professional staff, who have made the quest for joy their unwritten objective for our synagogue. I am very grateful that my service to the shul has been supported by so many caring and loving people who have a common goal: sharing joy.

The word “simcha” is derived from a word that means to “sprout” or “flourish.” Jews often use the word “simcha” as a noun. At Tifereth Israel, “simcha” has become more than that. It is more than a word. It is a feeling, it is an action, and it is a description. We are experiencing a true movement that is allowing our community to flourish and grow. Tifereth Israel is in the midst of a simcha. Step back, look around, and enjoy it.

I am thankful for our wonderful shul and its warmth and pure joy. We have a bright future and an abounding energy. We are in good hands and are truly blessed. As my term ends, I look forward to new beginnings and “simcha” for the future! I am touched by the joy experienced by our members and guests throughout the year. Thank you to our members, and to my fellow board officers, for helping build a bright future for all.

One final note: I am particularly grateful for the hard work and dedication of our Rabbinic Installation Committee. Susan Mott and Carol Glassman led a joyous team to create a beautiful weekend for the Skolnik family and our entire community. Thank you, again.

Be – (Tihyu s’meichim) תהיו שמחיםjoyous!

Focus on Joy Critical to Tifereth Israel’s Success David K. Stein, President | [email protected]

One year ago, I sat down to write out the goals for my term as President. There were obvious priorities, including ushering in our new rabbi and continuing the great work of our lay leaders and professional staff. But, there was also a certain intangible objective that needed close attention. We needed to re-prioritize the things that have made our shul a special place for more than a century. We needed to focus on joy.

Joy. For such a small word, it is a powerful expression. The feeling of joy can make a dark day very bright and can turn the mundane into a breathtaking and fulfilling thought or action. In Hebrew, the word “simcha” is equated with joy (have you ever realized how often a derivative of the word “simcha” appears in our prayers?).

Synagogues can evoke unusual feelings in people. Depending on the circumstances, some may feel joy when they come to shul and others may feel indifference, judgment, ignorance, boredom, or nostalgia. Our goal is to make the feeling of joy into a common thread for all of our members.

As the past year has unfolded, I have received numerous, increasingly frequent comments from many congregants. It is odd that so many people, from different paths, have used the nearly same expression. That is: there is a noticeable or palpable “buzz” at Tifereth Israel. “Something has shifted.” “There is so much joy in our services and in our programming.”

To me, this is a sign that we are on the path to success. The success belongs to our members, lay leaders, and

Traveling Together Through the Omer Toward Shavuot Rabbi Alex Braver | [email protected]

...............................................................

Okay, so now what?

That’s the question I imagine the Israelites asked themselves after the dramatic events of the Passover story came to a conclusion. Sure, they made it out of Egyptian slavery, freed by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, crossing through the sea on dry land to reach the other shore. But when the singing faded and the wilderness loomed ahead of them, I’m sure there was a moment of sober reflection, maybe even fear.

It’s in this place — not the place of dramatic miracles and joyous liberation, but the place of looking out and seeing an unknowable journey ahead — that most of us spend the majority of our lives. In which direction are we headed? What awaits us in the coming days, months, and years?

It’s this reality that we enter into with the counting of the omer, the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot that recall the journey from the edge of the sea to the foot of Mount Sinai.

During these 49 days, we will mark the modern holidays of the “Yoms” — Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day, May 1-2), Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day, May 7-8), and Yom HaAtzma’ut (Israeli Independence Day, May 8-9) — remembering the journey of 20th-century Jewry from the depths of destruction and despair to the joy of a restored homeland. Though we’re all familiar with the narrative of this journey, situating these holidays in the middle of the omer period is a reminder that for those who lived through it, the journey was never simple or pre-ordained, just like our ancestors in the wilderness may not have been able to truly trust in their arrival at Mount Sinai, and later in the Land of Israel.

We’ll also hold our annual meeting on Monday, May 13. It is our yearly acknowledgment of the hard work of our dedicated lay leadership, whose tireless effort has been its own unique journey in guiding our community through the challenges and uncertainty that face every Jewish community, along with a great many simchas and successes. Preceding the annual meeting is the annual memorial service, recalling all our loved ones who are no longer with us, but whose memories and deeds still accompany us on our journey together, guiding us with their examples.

Throughout this seven-week omer period, the mystics of the Jewish tradition would pick one attribute of the soul per week — love, discipline, harmony, ambition, humility, bonding, and nobility — to examine in a variety of different permutations, doing the difficult spiritual work of self-reflection and self-improvement. By the time the seven weeks ended and Shavuot arrived, they hoped to have done serious “repair” on themselves. As we continue on through this period, I hope you will consider taking on this practice for yourself. There are a number of omer-counting apps available for your smartphone, and the blessings are also available in our weekday and Shabbat prayerbooks or at https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/blessing-for-counting-the-omer/.

How ever you mark this period of counting the omer, we’re glad to have you on this journey together as a community.

Hosting Our Neighbors, Honoring Norman HosanskyCantor Jack Chomsky | [email protected]...............................................................

It has been my privilege to attend iftars (break fasts held at the end of a fast day during Ramadan) for a number of years in our community. We have had close ties with the Muslim community in Columbus going back many years – especially because of the work of the late Norman Hosansky, who took on relations with this community at the request of Rabbi Berman. Norman established special relations and programs with the Islamic Center – located just down the alley from us – and two of its leaders, Sohail Khan and Mazhar Jalil. We have also had a lot of contact with the Noor Islamic Center located in Hilliard.

They have been great friends to us—visiting us with flowers and cards in the sad days after the massacre at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. We have stood side-by-side with them at times that they have received threats from dark corners of our community. Noor’s Imran Malik even traveled with me and others to Pittsburgh to sit with Jews and Muslims of both communities together in solidarity.

This year, Ramadan begins in early May. Although Muslims follow the lunar calendar like the Jews, our calendar is an adjusted one. In some years, we add a month (Adar II) so that our spring holidays (for example, Passover) remain in the spring and

our fall holidays (for example, Rosh Hashanah) remain in the fall. Because they don’t observe a leap month, the Muslim observance of the calendar creeps forward about 11 days a year: A lunar year is 354 days, as opposed to a solar year of 365 days.

We have invited people from the Islamic community to Tifereth Israel on Wednesday, May 15, at 8:30 pm to break their fast. The tragic attacks that recently took place in New Zealand make it all the more important to reach out to our neighbors. You may be aware that I brought flowers and greetings to them the day after the attack, arriving just at the conclusion of their Friday prayers.

We are inspired to pay tribute to Norman and his work by naming this The Norman Hosansky Iftar and we are grateful to Norm’s family for underwriting the event. We will host about 15 people from the Islamic community and hope to have a similar number of people representing Tifereth Israel. If you would like to participate, please inform me.

In the meantime, we will all hope for, pray for, and continue to work for peace in our community and between communities.

Congregation Tifereth Israel1354 E. Broad St.

Columbus, OH 43205614-253-8523 • tiferethisrael.org

[email protected]

Howard Schottenstein I grew up at Tifereth Israel. My great-grandparents, grandparents and parents all belonged. I developed a view of the synagogue that I think many other members may share. Tifereth Israel was the place where I received my Jewish education, attended holiday services and my family’s life cycle

events, and celebrated my becoming a bar mitzvah.

My perspective of the part the synagogue played in my life changed greatly on January 16, 2004. That was the day my father died. I discovered that Congregation Tifereth Israel was more than just a place to practice one’s religion. It also provides a member with a community and a place of comfort. I had decided that as a final gift to my dad I would attempt to go to services and minyan daily. I’m so glad I did. At services I met people like myself who were going through the mourning period. I met others who went often because it was an important part of their Jewish life and then there were some who came to remember a loved one on the yahrzeit anniversary of their death.

At each service there was usually someone who had a funny story, the latest gossip, the need to express a political opinion, and always a warm greeting. Friendships were developed.

Getting through the loss of my father, I truly feel, was made easier by being at synagogue. I felt so touched by davening daily with other congregants that on the last day I was to say kaddish, I provided breakfast for those with whom I had prayed during the year.

Another unexpected discovery I made during the year was that we Jews have far more holidays to celebrate than many of us realize. Some are very moving, but the majority are really a lot of fun. I suggest taking the opportunity to try morning services on holidays like Simchat Torah, Sukkot, or Purim.

From 2008-2010 I served as President of Congregation Tifereth Israel. I did so, in part, to continue the legacy of my great-grandfather, I. H. Schlezinger, and my grandfather, Louis Schlezinger, both of whom served as presidents. However, I also felt it was a mitzvah to be a part of providing members a place where they not only have a community that is there to share the happy moments in their lives, but also to help them through the tougher times. Tifereth Israel did that for me. And, this makes me glad that my family continues to be members here.

What I Love About Tifereth Israel
