Memorial Day was originally intended to honorthose that had allen while fighting or our Country. Some people have extended it to include those whoserved, those who stood and waited and those who
loved them all. My late wie, JuDee Koski Blockhus, saw MemoriaDay as a time to honor all loved ones. She spent hoursdays and lots o effort to see that many who no longerhad amily locally, were decorated or Memorial Day. So this year, i you went to the Hillview Cemetery inHinsdale and thought that it looks a little more barrenthan previous years, now you know why. ~ Jon A. Blockhus

Please be ‘Bear Aware’ Montana Fish, Wildlie and Parks and the Bureauo Land Management would like outdoor enthusiasts to be“Bear Aware,” even in northeast Montana. Although bearencounters are rare in most o FWP Region 6, there arecurrently some black bears present in the Little Rockies
and the Bears Paw Mountains. In addition, black bears areoccasionally ound wandering ar rom their traditionalareas, and preventative measures should always be taken toprevent wildlie encounters. Black bears have been ound rummaging throughgarbage cans at Camp Creek campground, located justoutside o Zortman. Te BLM, who administers the CampCreek campground, is taking steps to alleviate this issue.Bears have also been slpotted near other communities andresidences in the Little Rockies. However, i bears are going to become a local wildlie
species that we can all enjoy, we need to be smart about livingwith them. Tis includes preventing situations that habituatebears, such as rummaging through garbage and exposure toother unnatural ood attractants. It is unlawul to intentionally, or to inadvertently, eed bears. When bears access garbage and other oodsources, they can become ood-conditioned and potentiallybe dangerous. Wildlie officials ofen have to euthanize ood-conditioned bears in the interest o public saety, a situationthat everyone wants to avoid. A much better option is toprevent bears rom becoming habituated in the first place.
FWP and the BLM remind olks that live in areas wherebears might be to always:• Secure garbage inside a garage or secure shed• Bring pet ood in at night• Clean up livestock ood• Bring in bird eeders, and clean up spilled seed In addition, hunters and other recreationists arereminded to properly store game meat, ood, livestock eed, garbage, and all other attractants in a bear-resistant manner.Tis also discourages other wildlie, such as raccoons andskunks, rom causing problems with your belongings as well.
