You may be fam iliar with environmental cleanups that the Department of Energy (DOE) is perform ing in Maywood, Lodi and Rochelle Park. If so, you may think that when the pile of soil stored in Maywood is gone, the cleanup will be complete. In fact, there are more residential and commercial properties in the three communities that contain low levels of radioactive material in soils that still need to be dealt with in the coming years.

Several weeks ago.local officials and DOE representatives began the process of form ing a community group that will meet regularly to be updated about current cleanup activities and to provide input to DOE on issues of concern regarding the agency’s future work in our communities. DOE is specifically looking for feedback on the options for addressing commercial and government-owned properties (so-called Phase 11). Because federal funds for the site are shrinking, and in light of the many challenges still to be addressed, the community group will focus on the difficult issues posed by the Phase II cleanup, such as sele>.:iag a remedy for the properties involved.

Representatives from Maywood, Lodi, Rochelle Park, and Bergen County were brought together as a Steering Committee to develop a M ission Statement and Objectives for the community group. The M ission Statement tells the purpose of the organization, and the Objectives suggest, in greater detail, the specific responsibilities of the group.

Because the membership should be diverse and representative of our communities, the Steering Committee is looking. for a broad range of community residents including:

. environmentalists

. real estate professionals l teachers . seniors and retirees . business community representatives
