President’s Message Dear NVMTA Members,

It has been a joy to serve as your president for the last two years. I have had the great privilege of working with so many during the two years, and I continue to be astounded at how many hours of hard work dedicated NVMTA members contribute to our organization.

I’m particularly grateful to so many of you for your heartfelt contributions to our discussion at the April meet-ing concerning the dual role that NVMTA plays in being a chapter that belongs to both the National Federa-tion of Music Clubs and the Music Teachers National Association. It is clear that our members find them-selves attracted to the programs that both of these large umbrella organizations offer to us.

We will continue to be affiliated with both of these organizations.

In looking to the future, a huge welcome goes to Jim Litzelman. I’m delighted that Jim will be taking over as President of NVMTA at the May meeting. He has been a friend and colleague of mine for several years and I know his energy, enthusiasm and skills place us in exceptionally capable hands for the next two years.

Goodbye from me, NVMTA and welcome to Jim.

Julie Slingerland

NEW STANDING RULES ADOPTED THIS SPRING

At the March and April meetings the following motions were ap-proved to be placed in the NVMTA Standing Rules:

#1 Any teacher who fails to appear on the day of an event to carry out assigned duties and who has not provided a substitute approved by the chairman, will pay NVMTA a fine of $100 for each three hour session (or fraction thereof), to be used as re-imbursement for the substitute. The following is specifically clarified: Should a teacher have a four to six hour required work time, the fine would be $200. If the teacher has a seven to nine hour required work time, the fine would be $300, and so on. All results of the entered students (of the member who fails to ap-pear on the day of the event to carry out assigned duties and who has not provided a substitute approved by the chairman), will be withheld until the fee is paid to NVMTA along with a writ-ten request from the member for the student(s) results.

#2 In NVMTA events, “chamber music” is defined as a group consisting entirely of student musicians.

#3 Participants in NVMTA events must be studying with the en-tering teacher as their principal teacher of the instrument played. The exception to this is in chamber music events. The entering (principal) teacher must be an active member of NVMTA as of the event entry deadline. Some events require that the student be studying with the principal teacher for six months prior to the entry deadline. For this information, refer to Event Descriptions on the NVMTA web site.

#4 In a situation in which a teacher provides a substitute for him/herself, and that person is not a member of NVMTA and/or does not teach the instrument being judged, approval of this substi-tute must be obtained from the event chairman. If the teacher provides a substitute for him/herself who teaches the instrument being judged, and is a member of NVMTA, then the substitute is automatically approved.”

Judged Recitals Report Nancy Breth, Victoria Wyatt and Carol Ann Barry, Co-Chairs

NVMTA's final set of judged recitals will be held on May 9 at Arlington Womens Club. Performers in the 2:00 and 3:15 recitals will receive critiques from judges; but since these recitals are designated non-competitive, no honorees will be named. This format, also followed in January, was adopted this year to serve students who want a place to play and receive serious feedback without entering a competition. The other 6 recital dates each contained three one-hour recit-als from which students were selected for the Honors Recitals. Forty-five teachers sent 190 students to our judged recitals this year. The May 9 Honors Recital (4:30 pm) will feature the following students, chosen from recitals in February, March and April:

Katie Bode (Lisa Emenheiser Sarratt) Miyabi Saito (Rosita Mang) Gloria Chen (Valentina Bransburg) Eileen Zheng (Silva Blazquez) Benjamin Escobar (Darya Gabay) Daniel Park (Dominique Shim) Ellen Howerton (Helen Fall) Isabel Ho (Margarita Gramaticova) Elizabeth Li and duo team Jennifer Peng/Caitlin Kim (Victoria Wyatt) Juncheng Shen, Muli Yu, Bryan Ho, Risa Kaneko and Lyric Yu (Marjorie Lee) Maggie Chen, Niki Hua, Virginia Sun, Jennifer Su and duo team Valerie Zetts/Niki Hua (Nancy Breth)

We also applaud the following teachers and their students, who were awarded Honorable Mention: Timmy Chan (Wyatt) Jessica Shen (James Litzelman) Lucy Chu (Breth) Charlotte Cai (Blazquez) Esther Kim (Shim) June Kim (Hae Won Moon) Leo Sainati (Maribeth Frank) Maria Brock (Anna Ouspenskaya) Ryo Kaneko, Elizabeth Hu, Juncheng Shen and Ian Cabacungan (Lee) Henry Fong, Alison Li and Sarah Barham (Mang)

Fall Festival Duo Seeks Expansion

Laura Bogart and Martha Smith have had a lot of fun chairing the Fall Festival for the past two years. November 14, 2009 will be their final appearance in this role. They would like to make this year’s chairmanship a trio or even a quartet, in order to achieve a smooth transition to the festival in 2010. Fall Festival features Contemporary Music and involves about 500 students. It is a real practice motivator during the back-to-school period. This year’s Festival will again take place at Cherrydale United Methodist Church in Arlington, but incoming Chairpeople will be free to select a different site, if they so choose. Contact Laura or Mar-tha for more information and get in on this year’s fall fun!

Newsletter Editor Bids Farewell

Six years ago, I took over the job of editing the NVMTA News from the legendary Jo Lombard, a hard act to follow. It has been a very enjoyable learning experience. I’d like to use the space I have left to express my THANKS to

• NVMTA Presidents Donna Olson, John Healey and Julie Slingerland for three terms of exemplary service and lead-ership. Best wishes to Jim Litzelman through 2011 and Ken Lee, 2011-13. NVMTA continues in good hands.

• Assistant Corresponding Secretaries Catherine Roseberry, Margaretha Nekimken, and Jeanne Lowe, who faith-fully mastered the intricacies of labeling, sorting and taking the newsletters to the Falls Church Post Office Bulk Mail Office. It’s easier now that six of the nine issues each year are online, but those few of you who have requested print-outs of every newsletter owe Jeanne Lowe special thanks for cheerfully mailing them.

• All officers and chairs who have turned in their reports by deadline and supplied photos to help tell the story. Amy Rothstein has extended warm welcomes to new members and kept all our contact information up-to-date. In the fu-ture I hope all submissions will continue to be timely. In the future please avoid the use of text boxes, all caps, and spacing, rather than tabbing. Your cooperation will make the next editor’s job much easier.

• My family: daughter Lilli designed the logo now used on the Newsletter and many NVMTA publications and forms. Daughter Shelby and son David taught me many helpful tricks for navigating Publisher software and editing photos. My husband Steve listens empathetically and waits patiently for meals.

Please accept my apologies for any omissions, errors, or oversights I have unintentionally committed in the last 54 is-sues. I have tried to make the News reflect the wide range of NVMTA activities as completely as possible, while relying on news gatherers who are also busy event chairs and teachers. I hope you will give my successor, Laura Marchisotto Bogart, your complete cooperation so that we may keep ourselves well-informed about this wonderful organization that has meant so much to me for 30 years. With 10 extra hours each month, I plan to practice more often and give more attention to NVMTA’s Scholarship Endowment Fund, Professional Development Grants, Certification and MusicLink connections. Best wishes, Laura. I know you’ll be a wonderful editor.
