PRESS RELEASE 30th April 2014
Southgate’s May Day Fair to support The Royal British Legion, Greater London District
The annual community event organised by Christ Church Southgate will take place on Monday 5th May from 11am until 4pm.
The fair, now in its 36th year, takes place on Southgate Green and is organised by
Christ Church Southgate with support from other local groups including the Explorer
Scouts, the Highlands & Southgate Squadron Air Training Corp and the Southgate
Green Association and offers a fun day out for the whole family at what is
Southgate’s largest and most successful community event.
Recognising the centenary of the First World War, the main beneficiary of this year’s
event is The Royal British Legion Greater London District. The British Legion is the
UK’s leading Armed Forces charity. They provide practical, emotional and financial
support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present, and their
families.
The fair will be opened by Fr Peter Jackson, Vicar of Christ Church and David
Burrowes MP and outgoing May Queen Amelia Marriott. The Deputy Mayor of
Enfield, Cllr Ingrid Cranfield, will be in attendance to crown the new May Queen.
Stalls will include books, music, toys, cakes and plants, with a wide variety of fun and
games for all ages including crazy golf, a climbing wall, train rides and Go-Karts,
face-painting a magician and much more. A wide variety of food and drink will be on
offer, with lunches served in the Walker Hall and the Church House bar open
throughout the fair. The beautiful church building will be open for tours, including
tours of the belfry.
Entertainment in the arena will include traditional Maypole Dancing as well as street
dancing by Streetz Ahead, performances by the Latymer School Drama Group, The
Acorn Theatre Group as well as demonstrations by Enfield Chace Dog Training Club
and a Drill followed by the Air Cadets Band.
The fair opens from 11am until 4pm. The official opening will be at 12pm.
