How lovely is your dwelling place, O

Lord of hosts!

Blessed are they that dwell within

thy house, they praise thy name

evermore.

Psalm 84:1,4 as adapted by

Johannes Brahms

By the time this edition of The

Journal is published, I should be in

my new dwelling place high atop

Woodruff House. I am truly blessed

by those who opened their homes to

me while I was living a somewhat

nomadic lifestyle during April, and

I will be forever grateful to them.

As the April showers have

brought us vibrant and beautiful

May flowers, it is good to be in a

new home, experiencing new light

and new life as spring unfolds

around us. It is also good to once

again be surrounded by familiar

things, even if they are in

unfamiliar (for now) places. It is

good to start finding a rhythm and

a routine in this new home,

learning the scenic routes,

exploring the hole-in-the-wall

places, and finding out about the

richness of the history and future of

this wonderful community. It is

Path To Membership We would love to have anyone interested in becoming a member attend

a luncheon after service on June 2nd in the Parlor, hosted by the Deacons

and Council. We will discuss the workings and structure of the church as

well as Member status and expectations, so you can decide if you would

like to officially join.

On June 9th, we will have a New Member Sunday for anyone who

attended the Orientation to stand up and declare Membership through a

short Invitation and Response.

It’s painless, really, so bring your questions and your curiosity and

come and see what we are all about.

the Lord of Hosts in this

beautiful area and among the

people who live here.

German composer Johannes

Brahms wrote deeply moving

music for these verses of Psalm

84 in his German Requiem,

music which captures the

serenity and peace of those

dwelling in the house of their

God, and I have found that

serenity and peace here, not just

in moments of worship together,

but also in chatting with folks in

this beautiful dwelling place of

community.

In the coming months,

amidst planning for the Green

Fair, graduations, vacations,

and other end-of-the-program-

year celebrations and rituals, I

hope you have a moment to sit

and chat with me about what

makes this community a lovely

dwelling place of our God. What

excites you? What gives you

peace here? How could we offer

a peaceful dwelling to others in

our community? What does “you

are welcome here” mean to you?

Let's get together over a

beverage (coffee, tea, soda,

something stronger, or whatever

you enjoy) and chat about where

we are, where we've been, and

where we could be going. Shoot

me an email at

pastor.robyn@firstchurchwashin

gtonct.org and we can schedule

a time to be in conversation

together.

In this beautiful time of

spring, the earth and all that

dwells therein is truly a lovely

place.

Notes from The Deacons

We are excited to welcome

three new members to the Board

of Deacons; Sheila Anson, Hailey

Lovallo, and Henrietta Small

have agreed to join our merry

band! This brings our board to

thirteen members, many hands

make light work, and we are ex-

cited to explore new opportunities

that may be possible with the ex-

panded numbers. Our deacons,

both long-serving and brand new,

bring an extraordinary abun-

dance of gifts to our Congrega-

tion. If you are wondering if serv-

ing as a deacon might be right for

you now, or in the future – or if

you’re just a little superstitious

about the number 13 – there’s al-

ways room at the table, please

reach out to any one of us.

We are always open to

hear your ideas and feedback

about our worship and hospitali-

ty. We are also in need of your

gifts. The time of fellowship and

refreshment after worship is an

important part of our tie together.

We are always looking for those

who are willing to host coffee

hour. If you’re willing, let us

know. If you’re unsure how,

know that there’s always a Dea-

con of the Month ready and will-

ing to help.

Reaching Out to Help and Support Our Neighbors—Near and Far

Jim Esslinger (860-919-5207) or [email protected] , Missions Chair

Our next service date for the Loaves and Fishes Hospitality Kitchen is Thursday, May 30.

We are accepting sign-ups for contributions and still need 1 kitchen helper. The menus is

again Shepherd’s Pie, Salad, Bread, Fruit, Ice Cream… You can sign up online through the

link on at www.firstchurchwashingtonct.org, or on the bulletin board in the church hall. Drop-off for

food items is Wednesday, May 29 (until 5 pm) and Thursday, May 30 before noon. If you do sign up,

you will get a reminder at the beginning of that week.

If you have any questions about it, please contact Dick Connor [email protected].

I want to thank you all for stepping up donations for the food bank in New Milford. We have

collected 851 pounds to date and my hope is that we can reach 1200 pounds by June 30. Also,

remember there are people with dietary needs that visit the food bank also so low sodium and gluten

free items are always welcome. This year our plan is to have the proceeds go to the Warren-Washington

Food bank in Warren. Joe Mustich mentioned to me this past Sunday that they are looking for

donations and their supplies are low. Obviously we will continue to support the New Milford (and other)

Food Banks as well but may alternate between them.

Trivia Night will hopefully take place in the fall. We are waiting to hear back from Charlie Meade,

the coordinator of the event. The proceeds of this annual event go to the Loaves & Fishes building fund.

The building, by the way, is on schedule and so the funds are definitely needed to pay those construction

bills!

Our next Loaves & Fishes meal service date is on May 30. We have a fresh form waiting for your

offer of food donations and we also need one more server for that day. Check out the box below for more.

Easter Memorial donations (other than flowers) this year totaled $340 ($180 allocated for food and

$160 for shelter). The donations will be going to FISH (Friends in Service to Humanity) in Torrington.

FISH last year served 116,000 meals to 516 families (1,700 individuals). Also, their shelter has 35 beds

and found permanent housing for 41 shelter residents including 85 adults, 11 veterans and 6 children…a

total of 102 residents. I am very pleased to donate or Easter Memorial collection to this worthy

organization!

And finally, a very important offering is taking place on June 9, 2019: One Great Hour of Sharing

(OGHS). This is one of two offerings that the UCC holds annually. Throughout the month of May we

will share stories and more information during Mission Moments and you will see some of the many

areas where our donations make a difference in many people’s lives and how very important it is that we

all give as generously as we are able.

Many Thanks, Jim Esslinger

Please give generously on Sunday, June 9.

One Great Hour of Sharing, as part of Our Church’s Wider

Mission, is the special mission offering of the United Church of

Christ that carries God’s message of love and hope to people in

crisis. The UCC works with international partners to provide

sources of clean water, food, education and health care, small

business micro-credit, advocacy and resettlement for refugees and displaced

persons, and emergency relief and rehabilitation. OGHS also supports

domestic and international ministries for disaster preparedness and response.

YOUTH GROUP

Final meeting date of the program year: Sunday, May 26

The First Congregational Church of Washington's Youth Group is for grades 6-12 and all are welcome!

Our regular meetings are on the last Sunday of every month from 5-7 pm at the Parish House. Every

meeting involves a group discussion focusing on the current month's faith practice, food, games, and

much more. I

f you have any questions, please contact Emelie (203-405-6710) or Mike Burl,

or via email at [email protected], or [email protected] .

Youth Programs

Every second Sunday, a group of high school teens gather during coffee hour to

discuss the ways in which they can not only get more involved in the church, but also

how their faith gets involved in their lives outside of the church.

This group is open to new members in September and January. If you or your child

are in high school and are interested in joining, please contact Emelie Samuelson or

Mike Burl and get on the list for the next open enrollment date. (see contact info above)

Compassionate Communication Practice Group - Next meeting date is May 8

2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Parlor

There is no greater need than now for cultivating love and compassion for self

and others. As cultural forces seem to be creating a greater divide among

people, Jesus’ message of inclusivity and love are urgently needed.

Compassionate Communication, or Non-Violent Communication (NVC) as

taught by Marshall Rosenberg, is a way of communing with yourself and others to foster more

understanding and better outcomes for everyone.

The group meets on an on-going basis and newcomers are welcome. Please let Karen know if you

plan to attend (860-868-0569, x10) and we can get you on the mailing list. There are some ground-rules

the group has collectively established and we ask that you make an effort to learn and practice. For

more information about the concept, read: Non-Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg and

check out the resources we have available on our website at:

www.firstchurchwashingtonct.org/compassionate_communication

Living Your Faith

It was a fun April in Sunday School! We welcomed Pastor Robyn, prepared

ourselves for Easter, and celebrated Earth Day. Easter Sunday saw a record

number of kids visit our church. We are so thankful to have had such a fun

group celebrate the holiday with us. Thank you to those who extended an

invitation to friends and neighbors to join us. The Easter Egg Hunt was a huge

success, thank you to the Youth Group and all who helped make it happen!

Join us this May for more fun and learning as we prepare for the end of the school

year and the summer ahead!

COFFEE HOUR HOSTS ARE NEEDED for dates marked “OPEN”.

Hosts are responsible for setting up the large table in Wersebe Hall as well as the coffee table,

putting out snacks (whatever you want – can be as simple as chips and dip, crackers and

weather permitting. Then hosts responsible for cleanup afterwards. (This can also mean that

hosts recruit help from others in that effort!) Please sign up on the list(s) on the bulletin board

Green Team Update!

Reflecting the outcome of our Conversation Café in January, the Green Team has set an agenda

of topics for the coming year. We hope you will participate in these events and we invite anyone

interested in getting actively involved in making environmental change to join us in the planning

as well. See below for our next meeting date.

• Carbon Footprint – We are planning to host a screening of the National Geographic movie, “From

Paris to Pittsburgh” this fall and also hold a workshop where you can learn how to calculate your

own carbon footprint and set goals for personal reduction.

• Recycling – What can and cannot be recycled in “single stream” municipal system, and what other

ways can you recycle and reduce waste AND reduce your carbon footprint? Sometime the next

month or two, we will host an engaging and informative speaker who will provide us with the inside

scoop on recycling in Connecticut.

• Composting – Recycling your food and some other wastes through home composting. How do you

do it (if you don’t already) and how can you do it better (if you already do)? We have someone lined

up to do this and will be setting a date in the near future.

• Green Fair – Opportunities to make the Green Fair “greener”. How can we reduce the

amount of leftovers hauled away in a dumpster post-fair? We’ll be supplying the Shepaug Art Dept

with interesting trinkets that can be used for art projects. And we have leads on a couple other

organizations who will take leftovers – and use them – like non-profits. We definitely need more

help with this for both tracking down organizations who want to benefit from our leftovers and

generating - and helping out implementing other creative ideas. Contact Karen if you can help in

any way.

• Fix It Café – New to Washington this fall, we are planning an event where volunteer experts show

you how – and help you to fix your own stuff, like small appliances, clothing, wooden and other

objects that just need a little TLC to avoid becoming waste – and to save you money! It is a global

movement. Look it up online. We need to recruit fixit experts in assorted areas. Contact Karen if

you know anyone you can ask.

• Water Conservation – What is the state of water in our world? And what can we do each day to

reduce our impact? We are currently looking for resources & and expert who can present on this

topic….

Green Team Planning Meeting - Thursday, May 6 at 6:30 pm

All are welcome to join us as we plan some upcoming events and activities.

Be a part of the action; be a part of the solution! Lend your voice, ideas and helping hands.

Just stop in or call ahead and let us know you’re coming. If you want to be aware of any last

minute changes to this meeting, please contact Karen in the church office. (860) 868-0569

Special Note to Members on Donation Drop-offs:

If you have book donations, please place them directly in the Choir Room downstairs in the Meeting House to save us from having to move them. If necessary, you can put them in the narthex (entry way to the church).

Other small donations can still go in the Green Fair storage room upstairs in the Parish House. Furniture can still go in the Judea Nursery rooms for now.

Also, please call our attention to any special donations suitable for the auctions so we can put them aside in a staging area.

Preparations for the Green Fair are underway. Michael Gorra and Scott Brady, Fair Co-Chairs, and

the rest of the team NEEDS YOUR HELP!

At this stage of the game we are looking for 2 things:

1) Time commitments and 2) STUFF!

What kind of time commitment? Well, anything you can give. Saying you are too busy is not

acceptable. Fun is essential. We all are busy but we must find the time for fun and to make the 2019

edition another great fair.

Some openings include:

Silent Auction – Co-Chair to help Ben Grinnell organize, setup and execute

After-Fair Management – Chair. There are a ton of resources but we need someone to

coordinate and see leftovers dispositioned and things go back to “normal”.

Publicity Support – A third person to help with promotion

Donation Pickup Help – Someone to help with truck “projects” or just willingness to be

occasionally available to do pick up if larger items or large loads.

What kind of stuff? Again, anything you can part with, for the most part. Garden items - furniture,

nice garden decorations, planters, garden tools in good condition, are always popular.· NICE: White

Elephant (Tag Sale)

!!!GREEN FAIR: July 13, 2019!!!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, we need items for:

· REALLY NICE: Silent and Live Auctions and · NICER: Boutique

Think: Sports events tix, vacation homes, large dinner experience,

celebrity meet and greet, show tickets, etc. Use your imagination!!!

It is easiest to list what we won’t take:

· We won’t take anything broken.

· We will take furniture but we won’t take any mattresses nor any upholstered furniture.

· We also don’t like electronics because they tend to be outdated and no one wants to buy

obsolete electronics. Exceptions might be something that has historic value as an antique.

And we don’t mean an 8 track player!

Items you are considering donating can be brought to the church during Karen’s hours. Donation

pickup is as volunteers are available. If the item is large and needs transportation or if you have a

question whether we will accept the item, please call the church office

(860-868-0569) or send an email to: [email protected]

Office Hours: (Thru June 20) Mon & Wed (Phone/email) 1– 5:30 pm; Tue/ Thu- 9 am - 1:30 pm

(After June 24th) Mon & Wed- 1:00 – 5:30 pm; Tue/ Thu- 9:00 am to 1:30 pm
