has advanced since her time the basic ethos of nursing care remains
today close to Nightingalersquos vision
Nursing is frequently described as a vocation and it is one to which many
Christians are called Nightingale wrote of being lsquocalledrsquo by God after having
had a vivid religious conversion as a teenager Writing in February 1837 she
stated ldquoGod has spoken to me and called me to His Servicerdquo
Four years before going to Crimea she studied at a Lutheran religious
community in Germany which trained deaconesses in medical skills nursing
and theology Many of the ideas that Nightingale adopted for her nurses came
from that religious community Thus Nightingalersquos training programme was
not solely devoted to secular medical sciences Her student nurses were
required to attend chapel and her nurses read prayers on the wards
Nightingale wrote many letters of spiritual encouragement to her students To
13
one she wrote that Christ considered it an ldquohonour to serve the poorest
and the meanesthellip He will not give His crown except to those who have
borne His crosshellip Enduring hardship is what He encourages and rewardsrdquo
The Bishop of London the Rt Revd Sarah Mullally trained and worked as a
nurse before being appointed to senior positions in the Health Service She
was Chief Nursing Officer for England between 1999 to 2004 She says ldquoI
became a Christian as a teenager and wanted to follow Christ with my whole
life Rather than having two careers I have had one vocation to follow Jesus
Christ to know Him and to make Him knownrdquo
Certainly of all the professions nursing has one of the strongest claims to
being rooted in the Gospel Christian nurses implicitly witness to Christ in
caring for others
Florence Nightingale ndash the founder of modern nursing
Florence Nightingale was born 200 years ago on 12th May 1820 Best known
as the Lady with the Lamp who saved many lives in the hospitals of the
Crimean War she was also a social reformer a statistician and the founder
of modern nursing
She was named after the Italian city of her birth but the family moved back
to England the following year and she was brought up in Derbyshire Here ndash
and elsewhere ndash she had several experiences that she believed were calls
from God to devote her life to the service of others
She never married but among her several close friends was Sidney Herbert
who became Secretary of War and helped to make her work in the Crimea
possible Some claim that she reduced the death rate in hospitals there from
42 to 2 She introduced hand-washing and other hygiene improvements
but she never claimed personal credit for reducing the death rate
Her work inspired nurses in the American Civil War and in 1883 she
became the first recipient of the Royal Red Cross In 1907 she was the first
woman to be awarded the Order of Merit She died in 1910 Her image
appeared on the reverse of pound10 banknotes issued by the Bank of England
from 1975 until 1994
It is a fitting tribute to her that the emergency hospital just opened at the
ExCel Centre in London is called the NHS Nightingale Hospital

Well at pound50 an hour for a boat said the tourist ldquoits no wonder He

It is a fitting tribute to her that the emergency hospital just opened at the
ExCel Centre in London is called the NHS Nightingale Hospital

attachment the wider community has for the building This is bound up with
place Our church building is soaked through with our own associations of
what has happened here to us and to our families and friends That applies as
well to hundreds even thousands who gravitate to St Jamesrsquo only at Christmas
or when they celebrate anniversaries All are part of the St Jamesrsquo family ndash and
the church building is the family home

Why Jesus walked on water
A tourist planning a trip to the Holy Land was aghast when he found it
would cost pound50 an hour to rent a boat on the Sea of Galilee Goodnessrdquo
he objected to the travel agent ldquoIn England it would not have been more

That might be true said the travel agent but you have to take into ac-
count that the Sea of Galilee is water on which our Lord Himself walked
Well at pound50 an hour for a boat said the tourist ldquoits no wonder He

It is a fitting tribute to her that the emergency hospital just opened at the
ExCel Centre in London is called the NHS Nightingale Hospital

one she wrote that Christ considered it an ldquohonour to serve the poorest
and the meanesthellip He will not give His crown except to those who have
borne His crosshellip Enduring hardship is what He encourages and rewardsrdquo
