Aclinical trial, supportedby the National Institutes ofHealth, is currently beingconducted at the Mayo Clinic testing the effects of calcium channel blockers inpatients who have intractable epilepsy. To qualify for this trial, the patient musthave suffered from intractable epilepsyfor more than 2 years despite optimal useofcurrent anticonvulsants. Patients must also be between 18 and 45 years ofage.The calcium antagonist is used as an add-on therapy, and the patient's currentanticonvulsant regimen is not altered. Using the case presentation method, this workshop willfeature discussions ofcommon but difficult diagnostic prob­lems encountered by pathologists in everyday practice.Participants will study microscopic slides that illustratepreviously presented briefreviews of case histories. Subse­quently, experts will discuss the differential diagnosis andpatient management. Audience participation will be en­couraged in these discussions-dialogue that allows differ­ences of opinion to be shared. This format was selectedbecause it reflects a "real-life" approach to these difficultproblems. The cases (chosenby Mayo faculty members) willbe representative of those encountered on a regular basis inthe average surgical pathology laboratory. Topics of discus­sion include the following areas: brain, breast, liver, lung,soft tissue, gynecologic specimens, and lymphomas.
