Do you have a favorite feast day? Christmas, Easter, Pentecost? Think about it for a moment. What is it your favorite? What is it about that day that stands out for you? The birth of Jesus? (Jesus takes on our flesh…incarnation…he is like us in all things but sin.) His resurrection? (Divinization…we take on the divine when we rise from the dead.) The gift of the Holy Spirit? (We are empow-ered to proclaim Jesus.) Mine hap-pens to be today’s celebration of the Ascension. Why you might ask? Seems a bit odd. Because I think of this day as being the key transitional feast for the Church. How is that? To-day the disciples are commissioned…and so are we. This is Jesus’ last set of explicit directions. Today Jesus hands the mission over to his disciples…and to us. He wants us to take responsibility for what he started with the original twelve. He ascends into the heavens, but promises to be with us always, until the end of the age. He gives the disciples and us the responsi-bility to carry on what He started. So each year we read a different synoptic Gospel…this year Mat-thew has Jesus say to the disciples (and to us): “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the na-tions…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Each year this day we are re-minded of the commission. It did not end with the eleven disciples. (They had to pick a replacement to round out the original number to twelve.) It is addressed to the whole church for all time. We are all disciples; we are all commissioned and gifted through our Baptism and Confirmation. We are in effect all evangelizers. This is a responsibility…and obligation.

So the process begins: commissioned at the Ascension, infused with the spirit at Pentecost, and then with the Sundays of Ordinary time we are on mission. We are on “The Way” with Jesus and the disciples. We hear and read the synoptic gospels attending as it were Jesus’ School of Empow-erment. We learn about being disciples by watching, listening to Jesus, and then doing what Jesus did. When we are dismissed from Mass, “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord” we are sent to act as disciples proclaiming the Gospel, the Good News, which is Jesus himself, his gift of salvation, and most especially the new life we have in his and our own Resurrection. That is why the Ascen-sion is so important to me. Dcn Peery Duderstadt

Reopening Plan for ST. NORBERT AND OUR LADY OF THE BROOK amid COVID-19

Hello St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Parish family, I pray that you and your loved ones are healthy. As you may have seen, Cardinal Cupich re-cently shared our multi-phased plan for reopen-ing churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Specifically,

Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Baptism, Reconciliation, Weddings and Fu-nerals with a limit of 10 attendees. Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adoration with a limit of 10 attendees. Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups de-pending on the guidelines from the state and the capacity of the church building. The Archdiocese has stipulated that par-ishes with more than one worship site must select a single site to open for Phase I and Phase II.

Our St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Reopening Plan First and foremost, it is important for everyone to understand that our efforts will prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all while maintaining due respect and reverence for the sacraments and liturgical norms of our faith. I have assembled a Parish Reopening Leader-ship Team with parishioner co-captains to lead our efforts. We have already begun attending required training from the Archdiocese to ensure that our parish reopening plan conforms to the guidelines developed by the Archdiocese in col-laboration with civil and healthcare authorities. Volunteers Needed We will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. Impor-tantly, leadership team members and volunteers must not be part of a “vulnerable popula-tion” (that is, not over the age of 65; no under-

lying medical condition such as diabetes; lung disease; undergoing cancer treatment, etc.). I ask you who are younger than 65 and healthy with no underlying health conditions to consider assisting with one of three reopening teams:

Set-up team. Sample duties include ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental cele-bration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, etc.

Greeting team. Sample duties include assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they en-ter the church, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas, etc.

Cleaning team. Sample duties include maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if you do not have your own, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

The Reopening Leadership Team and I will make sure that all volunteers and properly trained. Please send a message to [email protected] to indicate your willingness and ability to volunteer. From those that step forward, we will also request that some act as volunteer captains to help lead each of the three teams. Timing and Place for Our Reopening

As I mentioned, the Parish Reopening Leadership Team members and I have completed required training which took place the week of May 17. We are now reviewing and completing tasks as-signed to all parishes as part of a reopening certification process to be approved by the Archdio-cese. We were required to choose a single site in which to reopen and after much prayer and con-sideration of all that is involved have decided to begin with St. Norbert church. Our aim is to open this week (again for a maximum of 10 people at a time) for private prayer on Wednesday, May 27 from 5 pm to 6 pm and again on Friday, May 29 from Noon to 1 pm, as well as to begin scheduling funerals, baptisms and weddings. Our plan is to also be available for Reconciliation on Saturday, May 30 from Noon to 2 pm. The guidelines and measures required to reopen are designed to protect our wellbeing and that of the of our broader community. As Cardinal Cupich has noted, from the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper.” Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed, “that they all may be one” (Jn 17:21) and commanded us “love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (Jn 13:34). Our collective patience, willingness to help and the care we take to reopen is a demonstration of our unity and love for one another. May God grant you His peace during this difficult time and may He manifest His love and presence to you in abundant ways. If you have any questions, please contact us at parishoffice@ northbrook-catholic.church. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Chris Gustafson (The information on page 7 shows the degree of detail that the Arch is providing for Private Prayer. There are equally detailed instructions for each type of service. ) Further documentation is available at the Archdiocesan website: https://www.archchicago.org/coronavirus/reopening-training

Archdiocese of Chicago Church Opening for Private Prayer and Devotion

These guidelines for private prayer and devotion in Church reflect updated guidance by government officials, healthcare professionals and Church. These guidelines are based on current requirements for numbers of 10 or less in the church at any time, this is exclusive of all ministers and either an usher or greeter. Parishes should adapt only as necessary however being careful not to violate social distancing, face covering and sanitiz-ing practices. Parishes or pastors may not alter number of allowed worshippers, social distancing, face covering, or sanitizing guide-lines contained here. Preparation 1. Determine the schedule for opening the church for private prayer. Remember the church may not be left unattended during this time. To maintain appropriate health and safety precautions, there must be a “greeter” or usher on duty at all times. 2. When announcing to the parish a time for private prayer and devotion in the church, the following should be clearly stated to the faithful to set expectations:

a. The exact times the church will be open for prayer. b. No more than 10 worshippers will be allowed into the church at any given time. c. If other parishioners are waiting, worshippers should limit their prayer time to 20 minutes. After wait-ing 20 minutes, a greeter may respectfully remind them that others are waiting and ask them to exit. d. Worshippers should bring their own masks or cloth facial coverings which will need to be worn throughout their time in adoration. This requirement is not enforced for those with difficulty breathing through a facial covering. However, these individuals will be seated at a much greater distance from oth-ers. e. Worshippers may not sit together unless they are domiciled together. f. A Greeter will guide worshippers to seating that will be clearly marked. g. Once seated, worshippers are asked not to change seats or move around the church.

Time of Private Prayer 1. The total number of worshipers allowed in the church is not to exceed 10. 2. Private prayer should take place in the main church and not a side chapel because of social distancing and spacing re-quirements. 3. Pews / chairs should be visibly marked as to where participants can sit, maintaining social distance of at least 6 feet. Staggered seating is best. Keep in mind that 6 ft must be maintained in front, back and on either side of worshipper. Family units who are domiciled together may sit together OR the parish may designate certain pews as “family pews.” 4. A greeter is to meet participants in the narthex or vestibule and be on duty for the entire time the church is open for prayer. The Greeter’s duties include:

• Ensure that every participant is wearing a protective face mask • Ensure that every participant sanitizes his/her hands before entering the church • Remind worshippers that if they are ill or have a temperature they should not enter. • Ensure that each participant knows that once he/she takes a seat they are to remain in that seat for the time they are in the church • Ensure that those who are waiting in line maintain proper social distance • As one worshipper leaves the church the greeter will allow another person in. However, a different seating area should be used, or the Greeter should wipe down the seating area before reused. The Greeter should wear gloves if they are wiping down seating and sanitizing their hands afterwards.

5. The greeter should give worshippers a five-minute warning before the church will close for the day. Cleaning 1. After the time of private prayer, any area of the church used for seating must be wiped down and sanitized as well as collecting any paper materials left behind. 2. The individual cleaning must wear mask and gloves. 3. Greeter should replenish supplies as needed.

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595) May 26

In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent Eng-lish and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal por-trait, when pressed, activated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disap-proval. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very som-ber order who’ve left the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps de-fending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gen-tle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recreation and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin improving Church and world by changing ourselves with unfail-ing joy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sharing Ministry The local wildlife has again found its way into some of the donations in the boxes at the St. Nor-bert doors. They are fond of cereals, crackers, pea-nut butter (they can chew right through the lids!), popcorn, etc. Martha and

Gary Pet have come to the rescue with an orange metal bin. You will see the bin right near the doors where the boxes have been, and the boxes will re-main in place for a while until people are familiar with the new arrangement. There have been frequent changes in procedures as we adapt to changing cir-cumstances, but this effort is helping to meet a grow-ing need among those most damaged by the pan-demic and the economic fallout. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink—Matthew 25:35 If not us, who?

If not now, when?

While social distancing is best practice, home is not a safe place for victims of domestic violence. Tensions about reduced work hours, closings and illness can make any-one feel powerless. Abusers have increased access to victims as survivors can no longer go to work or visit friends. Victims might fear obtaining medical treatment or seeking refuge with elderly parents. Although it is hard to predict the lasting impact of this epidemic, it is clear that WINGS services to our commu-nity are critically needed now. In these uncertain times, we are so grateful for your support and understanding. We are so grateful for partners like Our Lady of the Brook/St. Norbert.”
