NAPS)—Despite the economic downturn—or perhapsbecause of it—a new survey of American homeowners showsthey overwhelmingly recognize the value, beauty, durabilityand safety of granite countertops.

The survey of 1,588homeowners, conducted online byHarris Interactive on behalf of TheMarble Institute, found that 76percent of homeowners agree withthe statement “Nothing beats thebeauty and value of granitecountertops” and 75 percent ofhomeowners who intend toremodel their kitchens in the nexttwo years indicated they wantgranite countertops.

“The survey shows what ourcustomers are telling us: Nomatter what the economy lookslike, homeowners recognize thatgranite countertops enhance thevalue of their homes,” said G.K.Naquin of Stone Interiors inLoxley, Alabama, whose companysells granite and othercountertops. “Consumers who areremodeling their kitchens seegranite countertops as a safeinvestment in their homes. Theyprefer this natural stone to othermaterials because they understandit pays for itself in terms of higherresale value.”

When asked to rate whichcountertop material mostenhances the value of their homes,homeowners favored granite bymore than a three-to-one marginover the second choice: solidsurface materials, such asCorian®. Synthetic ormanufactured stone products,such as Silestone®, were rated a more distant third by thehomeowners.

By overwhelming margins, homeowners agreed with thefollowing statements about the natural stone:

• 93 percent said granite countertops are beautiful• 91 percent said granite countertops are durable• 89 percent said granite countertops are safe.And 93 percent of homeowners who intend to remodel their

kitchens in the next two years agreed that granite countertopsare safe, reflecting the findings of several comprehensive

scientific studies conducted during the past several years. “Natural stone like granite has been used in homes for

thousands of years, and now that new technology has reducedthe cost of producing and shipping it around the world, more

homeowners are embracing thebeauty, durability and safety ofgranite countertops,” said GaryDistelhorst, CEO of the MarbleInstitute of America, whichcommissioned the survey.“Independent consumer surveyshave consistently shown thatAmericans love the natural lookof granite and value it above othercountertop products.”

The study showed consistentsupport for granite across regionsof the country. Homeowners withcollege degrees and higher in -comes voiced a slightly higherpreference for granitecountertops. Seventy-four percentof college graduates and 75percent of those with annualhousehold incomes of $75,000 orgreater indicated they wantgranite countertops for the nexttime they remodel their kitchens.

Homeowners with householdsof five people or more wereespecially supportive of granite.Eighty-seven percent of theserespondents agreed with thestatement “The next time Iremodel my kitchen, I wantgranite countertops.”

This is the second nationalconsumer survey to showconsumers prefer granite. A 2008study showed 55 percent ofconsumers wanted granitecountertops in their dream

kitchens. The survey was also conducted by Harris from Oct.7–9, 2008 of 2,021 U.S. adults ages 18 years and older.

The 2012 study focused on homeowners. It was conductedonline within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalfof Marble Institute of America from January 5–9, 2012 among2,541 adults ages 18 and older, 1,588 of whom werehomeowners.
