High temperatures in spring meant that the vines sprouted fifteen to twenty days earlier than usual, showing signs that they would produce a heavy crop, flower well and the fruit would set well. The vines’ vegetative growth progressed very well, with the grapes turning colour two weeks earlier than in a normal year. The first fortnight of September was cooler than usual and from 20th September onwards there were rain- and hail-storms and very high temperatures, which meant the harvest had to start earlier and be carried out faster, with very exacting criteria applied to classifying the grapes. The harvest in La Rioja began in mid-September, starting with the Tempranillo grapes then moving on to the Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano varieties and, lastly, the Viura. The 2014 harvest was better than the previous year’s in terms of both quantity and quality. WINEMAKING The Mazuelo variety has been grown in La Rioja for several hundred years but today barely cover 3% of the Denomination’s surface area. It enables us to make wines with high levels of tannins and acidity and whose colour is stable, making it a good complement to Tempranillo and creating wines that can age for a long time. Beronia Mazuelo Reserva 2014 was made using pre-fermentation cold maceration and maceration at a controlled temperature of 26- 28oC, with regular pumping over to extract both colour and the desired aromas and thus its distinct varietal personality. This wine spent 24 months in barrels made with American oak staves and French oak ends. Once bottled, it was left to rest for at least 12 months in the winery before being released. WINEMAKER’S NOTES Beronia Mazuelo Reserva 2014 is a dark plum colour with maroon edges and is deep, clean and bright. Complex on the nose, it displays aromas of stewed fruit and nuts, along with delicate notes of nutmeg and essence of mint that adds freshness. Ripe fruit dominates on the palate, accompanied by touches of spice and mint. This wine is long, with very structured tannins typical of this grape variety, balanced acidity and a long, fresh finish. SERVING AND PAIRING This wine an ideal for drinking with charcoal-grilled meat, roasts, game dishes and cheese.
