Athletes Unlimited is dedicated to enhancing the lives of children and adults with disabilities through year-round recreation and leisure programs. It is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 by parents of children with disabilities in Newton to support the City of Newton’s therapeutic recreation program.

The Newton Parks & Recreation Department has been providing year-round recreation programs for individuals with disabilities for 41 years. A forerunner in community-based therapeutic recreation programs for people with disabilities, the department currently serves over 300 athletes with disabilities each year. The Newton Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank and congratulate all of the athletes, coaches, volunteers and families on this momentous occasion.

Dear Friends, Welcome to our Annual Awards Ceremony! This year’s theme - “Night of Champions” is perfect for two reasons - for the great city of Boston and our epic championship sports teams, but also for our amazing city of Newton and the work of Athletes Unlimited, our fantastic organization. Tonight we gather to honor our very own champions - our athletes, our coaches, our volunteers, our community partners and our friends and family. As you follow the ceremony tonight, you will notice the expansive reach of sports, recreation, and social activities we offer our community through-out their lifetimes. This evening is a great opportunity to reflect on what we’ve accomplished for individuals with disabilities and what we can do in the future as our participants age and as new participants move to our communities and join us in the fun. Sincere thanks from the entire Athletes Unlimited community to Mort Orlov, who served as President of the Board of Directors since 2012, and Patricia McSheffrey who served as treasurer since 2016. We thank you for your time, commitment, vision and leadership over the years. In taking over the President’s position I hope to build upon the strong foundation left by Mort and Patricia. We also welcome Patricia Savage, new board member and Treasurer as well as our other new board members, Dan Ferry, Monica Garlick, Joe Prestejohn, Karl O’Hara and Mike Skiotis.
