A Message from Our Interim Rabbi
Dear Friends:
In Exodus 19: 16-20 we read the story of the moment
the ten commandments were revealed to our people.
In Exodus we hear that there was thunder, lightning
and flames bursting out over Mount Sinai. The people
heard a loud blast of the horn. They were so awed by
the sight they trembled as one. The people saw the
mountain quaking because God’s presence was on top
of the mountain. Then the ten utterances were given to
the people present then, and to us today.
That powerful moment, whether real or a legend,
changed the world for all times. For from that
moment, the covenant sealed with our ancestors
Abraham and Sarah moved forward to creating the
society and community we have today. The 10
commandments and the other 603 commandments
created the foundation of our Jewish community. It is
through the system of commandments that we frame
our moral code that guides us as Jews and as human
beings. For inherent in the rituals, legal codes and
stories which form our Torah, and all our writings is
the call to build a decent, noble, kind, caring and just
system of life.
We celebrate this tradition every day, but we especially
bring it to life on the Festival of Shavuot when we
remember this moment at Sinai. The Torah says that

A Message from Our Interim Rabbi Continued
when the people heard the voice of God emanating from the
mountain, they were so overcome with emotion that they told
Moses they would do all that they were told. Yet, it turns out, our
ancestors were not so obedient and soon after, they managed to
nearly reject all the commandments when they built the Golden
Calf. Fortunately for us, despite our ancestors’ failings, and our
own, Judaism is still alive and thriving today. On Shavuot we
celebrate this unbroken chain of tradition. We recall the
moment at Sinai, and we recall all the moments since when we
have been called upon to renew our commitment to continuing
our Jewish faith, despite the many obstacles we have had to
overcome personally and collectively over the millennia.
Please join us on Sunday evening, May 16th, as we share in
recalling the moment of revelation at Sinai and our confirmation
class as they renew us through their commitment to building our
Jewish future.
May Shavuot continue to inspire us to build the world envisioned
by our Torah, our prophets and sages, a world that is fair, just,
kind, and peaceful for all of God’s creation.
Chag Sameach.
