John Mellencamp, Amy Grant, Justin Bieber – those are a few of the artists you can fi nd on Campbell River’s newest radio station but the genre of music might surprise you after reading those names.

CHVI, plays rock, dance and soothing ballads but it’s all Christian music and it’s the only one of its kind on the West Coast.

The station, which goes by the tag name Spirit 88.7 FM, is a contemporary Christian music radio station that features the likes of rock band Switchfoot, Steve Bell and Ray Boltz.

“We’ve got the elderly, middle aged, teenagers and young adults listening and everyone has different tastes,” says Trever Wickens, music director. “We can’t just be one of those stations, we have to play it all. We can’t just be a certain genre, we have to play everything.”

The station is run by Terry Somerville, former pastor of Four Square Church, and owned by Total

Change Ministries, a local registered charity that takes on mission projects not only here but all over the world.

The radio station, which is non-profi t, and does not run on-air advertising, was born mostly out of opportunity.

When the owner of a Christian radio station in Lethbridge retired and decided to sell all of his equipment, Somerville jumped at the chance.

“It was just an opportunity that I think God brought to

us,” said Somerville. “It would have taken a lot more money and time to start from scratch.”

Right now, the small operation is run solely by Somerville and Wickens, who both volunteer their time to have the station on the air. They hope to increase their budget through donations and eventually hire a couple of employees.

They would also like to be able to afford to bring in talent. The station studio, which is set up in the old CD

Plus store in Campbell River Common mall, has enough space to accommodate live talent and up to 50 spectators in the back room.

Since going live on the air in April and passing the test phase two weeks ago, a couple of live bands have already performed in studio and been broadcast over the air waves.

“There are a lot of excellent musicians in Campbell River that don’t get a chance,” says Somerville.

“They’re fantastic songwriters and we want to give them a way through and help them to get some exposure.”

Spirit 88.7, which is on the air 24 hours a day, also has some

talk segments such as the morning show which runs from 6 a.m. to noon on weekdays. Every 15 minutes, Somerville says he will break in and do a weather report and deliver some good news stories. Wickens does his own show from 3-6 p.m. He says right now it’s basically a “how-to” session and he explains how listeners can get ahold of him and Somerville, how they can request music, how they can fi nd their website and

how to listen to live-stream radio online.

Somerville says so far the radio station, which is all about “our heart for God,” is a success.

“People are liking the music,” says Somerville. “I’m constantly getting comments from people that say ‘I’ve never listened to the radio before but now I have it on all the time,’ which is really neat.”

“World, I give you

G.P. Vanier Lip Dub 2011.”

With those words, Tim Krutzmann, the

leadership teacher at Vanier Secondary in Courtenay premiered the school’s lip dub video during a school assembly last Wednesday morning.

After watching the video, the gymnasium full of students and staff counted down from 10 to one and erupted in cheers as the video was uploaded to YouTube.

The school’s student leadership class spent months organizing the We Are Vanier lip dub, a video that combines lip-synching and audio dubbing.

More than 400 students and 50 staff members turned up on a Saturday morning for the main video shoot.

“The passion, energy and heart that these members of our family displayed that day are a perfect snapshot of our school,” said Krutzmann.

The video begins

with 17-year-old Ian Chen falling asleep in Krutzmann’s social studies class.

In his dream, the school comes together to show its spirit, dancing, cheering and

doing various activities in the hallways while singing along to the song Ordinary Day by Great Big Sea.

we wanted for this song were that the song had to be by a Canadian band, it had to be upbeat, and it had to have a positive message,” said Krutzmann. “This is a song about never giving up, and we here at Vanier are the embodiment of that message.”

Chen, who likes being in the public, thought the fi lming was a very good experience.

“A lot of friends say ‘Wow, this is awesome,’ and I can’t wait to show the video to my friends in Taiwan,” he said. “I feel very proud to represent this school, and I think

it’s very nice to be in the video. It’s a really amazing video.”

Krutzmann showed a lip dub from a university in Spain several months ago during a school assembly, and that inspired the leadership students to do their own lip dub.

As far as Krutzmann knows, there are not many schools on Vancouver Island that have done a lip

dub. Valley View Elementary School did a lip dub to Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never earlier this spring, but Vanier is the fi rst high school in the Comox Valley to do one. Brooklyn Elementary in Comox was also fi lming a lip dub last week.

that this school is special and that this project was one way that we could show the whole world how truly unique our school is,” said Krutzmann. “This video is your video; it is our legacy.”

Eleventh-grader Tessa Reynen and

12th-grader Vanessa Navarro-Merrick are in the leadership program and were very involved in the lip dub.

“It’s to bring everyone together and show we like the school,” said Reynen.

“It’s a great memory,” added Navarro-Merrick. “It would be a moving

picture yearbook.”The leadership

students have been working on the lip dub since October.

Reynen and Navarro-Merrick are both very proud of the fi nal product, and they say it exceeded their expectations.

“I defi nitely think it’s a good piece of work,” said Navarro-Merrick. “It showed our school spirit; it showed what our school does and how we function.”

After watching the fi lm during the assembly, eleventh-

grader Sarah Stevens thought it was awesome.

“I think it says we as a school have a sense of togetherness and a lot of pride in ourselves, a sense of family that school is a place you can go to and be OK,” she said.

Rylee Latrace, who is also in Grade 11, was also impressed.

“I think it’s nice we as a school could come together and do that,” she said. “We’re all really proud.”

The girls were part of the huge crowd cheering in the gym at

the beginning of the fi lm, and they both chose this scene as their favourite part of the fi lm.

“It really showed you how a school can come together,” said Stevens.

Before unveiling the fi lm, Krutzmann thanked the school administration for being so supportive, Video for Heyer Productions and Quality Foods .
