Sr. Francis Ennis was an Irish nun I had the good fortune to know many
years ago back in Dublin. She was the director of a small “nursery school,”
but a school with a difference. Many of the children there had been re-
ferred for care by the children’s courts, children’s welfare officers, or the
Gardai (Irish Police). To describe her as bossy, pushy, tyrannical, and a
force to be reckoned with would be an understatement. She was a true
dragon of a nun, but I have never come across a more devoted or truer advocate for children
and their parents. With the put-upon, the beaten, the outcast, the hurt child, the broken soul, she
was as gentle as a lamb. With the bully, the abuser, the violent, when it came to protecting chil-
dren and mothers, she was a lion. Sr. Francis was one of the best shepherds I have ever had the
privilege to know.
There are lots of different sorts of shepherds and Jesus chose this image to describe Himself and
those He placed in leadership over the Church - the pope, bishops, and priests. Men who were to
be willing to die, if necessary, to care for God’s sheep. Yet, as you are now tired of hearing me
say, the most important shepherds in our children’s lives are their parents. Protecting, feeding,
guiding, and even searching for the lost is all part of the life of the shepherd, and the parent.
Obviously, Sr. Francis didn’t have any children of her own. That didn’t matter, she was a shepherd
of other people’s children, and other people. This is the same for us also. Jesus calls us all to be
good shepherds and the good shepherd takes care of all the sheep not just his/her own. Being a
shepherd is a way of life, not a job. We are called to be shepherds. In fact, God sends us into the
world to be shepherds. A shepherd must be as fiery as a dragon, as strong as a lion, and as gen-
tle as a lamb. Not just for his own, but for the sake of all the sheep. What a great way to live a life.
Jesus, in a moment of sadness and empathy, said to His apostles, “I look around and I see the
people and they are like sheep without a shepherd.” It is my hope, one day, to commission for
our church a great painting of the Good Shepherd to remind us all of our calling and our mission.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Today, we celebrate “Good
Shepherd Sunday” where we
reflect on Jesus’ care and love
of us and hear his words, “I
came so that they may have
life and have it more abun-
dantly.”
By your gift to the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul you will reveal
the love of the “Good Shep-
herd” to your suffering brothers
and sisters.
QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
REFLECT AND RESPOND TO THE SCRIPTURES
FIRST READING
Luke tells us that Peter often testified: “Save yourself from this
corrupt generation.” How is this message still applicable today?
SECOND READING
Peter asserts that the virtue of patience in one’s suffering is a
grace from God because Jesus modeled patient suffering. How
does the exercise of this spiritual disposition help bring peace of
mind?
GOSPEL READING
Using the metaphor of sheep and gatekeeper, Jesus teaches his
disciples the importance of remaining focused on his voice. Why
do you think people are so easily distracted from other voices?
Please show your support for
our parish by supporting our
advertisers. We wouldn’t be
able to bring you our bulletin
every week without them,
and right now they need
your help more than ever.
Please encourage and
remind others to show their
support and do business with
our advertisers during these
hard times.

EXTENSION OF PUBLIC MASS SUSPENSION
The Lord is
my shepherd;
there is nothing
I shall want.
(Psalm 23)
On April 28, 2020 the Catholic bishops of Ohio announced that
they are extending the suspension of public Mass through Friday,
May 29. We hope to begin once again celebrating public Mass
together beginning with the Solemnity of Pentecost the weekend
of May 30/31.
Each of the bishops of Ohio, once again, dispenses the Catholic
faithful who reside in their respective dioceses and all other Cath-
olics currently in their territories from the obligation of attending
Sunday Mass during this time. The bishops ask for the cooperation
and adherence of all the faithful to the governor’s directives dur-
ing this period.
Together we continue to pray for all who are suffering from
Covid-19, for all health care workers and first responders, for all
the deceased and their families, and for an easing of the anxiety
and tension caused by this pandemic. Relying on the Motherly
care of Our Lady, Health of the Sick, we unite our sufferings to
those of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and we trust in the glorious hope of
His Resurrection.

FACE MASKS NEEDED
During this time of crisis, we are looking for your help. We are ask-
ing for those who can sew to make facemasks to help our health
care professionals and community members in this time of crisis.
We are also in need of: cotton fabric, bias tape, and elastic. Half
inch bias is best. Flat elastic or cord would work. We are using the
blue basket in the church atrium as a drop off/pick-up location.

LIVE THE LITURGY
When you wake up in the morning, whose voice is the first one
you listen to? Your own? Someone else’s? Or God? We all listen
to someone and follow some sort of guidelines and principles.
If it is a secular voice that propels us to get up in the morning and
take up the task of the day’s agenda, then we may find ourselves
off track. The advice found in the Acts of the Apostles was as true
then as it is now, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
Inspiration
for the Week
Most of what we listen to in secular
voices is off the axis of truth and dis-
torted. It may sound attractive, but it
is deceptive at best. Many have
gone astray like sheep and need to
return to the Good Shepherd.
Only Jesus can offer us the gate of
life, and only Jesus as the Good Shep-
herd can really motivate us to take
on the challenges of life. If we don’t
recognize his voice, we can risk fac-
ing destruction.

WHY DO WE DO THAT?
CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED
Daily Prayer
vs. Mass?
QUESTION:
I have a friend who says she
doesn’t need to attend Mass
because she prays to God eve-
ry day. What are your thoughts
on this justification?
ANSWER:
If the only reason for going to
church were to talk to God,
your friend might be right. Pray-
er is not something limited to a
physical place or even a holy
place. If the sole purpose of the
Church were prayer, it would
be a narrow purpose indeed.
The Church is a community of
believers, formed by “one Lord,
one faith, one Baptism.” It is an
outward sign of our faith in God
instituted by Christ, and the pur-
pose of the Church is to give us
grace, that is, a share in God’s
life.
Coming to Mass is not really for
God’s sake, but for ours. If we
believe that Jesus is truly pre-
sent in the holy Eucharist, then
we will want to be in his pres-
ence. We will want to be fed by
him. Our daily prayer and good
works are strengthened by our
authentic encounter with our
Lord. For Catholics, it is at Mass
that we celebrate the source
and summit of our faith. If this is
true, why would we ever stay
away?
RECOGNIZING THE VOICE OF JESUS
When my wireless provider introduced HD Voice, the voice I
heard on my phone was unbelievably clear, and it felt at times
like both the caller and I were in the same room. The best aspect
of this feature is that it didn’t cost the customer any additional
fees, and it didn’t require any changes to the phone. I could say
it was free, but I suspect I was already paying for it in my monthly
bill anyway. At least it felt free.
The clearer the voice calling you, the easier it is to recognize who
it is on the other end of the line. In John’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of
the gatekeeper who opens the gate and calls for his sheep. They
respond because they know his voice. Others try to lure the
sheep when the gatekeeper is not there, but the sheep find their
voices unclear or unfamiliar.
Jesus is our gatekeeper. But unlike receiving something for free
from a wireless company, to be able to hear his voice we need
to pay attention and practice listening. By developing a steward-
ship way of life that is mindful and prayerful, we become attuned
to his voice and are able to discern when the call is from our Lord
and when it is from an imposter. It is great to talk about all the
things we can do and all the gifts we can share, but if we are not
listening for his call to hear where our offerings are needed, we
can end up like a lost sheep searching for the gatekeeper.

What is a Deacon?
Deacon comes from the Greek word for service: diakonia. A
permanent deacon is a man ordained to serve as Christ who
”came not to be served but to serve.” How does a man be-
come a deacon? Through a process of discernment and for-
mation that takes about three to five years. If a man is married,
his wife and family must also come to embrace the joys and
demands of having a husband and father who is a deacon.
The Office of the Permanent Diaconate is sponsoring a series of
informational evenings for men who are wishing to know more
about the Permanent Diaconate. Wives are encouraged to
attend. If our current situation improves and we are able to
conduct live meetings, there will be a local meeting at St. Ma-
thias the Apostle Church, Forest Park, on May 26 at 7 PM. For
more information and to register, call Deacon Mark Machuga
at 263-6641 or visit the Diaconate page on the Archdiocesan
website: www.catholiccincinnati.org.
