Leadership Summit News by Abbie Bill, Professional Development

Our 2016 Annual Leadership Summit was held on Saturday, February 20, in Ocala. It was held at Rasmussen College, which is located 5 minutes west of I-75. The summit was attended by 56 family child care providers and co-providers. Daphine Harvey, Operations Review Specialist-Central Region, Child Care Regulation, did a presentation of the new DCF website CARES (Childcare Administration Regulation & Enforcement System). Collin Kostiha, of Florida Day Care Insurance, shared the importance of providers carrying business liability coverage and the requirement for school readiness providers. Tammy Tener, FFCCHA Ex-ecutive Director, also spoke about how important it is to be a part of the FFCCHA team and how providers can support FFCCHA. Attendees were updated on the website features that benefit members such as the Event Calendar, Area Rep Map with local Chapters, and On-line payments. Cynthia Krosky, CSP, LCWS, President of Achieving Corporate Excellence, Inc. presented “Team Building to Increase an Organization’s Potential.” The providers participated in several group activities designed to work together as a team. Activities included working toward a common goal by making a “team agreement,” identifying each participant’s skills they bring to the team and setting up an “Action Plan.”

The 2016 Conference Team gave an update to the Full Board members. Dates and hotel contracts have been signed for 2017-2020 conferences. On-line credit card payments are available once again on the website. Welcome to 2 new Area Reps, Lula Owens for Area 12 and Marcella Copeland for Area 1 to begin in their positions immediately. Arleen Lambert was voted in as Professional Development officer for the new term to start July 1st. The Nomination Committee is still accepting applications for Treasurer, Secretary, Chapter Coordinator and Legislative Liaison. Bonuses were approved for Executive Director and Finance Assistant. Recent Update since the meeting: Tasheba Berry’s application has been processed through the Nomination Committee and she has been appointed by the President to fill the vacant Public Relations officer position.

Friday, May 6, 2016 is National Provider Appreciation Day: A special day to recognize child care providers, teachers and other educators of young children all over America. Show your love, respect, and support by doing one or more of the suggestive items:

Get together with other parents to create a surprise Send flowers, cards or a handwritten note of appreciation Bring breakfast or lunch for your provider and for the kids Work with your child to create a special remembrance Buy something for your provider's play area Give your provider a paid day off, a raise, or a bonus Check to see if your employer provides scholarships for toys,

equipment or training that you can sponsor as a parent What ever it takes, just show her how important she is!

Let your child’s provider know you love and respect her for her hard work. It takes a special person to be a child care provider and you have one caring for your child!!!

Do You Want to Show Your Love & Respect to Your Child’s Child Care Provider?

Win a Free Hotel Night for 2016 Conference!!

And Get your Name/Family Child Care Home listed in the conference program! Here’s how: Encourage your parent/clients to participate as a Parent Sponsor of the conference. For every $25 collected, your name (Provider) will be entered in a drawing for a chance for the free night. Winner will be announced at the end of the Full Board Meeting in April in Ocala.

Copy PARENT sponsor forms in the January or April issues of The Grapevine newsletter or print forms from the conference page on the web site: www.familychildcare.org

Give the forms to parents and collect the payment. FFCCHA must receive the payments by April FB Meeting to be eligible for the drawing. For parents entering the photo contest, the deadline is MAY 5 to EMAIL photo to [email protected] and payment must be sent separately and received by May 5, 2016 too.

If you have questions or want ideas on how to get your chapter members and parents to participate, contact Lula Owens via email: [email protected] or call 904-779-9988

Here’s some ideas that provider used to get parents to participate: 1. The provider takes a photo of each child and displays it on a wall at the FCC home and asks parent to make a donation. If

the parent makes a $15 donation or more, then the provider emails the child’s photo into the photo contest for the parent. 2. Mail form to all past parent clients and hand write a note on it asking for a “generous” donation.

The Grapevine, A Publication of FFCCHA, Inc. April 2016

Submitted by: Eva Anderson FFCCHA Newsletter Editor

In our last issue of The Grapevine, we left off about the many resources that Nabyonga Regina and Tonny received and how I had made the connection to help a fellow co-worker from the other side of the world. The story continues below:

At the time, she only had a few children and was ready to give up. I took her under my wings, as to say, and I mentored her, I coached her and I gave her hope that she could do it, if only she just believed hard enough and believed in herself that she could do it. With my mentoring Regina, over the last few years she now has over 80 children that she is educating and caring for. She now has a registered organization called LWANNUNDA CHILDCARE FOUNDATION where she educates the children in her country. She is hoping to become partners with other non-profit organizations in her country. Do you want to know a little secret? She is educating the children the American style, because of the many resources she has received from me. Her children have since elevated in their knowledge. She is now being asked from other teachers in her country how she “got her children to be so smart?” She later asked me if it would be okay to share the resources I sent to her and I said “by all means please do, if it’s for the sake of the children”. This is all because of the power of being a mentor, going out into the world, and monitoring those that need just a little help and maybe a little push. Use your power of being a mentor and go out and empower someone. You can do it! Isn’t that why you took Florida Family Child Care Home Association (FFCCHA) M.E.N.T.O.R. Training? Please read her direct quote below! “It's almost three years since you became my mentor but am very happy that you have made me a person to ask about teaching young children in the community. Your mentor work helped me improve my preschool, by the time you started mentoring me I had a few kids but now I have 84 kids. Though we don't have the best facilities but in the quality of services and education we provide, we are considered model. Our church will be celebrating 115 years since it was started by the missionaries, yesterday (August 20, 2015) I got a letter telling me that am among those to be recognized based on the great work am doing with young children. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn't ge t this recognition and progress. I have also tried as much as I can to share the books you sent me with fellow teachers in different schools. THE CREATIVE CURRICULUM FOR FAMILY CHILDCARE book you sent me took us back to college because there are lots of things we were doing that is not good to children. For example, using food as a reward or punishment was a common practice here and it's one of the most don'ts. How to make our own blocks, toys were great, before we thought we should just buy them and we thought we cannot make them. Here in Africa we are known for punishing children by beating them at school, when I read child development in the curriculum book I found out that we did not understand what children of different stages of growth are like Emotionally, Socially, Cognitively, Physically. So when I share this with fellow teachers everyone was surprised, everyone was saying “Oh we were punishing children for nothing most of what they do is part of their development”. I know I got you by God's grace because I had made several attempts, but in vain. I hope I had a platform where I could nominate you for an award because you are changing the world”! GOD BLESS YOU! Your friend forever Nabyonga Regina P. O. Box 480 Masaka+256 Uganda +256751752244 Nabyonga and her son Katumba Tonny would love to become friends to Americans! Please write them, send letters, and/or cards from America. The children she cares for get very excited to read my letters and open packages that I send to them. “Remember, a child is a child, is a child, regardless where they live on planet Earth”. The Power of being a mentor is a great leadership skill if you apply it toward the mission and goals of FFCCHA: “…to promote and encourage quality professional family child care through education, legislation, advocacy, mentoring, caring, and love.” If you are a FFCCHA Mentor, be sure to go out and inspire, motivate, encourage others to become a better person; leader and educator for Florida’s children. If you own it, use it! If you are not a mentor: Try it; if you are like me, you’ll love it! ~Eva Anderson~

Federal Changes for the School Readiness Program By Molly McCabe,

Department of Children and Families, Child Care Regulation and Stephanie Gehres, Office of Early Learning

On November 19, 2014, President Obama signed the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) Act of 2014 into law. This law, commonly referred to as “the CCDF Reauthorization” reauthorizes the child care program for the first time since 1996, and represents an historic re-envisioning of the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) program. The law made significant changes to federal law--some that impact just child care providers who receive CCDF funding (“school readiness providers”), and some that impact ALL child care providers. The law changes Florida’s system of child care regulation in the following ways: Requires States to establish health and safety requirements in 10 different topic areas. Florida’s pre-service and in-service training will be updated to include additional content, increase in the number of hours that must be completed and change to the timeframe for completion of the pre-service training. All child care providers serving children receiving school readiness funding will be required to receive pre-service and ongoing training on such topics.

States are required to adopt policies regarding discipline and expulsion in child care settings. Florida’s administrative rule will be revised to include this requirement.

Revises criminal background check requirements to include additional disqualifying crimes and additional screening components. Legislation (House Bill 7053) has been drafted to address this new requirement.

Requires States to conduct pre-licensure and annual inspections of licensed and license-exempt CCDF providers. Legislation (House Bill 7053) has been drafted to address this new requirement.

States are required to establish qualifications and training for licensing inspectors and appropriate inspector-to-provider ratios. The department has adopted a management policy regarding these new requirements.

Requires States to have standards for all school readiness providers regarding group size limits and appropriate child-to-provider ratios based on the age of children in child care. Legislation (House Bill 7053) has been drafted to address this new requirement.

Requires emergency preparedness planning and statewide disaster plans for child care. The department is working with partner agencies to draft a statewide disaster preparedness plan relating to child care, and is updating the Disaster Plan template that is provided for use by child care providers.

States must make available, by electronic means, the number of deaths, serious injuries, and instances of substantiated child abuse that occur in child care settings each year. The Child Care Program website is being updated to include this information.

States are required to have a website describing processes for licensing and monitoring child care providers, processes for conducting criminal background checks, and offenses that prevent individuals from being child care providers. The Child Care Program website is being updated to include this information.

Florida’s Office of Child Care Regulation and Office of Early Learning have been hard at work since the law passed to implement these new requirements. Stay tuned to the Department’s website, under “What’s New” and the Office of Early Learning’s Website for upcoming provider meetings on the changes.
