It’s hard to believe that we are down to a few days before the 16-17 school year is behind us. Of course that brings many “End of the Year” events. The biggest of all the events is graduation. Tuesday, June 13th at 1:00 p.m. at the Lawlor Events Center we will gather to recognize the many accomplishments of the Class of 2017. Parents of Seniors are asked to review the guidelines in this article with their son or daughter. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the school. I will also take another opportunity to remind seniors that the mandatory practice for all graduates who wish to participate in the ceremony will be held Tuesday, June 13th, at 11:00 a.m. at Lawlor Events Center. Graduates will not leave Lawlor between practice and the graduation ceremony. Seniors, make sure to get your Great Grizzly Award information completed. These Seniors will be recognized at the senior assembly and memorialized on the school front entry wall with their name on the banner that will be hung on our walls for years to come! (see the application on page 8 of this edition of the Grizzly Growl.) I would like to address all parents and students, but Seniors and parents of Seniors should pay close attention. “Senior pranks” have become increasingly disruptive to the educational process and increasingly excessive in the damage done to the school and/or school property. Students involved in these activities will be denied the right to participate in graduation
exercises. I would encourage you to enjoy the end of the year and the end of your high school career and do so in a respectful and responsible manner. As a reminder, 2017-2018 school year will begin August 7th. Please review the information in this Grizz Growl for further details about registration for next school year. Schedule pick up is set for July 25th & 26th. With the end of the year in sight, please encourage your students to finish the year strong. The final semester grade is the grade that will be placed on students’ permanent transcript, so focusing during the final weeks of school is important. Finally, I would like to personally thank all parents, students, staff, and community members associated with Galena High School for making this a great year for the Grizzlies. Your continued efforts and support are what makes Galena a great place for students. And finally, finally, a special thanks to PTO president Julina Colt for her ongoing efforts to support our school and co-editors of the Grizz Growl, Ardis Parmer and Allison Combs for putting together the best parent newsletter in town!

Hi Galena Families,
The Teacher Appreciation Committee will be hosting their annual teachers' luncheon and gift card raffle on June 8th (which, believe it or not, is quickly approaching!). The luncheon and raffle are a wonderful way to show the Galena staff how much we, the parents, appreciate the time and effort put into the educational experience of our children. The teachers LOVE this event and greatly look forward to it each year. Galena has over 100 staff members. So in order to make this a successful raffle, we will need a large number of gift cards from any store and smaller increments will insure that everyone is a winner. As such, we are asking Galena parents to please consider uplifting and thanking your student's teachers by donating gift cards for the raffle. All card donations can be given to Mrs. Williams at the front office (Mr. Brown's secretary).

Galena 5-STAR Boosters 2017-2018 Parent Volunteer Form
The Galena 5-Star Boosters funds a number of school events and projects during the course of the school year. None of these can be done without YOUR help. Please take this opportunity to help us help our school, our students and our teachers by checking all that interest you. The Committee chairs will contact you to participate.
___ General Volunteer - Check here if you would be available to help out with various events throughout the year, ie: Registration, Freshman Orientation Night.
___ Hospitality Committee - Provides refreshments for 5-6 evening activities.
___ Scholarship Fundraising Committee – Helps organize an annual event to fund our senior scholarships.

CELEBRATION
Attention Seniors and Juniors graduating early!!! Graduation is just around the corner and we want to make sure it is a safe night for all. Come celebrate with us on a cruise with Lake
Tahoe Cruises.
Seniors will leave after graduation ceremonies (June 13) from Galena High School Parking Lot (approximately 9:30pm),
on chartered buses, which will transport to South Lake Tahoe.
Upon arrival, they will board the M.S. Dixie for a midnight Dinner/Dance Cruise.
Cost for this event is $135.00 which includes transportation, an all-you-can-eat buffet, unlimited soft drinks, dessert,
entertaining DJ, karaoke, and a last chance to spend time with fellow classmates cruising Lake Tahoe!
The buses will leave the M.S. Dixie at approximately 2:30 a.m. and return to Galena High School, arriving approximately 4:00 a.m.

Senior Cap & Gowns will be handed out on Thursday, May 25th. Make sure you have paid all fees that are due.
Graduation is on Tuesday, June 13th @ 1:00pm at Lawlor Event Center. (Mandatory Practice begins at 11:00am that day.)
After the graduation ceremony, parents meet your students in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union building.

Seniors wanting to go on Safe N Sober Cruise: May 13th Deadline The deadline for registering for this trip is fast approaching. We have not yet met the minimum requirement of attendees for this trip to proceed. So if you are thinking about going on this trip don’t wait until the last minute to register. If we don’t meet the minimum requirement we will be forced to cancel the trip. So don’t miss the boat & sign-up today! (See flyer on page 5.) SENIOR CLASS AWARDS NIGHT is scheduled for Tuesday, May 30th, at the Atlantis and is an invitation-only event. At this ceremony, we will announce all Academic Letter Award recipients, Community Service Letter Awards, scholarship offers students notified us of (these can come from multiple colleges regardless of where student will attend), local scholarships
received (that we receive notification of), and the Galena Scholarships will be announced for those in attendance. The
SENIOR CLASS “MOVING ON” BANNER must be COMPLETED by Thursday, May 25, it will be used at the Senior Awards Night ceremony above the stage. Seniors: Finish your squares ASAP on your own time.

End of Course Exams: The End of Course Exams (EOC) is the exit exam for the graduation requirement. All 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students must pass the aligned courses for the four exams for the EOC’s. Listed below is the EOC and the aligned courses.
Math 1 – focus on Algebra I content – Aligned course Algebra 1 or Foundations in Algebra 1
Math II – focus on Geometry content – Aligned course Geometry, Foundations in Geometry, or Formal Geometry
ELA 1 – focus on Reading Comprehension (10th grade) - Aligned course English 3-4 or Honors English 3-4
ELA II – focus on writing (10th grade) - Aligned course English 3-4 or Honors English 3-4
Life Science – (9th grade) – Biology All 9th and 10th grade students must also pass the EOC’s for each exam. All 9th graders will also have to pass the EOC Life Science exam. All 10th grade students are required to take the Nevada Science Exam. (last year this test will be given) Below is the EOC testing schedule. *11/12th graders will take any of the EOC’s they have not participated as of yet. All EOC exams are administered online. In administering the test in a shorter period of time, Galena is trying to have as little impact on the students missing instructional time in preparation for their AP and final exams.

Advanced Placement: AP Exams are fast approaching. If you have not paid your $95.00 exam fee (per course), please pay your fees to our Galena Bookkeeper. If your student is taking an Advanced Placement course, an exam fee is required. Please make payments by March 18, 2017. AP exams will be start on May, 1, 2017 and run through May 12, 2017. (See AP testing schedule below)

Finals: As the school year winds down, we’ve got
several important events leading up to the prior to the
Class of 2016 Graduation Night. For seniors, there will
be the senior awards night on May 31st, finals starting
on June 6th with 7th period and finishing on June 9th,
with seniors last high school report cards being mailed
out on June 21, 2017.
Final Exam Schedule: As a reminder, per district and
school policy, final exams cannot be given early. If you
are going to miss a final make arrangements with your
counselor or Mrs. Diggs the registrar for a make-up date
and time after that final has been administered. Finals
can be made up during summer office hours or three
weeks into the Fall semester of the 2017-18 school year.

Galena Updates By David Hawley, Dean of Students
Tardiness Students are allowed four "free" tardies each semester before receiving a consequence, which all students started back at zero at the beginning of the second semester. The Swipe program here at Galena notifies the students of how many tardies they have after they swipe their ID. We are in the fourth quarter of school so please encourage your students to avoid being late to school and class.
Truancy Please inform the attendance office by calling or sending a note if your student has an appointment during the day or will be missing several periods. Students who have unexcused absences are running the risk of the absence changing to a truancy. Students receive reflection activities (lunch detention), school beautification (after school), and truancy letters (whole day 3r d letter results in being cited from the department of juvenile services)
Dress Code We are arriving into our warm months and students are beginning to wear Spring and Summer clothing. Dresses,
skirts, and shorts need to be no shorter than the middle of the thigh and the shoulders, backs, and stomachs all need to be covered completely. Also, a reminder that there can be no tears in their pants/shorts above the middle of the thigh. Our administration team will continue to enforce our dress code policy. Please look over your student's attire in the mornings before they leave for school. A violation of our dress code will result in changing into PE clothes if they do not have other clothes to change into. Consequences follow after the first formal warning.
School Safety and Secret Witness Our administration team and school staff are working hard to keep our students safe at Galena High School. Remind your child that Secret Witness offers monetary rewards for reporting and if they see anything suspicious that one should report that information. If at any time a student feels they have witnessed or heard of anything that shouldn't be occurring on school campus, they can make a Secret Witness tip without anyone knowing their identity. The Secret Witness phone number is (775) 329-6666. Students can also text the tip to 274637 then enter Tip725 with their message. With over 1400 students on the campus, we all need to work together to keep our students and staff safe.

Underclass Awards Night: This year’s Underclass Awards night is on Wednesday, May 17th at 6:30 pm. This night is meant to recognize student achievement for current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Your student will be receiving an invitation if he/she is being recognized at this event. Please be sure to check your mail for a formal invitation and join us in celebrating their academic accomplishments. Senior Awards Night: This year’s Senior Awards night is on Tuesday, May 30th at 7:00 pm. This night is meant to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors. Please join us at the Atlantis. End of School Year: It is hard to believe we have already reached the fourth quarter of this academic year. This is a timely reminder to
all, that students must follow sound study habits as we come to the end of the year semester final exams. I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Senior class the very best for a happy and successful future. I am very much looking forward to seeing you walk across the stage during Graduation! I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the students, staff, and Galena families for making this a great year. I continue to learn a tremendous amount from all of you and look forward to serving all of our grizzlies to the best of my ability. A list of fees will be mailed out during the summer. You MAY pay your initial fees prior to schedule pick up to alleviate standing in line. Initial fees need to be paid before schedules are distributed. These fees include ID card, planner, English Vocabulary Workbook, etc. You may pay “Class fees” once school starts.
First day of school for the 2017-18 school year is Monday, August 7th. Be sure to mark your calendars.

If you do not have internet access at home, all WCSD schools have a computer kiosk for you to use or you may access the link at any public library.

Senior Class Notes Mandy Campbell, Senior
Below you will find important information for seniors. GRADUATION CAPS AND GOWNS will be distributed at the Senior Luncheon currently scheduled for Thursday, May 25. Students who have fines with Galena’s library or Galena fees (to bookkeeper), will NOT be allowed to pick up cap and gown on this date. Students who have a pending or incomplete off-site class (any BYU class, PE Options, Supervised PE, or Job Experience) may not be able to pick up cap and gown at the luncheon until final grades for off-site courses are recorded on transcript. THEREFORE, pay fines, fees, and get those off-site courses finished NOW to ensure ease of pick up. Students are welcome to stop by the bookkeeper’s and ask. If there is an issue student cannot resolve in time, AFTER May 25, see Ms. Campbell or Registrar, Mrs. Diggs with questions. See bookkeeper for fees and library for fines. If there are financial issues with AP fees, see Ms. Campbell or Mrs. Diggs. PASS ALL CLASSES: NO STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO “WALK” or participate in the graduation ceremony if they have not completed any required credit. College acceptances are always conditional based on final transcript with 8th semester grades. Many students only need to pass Government and English to graduate, but they need 22.5 credits for Standard Diploma and 24 credits, including 4th math (incl. Alg 2) and 3rd science for Honors and Advanced Diplomas, Millennium Scholarship, and many scholarships; Honors Diploma requires “no F’s in junior or senior year” for example. It is important that seniors FINISH STRONG; don’t let up on studying, attending, doing homework, and participating in class! Have an issue? TALK TO YOUR TEACHERS! They want you to be successful; let them know when you are struggling and make the effort to get the extra help or extra time you need to finish strong. OFF SITE COURSES: BYU ONLINE COURSES, WCSD EXTENDED STUDIES (PE, JOB), INTERNSHIPS – By the time you are reading this, all off site courses should be finished and recorded on the student’s transcript, including all A+ online courses. APRIL 30 was the contracted deadline for off site courses to be completed; May 20 should be the outside exceptional deadline to finish all coursework including final exams for these off-campus courses. BYU courses as part of minimal load are required to be finished and will go on transcript, so please don’t delay on these important final details. Don’t let graduation be impacted by not finishing an online elective course!!
DIPLOMA OPTIONS: By now seniors should have “applied” for the highest diploma they qualify for (or are striving to achieve). Seniors eligible for an Honors Diploma will receive their HONOR CORD at the senior luncheon with cap and gown (unless there are holds due to fines, fees, or incomplete off-site courses). It is the student’s responsibility to bring the Honor Cord to graduation. There will NOT be any extras or replacements available June 13. Until final grades are posted, students must maintain the requirements for the Honors Diploma to be allowed to wear the cord at graduation and receive the Honors designation. Honor cords are yours to keep, compliments of the Galena Student Store. ORDER FINAL TRANSCRIPT FOR YOUR COLLEGE NOW. All colleges, including UNR and TMCC, require a final, official transcript be sent. These are NOT sent automatically; you must order them. Order your final transcript NOW! You can pre-order a final transcript through Parchment.com NOW (do this by the end of May!!) by marking “next grading period” or “HOLD FOR GRADES.” To complete a pre-order, you must use your legal name, correct birthdate, your Galena student ID number, and correct graduation year: 2017. College athletes: you must also send a copy of final transcript to NCAA via Parchment.com. Students who used Common App. must also order final transcript for school of choice via Parchment.com. Transcripts will not be sent via Common App. at the end of the year – use Parchment!! MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP. There is no application for the Millennium Scholarship. After final semester grades are posted in June, our registrar (Laurie Diggs) will generate a list of graduates who met all the scholarship requirements and send it to the state. For the most up-to-date and specific information, visit www.nevadatreasurer.gov. For those who do qualify for this scholarship, students historically would get a letter over the summer (right before UNR fees are due) asking whether he/she will accept the scholarship. Students have six years to use the funds at Nevada schools, so we recommend students accept regardless of their post-high-school plans now! A credit is on fees for local colleges….

UPCOMING EXAMS.
All seniors must TAKE all four END OF COURSE EXAMS. Galena students likely have taken all EOC’s in years past (while taking Algebra, Geometry, and English 3-4); however, students new to WCSD should currently be taking these exams for the first time. Senior must take these exams to graduate.
AP Exams are given on specific national dates, this year May 1–12. Occasionally a student has to miss an AP exam due to illness or a conflict. There are also national AP Exam make-up dates May 17-19. All students need to take all their AP exams!!
Final Exams can NEVER be given early. If a student is ill for a final exam, he/she should make arrangements for make-up testing with the teacher the week of final exams if at all possible. Seniors who miss final exams need to arrange make-ups ASAP, as this may impact ability to participate in graduation. You must take all final exams and pass all classes required for graduation BY JUNE 12 to participate in graduation on JUNE13. Stay on track, and stay healthy!
SENIOR BANNER: By the time you read this, the Senior Banner will be up. Each senior needs to show “proof of enrollment” to Counseling to reserve a square (Congrats letter or fee receipt or scholarship letter). Then, on their own time, they design that square with the “sharpie” pens we provide. Please do not attach anything to the banner; it has
to be folded up to be transported to the Atlantis for Senior Awards Night. Students joining the military or taking a gap year may also sign up for a square. We want to fill all squares just like last year!! . The SENIOR CLASS “MOVING ON” BANNER must be COMPLETED by Thurs., May 25; it will be used at the Senior Awards Night ceremony, hung above the stage. Seniors: Finish your “squares” ASAP on your own time by mid-May!!! SENIOR CLASS AWARDS NIGHT is scheduled for Tuesday, May 30, at the Atlantis and is an “invitation only” event. At this ceremony, we will announce all Academic Letter Award recipients, Community Service Letter Awards, scholarship offers students notified us that they received from multiple colleges (regardless of where student will actually attend), local scholarships received (that we receive notification of), and the Galena Scholarships will be announced for those who applied and attend. We are happy to announce all scholarships offered to students (whether they attend that university or not) if a copy, on official letterhead, from the university is turned in to Ms. Campbell, Mrs. Tappan in the library, or Mrs. Pillai in room 231—turned in ideally by May 12. Sometimes we can add late arriving scholarship info verbally to the Program, but it goes to the Print Shop at least 10 days before the event. We will print these scholarship offers in the Senior Class Awards Program. If students don’t turn them in, we don’t know about them and can’t print or announce the offers.

As the school year winds down, it is very important for juniors to stay focused and finish strong! Please make sure your student is communicating with his/her teachers to complete any missing assignments and to prepare for upcoming tests and their final exams. Final exams can NEVER be taken early, so if a student will miss a final exam, you can contact me or Mrs. Watterson in advance, and/or student can talk with the teacher to make arrangements. Juniors who signed up for a BYU class THIS semester SHOULD BE FINISHED WITH IT by now. If an off-site course was part of the student's minimum load of seven classes, that class MUST appear on the transcript for this semester, so the student needs to finish it BY JUNE. Order BYU Final Exams ASAP and take and pass that final exam ASAP! Over the summer, our Registrar can give make up final exams if students cannot make up by June 9.
Students who are planning to continue their studies after high school should also be exploring opportunities for this summer. Some examples might be attending a seminar or class, volunteering, visiting and/or re-searching colleges, taking a summer course, travelling, improving ACT/SAT test scores, or working. What a student does between junior and senior year is often the most important part of the college application process for Top Tier schools.
There are limited summer school options students can take advantage of to raise grades, make up credits, or get ahead. For juniors who are credit deficient, Galena High School usually offers three weeks of summer school through our A+ program. Students who are credit deficient MUST MAKE UP CREDITS BEFORE SENIOR YEAR so that they enter senior year needing 7 or fewer credits and graduation is feasible. There may also be some math and English classes available with teachers (offered at another location --Wooster or Vaughn Middle School); information to be announced. Students should let counselors know if they want to be included in summer school opportunities. BYU Independent Study is always available to high school students for a tuition cost (generally $50 to $150/course). BYU courses are accepted by WCSD; check out “BYU Independent Study” under “high school courses” online. TMCC and UNR also have a variety of summer classes that benefit students, but check to see if the dates the classes offered are compatible with the shortened WCSD summer break. WCSD Extended Studies may also offer options for PE credit and "credit by exam" for Computers and other core courses.
Galena counselors work periodically during the summer (approximately seven days total); you are welcome to e-mail, keeping in mind it may be weeks before you receive a response.
Our school office is open for much of the summer and our Registrar, Laurie Diggs, who handles all enrollments, withdrawals, and transcripts (and can proctor BYU exams) is on campus most
of the summer as well. If needed, call our Registrar or the main office to set up an appointment with a counselor.
Next fall the senior class counselor, Mandy Campbell, will meet with every senior to share information on graduation requirements, diploma options, college application timelines and answer questions about the senior year. Students entering their senior year should have a list of colleges they plan to apply for and/or a plan for after graduation (work, military, trade school, community college, university, or gap year travel). Your senior year is right around the corner and that final year tends to fly, so being as prepared as possible helps to reduce stress and increase chances for success. Enjoy your summer and we look forward to seeing you in August!
Course requests for senior year were finalized prior to Spring Break. Dropping any AP choice, even now, is not possible, as the Master Schedule for next year is being finalized now. However, students planning to take a TMCC "dual credit" class in the fall (or even summer) must get that paperwork done ASAP to reserve a spot. Students must apply to TMCC first (be sure to check the "Jump Start Dual Credit" box, under "Special Admissions" and check the "Not seeking a degree at this time" box under "Educational Goal." Then students must fill out the DUAL CREDIT FORM and give to Counselor or school official to sign. Student can then take the DCF to TMCC or Counselor can email to TMCC.

Dear Sophomores and Parents of Sophomores,
We are nearing the end of your sophomore year! Check Infinite Campus often and be sure you do not have missing assignments.
Summer School? If you failed a course during your freshman or sophomore year, and you want to make up the failed course this summer, please stop in and see me during lunch or break so I can be sure to put you on the summer school list. There are limited seats so let me know soon! There will be summer school transportation for students who live near Pine Middle School.
End of Course Exam Info for Class of 2019 End of Course Exams and AP Exams are taking place in May. Sophomores (Class of 2019) are required to pass
English I and English II EOC exams and the Math I and Math II EOC exams. It is a graduation requirement. In addition to passing those EOC’s, sophomores must have passed both the Algebra and Geometry courses.
You will also take the Science EOC exam. There is no set passing score for that one. This years’ sophomores have to show participation only for the Science exam.
You should have received a letter in the mail indicating the EOC exams you have already taken and passed, and the ones you will need to take and/or retake this time. Exams will be taken during the regular school day.
Ready to Drive? If you are 15 years old or over and you are thinking about meeting the
requirements for a drivers license, there are several opportunities this summer for you to get the 30 hour classroom requirement needed. Check the website bit.ly//TMCCDriversEd or call 829-9010. It will be very busy for the remainder of the school year! Study and do your best work!

Congratulations on making it through your freshman year! It’s hard to believe that this school year is almost over and your sophomore year is just weeks away. As the temperature warms and thoughts of the summer break fill your mind, please remember to finish the school year on a strong note and pass all of your classes first! The spring semester ends on June 9th and your grades at that time will be permanently reflected on your high school transcript (remember: it is the semester grades/credits earned in December and June that are on your transcript!). It is critical that students start their sophomore year without being credit deficient. If you did not pass one or more of your required classes at the end of the first semester last December (e.g. English, Math, Biology, Health, Computer Lit, PE, etc.) and/or you anticipate not passing one or more classes in June, please contact us as soon as possible so we can discuss options for you to make up credits- specifically summer school. We will be offering our online A+ program on our campus for a few weeks this summer. Ideally, freshman students will have/should have earned 7 credits by the end of their ninth grade year to be “on track”.
Hopefully you enjoyed your first year at Galena High School and took advantage of the many educational and extracurricular activities available to our students. We
encourage you to start thinking, planning, and preparing for your sophomore year- not just academically (the sophomore year is typically more challenging than the freshman year by the way!) but also in terms of what types of programs and activities you may want to explore next year now that you have one year under your belt. The summertime is also a great time to start researching college and career options- it is never too early to start planning for your future- as well as volunteer or community service opportunities. Many freshmen have commented that the school year did go by much faster than expected. Before you know it you will be looking at your junior and senior years . . . and then graduation in 2020! The sooner you begin developing plans and ideas for “life after Galena”, the more prepared you will be for your senior year and all the decisions and choices that come during that year and afterwards. It has been a pleasure getting to know our freshman students this year and we wish you a successful completion to all of your classes in June. Next year your counselor will be Ms. Tracy Melcher.
