Sixth Sunday of Easter Theme: Loving
We use the word LOVE so often that we are in great danger of losing its meaning.
What we mean, very often, is that something is pleasant or appealing to us; or, it is
nice and we like it. It may be that something suits us, and we say: “I love it.” Some-
thing else makes us happy, again we say: “I love it.” Somebody may really love
someone else, true, but sometimes it’s simply being a passing attraction.
Our readings for this Sunday are filled with love talk. I would like to pose a question
for reflection. Is there any real difference between the love lived and extoled by Jesus
and those brands of love bantered about on television and in magazines? The answer
is a resounding “YES.” Hence, it is very important that nature of Christian love is
clear to us. For if Jesus tells us that it is by love that our discipleship is known, then
we need to make sure we know what love is. If loving means that we are born of God
and know God, then we had better know how to love one another.
What is the definition of Christian Love? First of all, Christian love is not found in a
collection of word but in the life lived by Jesus of Nazareth whom we proclaim to be
the Christ. This love was accepting, total, open, non-judgmental and forgiving.
Above all, the love of Jesus was pure and demanding. Yes, demanding. Contrary to
our no strings, no demands approach of today. Love means both not condemning and
not sinning any more.

Sexto Domingo de Pascua Tema: Amoroso
Usamos la palabra AMOR tan a menudo que corremos el gran peligro de perder su
significado. Lo que queremos decir, muy a menudo, es que algo es agradable o atrac-
tivo para nosotros; o, es lindo y nos gusta. Puede ser que algo nos convenga, y deci-
mos: "Me encanta". Algo más nos hace felices, nuevamente decimos: "Me encanta".
Alguien realmente puede amar a otra persona, es cierto, pero a veces es simplemente
una atracción pasajera.
Nuestras lecturas para este domingo están llenas de charlas de amor. Me gustaría
plantear una pregunta para la reflexión. ¿Hay alguna diferencia real entre el amor
vivido y exaltado por Jesús y esas marcas de amor bromeadas en la televisión y en las
revistas? La respuesta es un sí rotundo". Por lo tanto, es muy importante que la natu-
raleza del amor cristiano sea clara para nosotros. Porque si Jesús nos dice que es por
amor que nuestro discipulado es conocido, entonces debemos asegurarnos de saber
qué es el amor. Si amar significa que nacemos de Dios y conocemos a Dios, entonces
debemos saber cómo amarnos unos a otros.
¿Cuál es la definición de amor cristiano? En primer lugar, el amor cristiano no se
encuentra en una colección de palabras, sino en la vida vivida por Jesús de Nazaret, a
quien proclamamos ser el Cristo. Este amor era aceptable, total, abierto, sin prejuicios
y perdonador. Sobre todo, el amor de Jesús era puro y exigente. Sí, exigente. Contra-
rio a nuestro enfoque sin cadenas, sin demandas de hoy. El amor significa no conde-
nar ni pecar más.

nueva forma no es contraria a nuestra naturaleza sino que es una
perfección de nuestra humanidad. El amor de Jesús pone de ma-
nifiesto todos los aspectos ocultos y comprensivos de nuestras
habilidades para amar. Aquellos que entraron en contacto con
Jesús nunca fueron dejados iguales. Algunos se fueron tristes
cuando escucharon las demandas del amor. Otros se llenaron de
alegría por las buenas noticias que se les ofrecieron. Nadie pue-
de ser indiferente.
El amor que Jesús vive y espera es uno que ayuda a fomentar
una nueva relación. "Ya no hablo de ustedes como esclavos,
porque un esclavo no sabe de qué se trata su amo. En cambio,
los llamo amigos, ya que les he hecho conocer todo lo que es-
cuché de parte de mi Padre. "El amor lo impulsa a un nivel más
profundo de intimidad y a compartir el conocimiento. Este inter-
cambio de conocimiento se trata del amor del Padre por todos
sus hijos. Y Jesús es la prueba y expresión definitiva de ese
amor.
¿Cómo se expresa este amor? Es en este punto que experimenta-
mos la gran diferencia entre el amor cristiano y lo que pasa por
lo real. La máxima expresión del amor de Jesús por nosotros es
la cruz. La cruz es "el amor más grande" que mueve a Jesús a
dar libremente su vida por la comunidad de fe. El amor es exi-
gente Y del ejemplo de Jesús vemos que bien podría exigir el
sacrificio supremo. Hay un realismo sobre el amor que evita que
caiga en el romanticismo o el sentimentalismo. El amor cristiano
no tiene en cuenta la gracia barata. "El amor de Dios se reveló
en medio de nosotros de esta manera: él envió a su único Hijo al
mundo para que podamos tener vida a través de él ... Él nos amó
y ha enviado a su Hijo como una ofrenda por nuestros pecados".
En el análisis final, el amor cristiano produce en nuestros cora-
zones una profunda sensación de alegría. La alegría no es un
placer que pasa rápidamente o con el que nos aburrimos. La
alegría dada por el amor de Jesús es duradera. Esta alegría es
una señal y un anticipo del reino de Dios. Al amar a Dios y unos
a otros a imitación de Jesús, ya estamos sacando el telón de la
vejez y levantando el telón en la nueva era, cuando lo vemos tal
como es. Gracias, Padre, por ser un Dios amoroso y misericor-
dioso. Gracias porque nos has ofrecido el perdón y el regalo de
una nueva vida en ti. Gracias porque tu amor está erecto, nunca
falla, y que nada puede separarnos de tu amor.

(Continued from page 1) Such a love challenges one to live in a totally new way. This
new way is not contrary to our nature but is a perfection of
our humanity. Jesus’ love brings out all the hidden and un-
derstanding aspects of our abilities to love. Those who came
into contact with Jesus were never left the same. Some went
away sad when heard the demands of love. Others were
filled with joy at the good news offered to them. No one
could be indifferent.
The love which Jesus lives and expects is one which helps
foster new relationship. “I no longer speak of you as slaves,
for a slave does not know what his master is about. Instead, I
call you friends, since I have made known to you all that I
heard from my Father.” Love urges one on to a deeper level
of intimacy and the sharing of knowledge. This sharing of
knowledge is about the Father’s love for all his children.
And Jesus is the ultimate proof and expression of that love.
How is this love expressed? It is at this point that we experi-
ence the great difference between Christian love and that
which passes for the real thing. The ultimate expression of
Jesus’ love for us is the cross. The cross is “the greater love”
which moves Jesus to freely lay down his life for the com-
munity of faith. Love is demanding. And from the example
of Jesus we see that it might well demand the supreme sacri-
fice. There is a realism about love which keep it from falling
into romanticism or sentimentality. Christian love makes no
allowance for cheap grace. “God’s love was revealed in our
midst in this way: he sent his only Son to the world that we
might have life through him… He has loved us and has sent
his Son as an offering for our sins.”
In the final analysis, Christian love produces in our hearts a
profound sense of Joy. Joy is not a pleasure which quickly
passes or with which we become bored. The joy given by
Jesus’ love is lasting. This joy is a sign and foretaste of the
kingdom of God. By loving God and one another in imita-
tion of Jesus, we are already drawing the curtain on the old
age and raising the curtain on the new age, when we see him
as he is. Thank you, Father, for being a loving and gracious
God. Thank you that you have offered us forgiveness and the
gift of new life in you. Thank you that your love is erect, it
never fails, and that nothing can separate us from your love.

day.
The Rosary is a prayer dedicated to Mary. When we pray the rosary we meditate on the principal events or mys-teries in the history of our salvation. Also you may read and meditate on Mary’s prayer, the Magnificat (Luke 1: 46-55). Try reading the Magnificat each day. A different word or phrase may touch your heart every time.
