PARISH NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS

Undivided unity.

A central doctrine of our Catholic faith.

It’s one of the first lessons we learn as little children when our parents teach us to bless ourselves. As we grow in size and faith, we call upon and praise the Blessed Trinity at the beginning and end of our prayers several times each day.

We soon learn that every official prayer of the Church, particularly the Holy Mass and sacraments, begins and ends with an address to the Holy Trinity. We are baptized, absolved of our sins, and anointed when we are ill or dying in the name of this same Trinity.

The Trinity is all around us, part of our lives from the womb to the tomb and beyond, and yet, the Trinity is still a mystery to us. And, because our human nature seems to love a good mystery, we’ve been trying hard to figure this one out for some 2,000 years.

Have you ever been out by Congers Lake on a late winter morning when the air is just starting to warm up? There are still some patches of ice on the water, and often you see a misty fog hanging over the entire lake.

Water, ice and fog. Three expressions of the same one entity. Just like the Trinity.

Good answer? More like St. Patrick’s example of the shamrock. It’s just about the best answer a human being can give.

In the name of the

FATHER and of the

SON and of the

HOLY SPIRIT

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY

Our limited human minds can’t really comprehend the immensity of God, but that’s OK. St. Augustine, who spent a lot of time wrestling with this doctrine, came up with what just might be the most satisfying explanation of the Trinity. Augustine said: “You see the Trinity if you see love.”

Augustine tells us that the Father is the lover. Jesus, the Son, is the loved One. The Holy Spirit is the personification of the very act of loving.

This means we can understand something of the mystery of the Holy Trinity more readily with our hearts than with our feeble minds. When it comes to the Trinity, the bottom line, all we need to know, is rather quite simple.

It’s all about love. “God so loved the world that He sent His only Son.” That sort of love.

Like Augustine and all the great minds of the Church, we may not be able to understand the how of the Trinity, but we can understand the why. The why is love.

God doesn’t exist as a solitary individual cut off from His creation.

This Iwo Jima mountain top in Japan was still a World War II

battle zone when this photo was taken, and the enemy may

have been waiting nearby. Yet at this moment, these battle-

weary soldiers appear to be solely and intensely focused on

the Eucharist. And here God came to these servicemen, who

so desired and needed Him, as they faced the violence of war

that is such a contradiction of His love. Who knows how many

of these men survived. But as Jesus, through his Passion,

rose and triumphed over death, we pray that all who made the

ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country will be united with

Him in Heaven. And may the souls of all departed veterans,

who served to protect our security and freedom, rest in peace.

MEMORIAL DAY Let Us Remember Those Who Have Served

God is not a loner. Every one of us is made in God’s image.

God is alive in all of us, but the best way to really find our God, to know Him intimately, is to reach out and see Him and experience Him in each other.

We are all created in love, lovingly crafted by the hand of God Him-self to be a community of loving persons just as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are bound together in love. By virtue of our Baptism, we belong to the Trinity and that relationship makes us special. The Trinity envelopes us in love, a remarkable, unending, unconditional love that not only defines who we are, but gives us life and sustains us for all eternity.

We don’t need to be a Doctor of the Church or have a degree in theology to understand that.

So, please, think about that every time you make the sign of the cross. Don’t waive your hands in front of you like you’re shooing away a mosquito. Do it slowly and deliberately, realizing that by that simple gesture, you are honoring and celebrating an incredible mystery of love.

~ Deacon Mark Czerwinski

ST. ANTHONY’S BREAD

The devotion to Saint Anthony known as Saint Anthony’s bread goes back to the 13th century. It has been a source of many favors and graces and has also been of great aid to the poor and the needy.

According to most ancient chronicles, in the city of Padua, when the great basilica was being built, a child fell into a barrel of water and drowned. In her grief the mother called on St. Anthony and promised she would donate her daughter’s weight in grain for the poor if the child were restored to life.

While the mother was still praying, the child arose as if waking up from sleep. This miracle gave rise to the pious practice of giving alms to the poor as a petition

or in return for favors received through St. Anthony’s intercession.

The practice received its present name from a favor received by a pious girl named Louise Bouffier at Toulon in France in the last century. She promised loaves of bread for the poor in exchange for St. Anthony’s help. Her shop later became a center of devotion to the saint.

The Franciscan order encourages this act of charity to the afflicted and those in want every-where. It is a laudable method of sacrifice and of thanksgiving to St. Anthony.

Should you wish to take part in this traditional of prayer to St. Anthony here in our parish, please make an offering to our parish food cupboards. Place your offering in an envelope marked plainly “St. Anthony’s Bread,” and place it in the collection basket at mass.

Any offering, however small, that you care to make in honor of St. Anthony will be used to provide food for those who come to our food cupboards.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity Becomes a ‘House of God’

One of our most recent saints, St. Elizabeth of the Trinity was canonized in 2016. She grew up in France in the late 1800s, the daughter of a successful military officer who died of a heart attack while she was still only a girl.

She was an extremely strong-willed and temperamental child. Her frequent fits of rage were almost uncontrollable, and she was known as the "little devil."

This began to change after her First Communion, when she was 11. That afternoon she met for the first time the prioress of the nearby Carmelite convent. The nun explained that the girl's name, Elizabeth, meant "house of God," and wrote her a note that said: "Your blessed name hides a mystery, accomplished on this great day. Child, your heart is the House of God on earth, of the God of love."

From then on, recognizing that God had taken up residence in her soul, she waged a holy war against her violent temper. She didn't win overnight, but she did win, eventually, and she also discovered her vocation to become a Carmelite nun herself.

Her mother didn't like the idea, however, and made her wait until she was twenty-one. Elizabeth won friends of all ages during these years of waiting, catechizing troubled children, singing in the parish choir, arranging parish day-care service for families who worked in the local tobacco factory, and also winning several prizes for her skill at the piano.

She died only five years after entering the convent, at the age of 26, after having suffered horribly for months from the last stages of Addison’s disease, an adrenal gland disorder, which was incurable at the time.

But her realization that the Blessed Trinity dwelt within her enabled her to suffer with patience and even with joy.

As she wrote to her mother:

"The bride belongs to the bridegroom, and mine has taken me. [Jesus] wants me to be another humanity for Him in which He can still suffer for the glory of his Father, to help the needs of his Church: this thought has done me so much good."

Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity had discovered the intimate, loving presence of God that He so eagerly wants to reveal to all of us.

Her feast day is November 8.

“We must be mindful of

how God is in us in the

most intimate way and

go about everything with

Him. Then life is never

banal. Even in ordinary

tasks, because you do not

live for these things, you

will go beyond them.”

~St. Elizabeth of the Trinity
