Chili’s has final-l y a r r ived a t Fort Hood and it is going to be a great addition for our Soldiers and Families ! This effort has b e e n i n t h e works for several years and repre-sents the hard work by many to bring this facility to a reality. Our biggest thanks go to Military Restau-rant Holdings - Ft Hood, LLC who signed this agreement to provide this level of name brand casual dining and to our local communities who supported this effort 100 percent as they have supported Fort Hood in the same manner for many years. Now we get to see the front doors open to the very first Fort Hood Chili’s customers! This Chili’s is the new prototype for Chili’s and will seat 197 customers, offer “Curbside To Go” service, and have a bar so stay tuned to Channel 10 or www.hoodwmr.com for the latest.

Where can I leave comments or sug-gestions about Fort Hood Family and MWR and other Fort Hood organiza-tions and be sure that they are heard and responded to?

Clarice Hawkins

Hello Clarice,

The best place to leave comments or sug-gestion is the Interactive Customer Evalu-ation (ICE) system, which is a web-based tool that collects feedback on services pro-vided by various organizations throughout the Department of Defense (DoD). The ICE system allows customers to submit online comment cards to rate the service providers they have encountered at mili-tary installations. ICE comments are taken very seriously and are designed to improve customer service by allowing managers to monitor the satisfaction levels of services provided through reports and customer comments. Many Family and MWR facili-ties have kiosks where you can submit ICE comments or you utilize this amazing resource online at your leisure by visiting http://ice.disa.mil.

13 for Single Soldiers Day! Better

Opportunities for Single Soldiers or BOSS

hosts Fort Hood’s biggest annual event in

appreciation of single Soldiers and their

contribution and sacrifice to our country.

BOSS promotes a strong emphasis on

recreation, community service and well

being. The Better Opportunities for Single

Soldiers program brings together a commu-

nity of single Soldiers through good deeds

and good times, and is designed to provide

single Soldiers with innovative recreational

activities as well as a forum for quality of life

issues between the single soldier, installation

staff and command. The Fort Hood BOSS

program provides an alternate platform for

Soldiers to give feedback, and enhances per-

sonal investment in “The Great Place”.

Single Soldiers Day is completely free and

open to all single Soldiers and is designed to

boost morale. Also, Single Soldiers Day is a

great way for single Soldiers to meet other

single Soldiers, win all kinds of prizes and

most importantly relax and have fun! There

will be a free concert by Drowning Pool,

free food, volleyball tournament, softball

tournament, 3 on 3 basketball tournament,

water balloon toss, flag football, Strong-Man

competition, body building, a limbo con-

test, HMMWV pull as well as a tug-o-war. The

festivities for Single Soldiers Day at Abrams

Physical Fitness Center will begin at 8 am on

Friday, May 13 and will continue until 6 pm

that evening.

Enjoy your time at Single Soldiers Day and

expect to see many events hosted by the BOSS

program throughout the year. Expect every-

thing from formal dances to Valentine’s Day

parties, to lending a hand to building homes

or helping at Special Olympics events, BOSS

gets involved in the community. For more in-

formation on Single Soldiers Day or the

ver wanted to check out Central Texas’s largest water festival? Did you know it’s in our own back yard? The summer months are fast approaching and BLORA

is the place to be to kick off the fun! For those new to the area this is a great opportunity to find out about what others have known for years, the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area offers an unforgettable way to celebrate summer! You will get up close and personal with the kind of fun that just screams “SUMMER”! This year, Waterfest enthusiasts are in for a jam-packed weekend of fun, entertainment and adventure! For just $6 per vehicle each day, your whole weekend is mapped out and all you have to do is show up! The weekend of June 4 and 5 from 10 am to 6 pm, your friends and Family will have the opportunity to cool off, splash around and just be a kid again! Each passenger vehicle is

assessed a $6 fee to enter the park each day for an unforgettable offering of events and activities. One of the most popular activities, is the opportunity to test the waters and your paddling skills in the kayak pool. The paddle boats will also be geared-up and ready to go and are enjoyed throughout the summer season. For those more into the splash of it all, the water wars featuring the balloon Sling Shot Shoot-out is a big hit! Partner up with friends and watch the water fly! Some other unforgettable adventures include the Gator Slip-n-Slide and Drown Rat Races. The kids will love the “land locked” choices such as bouncers, petting zoo and pony rides. When hunger strikes, head on over to the concession stand and grab some shade for a picnic; the lake views are incredible! For those who like the sand, Sierra beach is a great place to catch some rays and swim with friends and Family. Just up

the hill from there are two waterslides that will take your cares and your breath away! Kids of all ages love this summertime feature at BLORA. The slides take you quickly, zigzagging down the hill, all the while the blue water of Belton Lake is displayed in front of you, what more could you ask for! Ah yes.. We can’t forget the Kids’ Wash located right next to the waterslides. The Kid’s Wash is an opportunity for younger children to go through kid’s size sprinkle brushes and foam pads all the while getting drenched from head to toe! P.S. This is fun for parents to watch! Anglers, or fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the chance to watch and gain insight from professional bass fisherman. These professionals will demonstrate how to catch local species of fish in a 40-ft aquarium. Boat rentals are offered at a 25 percent discount throughout the weekend to military ID cardholders

attending Waterfest. Don’t forget to check out other park activities including mountain bike riding, paintball, horseback riding and camping. For many people in the area, the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is a great place to just sit back, relax and enjoy Texas in its natural splendor. This Festival allows the visitor the best of both worlds! An opportunity to make new friends and build new memories, but most of all to enjoy Central Texas while you’re here! The festival is open to the public. No military ID is needed when entering from Sparta Road in Belton. s

For more information on this event or other BLORA activities, call 254-287-2523. Visit www.hoodmwr.com for park directions and map.

FUNor many people growing up in the 80’s, the idea of roller skating brings back distant memories of disco lights and fog machines,

not to mention big hair! But in the more modern times that we enjoy here at Fort Hood, I look at this a bit differently. Roller skating is a fantastic and fun opportunity to burn up to 600 calories an hour! For a new approach to fun and fitness, check out the new and improved Family and MWR Health Promotions Aerobics and Skating Facility (BLDG 324, 37th Street, next to the Shopette). This place has it all with arcade games and concessions area, it’s the perfect place to book a party or just chill out and show off your moves! The Skating Center also has a pro shop with a large selection of everything you need including Quad and in-line skates as well as helmets, knee pads and more! Best of all, skates are sold at wholesale price plus shipping. Special order purchasing is available for items not in stock. Roller skating on Fort Hood is very economical in today’s economy, $5 per session. Sessions run on Fridays from 5 pm - midnight and Saturdays

from 1 - 5 pm. They are closed Sundays except for private parties or functions and private rental is also available during weekdays upon request. For a more structured approach to fitness, you don’t have to travel far. Located under the same roof is an amazing offering of Aerobic and Fitness classes! Tone your lower body with Step classes on Monday, Tuesday begins with Cardio kickboxing, Gliding, Hip Hop Funk, Piloga and 20/20/20. Wednesday’s class is Step and Sculpt and Thursday’s class is a Belly Dance Workout that was developed to gain core strength and enhance posture and balance. The week ends with the Saturday Boot Camp, where the instructor chooses a one and a half hour routine made up of hip hop funk, circuit training, gliding and much more. Classes are $25 per month or $3 per class, and for $200 up to 400 skaters can enjoy the facility for a maximum of 3 hours. Hours of operation are Monday - Thursday 5:30 - 6:30 pm and Saturday 9 - 10:30 am. For more info call 254-287-3550 or log on to www.hoodmwr.com. s

Travel

s the school year comes to a close and cabin fe-ver starts setting in, it is never too early to start planning for that special summer vacation. You know what they say, “Those that snooze, loose.”

To make sure that you do not snooze on these ideal summertime getaways, I have gone ahead and high-lighted some of the more interesting trips and vaca-tion spots across the great state of Texas. Volente Beach - Everyone loves a great water park and Volente Beach has just the right amount of varying water slides. Located on the shores of Lake Travis, Volente Beach is perfect for hot sum-mer days. A series of pools and kid-sized water fea-tures, plus a sandy beach all add up to a great place to cool off. Although there is a restaurant, picnics are permitted, so load up the cooler (no alcohol or glass containers) and plan to spend the entire day! The park is open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am – 6 pm until mid May and then open daily 10 am – 8 pm, from the end of May through mid-August. Admission to the park is $19.99 for adults (42 inches and taller) and $14.99 for seniors, chil-dren and military. In addition to the admission cost, there is a $5 parking fee as well.

South Padre Island – While water parks may be great for water slides and wading pools, it does not offer the natural habitat that good ole, Mother Nature does. Gather up the Family and head down to the popular tourist attraction on southern tip of Padre Island just across Laguna Madre, the bay sepa-rating the island from mainland. Visitors find a wide range of accommodations from campgrounds and Family motels to high-rise luxury hotels and condo rentals, marinas and seaside cottages. Restaurants feature fresh seafood harvested daily from the Gulf. South Padre is known for its water sports, including bay, surf, and deep-sea fishing, jet skiing, parasail-ing, sailing, and windsurfing. Other island activities include bicycling, tennis, shelling, and horseback riding on the beach. The popular Laguna Madre Na-ture Trail for nature enthusiasts and bird-watchers is north of the city next to the convention center. Six Flags Over Texas – While most people do associate the summertime with water, what summer would be complete without a trip to an amusement park? Since arriving at The Great Place 10 years ago, my daughter and I always make it a re-quirement to visit our favorite amusement park in

the state -Six Flags Over Texas. It is a fantastic park for the whole Family with some of the most thrilling roller coasters in the world, a top rated kiddie land area with rides for the small children, water rides, thrill rides, shows, games and many other Family attractions. s

hether your glass is half empty or half full, you can always depend on the Family and MWR to quench

your thirst for water fun. In fact, we have enough to keep your entire Family hydrat-ed. So, put on your swim gear and join in on this brief exploration of the waters of “The Great Place”! Our earth has approximately 326 mil-lion cubic miles of water which covers about 70 percent of the earth’s surface. Out of that, only 30,000 of those are fresh water lakes. That is where our first stop comes into place. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, waterfront offers just about everything un-der the sun when it comes to water activi-ties. If you are a water enthusiast you are in for a real treat! At that BLORA waterfront you will forget you are on the scorching hot dry land of central Texas as you splash your-self away. Now open through Oct 15, visit the waterfront and see what this fascinating hidden gem has for you. Waterfront activi-ties include: Sierra Beach, a swimming area, waterslide, paddleboat docks and Kid’s Auto Wash unit. Once you swim up an appetite

and your fingers and toes begin to wrinkle, you can take a break from the water and head over to the snack bar. There are plenty of yummy refreshments and it features a pa-tio deck that overlooks the beach area and beautiful Belton Lake. Perhaps you need more than a just a snack and you want to grill out. We’ve got you covered there too. Nice Family picnic shelters are adjacent to the beach. There’s actually more than 300 picnic sites and 143 covered picnic shelters, and several barbe-cue grills scattered throughout the park. You can do whatever you like! Swim, sun-bathing, go picnicking, fishing & boating and enjoy! All BLORA waterfront activities are FREE to park patrons. The summer oper-ating hours are daily from 10 am – 8 pm, but before packing up and heading out to BLORA don’t forget that as of March 1, 2011 there is a new gate fee in effect. There will be a nomi-nal gate fee of $2 per car for authorized DoD patrons who previously had FREE access and $8 per vehicle for all other civilian users, which does not affect the other fee struc-ture currently in place.

unning is a good way to burn fat, condition your heart and lungs, release endorphins and empower yourself. With a run held almost

every month Fort Hood Family and MWR makes it nearly impossible for anyone to have an excuse not to run. In addition to all of the runs offered, there are nine physical fitness centers that provide a great

atmosphere in which to train between races. If you need guidance on proper training techniques, several physical fitness centers offer certified instructors, who are knowledgeable in how the human body works, different body types, body movements and how to develop targeted exercise routines to increase flexibility, strength and endurance. ometimes it’s difficult to find activities that are Family-friendly these days. If you want an interesting day that is

educational and will get your kids outdoors for a bit, come by and visit the two superb museums on post. With a variety of military hardware on display indoors and out along with a vast collection of historical facts everyone in your Family will come away from the trip, feeling entertained and enlightened. Fort Hood is home to two museums, the 1st Cavalry Museum and the 3rd Armored Cavalry museum. Both are open Monday - Friday 9 am to 4 pm, Saturday 10 am - 4 pm and Sunday 12 - 4 pm. The 1st Cavalry Museum consists of both indoor and outdoor exhibits. The indoor exhibit has displays depicting everything from the American Civil War to the current War on Terror, along with plaques inform-ing visitors of the division’s participation in these

events. Outdoor exhib-its consist of Vehicles used throughout the history of the Cavalry to monuments to the

great deeds they have accomplished maintaining

our freedom. Everything from artillery systems to helicopters are available to view.

The 3rd Armored Museum also has a vehicle display park with vehicles of all types. Both the indoor and outdoor exhibits are new as of January 2010 and have a plethora of information on the amazing accomplishments of the United State’s Army 3rd Armored Cavalry Division. Wednesday, May 18th is International Museum Day, so take your Family and celebrate these treasure troves of historical knowledge and experiencing the fun and excitement of learning! s

urvivor Outreach Services (SOS) is an Army Community Service (ACS) program which provides short and long term support to Surviving Family Members for as long as they need it. Since SOS’s inception in 2009, CampLIFE!, a non-profit organization has sponsored several camping sessions

each year, in the central Texas area, which provides free recreational and counseling activities to Families of Fallen Soldiers. SOS and CampLIFE! are hosting a Mother’s Day Celebration at the SOS center located at 10043 Battalion Avenue on Saturday, May 7 from 11 am to 5 pm. Come out and enjoy a full day of fun summer camp activities! Surviving Family Members will be pampered while the kids are entertained! Some of the activities will include a bouncy house, dunking booth, and obstacle course. Units are encouraged to reach out to their Survivor Families to accompany them on this Family Fun Day! Another event scheduled this month is on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 from 12 to 3 pm. SOS will host a Memorial Day Reception at the SOS center immediately following the ceremony at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. The center will be open to provide Family Members and guests the opportunity to visit the Hall of Remembrance. Surviving Family Members of our Fallen Soldiers are invited to place a flag on the picture of their loved one. Light refreshments will be served. The next big event is the annual SOS and Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) Seminar and Good Grief Camp. This wonderful healing event is scheduled for July 7-9. For more information about any of these events, or SOS activities, please contact 254-288-3655. s

1. Teach the Value of Saving Karyn Hodgens, a veteran teacher, and her husband created a spreadsheet to explain the concept of compounding to their free-spending son. “Something clicked. He said, ‘You mean I’ll earn more money just by letting it sit there?’ He was an instant convert,” Hodgens says.

2. Share the Gift of Giving Susan Beacham, a former investment advisor, gives her teenagers coupons for family outings. Some-times, the coupons are just for fun, like a major league baseball game. Others may include a les-son, such as a coupon to purchase a purse made by refugee-women-turned-entrepreneurs and an invitation to meet them.

3. Use Technology Tech-savvy kids have plenty of options to learn from virtual money, but it does not replace the real thing. “They need to touch dollars and coins, count them, stack them and learn that they’re concrete things,” says Neale Godfrey, author of “Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees.”

4. Walk the Walk “You may be the greatest money manager in the world, but if you don’t show and tell your children what you’re doing, they can’t learn from you,” Beachem says.

5. Make Allowances Count “An allowance teaches children the natural consequences of money: The only way to get it is to earn it,” Godfrey says.

6. Go Beyond Spending Lessons Require kids to save, invest and donate. “They need to learn that money isn’t just for spending,” says Godfrey. You can do this by having your children divide their allowance into four clear jars labeled charity, quick cash, medium-term savings, and long-term savings.

7. Create Money-Matching Programs Matching your kids’ savings — the way employers match money in a 401(k) plan — can be a pow-erful motivator, says Godfrey.

8. Don’t be Too Generous Even if you can afford to give your teens a comfortable allowance — don’t, suggests Godfrey. “By about age 12, kids should do small, paying jobs for friends and family members,” she says. “By 16, they’re capable of getting summer jobs and saving for year-round expenses.”

ormally, our articles share the wonderful experiences and quality care that CYSS has to offer for active/retired military Families,

Department of Defense civilian employees and Department of Defense contractors. However, after reading these articles about tragedies happening to children as a result of parents finding child care services from want ads, Family friends, next door neighbors and now babysitters hired off of Craigslist, we must speak out. In a time period where technology rules everything around us and the internet is our daily link to the outside world, sites like Craigslist have become a marketplace. Craigslist allows sellers and buyers alike to promote or hunt the next bargain for prices almost too good to be true. The bargains of this internet bazaar extend from collectibles and antiques to jobs and child care services. Unfortunately, many of the prices are too good to be true, and these apparent bargains may come at a price far greater than some bargain hunters are equipped to pay. While Craigslist is arguably one of the largest internet sites in the world, it is run by a staff of no more than 50 people. Having such a small staff to maintain such a sizable business has a direct correlation to their inability to monitor the contents of the website. In fact, there is very little motivation for Craigslist to regulate the subject matter of the advertisements as a Federal law known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1998 shields them from legal liability for content created by users. Furthermore, incidents such as the “Craigslist Killer”, which was the recent subject of a Lifetime Movie

Network production, have prompted several state attorneys, interest groups, as well as Congress to pressure the website into censoring much of its areas. Therefore, one could only wonder, who are these individuals who are advertising babysitting services? Who do you call to find out if these individuals are mentally competent, regulated and trained in Early Childhood Development? Using Craigslist simply leaves too many important questions left unanswered when it comes to the health and welfare of your child. Your children are your greatest investment. Setting a strong foundation starts at a young age, and all of their early experiences can last a lifetime. Child, Youth and School Services recognizes and provides a network of individuals who are professionally trained to provide high quality care, a safe, caring, and healthy learning environment which fosters a solid foundation. In addition to offering full development programs, Family Child Care providers are required to have extensive background checks and annual health assessments. Both programs must have monthly/annual health, safety, and fire inspections, a broad range of ongoing competency-based training, age appropriate equipment, parent involvement/education plans, child and youth behavioral plans, parent resource libraries, creative curriculum, USDA meal plans, and much more. Centers are Nationally Accredited by the National Accreditation for Young Children. Several Family Child Care providers are Nationally Family Child Care Acreditated and offer extended, overnight, long term and weekend care. Furthermore, employees and providers are strongly
