“Our philosophy is to provide needed ser-vices to people, yes,” Connors told me re-cently, “but performance is most important.We have to encourage people to realize theirtrue potential and help them reach it in afun and entertaining way. We know that ourguests as well as our colleagues learn betterwhen enjoying themselves. So, our goal isto have people leave our facilities everysingle day saying ‘wow!’ and then takingthat experience out into the real world.”

Tom also told me of the tremendous gen-erosity of private business partners in Lawr-ence and surrounding cities and towns.“Our business partners donate a tremendousamount of money, resources and time andwe need to produce results to show whatwe are doing with all the funds and resour-ces so generously given in the name of help-ing needy people.” And they certainly aredoing that!

But if you are not one of the [hundreds]of individuals who are in need of their ser-vices, chances are the only thing you knowabout American Training is that they pro-vide transportation when you see their vans,with the American Training logo on them,traveling the streets of local communities.What you may not know however is thatthese vans carry [hundreds] of individualsevery month to and from work, job training,recreation and education sites, and theyeven bring people to appointments and totheir doctor’s office.

The ValleyWorks Career Center helpsyouth gain the skills, experience andconfidence needed to pursue their idealcareer. The agency has a staff ofprofessional career counselors who helpeach young person discover their careerinterests and work toward attaining thecertifications and skills to be fullyemployed.

ValleyWorks cooperates with manyorganizations throughout the MerrimackValley to provide young people specializedtraining in job-related skills. In-schoolprograms are offered which help youthexplore many career options, whilecompleting their high school education. Wealso offer programs for out-of-school youthwhich help them earn their GED and gainspecific work skills.

Funded by Workforce Investment Act(WIA) Funds, youth programs are providedfor those aged 14-21 who meet certaineligibility criteria. Youth are selected forparticipation in each program based on theircareer goals and the program’s purpose.

This year Mayor Sullivan was able todouble the amount of summer hires to 88students. Youth Job Coordinator MeganShea and Job Coach Zulaika conducted theinitial orientation for students at theLawrence library.

Summer hires are placed throughout citydepartments and in non-profit organizationsthroughout the area. Frank Bonet, the CityPersonnel Director, was able to placestudents in organizations such as YWCA,Boys & Girls Club, Lawrence HousingAuthority, Greater Lawrence Technical HS,Food for the World, and GLCAC-Patch.Additionally students are working in citydepartments such as the Nursing Office,Inspectional Services, the City CouncilOffice, City Clerk, Elections, Airport, andmore.

Rumbo printing John Birch Society pressreleases! Huh?

I was quite surprised to see that Rumbo (the sometimesbilingual newspaper in Lawrence) was printing pressreleases from The John Birch Society (JBS) … did Isee that right? The press release discussed freedomand the 4th of July and advocated donating to andjoining the Society. What the press release failedto mention, but the JBS website does, is that theSociety stands for “No illegal Immigration, NoAmnesty and No Guest Workers” According toSourcewatch.org “JBS advocates … the repealof all civil rights legislation, which it sees asbeing Communist in inspiration.” With Rumboattacking Superintendent Wilfredo T. Laboy forwhat they call “segregation” because he has decided toplace newly arriving non-English speaking students in the“old” high school, I wonder how the Rumbo editors canthen print a press release from the JBS, which advocatesrepealing all civil rights. As the caveman in the Geicocommercial says … duh… WHAT?

I want to recognize a vote of 34-0 in theMassachusetts Senate banning the practice ofInternet hunting. Anti-hunting Groups such asthe Humane Society of the United States paired up withpro-hunting groups of the National Rifle Association andthe Safari Club International in opposing the practice ofInternet Hunting. Internet hunting involves sitting at yourcomputer, picking a deer or other animal and then with aclick of the mouse, the animal is killed and the “trophy” isshipped to your home. Councilor Leahy MiffedMethuen City Councilor Phil Leahy attended a

fund-raiser last month for his colleague Steve Zanniat a local restaurant (which does not advertise withThe Valley Patriot). He said he came to show hissupport for the council president. But as Steve Zannitook the podium to thank his guests, Leahy got quitethe surprise. “I think what the City Council did last week,the way a certain individual was treated, was just wrong.We need to treat people better,’ Zanni said. The CouncilPresident was talking about the way the City Council redlined the Human Resource Director’s position out of thebudget, leaving David Baine without a job. Leahy was thedeciding vote to terminate Baine, who was hired as theHuman Resources Director by former Mayor SharonPollard. Sources in Mayor Manzi’s office tell The

Valley Patriot that Baine will not be off thecity payroll, however. Manzi is planningon appointing Baine as a temporaryreplacement for Veteran’s ServicesDirector Ed “Hoppy” Curran. Forhis part, Leahy stormed out of theevent saying he was deeplyoffended. “I think I was justinsulted,” Leahy said.

Children denied use of TownFields

The North Andover Board of Selectmen voted to closetown-owned fields on the first day of Town Meetingbecause they think government interference with sports

will make the town care more about the politics of townmeeting. Even Republican Jim Xenakis supportedthe measure spearheaded by outgoing financecommittee member Melinda Coppa. Tom Zahoruikowas right in his opposition to this measure. Closingthe town fields (and, by the way, not the schoolfields) will not encourage more participation attown meeting. It will only deny children offamilies who have no interest in town politics the

opportunity to enjoy the fields.

North Andover Officials Stepping Down

Several of North Andover’s elected and appointedofficials have made it known that they are not returning topublic service next year when their terms expire. SelectmanTom Licciardello respectfully announced last month that

he will not seek a second term to the board,citing financial losses and the “incredibleburden” that being an elected official has hadon his time with his family and his business.Also not returning to the Board of Selectman

next year is Jim Xenakis (who saw fit to tellthe Eagle Tribune before telling us).

Xenakis will be sorely missed, as he hasbeen one of the very few realconservatives the board has had in the

last 10 years. Melinda Coppa, member of the FinanceCommittee, says she is not going to seek reappointmentnext spring and School Committee disaster Tim Pybus hasseen fit to follow in the footsteps of his mentors DanMurphy and Al Perry by not seeking reelection next March.Why so many officials jumping ship all at once? I really

don’t know. I just hope that we can recruit responsible,conservative candidates to replace them, otherwise… well … Diane Huster is still desperately tryingto be relevant in town and I don’t think anyonewants to see her ascend back into the spotlightsimply because there are no other qualifiedcandidates. Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble….

Dave Abdoo to Run for CityCouncil …

Murphy Could Jump In

Lawrence planning board member David Abdoo, wholives in the Mount Vernon section of South Lawrence, hastaken out nomination papers to run for city council. Abdoo,if successful, will replace outgoing Councilor GilbertFrechette who is not running for reelection. Abdoo mayface a crowded field with Matty Brien (Lantigua’scandidate) and Dan Rooney (nobody’s candidate) alreadytaking out papers. Former Lawrence police officer ThomasMurphy is reportedly giving “seriousconsideration” to jumping into the race aswell. While there is going to be a verytough fight for that third at-large spot onthe city council, this District “E” race torepresent South Lawrence West willcertainly be the one to watch.

thought about her ridiculous vote and her bad behaviorlast week when she almost single handedly shut down thecity of Lawrence with her vote against the emergency 30day budget? For the record, I lobbied councilors hard tosupport the emergency measure to prevent an interruptionin city services and to make sure city employees get paidafter July 1st.. So I say again, anyone who thinks that I oranyone else can “control” City Councilor Grisel Silva(including herself) obviously doesn’t know her very well.

Political Stocks: Who’s Up and Who’sDown Since Our Last Edition

DOWN: Andover State Representative BarryFinegold. Barry was well on his way to chipping away at

Niki Tsongas’ double digit lead in the5th congressional race when he wasasked why, if he is pro-abortion, that hewould sponsor a bill mandating women

who are seeking an abortion receivemedical information on the risks ofthe procedure. Instead of using theissue as a chance to distancehimself from the other candidatesand take a more moderate position

on the abortion issue Finegold balked and retreated fromthe bill.

Instead of explaining to the public that anyone who hasany medical procedure should be informed of the risks, hesaid he didn’t know how his name was added to the list ofsponsors. Then, to prove how pro-abortion he really is,Finegold had his name removed as a sponsor of the bill,thereby denying critical medical information to womenwho are struggling with their choice. My only question toFinegold and the rest of the pro “abortion on demand”crowd is this: isn’t “choice” irrelevant when you do nothave all the information about the choice you are about tomake? Just wondering.

UP: Lowell City Councilor Eileen Donoghue. Youwould think that Finegold’s blunder on the abortion issuewould benefit the front runner Niki Tsongas, but accordingto internal polling figures leaked to the Valley Patriot it isEileen Donoghue who is picking up support among voters.In the end, the abortion issue is completely irrelevant inthis race because there is absolutely no difference betweenany of the candidates’ positions except one: Jim Miceli,who is pro life … and he can’t win.

UP: Jennifer Kannan. Candidate for city council atlarge. Jennifer Kannan has been turning heads on thepolitical scene in Methuen since she announced herintentions to run. Insiders are very excited by Kannan’scandidacy and a quick poll of the movers and shakers inMethuen has me calling her the front runner in that race.

UP: Lawrence City CouncilPresident Patrick Blanchette.Blanchette was able to put aside his

hatred for Mayor MichaelSullivan and fight for a 30 day

emergency budget last weekinstead of continuing with therecent mantra of personalinsults and obstructiontactics at the council table.Patrick is still not happywith the submitted FY08

budget and is sure to pick it apart piece by piece when it isdiscussed later in the month, but that’s what he and hisfellow councilors were elected to do. What I expect ofBlanchette and the rest of the council is that, when it reallycounts and it’s going to affect the lives of city workers(and residents), that they put aside personal feelings anddo what is right for the people. It is sad that CouncilorGrisel Silva could not do that.

UP: 5th District Congressional Candidate NikiTsongas. Let’s face facts, Tsongas is a pro and hercampaign team is outstanding. The first televisioncommercial touting Tsongas’ commitment toAmerican servicemen returning home from Iraq andAfghanistan was perhaps the most effective tvcommercial any candidate for office has run in thelast four years.

While I disagree with Tsongas on 90% of herissues, from a strategy standpoint, thiscommercial was hard hitting, it was positive, itwas emotional and it grabbed your attention right away.The fact that her father survived the attack on Pearl Harborand is featured prominently in the ad goes to show justhow good her consultants are ... now if only we could getsome of those advertising dollars!

Selectmen’s SpinMembers of the North Andover Board of Selectmen were

pretty upset by our lead story last month detailing howtheir property values went up while their tax bills wentdown. The story detailed how the majority of the pro-override selectmen would barely be affected by the

proposed override (which passed). So, they decided to puta hilarious “spin” on the story suggesting that the reporter(Paula Porten) who wrote the story was insinuating thatthere was some kind of wrongdoing or illegality going on,which was clearly not the case. The fact is, and cannot bedisputed no matter how many times they cloud the issue,the majority of the pro-override selectmen had a decreasein their taxes while their property taxes went up. Shameon the selectmen for lying about what the article clearly

stated “An investigation by the Valley Patriot hasfound no wrongdoing or illegality.” For the record,Paula Porten supported the override and did notwrite the story to hurt the override effort.

Still Waiting for Sue TuckerAndover State Senator Sue Tucker has yet to

make an endorsement in the 5th congressionalrace. Tucker said back in March that she wasgoing to endorse a “woman” because, she said,“We need a woman in congress.” This is about

as absurd as it gets. Using a person’s gender as the maincriteria as to who should or should not be elected is asprejudice as choosing someone because they are white, ormale or Catholic. Since there are only three candidateswithout male appendages in the race for congress I amstill wondering if she is going to support Eileen Donoghue,Niki Tsongas or Jamie Eldridge?
