Several improvements are being made to your Club this spring. An expansion of the Club’s sprinkler system with some additional plant-ings is underway. Improvements to the second floor western balcony off the Lafayette room are also being made to better utilize this area. New light fixtures for the interior of the Club and outside poles are also being installed. The Athletic Center has received two new recum-bent bikes and a new rowing machine.

The Club’s staff is gearing up for a busy summer with many advance bookings and an influx of new members. Thank you for your sponsorships in these regards. Don’t forget to register your children early for all the youth activities. We have assembled an excellent staff this summer to oversee these programs.

Happy Mothers Day, Jim Grady, CCM

Help Us Get UpdatedWe are in the process of updating our computer system and ask that everyone try and stop by the Club to get a new photo taken. This will add one additional level of security to your account in all the departments of the Club. We recommend that all members of the family, including children, have their photos taken.

It will only take a few minutes and we will even let you smile! Please give us a call if you have any questions.

We are having a super spring; the weather has been great and now summer is knocking at the door of the NYCC. Jim and his staff are busy

bringing all of the outside venues to life for the busiest season at the Club –SUMMER.

May is a great month. The grounds around the Club come to life; outside activity is all around. The tennis courts are in full use, the sailing and keel boat races are every Friday night, the marina and boat ramps are abuzz, and the pool area is open.

The staff has the pool area open for use. The water is still a little cool and there are no life guards on duty, but the pool deck area is a great place to relax and enjoy a book while overlooking the pool and the Lafayette River. The pool will officially open on May 26th at the kickoff of Memorial Day festivities.

We are excited about the sailing program this summer. The new Sailing Committee is very energetic and looking for all young sailors. This year we have a new sailing coach (Sarah Ebrill) coming in from Ireland, a strong

staff of instructors, and a lot of sailing camp participants already signed up. Read more about Sarah in this issue of the Ship and Shore.

Memorial Day Weekend is fast approaching. The Entertainment Committee and the staff have put together a traditional and festive weekend. The weekend is full of events and officially kicks off the season. The festivities start Friday night with a Mixed Double Social at Tennis, continue through Saturday around the pool and explode on Sunday with the annual boat parade, a family style carnival to include pony rides, face painting, and a moon bounce. Later Sunday, the Flag Raising Ceremony will take place, a dinner buffet is planned and the evening ends to the music of “Powerplay”. We hope that everybody can come out and enjoy the weekend.

The membership drive is going great. We have considerable interest and we have welcomed over 17 new families into the Club during April. We look to have another large group in May and throughout the summer. Please welcome these new members when you see them around the Club.

Respectfully Submitted, Billy Dashiell

Setting Sail for NorfolkSarah Ebrill will be joining us from Ireland as the new director of the Junior Sailing Camp. Here’s her “life in a nutshell,” she said via an e-mail from Dublin, where she’s finishing up earning a degree in Zoology at Trinity College.

Like most of the youngsters she will be teaching this summer, Sarah, soon to be 23, grew up in a junior program in her hometown of Wexford, which is in southeast Ireland, about 90 miles from Dublin.

“My sailing club is on the estuary of the river Slaney, where there are some really beautiful beaches,” she wrote. “I started sailing at about age 9 and graduated to club racing and progressed to regional, national and international events.”

Her first boat was a “topper dinghy,” which Sarah described as “like a small plastic laser, very popular in Ireland and the UK as an alternative to optis.” She competed in the Radial youth worlds in the Netherlands in 2007.

As a collegian, Sarah has competed on a varsity level, racing fireflies, small double handed dinghies.

Sarah is no stranger to the States. This will be her fourth summer teaching here. Previously, she has taught in Boothbay, Maine, Long Island and Clearlake, Texas. This will be her first time in the South.

“I have been as far south as Dulles Airport,”

she said in her e-mail. “I am excited to see more of Virginia and maybe even a bit further afield.”

She will be very happy if the Mexican food in Norfolk is half as good as it is in Texas.

“We don’t get very good Tex-Mex here (in Ireland). I will, however, be bringing my own stash of chocolate as, no offense, but American chocolate is terrible.”

Sarah’s teaching philosophy is to create a balance between fun, safety and improving the skills of sailors of all levels of experience.

“I am looking forward to meeting the instructors, children and their parents and want the program to be a positive experience for everyone.”

Sarah arrives in Norfolk June 16. Camp begins the 25th. If anyone would like to host Sarah during part or all of her stay, please contact the Club. You will be talking with a brogue by the time the summer is over.

We’re ConnectedThere’s hardly a big city in the U.S. where we don’t have a reciprocal club. And the list keeps growing. The Yale Club of New York City is our newest addition.

With its more than 11,000 members, the Yale Club NYC is the world’s largest private club. Built in 1915, the club is 22 stories and offers 138 guest rooms. It has everything, including a barber shop. Located in mid-town, it is a short walk from Grand Central Station. The club describes itself as “blending traditional elegance with contemporary amenities.” For more info, go to www.yaleclubnyc.org.

a HitRob and Lisa Lain and their daughters highly recommend a stay at the Royal Scots Club. The historic club was our NYCC members’ headquarters during their one-week spring break vacation in Edinburgh. They had a great time and Rob didn’t have to wear a kilt to dinner. The RSC is one of our many reciprocal clubs.

“Over the years,” wrote Rob, recounting the family stay, “the RSC has shifted its focus from being a traditional British-style membership club and is now more a boutique hotel and restaurant catering to private parties, weddings and other social events.”

The food (vegetable curry and sticky toffee pudding were two favorites), ambiance and staff ’s attentiveness received high grades from mom and dad and Taylor, 18, and Hailey, 16. Reciprocal members receive preferred room rates, room selection and dining privileges.

The Lains package included three dinners, daily breakfasts and Wi-Fi access. There is no pool or fitness center.

The club is located in the New Town part of the city (“New” Rob noted, “is anything built in the 1700s”) and in walking distance of many sightseeing musts. A concierge in the main lobby is waiting to help you explore the city.

“We couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay,” concluded Rob. “The rooms were clean and comfortable and the ambiance beats the sterile chain hotel experience hands down.”

Like Mother, Like DaughtersNow that they are moms of their own, Pat Yeiser’s daughters find themselves sounding a lot like dear old mom.

“More and more all the time,’ said Heather Wentworth, the oldest of Pat’s four children. “I guess we’re raising our children just like we were.”

That means teaching Jack (12) and Emma (10), Heather’s kids, and Ian (12) Maddie (10) and Camden (7), Lisa Edwards-Soblotne’s to be respectful of all people, to never lie and to be there for others.

And like Pat, our Ship & Shore Mother of the Year, the girls are raising a family while working full time and still never missing a school production or any athletic events. Heather is an emergency room doctor and Lisa owns and manages rental properties.

“We couldn’t have had a better role model for a mother,” said Lisa. “We are fortunate. We learned by example.”

Pat Yeiser became a mom when she was 24, with the birth of Heather. But she had plenty of insight into what motherhood held as the oldest of nine children.

“I did a lot of baby sitting,” she said. Pat and Frank, who died 17 years ago, had four children. In addition to the girls, they raised two boys, Graham, 23 and Forest, 20. She has been married to Don Walker the last 10 years.

“I really didn’t think about it being hard,” said Pat, who recently retired from a second career in real estate. “You just kind of do it. You didn’t think about what you didn’t have.”

Back then, moms didn’t have the help they have today, such as day care, microwaves to heat dinner in minutes, the array of take-out places we have today and Sesame Street on TV.

“Mom wasn’t so much of a disciplinarian,” said Heather. “But she established very clear boundaries that you had better not cross.”

Pat, Heather and Lisa still talk nearly every day on the phone and see each other several times a week at the Fitness Center, where Pat swims and the girls work out with a trainer.

“We are always asking her for advice,” said Lisa. “Anything from kids to finances. She knows everything.”

The three, who live within five miles of each other, can’t go more than a few weeks without a “girls’ outing” to a restaurant or to see a play.

Lisa and Heather often talk about one day moving to an island and enjoying the sun and surf full-time.

“Mom would have to come with us‘” said Heather. “We couldn’t be apart from her.”

Welcome Home ChrisChristopher Brown was welcomed home earlier this year and a reception was held in his honor in March at the Club. The folks who have been a part of Operation LSC were here to greet Chris. Operation LSC (Love and Support for Chris) prepared boxes of themed goodies that were sent to his unit each month. YaChtingBe Safe from Stem

to SternThe United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct voluntary boat inspections at the club, April 28.

The USCG Aux will inspect your boat’s safety gear and apply a sticker indicating you are a “safe boater.” The sticker is very useful when underway. In most instances, when the Coast Guard spots the sticker, it knows you are a responsible boater and waves you on.

If anything is not functioning properly or lacking, the USCG will provide a list of items that need to be corrected and will come back and re-inspect your boat. At no time will the USCG Auxiliary issue a report or citation. So, this is a win-win situation

The Shakedown cruise to the Hampton Yacht Club, Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20 is a good time to check out your boat and get ready for longer adventures. We have reciprocal arrangements so the overnight stay at HYC is FREE.

The Northern Neck is the next port-of-call, June 22-24. On Friday night, we’ll stay at Matthews Yacht Club and anchor off the Eastern Branch of the Corrotoman River the following night. There are no overnight charges at either destination.

A fall cruise is slated for Sept. 28-30 to Smithfield Station, where Smithfield will be celebrating the annual “Aiken’s and Friends Family Fest.” Mike Aiken’s breezy sound and lyrics are often compared to Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney. The trip is a joint venture with Indian Creek Yacht Club.

Our final cruise is to Cape Charles, Oct. 19-21, where shopping and golf courses beckon. As with all our cruises, if you can make it for only one night, come anyway. Contact a member of the Yachting Committee for more info.

Cruise Season Ready to Launch

The Race Is OnWe have ordered up six beautiful nights with a perfect breeze coming off the Lafayette River for the Friday Evening Spring Race Series, which starts April 27.

The weatherman might not cooperate, but we can promise some spirited competition. And if past history is any indication, some great finishes.

Norfolk OpSail Will Outshine the Big AppleGuest speaker Hank Moseley of Norfolk Festevents told attendees at the annual Spring Yachting Committee Dinner that OpSail2012 is going to be bigger – and better – than ever.

This June’s event will be the biggest Norfolk OpSail ever, according to Moseley, Virginia Operations Manager for the event and a well known maritime expert.

Hank is the former captain of the schooner Virginia and was the maritime consultant for the movie “Master and Commander.”

Featuring the 370-foot Spanish schooner Juan Sebastian d’Elcano and ships representing 15 countries, our OpSail will be a bigger spectacle than even New York City’s version. Take that, Big Apple.

Many NYCC boaters plan on docking at Waterside during the celebration.

The club also plans to host vessels from other Chesapeake Bay yacht clubs, and has extended invitations to many of these clubs to visit and dock at our marina during OpSail and Harborfest.

For those traveling by land, bus service will be available from NYCC to the many downtown

venues of activities, including re-enactments of War of 1812 engagements.

The celebration kicks off Wednesday, June 6, with a Sea and Air Parade, including an International fleet of naval vessels as well as waterborne and air assets from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, Army Corps of Engineers and other government and private organizations.

The Parade of Tall Ships, including the Juan Sebastian d’Elcano, is Friday, June 8. The Parade of Sail begins at 7 a.m. The fleet will parade from the Lynnhaven Roads anchorage, past Fort Monroe and eventually through Hampton Roads and up the Elizabeth River to downtown Norfolk.

The final parade of sail is Tuesday, June 12, as the fleet of tall ships proceeds toward the next port of call in Baltimore. Recreational boaters, yacht clubs and charter vessels are encouraged to participate in the parade by sailing alongside the fleet as it makes its way north. This is a great opportunity, said Moseley, to view the tall ships in their natural environment at sea.

Visit the OpSail 2012 website at www.opsail2012virginia.com to learn more.

The six-race series ends June 1. Points from both the Spring and Fall series are combined to determine the overall winners for the year.Races start at 6 p.m. with a party at the Dock House following.

If interested in racing or joining a crew, contact Dick Waters at [email protected] or 757-489-0921. You can also get in touch with any member of the Yachting Committee.

NYCC will join forces with thousands of other volunteers from Hampton Roads on Clean the Bay Day, Saturday, June 2, to remove tons of trash and litter from Chesapeake Bay shorelines.

NYCC has been a strong participant in the program over the last several years, collecting nearly two tons of debris annually from the Lafayette River. With the help of some 115,000 volunteers, more than 2,700 tons of refuse have been removed from local waters.

Clean the Bay Day is sponsored by the City of Norfolk, Hampton Roads Sanitation District and environmental organizations such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Elizabeth River Project.

The goal is to restore the Lafayette River and make it safe for fishing and swimming by 2014.

NYCC members have an opportunity to contribute toward that goal. So, come on out from 9 a.m. to noon. You’ll be helping to do a “ton” of good.

If you and your family would rather bag trash from your own neighborhood shoreline, we can arrange to pick up your bags and weigh them at the club and add them to our total.Call Bob Hume at 288-9985 to volunteer or for more info.

Clean the Bay Day Needs You

Chris Noland credits “dumb luck” for winning the club’s NCAA basketball pool.

“If I had a strategy at all, it was picking against Duke and North Carolina,” said Chris, who beat some 60 others to win $150 worth of food and beverage credit.

“I guess I’ll be buying my friends a few drinks,” said Chris, when asked what he’ll do with his winnings.

Hugh McCrory was runner-up and recipient of $100 in food and beverages. Pat Kenney, third, won $50 and Pierce Tyler and Christine Boswick, fourth and fifth, each received $25. A client strategist with a wealth management firm, Chris is hardly a hoop maniac.

“I didn’t go to a big Division I school with a basketball tradition,” said Noland who graduated from Washington & Lee. “So I don’t have a favorite team. I usually don’t turn on college basketball until the tournament. I didn’t know a whole lot when I filled out my brackets. I just don’t like Duke or UNC.”

Even though Kansas (KU) didn’t beat Kentucky (UK) in the final as he predicted, it all turned out OK for Chris who had a big enough lead going into the championship game, thanks to some astute early-round picks.

This was the second time Chris has cashed in on his lack of basketball knowledge. Several years ago, he won his office pool.

“More dumb luck,” said Chris, who is 35, single and lives in Norfolk. He has been an NYCC member for five years.

We can only imagine how good he’d be if there were NCAA pools in his favorite sport – lacrosse.

“Now that’s a game I know something about,” he said.

Chris says if there is a pool next year, he will be back to defend his title. That is not good news for Duke or UNC.

The annual kickoff to the junior tennis season at Norfolk Yacht was another great success as close to 40 kids came out to hit balls with the NYCC Pros and the Coaches and Players from the ODU Women’s Tennis Team. The Monarch Lady Netters, fresh off handing the Naval Academy only their second defeat on the season, helped the Pros and Coaches give instruction and hit balls with NYCC kids ranging in age from 4 to 16.

Many thanks to Head Coach Dom Manilla and Associate Head Coach Toni Neykova.

Here’s your chance to payback Mom for all those things she does – driving kids to school and practice, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning. We could go on and on and…

We are offering a special Mother’s Day Massage Package. Mothers receive a 60 or 90-minute session, which includes a choice of a 30-minute body scrub and the addition of heated stones.

The hour-package is just $70 and the 90-minute pampering is $95. You can also purchase a gift certificate for all the moms in your life.

Aqua Man and Aqua Woman

M is for Mom and Massage

We have two great trainers – Robert Arbogast and Cathy Orletsky – who specialize in aqua therapy and training.

Water is more than just for drinking during a workout. It’s a great way to get a full body workout whether you are rehabbing from an injury, have some mobility or joint issues or are already fit and want to take it to the next level.

It’s a workout you can “immerse” yourself in. So, jump in.

Robert, who has been teaching water fitness classes since 2008, will hold classes on Monday and Wednesday, 4:15-5:15 p.m., and is available for private training from 1-4 p.m. on the same days.

A certified aquatics instructor who has been teaching water exercise for 14 years, Cathy teaches classes on Tuesday and Thursdays, 9-10 a.m. and early birds can train with Cathy from 6-9 a.m.

In the last few years, both instructors have seen aqua classes attracting a wide range of

Bikini Bottomsages and fitness levels.

“While the traditional view about water fitness still holds, that it is a great format for people who need less impact on their joints, it is also a great way for a workout enthusiast to cross train. An individual workout can be tailored to meet almost any goal.

Robert’s success with clients have ranged from a 92-year-old man

seeking to improve his balance and strength to a woman in her 20s with a goal of losing weight and building endurance to complete the Shamrock Half Marathon.

Cathy’s aqua workouts vary from low intensity, shallow water to high intensity, deep water ones.

“I instantly fell in love with the environment and freedom of movement it offers people,” said Cathy, whose has been a presenter at numerous conferences and universities on the current trends of aquatic exercise. “It’s a totally different world of exercise that differs from land workouts.”

Cathy’s favorite “success” story is about Lou, a woman suffering from severe arthritis, who discovered she didn’t need her walker when she was exercising in the pool. “I’m free!!” she screamed in delight.

Says Cathy, “Aquatic fitness can benefit everyone,”

Try it and find out for yourself.

Join us on Thursdays at 8 a.m. for this exhilarating, easy to follow Latin-inspired dance fitness party. You’ll have fun and burn a lot of calories. Instructor Cinnamon Mancini will have you moving to the beat.

Summer is on the way and that means its time to get in “bikini shape.”

Our Weekend Warrior classes will be offered on Saturdays in May (the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th) at 10 a.m. and will have you working your butt off, literally.

The focus will be on cardio drills, legs, glutes and core work to help tone, length and strengthen your bikini bottom before it’s time to break out the swim suit. Cost is $5 per class.

Parents Night OutPNO is back by popular demand this summer. Parents can enjoy the pool, a quiet dinner at the Deck, an evening of tennis or a group exercise class while the kids are safely having a blast of their own right here at NYCC.

Special evening child care will be available from 5:30-8:30 p.m. We’ll let you know the

specific dates soon. Sign ups are required as space is limited and it’s always a sell out.

Each month we’ll have special themes for the kids. May will feature “Inside Out and Backwards Day. June will be “America the Beautiful” month. July is ‘Don’t BUG Me” and August is “Teddy Bear Picnic.”

Tan, Don’t BurnBall caps, visors, sun block and sunglass traps are the best defense against the harmful rays of the sun. NYCC’s Retail Shop carries a full variety of caps and visors to fit everyone, and sunglass straps to make sure you never lose your shades. Stop in. We’re open.
