The Dominator 3 made a late-lunch pit stop at Pizza Hut

in Glasgow this past Saturday afternoon and created

quite the stir as passersby stopped by to take gawk

at this unusual vehicle. It is the third Storm ResearchVehicle (SRV) in a eet of Dominators featured in the

television documentary series “Tornado Chasers”  that

premiered on September 19, 2012 on TVNweather.

com. The program follows meteorologist Reed Timmer

and his team as they attempt to intercept tornadoes

in Tornado Alley in the United States and Canada.

They are also now featured regularly on the Discovery

Channel’s documentary reality television series “Storm

Chasers” . Using a Ford Super Duty 350 diesel pickup

truck as the base, this third armored tank-like vehicle

in the Dominator eet is bigger, stronger, and faste

and built to handle up to EF5 tornado winds over 200

mph! The shell is designed out of bulletproof shee

metal and transparent Lexan armor to protect againsying debris. The vehicle also features a roll cage and

NASCAR-style safety seats, an electric winch, hydraulic

anchoring spikes, and gull-wing doors for the driver

front and rear passengers. According to Sean Schofer

driver of the Dominator 3 and also a meteorologist, the

price tag for this Tornado Chaser was about a half a

million dollars!

 And yes, they were in northeast Montana to track

Saturday night’s storm that was expected to be a

hard-hitter.

Raymond and Muriel (Keil) Stover. He was just 18 monthsold when his mother died, and his ather died when he wasten. He was then raised by his grandparents, Jim and AliceKeil. Smokey attended Nashua schools, graduating in 1952.  Smokey began working or his uncle, Jim Keil, at age 16in heavy equipment, a job he continued virtually throughouthis lie. He worked briefly in Texas as a seismographerwhen he was 19. He entered the US Army in 1957, servingtwo years as clerk/typist in Anchorage, AK. Following hisdischarge, he returned to his work with Uncle Jim. Heheld many road construction jobs: Valley County Road

Department, sel-employed contractor, Fort Peck Corps oEngineers, and, most recently, Kirkland Ranch Estates.  Smokey married Vivian Murch July 6, 1957, Nashua,and they raised their our children there. Smokey (nicknamederived rom the comic strip, Smokey Stover) was veryactive in his community: longtime town council member,a chairman o the Nashua All-School Reunion committeesince its inception, Nashua Sleighers, and a member o OurRedeemers Lutheran Church.  A talented leather worker, Smokey was a lielongNew York Yankees an. He was also a wonderul, loving

husband, ather, andgrandpa, especially lovingto tease those grands andgreat-grands. He wasconversational and hadmany riends, who will miss

him greatly.  Smokey was precededin death by his brother Jim,and his in-laws, Dewey and Beatrice Murch, as well asnumerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Smokey is survived by his wie o nearly 59 yearsVivian; his our children, Alice (Myron) Redfield, Karyn(Tim) Ahmann, Betty Barnett (Jim Gartside), and Larry(Tanya) Stover. His grandchildren are Logan (Justine)Redfield and Cole (Emily) Redfield; Nicole (Cody) TofeChad (Jennier) Cuddigan, and Brandon Cuddigan

Tough break or the trout at Great Falls Hatchery  An unplanned electrical disruption at RainbowDam near Great Falls a week and a hal ago will resultin the loss o more than 500,000 trout rom the GiantSprings Fish Hatchery.  At about 4 a.m. on May 12, the generating unit atRainbow Dam tripped oline. The unplanned eventcaused a temporary loss o power at the dam andinterrupted NorthWestern Energy’s ability to controland monitor the water elevation in the reservoir behindthe dam. During a period o about 35 minutes, waterlevels in the reservoir increased by 18 inches (1.2 eetabove ull pool or the reservoir).  Montana Fish, Wildlie and Parks operates thehatchery and FWP sta ound out about the event aterarriving or work May 12. The river water had receded,but FWP’s measurements at the hatchery revealedthe water had risen about one inch above the boardsseparating the raceways rom the river.  Giant Springs Fish Hatchery is located upstreamand adjacent to the Rainbow Dam reservoir. With noway to conirm Missouri River water didn’t enter theraceways, FWP oicials must consider the more than450,000 rainbow and 50,000 brook trout housed inthe outside raceways inected. Most will be destroyed.About 20,000 will be put into the river immediatelyadjacent to the hatchery and 500 will go into thechildren’s ishing pond near the hatchery.  The inside raceways and tanks at the hatchery werenot inected by river water.  “This is an extremely tough decision, but we elt theonly course o action was to destroy the ish in the outsideraceways,” said Eileen Ryce, FWP Hatchery BureauChie and acting Fisheries Division Administrator. “Wetake the health o our isheries very seriously and ourtolerance or risk to the public’s resource is very low.”  The Missouri River is known to be inected withwhirling disease, a parasite that can be lethal to youngtrout. And though whirling disease is a concern, theunknown other pathogens that could be in the riverwater also made salvaging the trout problematic.

  “More important than whirling disease is the overalexposure to the river water itsel,” Ryce said. “This isa very unortunate circumstance and the decision toeuthanize these ish was not taken lightly. It aects ourhatchery sta very deeply.”  Giant Springs, like other FWP hatcheries, is on asecure water system operating only on ish-ree springwater. That ensures the water supply is ree o ishpathogens.  “We don’t raise any trout on untreated river waterbecause o the general disease concerns,” Ryce said.  Once the ish are destroyed and the racewaysemptied, they’ll be disinected and the hatchery will beback online.  FWP operates 12 hatcheries around the state and isalso the licensing authority or Montana’s private ishhatcheries. It is agency policy not to transplant ish rominected hatcheries. Agency rules also prohibit privatehatcheries that are under quarantine rom planting ishin any water body.  The trout rom Giant Springs were being raised orstocking eorts or reservoirs, lakes and ponds aroundMontana, including FWP Region 6. The planned ishstocking will continue with trout rom other statehatcheries and donations rom hatcheries operated bythe U.S. Fish and Wildlie Service.  “We’re able to spread the burden o replacing theseish around to our other hatcheries and we’re alsoortunate to have hatchery partners to help us indways to make up or this loss,” Ryce said. “We anticipatebeing able to ulill most o our stocking plans or thisyear.”  NorthWestern Energy has a longstandingpartnership with FWP and has worked closely withthe agency since the unplanned event at RainbowDam. NorthWestern has agreed to share in the costo disposing o the ish and the subsequent hatcheryclean-up. The company will also work with FWP on thedevelopment o protective reservoir-level monitoringsystem or the hatchery.

  NorthWestern is taking steps to improve the powereed system to Rainbow Dam. The company will developa redundant reservoir-elevation monitoring system and

establish a plan to provide early notiication o uturepotential changes in water levels in the reservoir thatcould aect hatchery operations.  Rainbow Dam and its other Montana hydroelectricacilities operate under a Federal Energy RegulatoryCommission (FERC) license and NorthWestern hasnotiied FERC o the event. Along with the notiication,NorthWestern outlined to FERC the corrective actionsit will take to prevent reoccurrence.  FWP’s Giant Springs Fish Hatchery raises ourgenetic strains o rainbow trout, along with brook trout.

These rainbow trout strains include Arlee, Eagle Lake,Arlee/Erwin, and Gerard.  The hatchery is ed by water rom Giant Springs,which is one o the largest natural springs in thecountry, producing about 150 million gallons o watereach day. Like all FWP trout hatcheries, Giant Springsis on a secure water system, meaning it uses water onlyrom Giant Springs in order to avoid disease.  FWP operates 12 ish hatcheries around thestate. The hatchery system produces about 45 millionwarmwater and 8.4 million coldwater ish annually.
