ABOUT THE YOTESTh e College of Idaho comes into the game with a 9-17 overall record and a 4-11 conference mark. Th e Yotes were picked third in the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseason poll, but have struggled so far this season. C of I had lost seven of its last eight games aft er its lost at EOU last month, but the Yotes are 3-3 in their six. College of Idaho’s defense has been its strong point this season. Th e Yotes are sixth in NAIA Div. 2 in fi eld goal percentage defense (.403). C of I gives up an average of 65.6 points per outing. Th eir 207 total steals is 33rd in the nation, behind Matt Ballenger’s 2.3 steals per game, which is eighth in the country. Th e Yotes defense is giving up an average of 63.6 points per game, seventh in the country. Rod-ney Delgardo is averaging 9.62 points per outing.

THE LAST TIME OUTTh e Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team grabbed an 84-72 road win at North-west Christian University Saturday. Th e Mountaineers remain in the hunt for a home postseason game with the victory. Th e win also clinched a spot in the conference tourna-ment for EOU. Trent Roos scored 21 points to lead Eastern. Th e junior made six of his eight three-pointers. Travares Peterson added 16 points and Jamar Johnson had 12 points. Kyllian Wood grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Cody Th urmond threw eight assists. Eastern Oregon was 53 percent from the fi eld in the victory. Th e Mountaineers made 11 of their 19 three-point attempts, and 17-of-27 from the free-throw line. EOU outrebounded the Bea-cons, 36-30. Eastern threw 23 assists, compared to NCU’s 13. Th e Mountaineers committed 23 turnovers, while Northwest Christian had 16. Th e Beacons were 46 percent from the fi eld, 7-of-22 from three-point range, and 7-for-14 from the free-throw line.

FREE ADMISSION WITH CAN DONATIONTh e Eastern Oregon University Sports Information and Marketing Department have an-nounced a chance for free admission to the rest of the regular season basketball games in Quinn Coliseum. Mountaineer fans can attend the fi nal four EOU regular season double-headers by bringing at least two non-perishable food items before halft ime of the women’s games. In return for the donation, fans will receive a complimentary general admission ticket. Th e Mountaineers will be a part of the seventh annual EOU Food Drive from Jan. 31 to Feb. 28. Eastern Oregon Athletics is trying to reach its goal of 2,000 pounds of goods to donate to the Union County Food Bank.

BATTLE FOR THE I-84 CUPTh e Mountaineers and Th e College of Idaho meet for the 168th time Friday. It will be the 67th straight year the programs meet. Th e matchup is the longest running in the Cascade Conference. Th e I-84 Cup trophy is given to the winner of the basketball series with EOU and Th e College of Idaho. Th e Mountaineers currently hold possession of the trophy. C of I must sweep the men’s and women’s games Friday to take the Cup. A split or sweep by Eastern keeps the Cup in the Mountaineers possession.

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Th e Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team used a big second half to defeat Th e College of Idaho, 80-62.

Th e Mountaineers (13-5, 6-3 Cascade Collegiate Conference) won for the sixth straight time over C of I in Quinn Coliseum to hold on to the I-84 Cup. In the longest continuous rivalry for both schools, meeting 67 years in a row, the 167th meeting was a thriller in front of a loud Quinn Coliseum crowd.

Eastern had a 15-point fi rst-half lead, before College of Idaho rallied to tie the score at halft ime. Th e Yotes took the lead early in the second half, but EOU closed the game with a big rally.

Jamar Johnson led Eastern Oregon with 16 points. Th e senior was 5-of-10 from the fi eld, including 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Johnson led EOU in scoring for the fi ft h time in the past six games, and it was the Portland native’s 31st time scoring in double fi gures.

Johnson led fi ve Eastern double-digit scorers. Trent Roos added 15 points, making three of his six three-pointers. Travares Peterson scored 11 points. Jeff Rans-trom and Mason Jones each had 10 points. Ervin Felder grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Cody Th urmond threw four assists.

Th e Mountaineers jumped out to a 14-4 lead aft er a Ranstrom tip-in six minutes into the game. Four min-utes later, an Anthony Brown jumper gave EOU its

largest lead of the fi rst half, 23-8. Th e College of Idaho chipped into the lead and cut the margin to 31-29 with 3:40 remaining in the fi rst half. Rodney Delgardo closed the half with a pair of free throws to tie the score at 35.

Th e Yotes continued their run and took a fi ve-point lead two minutes into the second half aft er a free-throw from Matt Ballenger. Th e game would tie twice and have the lead changed twice over the next four minutes.

A Krispin Banks three-point play gave C of I a one-point lead, 45-44, at the 14:38 mark of the second half. Th e Mountaineers responded with an 11-0 run, that included a trio of three-pointers. A pair of Roos’ free throws with 1:45 left in regulation gave EOU its largest lead of the game, 78-58.

Ballenger led Th e College of Idaho (6-14, 1-8) with 15 points. Th e senior was 5-for-14 from the fi eld. Sydney Donaldson and Sean Spooner each added 11 points. Ballenger, Ben Van Lith, and Bryden Benke each grabbed seven rebounds. Ballenger and Delgardo each threw two assists.

Eastern outrebounded the Yotes, 49-38. Th e Mountain-eers improved to 10-2 when they outrebound their op-ponents this season. EOU was 44 percent from the fi eld, while College of Idaho was 33 percent. Eastern Oregon held C of I to 4-of-24 (16 percent) from behind the arc. Th e lowest an opponent has shot against the Mountain-eers this season. EOU was 8-of-16 from three-point range and 16-for-21 from the free-throw line. Eastern committed 19 turnovers to the Yotes’ 15.

BASKETBALL HAS WEEKLY SHOWTh e Eastern Oregon University basketball programs will have their own radio talk show on Monday’s 12-1 p.m. on KUBQ 98.7 FM. Th e whole hour is devoted to Eastern Oregon women’s and men’s basketball.

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARIESEastern Oregon is one of four teams to have made it to the past four second rounds at the NAIA Div. 2 National Tournament. Two pro-grams in those four, Oregon Tech and EOU, are from the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
