“The MBA has allowed me to capitalise on career opportunities and presented new networking opportunities which I did not previously have access to.”

www.liverpool.ac.uk/management/mba03

A truly transformational experience. Personally and professionally.

Our programmes provide all the core MBA subjects as you would expect and will certainly help you develop rigorous analytical skills. But we know that this in itself is not enough. To help you become the manager, leader or entrepreneur you want to be, we will help you develop the self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills which enable you to understand, inspire, motivate, and influence others.

Our students’ life plans are all very different, and so are their specific personal development goals. Our focus on developing the whole person means that you will leave our programme as a stronger and more creative manager and leader, with the ability to operate at a strategic level, whatever career choices you make.

We will encourage you to question all of your previous assumptions, to recognise the limits of current perspectives, and test theories in real life situations.

We are your partners in learning throughout the programme, and throughout the course of your career.

Here at Liverpool we pride ourselves on getting to know all of our MBA students really well. So whilst we recruit an international cohort from a diverse range of sectors, the size of our MBA cohort allows for tailor-made academic and careers support to accelerate individual outcomes.

We operate in a dynamic global environment, and we continuously seek feedback from our alumni and business contacts to shape the MBA student experience and programmes. Our students learn in a state-of-the-art teaching space, and we also offer students the opportunity for European study visits.

I look forward to welcoming you to your own transformational experience in Liverpool.

The learning experience you gain from our MBA programmes is greatly enhanced by the sheer diversity of your fellow students. Full-time and part-time students are taught together and come from a range of sectors, industries, backgrounds, countries and cultures. Their unique experiences can help you to develop an understanding of business on a global scale.

Students join our MBA programmes to achieve a number of professional goals. They may plan to start a new business, move into a more senior strategic role, or improve the performance of their current company. Students may also plan to change their job function, sector, or move to another country. Typically they will have a minimum of 2 – 3 years of substantive management experience and want to raise their skill levels.

“The strategic management simulation module taught us how to manage a range of situations that occur in a dynamic industry. The simulation integrated finance, marketing and human resource management to capture the essence of strategic decision-making.”

Full-timeProgramme Code: MBA/HSMajor Code: BLBAProgramme Length: 12 months

Part-timeProgramme Code: MBA/HS/PMajor Code: BLBAProgramme Length: 24 months

Programme OverviewIf you’re looking to develop your skills as an effective manager and potential leader, then the Liverpool MBA is the programme for you. You’ll build a deeper understanding of core business and management disciplines and learn how they link together strategically and operationally. You will also undertake a range of roles in diverse teams.

The core elements of the programme– leadership, strategy, organisations, consultancy, managerial economics, international business, innovation, entrepreneurship, marketing, supply chain management and managing financial resources – are delivered in concentrated blocks to encourage a deeper understanding, with a strong emphasis on interactive teaching and learning.

The elective modules allow specialisation in areas of finance, marketing and supply chain management, or allow you to explore new areas of project design and management challenges in nonprofit sectors.

The broader skills you’ll acquire include analysis, problem solving, creativity and decision-making. The Developing as a Manager and a Leader module will also serve to strengthen and hone your interpersonal, communication and leadership abilities – all of which will prepare you for success within the modern organisation.

Cutting edge research and theory, we believe, has most value when it can be seen working in practice, which is why live case studies and simulations are central to teaching and learning. You’ll also have a range of opportunities to work on real projects for sponsoring organisations through work based projects and the student-led consultancy service.

WhereItTakesYouGraduating from the Liverpool programme has given students access to a range of senior functional and general management positions across a wide spectrum of business sectors – from financial consultancy to construction, and from engineering to retail. include industry analysis, external and internal benchmarking and firm-internal data analysis. ServiceManagement(ULMS852) This module will familiarize students with the concepts, principles, practices and problems typically associated with service management. Service management covers the full lifecycle of service planning, building and operation and is concerned with the provision of services that meet customer value expectations and business needs in the most cost-effective manner. The module will include an overview of service operations best-practices. Contemporary research in public and third sectors will be used to provide real-world perspectives on key principles. Project Design and Evaluation (ULMS853) This module provides students with the necessary toolkit, analytical skills and groundwork required to strategically design and analyse new and existing projects, address issues facing the institution and develop strategies to mitigate. Advanced Financial and Management Accounting (ULMS537) This module covers the key elements of financial reporting regulation set out in International Financial Reporting Standards with particular reference to the interpretation of financial statements. Similarly, the module also places an emphasis on the usefulness of management accounting in the process of planning, decision making and control within the context of costs and revenues and the benefits of producing such information in organisations. Advanced Corporate Finance and FinancialManagement(ULMS538)Students explore the role of finance and financial management in establishing a successful corporate financial strategy in modern organisations. A range of topics are covered including: frameworks for financial decisions; investment decisions and strategies; value, risk and the required return; short-term financing and policies; and strategic financial decisions.

The Financial System and Risk Management(ULMS539)This module aims to increase students’ knowledge of the financial system; the structure, regulation and functioning of financial markets and institutions, and related challenges.

It will also cover issues related to money, bond, equity and the future and options markets in the financial system. The module further provides an understanding of the analysis and valuation of securities in the modern era with a particular emphasis on the role of markets in the global economy. Students will also develop the critical thinking and problem solving and risk management skills necessary to respond to challenging situations in global organisations. Local Entrepreneurship and Enterprise(ULMS534) This module enables the student to develop her/his entrepreneurial and managerial competence by working with a local enterprise in the Liverpool city-region social economy. The module will introduce to the student the local base for entrepreneurship with an emphasis on those enterprises operating in the social economy. Students will become aware of the motivations, experiences and challenges facing such enterprises and will understand the skills and talents required to work in the social economy sector. This is an applied module and students will deploy their learning by means of project-based short-term placement in a local enterprise. Managing and Communicating theBrand(ULMS540) This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to design, launch and manage a brand. Themes include: brand architecture, customer based brand equity, creating brands that resonate and Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) to build brand romance. Assessment includes a role-play individual presentation to pitch a campaign. In the role of an IMC agency, students will present and justify their strategies and tactics for launching a new brand into the UK market to the brand owner’s board of directors. Public and Not-for-Profit Management(ULMS851) This module will introduce students to the theoretical and practical aspects of management in public and not-for-profit organisations. It will explore the changing public policy context in which such organisations function. It will consider political and social aspects of governance and the associated problems of accountability. The changing legal and financial contexts within which they operate will be discussed. Case studies will

be used throughout to illustrate the varieties of ways in which these challenges are addressed. Operations and Supply Chain Management(EBUS615) The effective management of supply chains is key to successful operations in modern organisations. The need to be competitive, reach new markets, source new goods and raw materials as well as globalisation have all been key contributors to the development of supply chains as a function. However, operations management also involves fundamental subjects such as total quality management, which is well established in academia and industry and is considered a necessity for a successful organisation. This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of key principles, systems and techniques used to assure effective operations management covering topics such as inventory management, capacity management, forecasting and lean thinking. Dissertation(ULMS706) This module, in the second semester, comprises two elements: a series of Research Methods seminars and workshops introduces students to the principles and practices of researching and writing dissertations and results in an agreed outline plan of work. The second element involves the implementation of the research work plan and the completion of a 15,000 word dissertation over the summer period. WorkBasedProject(ULMS823)This module will enable students to use and extend the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme, and apply this in a live organisational setting, over the summer period. Initially students will take part in a series of seminars and workshops to develop an understanding of relevant research methods. Then, using appropriate management research methodologies and/or data collection methods, students will explore an area of interest through undertaking a specific project for an organisation. The organisation selected will function as the ‘client’. Students will be allocated an academic supervisor and an organisation sponsor, and will produce a report for the organisation as well as a separate academic piece of work.

Leadership, Management andOrganisation(ULMS847)This module starts with a focus on the individual, and on the differences between individuals that impact on their behaviour in groups and organisations. Moving through group dynamics, the final level of focus will be at organisational level. Approaches taken to the management and leadership of people in a range of organisations and sectors, and the impact of these on organisational culture, ethics and performance will be considered. ManagerialEconomics(ULMS848)Today’s managers must understand more than just how markets work and the principles of supply and demand. They also must understand how self-interested parties within organisations interact, and how corporate governance mechanisms control these interactions. This module applies economics tools to provide aspiring managers with the skill set necessary for rigorous analysis of business problems that they are likely to encounter throughout their careers. Managing Financial Resources(ULMS701) This module provides students with an understanding of the scope of responsibilities of organisations to various stakeholders and the role of financial resources within that context. Students explore how financial resources can be managed to add value, and how major capital resource decisions are made to optimise shareholder wealth. Students gain an understanding of financial information requirements and are equipped to prepare and interpret basic financial statements in compliance with the international accounting standards IAS1 and IAS7. Marketing and Supply Chain Management(ULMS846) The module takes a strategic approach and captures the essence of marketing planning in analysing the internal, external and customer environments in order to evaluate choices and exploit opportunities for growth. It examines sources of competitive advantage including being customer orientated, matching supply chain design to competitive

strategy, exploiting pricing options and positioning the organisation’s products and/or services through integrated marketing communications strategies. Strategy and Organisation (ULMS822) The aim of the module is to provide the students with a comprehensive overview of strategic analysis, strategy formulation and implementation, and to enable them to develop and implement strategies in their own organisations. The module places particular emphasis on understanding the environment in which strategic development takes place, including the industry and country environment. Furthermore, the module aims to enable students to understand and appreciate the organisational context in which strategic decisions are made. The module takes a critical approach. It draws on insights from a variety of sources and disciplines, including managerial and industry economics, but also behavioural perspectives and organisation theory in order to provide an integrative perspective on strategy. Strategic Management Simulation(ULMS774) This module introduces students to key aspects of strategic management through a business simulation exercise. The simulation is a sophisticated computer-based exercise conducted over two days with preparatory online work beforehand and class work to complete the module. Students work in teams and compete against each other. The strategic decisions they make have a real time effect on the performance of their organisation. Developing as a Manager andaLeader(ULMS821) This module is key to the MBA Programme in its focus on the development of the whole person, particularly the crucial soft skills involved in leading and managing people in organisations. In a world where change is a constant in organisations, with global competition and rapidly advancing technologies, students will need to become reflective practitioners in order to take ownership of their own skill development and “future proof” their careers. Through a range of diagnostics, expert feedback, masterclasses, practice, and exercises including practical examples of critical “leadership dilemmas” from senior practitioners, students gain self -awareness

through a better understanding of themselves as individuals, team members, potential leaders, managers and learners. The module then focuses on supporting students to develop a robust, individualised personal/career development and action plan. Students may also benefit from opportunities for 1-1 coaching and to work with a mentor from a role or sector they aspire to. Innovation and Entrepreneurship(ULMS704) The objective of this module is to integrate the two fields of innovation and entrepreneurship focusing upon management practice and creating change in a range of sectors. It will approach the analysis of innovation and entrepreneurship by drawing attention to relevant theories and research but placing more emphasis on applying these to practice in a broader context including the private, public and third sector and ways of creating new business models, opportunities, value and change. In particular, the module will examine issues and dilemmas in “doing” innovation and entrepreneurship. International Business and the GlobalEnvironment(ULMS849) Students will analyse the implications of internationalisation for organisations and assess how to effectively manage international business activities. The module outlines the main theories and evidence on major issues about the location and relocation of international business activities and the implications of these location decisions for the management of strategy and the operations of public and private sector organisations. The module explores the key factors that make international business different from domestic strategies and operations. Management Consulting in Practice(ULMS850) In this module, students will gain first hand practical experience in management consulting by working on a live project with a client organisation. Students are expected to offer a solution for the client’s issue in presentation format to be delivered to senior client managers. Students will develop skills related to management consulting, in particular project management, teamwork, data analysis, and oral and visual communication. Typical projects could relate to market analysis, change management or product innovation and tasks could

importance of sound financial management to the successful implementation of strategy. Students thus learn how to interpret football club accounts and analyse the major financial issues managers and executives face in the contemporary football business, before moving on to consider the implications of developments in licensing and regulation, club strategies and turnarounds, and the financial implications of building new stadiums and hosting international tournaments.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ULMS704)Students are introduced to state-of-the-art thinking in bringing together innovation and entrepreneurship, exploring and developing the management capabilities required to create change and respond to the challenges posed by uncertain, complex and dynamic business environments. The module aims to encourage critical reflection on the complex issues and challenges of innovation and entrepreneurship in practice, and to increase awareness of the opportunities available in developing new business models, value creation and change. The module uses an ‘active learning approach’ in which students carry out their own live projects, in small groups, to develop and commercialise innovative ideas from a range of organisations.

International Business and the GlobalEnvironment(ULMS849)The module provides an understanding the major drivers of the internationalisation of business activities. Students will analyse the implications of internationalisation for the strategies and operations of organisations and assess how to effectively manage international business activities. The module outlines the main theories and evidence on major issues about the location and relocation of international business activities and

the implications of these location decisions for the management of strategy and the operations of public and private sector organisations. The module explores the key factors that make international business different from domestic strategies and operations. The application of the analysis of these differences to practical issues in the management of organisations is central to the module’s objectives.

Sport and the Law (ULMS721)This module introduces students to the ways in which the forces of domestic, European and international law impact upon the sports industries. It considers how the law is a fundamental force in driving the development of regulation in sport internationally and how long-standing practices can be challenged in the courts. Topics covered include: Arbitration, Employment Law, Discrimination, Competition Law, Free Movement, Intellectual Property and combating Ambush Marketing. Assessment includes a choice of essay or problem question and a negotiation exercise.

Sports Operations Management(ULMS829)This module introduces students to the theory, principles and practicalities of managing sports operations and events. Guest speakers and visits to clubs allow students to develop an awareness of the practical, regulatory and legal issues involved in running major sporting events. Specifically, the module covers operations design, demand forecasting, managing the customer experience, safety and security, event management and broadcasting, and logistics. The module offers students the opportunity to appreciate the challenges involved in the delivery of sports events.

Dissertation(ULMS706)This module, in the second semester, comprises two elements: a series of Research Methods seminars and workshops introduces students to the principles and practices of researching and writing dissertations and results in an agreed outline plan of work. The second element involves the implementation of the research work plan and the completion of a 15,000 word dissertation over the summer period.

WorkBasedProject(ULMS823)This module will provide a process which will enable students to use and extend the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme, and apply this in a live organisational setting, over the summer period.

Module summariesBecoming a Football Executive (ULMS824)This module is key to the MBA Programme in its focus on the development of the whole person, particularly the crucial skills needed to develop a successful career in the football industry. Run over two semesters, this module is also supported by the navigator programme where students develop the knowledge and skills they require to compete in the football job market. The module also involves a football management simulation that enables students to critically reflect on their performance in a high pressure situation. Students learn from industry professionals and are encouraged to enhance their employability by developing their skills of negotiation, networking and personal branding. They also receive support to create CVs tailored for use in securing work based projects, internships and jobs in football.

International Football Industry (ULMS763)The aim of this module is to develop a critical understanding of the structure and organisation of football across different international settings. The module critically examines the relevant concepts, theories, models and structures of professional football leagues and other factors that influence decision-making across the various sectors of the football industries. group dynamics, the final level of focus will be at organisational level.

Managing Financial Resources (ULMS701)This module provides students with an understanding of the scope of responsibilities of organisations to various stakeholders and the role of financial resources within that context. Using a

range of case studies and examples, students will gain an understanding of the importance of marketing for football clubs and governing bodies, both as a source of revenue but also as a means to keep fans engaged with teams and players. Assessment will be via an individual essay chosen from a range of topics covering the different sessions within the module and by assessed presentations on the challenges facing a sports brand.

Strategy and Organisation (ULMS822)Leaders and managers of organisations today face many types of challenges. The essence of strategy is in successfully achieving the appropriate fit between resources and environment in an increasingly dynamic and turbulent world. The aim of the module is to provide the students with a comprehensive overview of strategic analysis, strategy formulation and implementation, and to enable them to develop and implement strategies in their own organisations. The module pays particular emphasis on helping students to understand the environment in which strategic development takes place, including the industry and country environment.

Programme OverviewThis unique Thoroughbred Horseracing Industries MBA is the only masters-level qualification in the world to be delivered through an exclusive partnership with the British Horseracing Authority and The Racing Foundation. The programme combines the Management School’s expertise in sports industry management, with the specialist equine knowledge of the University’s School of Veterinary Science.

As an MBA programme it has the real business focus that management positions in modern horseracing demand. This is based on links with key sectors of the industry — from racecourses, horseracing governance and administration, owners and trainers and the media, to the gambling industry.

If you’re looking to develop your skills as an effective manager and potential leader in the global horseracing industry, this is the MBA for you. The core elements of the programme – leadership, strategy, organisations, managerial economics, international business, marketing and managing financial resources – are delivered in concentrated blocks to encourage a deeper understanding, with a strong emphasis on interactive teaching and learning.

The specialist modules apply business concepts to modern horseracing. You’ll gain a critical awareness of issues in the management of racecourses and training establishments, marketing, advertising, sponsorship, bloodstock management and relevant veterinary issues.

You can also benefit from the guest speakers and practical learning opportunities including visits to racecourses, studs, training facilities and media companies. The broader skills you’ll acquire include analysis, problem solving, creativity and decision-making. The Developing as a Horseracing Executive module will also serve to strengthen and hone your interpersonal, communication and leadership abilities – all of which will prepare you for success within the industry.

Cutting edge research and theory, we believe, has most value when it can be explored in practice, which is why live case studies and simulations are central to teaching and learning. You’ll also have a range of opportunities to work on real projects for sponsoring organisations through work based projects

WhereItTakesYouGraduates from this programme can expect to access a range of senior functional and general management positions in the Horseracing industry and associated industries.

Developing as a Horseracing IndustriesExecutive(ULMS605)This module is key to the MBA Programme in its focus on the development of the whole person, particularly the crucial soft skills involved in leading and managing people in organisations. Students will need to become reflective practitioners in order to take ownership of their skill development and “future proof” their career, as horseracing industries continue to develop and react to change in market dynamics, consumer trends and technological enhancements,as well as an evolving international landscape. Through a range of diagnostics, expert feedback, masterclasses, practice and exercises, students gain self-awareness through a better understanding of themselves as individuals, team members, potential leaders, managers and learners. Students learn from industry professionals and develop their interviewing, networking and influencing skills. The module also focuses on supporting students to develop a robust, individualised personal/career development and action plan.

The Economics and Finance of the International Thoroughbred HorseracingIndustry(ULMS609)This module is designed to introduce students to the economic and financial structures which underpin the Thoroughbred Horseracing Industry domestically and globally. It introduces key issues of betting and wagering, bloodstock accounting and taxation, diversity in racing administration systems, handicapping and international classifications and the challenges of horse movement, quarantine in the context of a global environment of rapid change. Using a range of horserace industry case studies and examples, students will gain an understanding of the diverse economic and financial imperatives, challenges and issues facing all stakeholders and ways different governing bodies seek to balance these interests and related horse welfare and gambling issues.

EquineWelfareandThoroughbredRacehorseSecurity(VETS800)The module will provide the student with an overview of the Thoroughbred Racing industry, delivering an understanding of relevant equine care and welfare issues in the various areas of the industry. The areas to be covered will include management

of facilities from breeding operations, raising of young stock, training, racing, transport, sales, and careers after racing. Relevant subjects relating to the farm/horse management and veterinary care at each of these stages will be incorporated. The integrity of the sport of Thoroughbred Racing, or any racing, is directly related to equine welfare. The distinctive array of equine welfare issues will be covered as they relate to race day veterinary cover, security, public relations and animal welfare groups.

The module outlines the main theories and evidence on major issues about the location and relocation of international business activities and the implications of these location decisions for the management of strategy and the operations of public and private sector organisations. The module explores the key factors that make international business different from domestic strategies and operations. The application of the analysis of these differences to practical issues in the management of organisations is central to the module’s objectives.

Racecourse and Event Management(ULMS607)This module introduces students to the strategies, concepts and practice of racecourse and event management. The nature of the Thoroughbred Horserace Industry typically requires executives to manage a portfolio of events. The specific challenges of racecourse management will be addressed ranging from estate management, to the safety and welfare of horses at race meetings, along with issues of logistics, communication and crowd management. Specific sessions will focus on the delivery of a race meeting, security and venue safety, working with gaming industry and veterinary care on racecourses. The distinctive demands of the two major strands of thoroughbred racing will be considered.

WorkBasedProject(ULMS823)This module will provide a process which will enable students to use and extend the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme, and apply this in a live organisational setting, over the summer period.

Module summariesLeadership, Management and Organisation(ULMS847)This module starts with a focus on the individual, and on the differences between individuals that impact on their behaviour in groups and organisations.

Managing Financial Resources (ULMS701)This module provides students with an understanding of the scope of responsibilities of organisations to various stakeholders and the role of financial resources within that context. Students explore how financial resources can be managed to add value, and how major capital resource decisions are made to optimise shareholder wealth. Students gain an understanding of financial information requirements and are equipped to prepare and interpret basic financial statements in compliance with the international accounting standards IAS1 and IAS7.

Marketing, Sponsorship and Media in the Thoroughbred Horseracing Industries(ULMS606)This module introduces students to the concepts and practice of sports marketing, sponsorship and sports sponsorship as they apply to the Thoroughbred Horseracing Industries. Students are introduced to key marketing concepts such as brands, segmentation, fan-base analysis and social media. Using a range of Horseracing and Sports Industry case studies and examples, students will gain an understanding of the importance of marketing to all stakeholders and governing bodies, not only as a source of revenue, but also for keeping fans engaged with meetings and events. Particular attention will be paid to the distinct nature of the relationships between race sponsors, owners, trainers and other stakeholders. The distinctive particular challenges facing the different types of horseracing fixtures (festival v standard mid-week) will be explored. A unique (in the UK) feature of the industry is the availability of dedicated daily print media e.g. the Racing Post, and students will be expected to understand its role.

The module places particular

emphasis on helping students to understand the environment in which strategic development takes place, including the industry and country environment.

Sport, the Law, Regulation and Integrity(ULMS608)This module introduces students to the ways in which the forces of domestic, european and international law impact upon the sport, related betting and gaming industries, as well as horse welfare issues. It considers how the law is a fundamental force in driving the development of regulation across all these areas internationally, and how long-standing practices can be challenged in the courts. Topics covered include: arbitration, employment law, welfare, medication, husbandry, legal issues in breeding and racing, discrimination, competition law, free movement, intellectual property, combating ambush marketing and competition policy and related regulation especially as it affects the Gambling industry.
