THE ASCENSION
OF THE LORD
Where did he go? Many times when we think of those who have died, we imagine escape from
this world to a purely spiritual place. Jesus' Ascension can leave us in a place of confusion.
What happens to Jesus? And why does this matter to us?
The Ascension has been confirmed in the Creed for two millennia. In Jesus' Ascension, we're
invited to consider our own ultimate end. Regardless of death's reality now, we believe in the resurrection of the
body and the reunification of body and soul. One day, earth and heaven will meet perfectly and without end. We anticipate this "new heaven and a new earth" at every Mass
and throughout the beauty, truth, and love of the Church and her members. Today, celebrate a foreshadowing of the
fullness we all await!
IN YOUR CHARITY…
Please pray for the sick of the parish, especially: Cathy Capodagli, Jen Polen, Joyce Bonadonna, Stephanie Merenda, Louis Mang, Diane Lapp, Katherine Limardi, Lawrence Lewandowski, Gilbert Baumgardner, Dolores Griffin, Edith Wagner, Alvin Wagner, Kevin Gaughan, Michael Raichel Sr., Richard Mueller, Michael Hanavan, Sister Maria Lugosi, Susan Czajkowski, Mary Ann Cain, Mary Heubach, Dolores Quagliana, Nick Fisher, Lenny Reco, Jerry Rowland, Millie Zuccaro, Angie Davide, Anthony DiPiano, Sara Baxter, Jeanine Gilligan, Elaine Klee, John Mondel, Joyce Murphy, Don Osborne, Janet Zeller, and for the deceased: Josephine Kline. Also for the men and women in service, for peace in the world and for vocations. (Kindly notify the rectory when a name should be removed from our list).

My Dear Parish Family,
I would like to extend our congratulations and blessings to Rev. Mark Noonan who has been appointed by Bishop Malone to the Office of Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for our diocese. Father Mark is the brother of fellow parishioner Tom Noonan. Also to Mr. Jack O’Connor who
was named Veteran of the Month for the 60th Senate District. Jack continues to work with veterans who have special needs. You will see Jack every Sunday at the 11a.m. Mass. God bless both of you!
Peace and love, Father Joe
SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
St. Ephraim wrote the following in the fourth century: "Who is far from love is in a bad state, and to be pitied. He passes his days in a delirious dream, far from God, deprived of light, and he lives in darkness." These are strong words, indeed. In the twenty-first century, nothing has changed. Love still can make all the difference.
Jesus commands us to love. We are to love God and each other. These are simple commands that are so hard to follow.
But do we not attest to the fact that God is love? How can we truly explain or understand the depths of love without knowledge of God? So, when we give love to someone, we are giving a glimpse of God to that person. When we love God, we are giving back to him a glimpse of himself since we are created in his image. A world without love is a world without God!
Before this Easter season ends, resolve to love more. The world needs more love. Through the act of loving, may it come to know God in a more profound way.
DEACON SPEAKIN’
Willing?
St. Paul’s was recently advised by a local attorney that a
parishioner, recently deceased, had included in her last will a bequest to St. Paul Parish. She was an active member of the parish and clearly wanted to provide help to St. Paul’s
after her death. Including this bequest in the tally of gifts to our ongoing capital campaign raises the campaign total above the $1 million mark. While efforts continue toward achieving the needed goal of $1.2 million, this bequest has provided a welcome boost.
It’s clear that the age profile of St. Paul’s Parish is skewed
toward the senior citizen segment. In this segment, many have limited discretionary incomes. At the same time, some may have “nest eggs” that will survive them. Combined
with a desire to provide for St. Paul’s future, some may
seriously consider making a bequest to St. Paul Parish in their wills. The love and support that one gives during life-time can be continued through a thoughtful bequest. Think about it. Talk to your attorney. Thank you.

CATHOLIC QUOTES
Love doesn't mean doing extraordinary or
heroic things. It means knowing how to do
ordinary things with tenderness.
-- Jean Vanier
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP RECOGNIZE
GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
"Get Together" was a popular song in 1967 by the Youngbloods. I was not alive when the song was released, but it was a song I played frequently learning how to play guitar when I was younger. The song called for all of us to come together and "try to love one another right now." It was a song that came out in the Vietnam War era and during somewhat of a hippie revolution, but perhaps the words belong to no real moment in time. They are simply the commands of Jesus.
Sometimes we minimize the power of love by cute pop songs and slogans that mean little without action. However, we can never underestimate the power of love. Love can tear down barriers between people, change tears to laughter, and mend relationships torn apart by sin. No option exists for disciples of Jesus Christ to not love others. Not only are we commanded to do so, but love is a gift we must pass on freely. If we give of our time, talent, and treasure, but choose not to love, we cannot claim to be truly committed disciples and good stewards. As this Easter season draws ever closer to an end, we must allow our love to bear witness to the source of all love, the Risen Jesus. This is our calling until, as the words of the Youngbloods' song states, "the one who left us here returns for us at last." -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC
LIFE EXPLAINED
Question: What are the fruits of the Holy Spirit?
Answer: St. Paul first enumerates these in the Letter to the Galatians. There are twelve of them. They are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. He explains in chapter 5 the proper use of freedom. The Galatians were divided within the community and the result is a litany of vice and corruption. The law of love had been set aside and in its place greed, selfishness, division, and other diseases of the spirit are given free reign. These are the evils that enslave us, denying us the basic freedom we need to live our faith. Freedom is not a license to give in to the baser drives of our being, but rather an ability to choose the higher gifts and the life of faith. It is not a freedom from, but rather a freedom for. We are freed from the slavery of sin for the life of faith. The virtues St. Paul lists are the very ones that we often associate with saints, who live these virtues in extraordinary ways in very ordinary lives. The fruits of the Spirit are the way we measure our growth in holiness and in faith.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the fruits of the Holy Spirit as perfections that the Spirit forms in us as "the first fruits of eternal glory" (#1832). In other words, these are the virtues that are the result of living our faith and bringing it to perfection.
PRAYER
FOR TEACHERS
Christ our Teacher,
you conveyed your message through parables and proclamations,
through mighty deeds and miracles, through silence, sacrifice, and love. On this National Teacher Day,
may all educators be inspired by your example of patient invitation to truth.
Grant them the grace to lead by example, to teach with wisdom and authority, and to treat every child with dignity.
May they be strengthened to continue in this necessary work for the Kingdom of God.
Amen.
