Special Parish Christmas Electronic Giving Opportunity — An
annual financial gift to the parish at Christmas is deeply personal and
prayerful. To provide another way to give and make it easier for
parishioners who wish to offer a Christmas gift to our parish, the
Archdiocese of Dubuque has set up a special page on its website to
give your Christmas gift via credit or debit card. Your gift will be given
directly to our parish without any administrative or credit card fees. So,
100% of your gift comes to us, designated as your Christmas gift to the
parish. Go to www.dbqarch.org/parishChristmas to make a one-time
gift. The site will remain open through Epiphany, January 3, 2021.
Thank you for considering a Christmas gift to our parish this year.
ONLY A Few Days Remain! There is still just enough time to
make an online gift the Our Faith STO in 2020, but hurry!
Funds contributed in 2020 will provide need-based assistance to
families to attend a Catholic School in the Archdiocese of
Dubuque during the 2021-22 school year. But we need your help
to reach our goal. All gifts will reduce your Iowa Income Tax by
65% of your gift, regardless of the size of the gift. And all gifts
qualify as a charitable contribution for federal income taxes.
When the clock strikes midnight on December 31, this
opportunity for tax year 2020 will be gone. Please visit
www.ourfaithsto.org or call the Archdiocese of Dubuque at 800-
876-3546 ext. 219 to learn more or have questions about this
fantastic program.

Dear Parishioners,
I write this bulletin article before Christmas with a little bit of
trepidation. How is the celebration of Christmas going to happen? What
will we do if the crowd overflows? Whatever happens, we can say: “we
tried!”
“We tried!” doesn’t sound very appealing or professional. You certainly
wouldn’t want to hear that from your surgeon after a routine procedure.
We are a culture built upon assurances and controls. Yet, how often do
“assurances and controls’ define our lives? Can we create a space in our
lives where we can say “we tried” and say it with joy?
This is part of the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Family. There is
an acknowledgement of the messiness of life within a family. Friends of
mine talk about how they were shocked by their third child. As babies, the
first two children slept through the night, ate well, and were “really easy
babies.” As the father said, “We looked at our friends and thought, “wow,
we are really good parents.” Then, the third child. Later in years, the
father says, sort of jokingly, “Well he is still alive but he made us question
our parenting skills.”
The joy of children is that they can embarrass their parents so well and
they give us permission to say, “We tried” with some joy.
In our Feast today, we are reminded that this is not only a joyful reality
but a Holy one as well: The Holy Family.
Many realities have been redefined in 2020 but the centrality of the call
to be a holy family has not. We find holiness not through assurances and
controls but by modelling ourselves after the Holy Family.
As you are pondering what New Year resolutions you may have, I
noticed a few things the Holy Family did that might help shape that list.
1. They went up to the Temple to “present [Jesus] to the Lord.” (Luke
2:23). How do you present yourself to the Lord? How often do you call
upon the Lord in your daily life? How could you increase calling upon the
Lord in your life?
2. Simeon and Anna were wise spiritual and religious people who
recognized the presence of Jesus. They recognized him as “your
salvation” (Luke 2:30). Do you have “wise religious and spiritual people”
in your lives who can recognize God’s presence? Do you cultivate
conversations about faith? How would you go about doing that?
Can I give you assurances that doing these two things will change your
life for the better and put some good controls into your life? Nope!
Sometimes bringing God and wise religious and spiritual people in your
life can really shake things up. It is a decision that we have to each
individually make: Am I going to exist with assurances and controls or am
I going to live with “I tried”?
In the nature of God, His act of love was not given through assurances
and controls. He sent his son as a child who could be freely accepted only
in love. He showed us a Holy Family who freely accepted this child called
love and invites us to do the same. God tried. How do we respond?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
